"Since Misbah will turn 43 during WI tour, don't see him playing for Pak after that" : Shahryar Khan

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shahryar Khan does not expect Test captain Misbahul Haq to continue playing for Pakistan beyond the upcoming tour of West Indies.

While talking to the Daily Express, the 82-year-old revealed that after the disappointing tour of New Zealand and Australia, he had asked the veteran skipper to decide his future himself.

“I had a word with Misbah and asked him to decide about his future,” said Shaharyar. “He said he will get back to me after reviewing his form in the PSL, following which he contacted me and expressed his desire to go on the West Indies tour.

“Keeping his services for the country in mind, I retained him as the captain because I think he wants to finish his career on a high, and the tour of Caribbean will be a great opportunity for him. However, since he will turn 43 during that tour, I don’t see him playing for Pakistan after that.”

Shaharyar, while talking about the possible return of international cricket to Pakistan, added that hosting a successful Pakistan Super League (PSL) final was a small step towards a long journey.

“It was an opportunity for us to show to the world our security arrangements,” he said. “However, it will not be fair to believe that just one match can convince international teams to come to Pakistan.

“We’ve invited Bangladesh and Sri Lankan team for the home series, but there is nothing certain yet. Even the World XI’s proposed tour of Pakistan is not confirmed yet, but if it is materialised, then we should be able to have four matches in the space of one week.”

Shahryar Khan please grow a pair and take the decision yourself instead of leaving it to a selfish "gentleman"

Another day, another Shehryar Khan statement.

:))) Indirectly he is asking Misbah ul haq to please step down I'm getting tired justifying your inclusion anymore.

love the lines use by chairman for misbah now misbah please retire after w.i series

Since Shehryar Khan is turning 99 this july, don't see him playing with Pakistan anymore.

Actually he cant as he is the longest serving test captain and a very big player to axe/sack....He is giving them time to decide and save their gentlemanship, but they tend to be poor and embarrass themselves..

By this way , he is telling MISBAH to stop or he will be axed, dropped and sacked if he wants to continue...

only in Pakistan a 'gentleman' can ask for a high finish after five consecutive defeats as a leader and his performance in the low 20s. The time to be hero has already gone. Now nobody care what you do. It has always been Misbah's personal milestones and glory not team's success and future planning. The strike rate of Misbah in 60s during his captaincy when he batted at 5 shielded by the likes of Asad,Hafeez in the middle order is the best indication of how self centered one could be.

finishing tour on high against a test team that is not even as good as Bangladesh. What a great achievement it would be. Misbah is being clever here. He knows Pakistan is going to beat this West Indies team pretty easily as we saw how good they are against spin in UAE and vs India. Misbah is using this opportunity to bag another honor which could have so easily gone to Sarfraz and new team and must have boosted their morale. But Misbah wants to bag this so he could come in media and show look 'no Pak team touring WI ever beat them including Imran Khan and I've done this'. he is such a 'gentleman'.

Well Misbah is in for a major surprise. Windies are no pushover specially in their home.

We should hope that it doesn't go from bad to worse for gentleman, there is a massive chance that it would.

what kind of chairman is this?

So Misbah can play if he is 42 but cannot play if he is 43. Is Pakistan trying to break the world record or something?

not sure about world record but it is surely setting up a trend for next Pakistani generation to come. You can play till you are 43 as long as you are fit.

Misbah must play on as long as he plays well and stays fit... He is doing both as of now.

Shahreyar Khan needs to be told that there are thoughts you keep in your mind and thoughts you share with the media. Big difference between the two!

He is too old to care. We need a age limit for chairmens.

look at his average in the last five tests.

Can't judge anyone on basis of five bad tests. It could bad patch. Thing is, he is fittest player in Pakistan. And he will get back to his best soon

Forget Misbah. Did anyone see this:

Dude, leave yourself first. You should be in your retirement, rather than draining us and coming out with needless statements after needless statements. Keep it to the dressing room. Oh wait, then no one would know who you are. You would just be a nice quiet man in the background doing his job. We can't have that. We still need to sell the brand that is Sheharyar Khan!

