What's new

South Africa (149/6) defeat India (148/6) by 4 wickets; lead series 0-2

Magnificent throw from H Pandya there..what an all rounder, reminds me of Stokes.

It's a pity that Indian fans want non performers or overhyped players in the team but will never acknowledge guys like Bhuvi or Iyer. :inti

It's unfortunate that Bhuvaneshwar dies not have that extra bit of pace for flat tracks. His accuracy is terrific but that 133-135 pace wont do it on flat pitches.

Always good to see IPL stars getting hammered. No wonder only guy from India who performed today is a proven international cricketer.

The pitch looked completely different when low quality batters were playing in 1st innings

Pant has started to look like a 'dholak'. Somebody should remind him that he is a cricketer. :inti

I am still scratching my head that how players like Pant and Pandeya so overhyped in limited overs cricket with no performance at all. Pandeya is such a free loader here, kick him out and pant too.

Heinrich Klaasen's magnificent knock of 81 off 46 powered South Africa to a four-wicket win over India in the second T20I as the visitors took a 2-0 lead in the 5-match series.

Chasing 149, South Africa lost three early wickets thanks to Bhuvneshwar Kumar's brilliant opening spell. However, Klaasen and Temba Bavuma (35) steadied South Africa.

When Bavuma fell to Yuzvendra Chahal, Klaasen upped the ante and went on to register his highest score in T20Is. Klaasen smashed 7 boundaries and five sixes as he took a special liking to the Indian spinners.

Earlier, some brilliant bowling helped the Proteas restrict India to 148/6. Shreyas Iyer top-scored for India with 40, while Ishan Kishan scored a 21-ball 34.

India were set for an even lower score, but Dinesh Karthik's flourish at the death saw them add some respectability to the scorecard. The veteran batter finished unbeaten on 30 off 21.

Just goes to show what level of competition these guys play for 3 months. :facepalm :inti

Well according to some experts here Pant should open the batting and Pandya deserves a place in this side as a batsman alone. :inti

Do you think the way Pandya is bowling these days he will throw himself out of this team pretty soon? :inti

IPL hangover perhaps?

Seems the Indian players are struggling.

Pant would have opened the batting if Rahul and Sharma and now Kishan were not there. How can he replace such players?? again scratching my head. Get SKY in and

Kishan, Iyer, Gaikwad, Pant have struggled mightily in IPL too. I was surprised to see them in the squad to begin with.

Only Pandya and DK were in form players in the squad.

Pant, Chahal, Ruturaj, and Pandya are overhyped basis IPL which is nothing in front of international cricket.

Those who deny this are proved wrong yet again.

Let's just scrap international cricket and play IPL the whole year round

Klaasen's fireworks trumps Bhuvneshwar's masterclass as South Africa go 2-0 up

Chasing 149 for the win, Heinrich Klassen took the game away from India with a 46-ball 81 as South Africa romped home with four wickets to spare to go 2-0 up in Cuttack.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's magical figures of 4/13 in four overs was not enough to stop South Africa from taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Led by Heinrich Klaasen's fiery fifty, the Proteas chased down the total with 10 balls to spare.

Earlier, South Africa bowlers bowled brilliantly to restrict India to 148/6, with only Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Dinesh Karthik making sizable contributions for the hosts.

South Africa win the toss

For the second game in a row, Temba Bavuma called it right at the toss and elected to field first. Despite the loss in the first game, India remained unchanged. South Africa, though, made two changes – Quinton de Kock (hand injury) and Tristan Stubbs made way for Reeza Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasen.

Kishan goes big after early wicket

India lost Ruturaj Gaikwad in the very first over of the innings, who was late on the drive and ended up slicing the ball to the backward point. The first three overs only fetched 12 runs before Ishan Kishan welcomed Anrich Nortje into the attack with two sixes in his over.

He smashed a four and a six in the last two overs of the Powerplay to take India's score to 42/1. He scored yet another boundary off Nortje but the pacer had the last laugh with the short ball sending the southpaw back.

South Africa dominate middle-overs

Shreyas Iyer, who was quiet after walking in at No.3, smashed Tabraiz Shamsi for a six and a four off consecutive balls. India, though, kept losing wickets at regular intervals and failed to gather steam in the middle overs.

