A win would keep Sri Lanka alive as competition tightens for the three remaining semi-final spots, but for that they have to get past a South African side with nothing to lose

Overview

Sri Lanka v South Africa
The Riverside Durham, Chester-le-Street
2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Match 35
Friday, 28 June; 10.30am GMT, 09.30am local

As did Pakistan’s win over New Zealand on Wednesday, 26 June, a win for Sri Lanka over South Africa would really open up the competition and tighten the race to the semi-finals. Sri Lanka are currently seventh, but two points would take them straight up to fifth, just below England, who are themselves in a fight to make the last four now. Of course, any gain on the points table is only momentary as teams continue to scrap hard and displace each other, but it is precisely for that reason that every point from here on out matters.

South Africa have had their worst campaign ever at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup. This is only the second time since their debut in the competition, in 1992, that they have failed to go past the first round. But there is nothing more dangerous in a multi-team tournament than a team with nothing to lose, and South Africa will be eager to prove just that by picking up wins in their last two matches and upset the teams that still stand a chance.

Key players

Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka): The veteran pacer has shown that he still has the ability to turn matches on their head and is a proven performer under pressure. Malinga has had a crucial role to play in both of Sri Lanka’s wins so far in the competition, snaring seven wickets across those two games, and figures to be a prominent part of Sri Lanka’s campaign going forward.

Chris Morris (South Africa): Morris only made the squad after an injury took down Anrich Nortje, but he is showing why he deserves his spot. Morris has been one of the few South African bowlers to have shown a measure of incision in this tournament, and has undoubtedly been their best bowler after Imran Tahir.

Conditions

A bright day is expected at Chester-le-Street. Rain should be a non-entity, so we should get a full game in. This is Durham’s CWC19 debut, but as a guide, the last match on this ground, between England and Australia a year ago, produced a high-scoring derby, with England running down a 311-run target inside 45 overs.

Squads

Sri Lanka: Dimuth Karunaratne (c), Avishka Fernando, Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kusal Perera (wk), Thisara Perera, Nuwan Pradeep, Dhananjaya de Silva, Milinda Siriwardana, Lahiru Thirimanne, Isuru Udana, Jeffrey Vandersay

South Africa: Faf du Plessis (c), Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock (wk), Hashim Amla, Rassie van der Dussen, David Miller, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, JP Duminy, Dwaine Pretorius, Beuran Hendricks, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Imran Tahir, Tabraiz Shamsi

Sri Lanka v South Africa

• South Africa have won 16 of their last 18 men’s ODIs against Sri Lanka, including their
last five on the bounce; the two losses to Sri Lanka in this run came in back-to-back
games in August 2018.
• This will be the sixth ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup meeting between Sri Lanka and
South Africa; the Proteas are undefeated in their last four meetings at the
tournament (W3, T1), after losing their first clash at the 1992 edition.
• South Africa have won both of their previous ODIs against Sri Lanka in men’s ICC
tournaments in England, winning by 96 runs at The Oval in the 2017 Champions
Trophy and by 89 runs in Northampton at the 1999 Cricket World Cup.
• Sri Lanka have won both of their two previous men’s ODIs at The Riverside in Durham,
both times against England by margins of eight wickets in 2006 and 157 runs in 2014.
• South Africa have never played a men’s ODI at The Riverside in Durham before, in
fact they have only played one men’s international in any format at this venue, a
T20I against England in 2012 which they won by seven wickets.
• South Africa have just one win to their name thus far in the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket
World Cup; they have never previously won fewer than three games at an ICC Men’s
Cricket World Cup and will need to win their remaining two to reach that mark.
• Lasith Malinga’s next maiden over will be his 100th in this format; he would become
just the fourth player to bowl a century of maiden overs for Sri Lanka in men’s ODIs
(Chaminda Vaas – 278, Muttiah Muralitharan – 195, Nuwan Kulasekara – 106).
• South Africa’s Rassie van der Dussen has the best batting average in men’s ODIs of
anyone to notch up 10+ innings, his rate currently at 71.1 (569 runs, 13 innings).
• Nuwan Pradeep (Sri Lanka) requires three more wickets to reach 50 in ODIs, he
recorded figures of 2/54 in his only previous ODI v South Africa (2017 ICC Champions
Trophy).
• Only Jacques Kallis (1,434) has scored more runs in men’s ODIs for South Africa
against Sri Lanka than Quinton de Kock (1,104), Faf du Plessis (1,070) or Hashim Amla
(1,063); no other player has managed to break 1,000 runs.