(I was a big fan of his first time he was Chairman...but clearly with age, he is just losing it)

We beat WI 2-1 in our own conditions. Imo WI are favorites for this series. I'm hoping for a drawn series 1-1, but even that may be far-fetched.

Man why so hulla bulla.... MAN HIMSELF TOLD DAT HE WILL PLAY TILL 50.... IT waz our mistake dat we took it as a JOKE which it never was........

Question is why cant you have Misbah? Whats the hate with him? He will do well for sure.... If you have better players then bring them on.

how do you bring new players when senior passed their sell by date cling on to the team like a parasite and don't even rest against average opponents. You clearly have not followed Pakistan cricket quite well.

yeah but it is amazing the form is only lost whenever legend steps outside UAE.

You have many tests upcoming in UAE and in WI. Misbah should be back among runs soon.

You can't bring players than expect them to perform right off the bat. In order for them to develop into a fine player you need to give them a long run in international cricket. Which is the same time Misbah is wasting for any young player who could be our best player in the future.

So the real question is, is it worth keeping a 43 year old who will run out of gas any time soon? Or should we focus on a new player who will peak when we need him most.

This pattern is similar to how he got rid of Azhar

Step 1 : acknowledge players weakness but give them "full" support (Azhar before England)
Step 2: hint that coach wants to move on, but decision is with player (Azhar after England )
Step 3: Publically inform the world that the player is on his last legs (Azhar before Australia)
Step 4 : Player gets the message and goes, with Shrayar being able to say he "didn't make them leave"

what will be funny though is when they will attempt to try this method on younis :yk2

Told ya guys.

King will give us our first EVER win in the Caribbean. Our cricket history lacks this.

Then he'll retire like a boss, leaving his haters burning with even more fire. :srini

We need it.
:najam

I think the board should axe the players instead of letting them make the decision. The board needs to have a vision for the future and prevent players from staying for too long. The players themselves need to move on with life after a certain age.

Our board are gutless, they don't want to make decisions that will turn them into media villains, especially post YK "I'll shoot my self/retire from tests".

If it wasn't for mickey I reckon Afridi would have gotten a fair well game as well

Misbah Birthday = 28th May
Last Test finishes in WI on 14th May

Therefore.....

I dont think I have seen a timid Pcb as this one.

Fine by me. Would have liked this to be over now. If Misbah feels that the hapless windies will allow him to make runs, he is mistaken. He is too old and too slow.

If he survives Shannon Gabriel then misbah may able to scratch an innings together, but I agree it's pointless overall

Good spot Miggy, I guess Misbah will just have to play another 6 years until the next Windies tour.

Yeah it's impossible to beat west indies but shameless Misbah will make sure we win it by scoring few ducks and inspiring the team by his legendry captiancy. Honestly some fans are so deluded and some have made it a life long mission to defend Mr gentlemen in everything.

Can't trust SK. He can change his tone with time. If Misbah don't want to retire then SK has no choice but let him continue.

I agree with you, but would word it differently.

Misbah is a big name to drop.

But he is a very small figure indeed as a batsman. A diminished, discredited batsman.

To be honest, I think that Inzamam and Shaharyar Khan have missed a big opportunity here.

Pakistan's number 1 problem in international cricket is a failure to effect generational change, retaining TTFs and has-beens forever.

Picking Mohammad Hafeez instead of Sami Aslam in 2015 and 2016.

Younis Khan in ODI's.

Sohail Khan with his catastrophic Test record.

Zulfiqar Babar with his Test bowling average of 39 instead of Zafar Gohar or Mohammad Asghar or even Mohammad Nawaz.

This was the opportunity for Shaharyar Khan and Inzamam-ul-Haq to stamp their authority upon the process by ending the career of Misbah-ul-Haq, just like Australia did with Ian Healy and Mark Waugh.

they beat pak in UAE, dont forget that.. it is not a pushover anymore.. For Pak if MYK and Azhar doesnt score much then it is very hard to beat them in WI