Rishabh Pant holed out in the deep trying to attack Keshav Maharaj off the very first ball of his spell. Hardik Pandya couldn't replicate his heroics from the first game, as he was castled by Wayne Parnell coming around the wicket at an angle. Iyer fell in the very next over for a 35-ball 40, reducing India to 99/5 at the end of 14 overs.

Dinesh Karthik puts on a show

Dinesh Karthik played his first T20I in three years last game but didn't get much time in the middle. Today, Karthik had over six overs to make a mark and he did not disappoint the packed crowd in Cuttack.

He had to bide his time with wickets falling and was 8 from 14 balls going into the last two overs. In the final two, he smashed two sixes and two fours to finish on 30* off 21, propelling India to a fighting total of 148/6.

Bhuvi shines in the Powerplay

Defending just 149, India needed wickets early on and their veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar delivered. He went through Hendricks' gate in the very first over. The decision to send Dwaine Pretorius did not reap the same reward as the first game, as he was deceived by the knuckleball.

In the last over of the Powerplay, Bhuvneshwar picked his third wicket in as many overs with the nip-backer to dismiss the dangerous Rassie van der Dussen. India kept the lid on scoring even after the fielding restrictions were lifted, reducing the Proteas to just 36/3 after the Powerplay.

Klaasen leads South Africa's fightback

The required run-rate was touching 10 an over when Heinrich Klaasen decided to take the attack to India. The carnage began when he plundered Yuzvendra Chahal for a four and six. He dished out similar treatment to Hardik, with two fours in his second over.

He smashed Axar Patel out of the attack in his very first over, accumulating 19 runs which included a six and two fours. The wicket of Temba Bavuma for 35 did nothing to slow South Africa down as Klaasen's fireworks had brought the required rate down.

Klaasen got to his fifty off just 32 balls and finished the game off in a hurry thereafter. With 34 needed off 30, the decision to bowl Chahal backfired on India as David Miller and Klaasen smoked the wrists-spinner for three sixes.

By the time the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed by Harshal Patel for 81, South Africa only needed five from the last three overs. Bhuvi got one more wicket to complete his four-for before Miller hit the winning runs to take the visitors home with ten balls and four wickets to spare.

A couple of days after failing to defend a big total of 211 against South Africa in the first T20I, the Indian bowlers could not come up with anything special in the second T20I in Cuttack on Sunday. They failed to defend a total of 148 as India slumped to their second straight loss to trail 0-2 in the five-match series. Apart from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who returned with figures 4-0-13-4, other Indian bowlers could not take regular wickets. Senior players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel were costly too.

The Indian bowling performance did not impress former India captain Sunil Gavaskar at all.

“The major problem is the fact that they don't have wicket-taking bowlers in this squad apart from Bhuvneshwar Kumar. So, you take wickets and then you get the opposition under pressure. So, in both the matches, did anybody look like getting a wicket apart from Bhuvneshwar Kumar? He was getting the ball to move. That is the issue which is the reason why a total of 211 was something that they could not defend,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports after the match.

In the match, Comeback man Heinrich Klaasen followed Rassie Van der Dussen's suit in turning out to be an unlikely hero with a career-best 81 as South Africa once again outwitted India by four wickets on Sunday.

On a two-paced track where most of the batters struggled, Klaasen made it look ridiculously easy as he smashed seven fours and five towering sixes in his 46-ball knock to hep his team knock off a target of 149 with 10 balls to spare.

The wicketkeeper-batter, who was included into the side as a forced change for injured Quinton de Kock, completed his fourth T20I fifty in 32 balls before he smashed three sixes off Yuzvendra Chahal to virtually seal the chase.

Looking to finish it off with a six, he fell victim to Harshal Patel and in the very next over, Bhuvneshwar Kumar dismissed Wayne Parnell to finish with a superb 4-0-13-4.

But it was not enough as they just needed three runs from the last two overs and the in-form David Miller (20 not out) completed the win to give the Proteas a commanding 2-0 lead going into the Vizag T20I on June 14.

The visitors seek their first ever bilateral T20 series win in India.

Making a comeback after more than seven months, Klaasen never took his foot off the pedal and got his team out of the woods after Bhuvneshwar pegged them back to 29/3 inside the powerplay overs.

Klaasen first shared a match-turning 64 run partnership from 41 balls with skipper Temba Bavuma (35) before in-form David Miller joined him in the middle.