Who would have thought at the beginning of the tournament, South Africa will have such a poor tournament. I thought they would reach the semis.

SA opting to bowl. If SL get to a decent total they will make life tough for SA ( and for Pak, Eng and BD)

I am looking forward to watch Avishka fernando play. The way he carted Archer over the boundary was delicious. I don't understand the Point of Selection Jeevan mediocre mendis they have a specialist leg spinner in their squad play him. This bits and piece players hardly offer anything and He has done nothing with either bat or ball

Lets hope Sri lanka loses this match, as i do not have much hope from West Indies and by the time sri lanka will meet India, it will be a complete dead rubber for India so they will bench many players.

South Africa won the toss and opt to bowl

if my memory serves me well, Pakistan played here at chester le street against scotland in 99 world cup. and we were in trouble until muhammad yousaf bailed us out. I think shoaib akhtar destroyed their top order.

Not sure about choosing to bowl first, weather is good, get the runs on the board and put the opposition under pressure.

Faf doesnt seem to learn they have failed to chase 4 times this WC and still continues to bowl first

Hopefully Sri Lanka lose this so they have no chance of going to semis

Nice. Even SL has decided to join the party. Its going to be more exciting than the fans thought.

it seems like they are losing on purpose, even Zim and Ireland would have put a better fight,

This is the reason why I questioned SA’s decision to bowl first. SL off to a good start.

srilanka needs a big victory here to improve their nrr in case they are tied with england at 12 points.

the first tie breaker is number of wins, so even if they win all 3 games nd england win remaining 2 games england will go through as they will have 6 wins as compared to SLs 5 wins (and 2 Washouts)

if SL win vs SA and WI, Ind are surely goung to throw the match vs SL if it means Pk is out and they face SL in semis

Fernando gives it away big time. Bring Tahir on after power play and squeeze.

sl by far is the most rubbish side in this wc after Afghans
i hope they don't make semis

We may need double favor from India at this rate, They will have to beat both Poms and SL for us, and we can't edge out NZ due to our terrible run out, But the way we played 1st 5 games we can't complain much, Bohat dair ke mehrban aatay aatay, India surely not doing both these favors to us.

yah thats right.

3 down, Sri Lankans again donating wkts as Pollock said before the match.

Sri Lankan batsmen have to show better discipline and consistency for all the stroke making talent they possess. Why can't someone like Sangakkara just spend a day or two with this team and help them understand these simple things?

Just lose Srilanka. Please just lose. Hope the saffers could chase a score for once.

111/5
CHRIS Morris good catch
dangerous Mendis is goneeeer.

I think today Amla and Markram will play well. this pitch will suit their nature.

What is this jeevan mendis doing in the team ?He neither is a bowler nor batsman. Also an awful feilder.

Jeevan mendis 2 from 23. Nice test match innings so far.

Sri Lanka have been awful so far.

It's going to take a miracle from their bowlers if they are to pull this one out of the bag.

Safe to say SL will no longer be a threat to our qualification after this match.

This far from a classic South African team but don't think they are as bad as they have shown in this WC. Most of their batting line up got out of form at the worst time. Bowlers who haven't been fit. Yet despite this they could have easily won close against Bangladesh,NZ, and India. Who knows what could have happened against West Indies?

Be intrigued to see what changes South Africa make after this WC .

What’s Jamodis?

JAMODI = Just another meaningless ODI

I think English fans came up with it because of majority of history their team was minnow level in ODIs and English cricket was just about the Ashes because that is the only thing they could realistically have a chance of winning.

Interesting as they are on the verge of getting knocked out early.
