What's new

South Africa (210 & 212/3) defeat India (223 & 198) by 7 wickets to win 3rd Test - Win series 2-1

41 to win. Seven wickets in hand. Come on you Saffers.

Last 2 tests sirinath prasad even Amir & Asif with there paid no balls could have defended 220 on these pitches !

South Africa have won the big moments with their inexperienced batting which will bode well for them. India have been ordinary in crunch situations, all in all a fair result in favour of the proteas.

Umesh Yadav looks to be a poor selection. Don't think Ishant Sharma would have done any worse. Some ex Indian players have stated that he should have been picked for his experience

Indian bowlers trying too hard. If they bowl normal, they can be fine like in 1st test, 1st innings of 2nd & this test. The blame completely goes to batsmen. Indian batting manages on easier pitches where even late order and bowlers/tail come to rescue. But these are tougher pitches and also definitely tougher bowlers (compared to England and Australia). Also India probably missed Rohit Sharma and Jadeja (the batsman). The matches would have at least been lot closer like previous South African tour (what worries me is that in 2018 tour the matches were lot closer. Instead of improving we got worse!)

Even in Australia and England tour we got rescued by batting from lower order & tailenders (Shami too helping in one of the matches!) But these tough pitches and tough bowlers thoroughly exposed our biggest weak-link (middle-order) which couldn't be covered by anything. We will face the same fate in NZ if we carry the same issue (and also England & Australia will also prepare against this next time).

Giving Shreyas Iyer the confidence (by retaining him in the side after good show at home - where Pujara & Rahane failed even at home) to bat in this tour! I don't know what harm it would have done! At least by replacing one of Pujara/Rahane! This is how we should build our team and make replacements at right time! I hope these idiots will wake up at least after this! These duds Pujara and Rahane are struggling at home also, then what confidence it gave to still retain them baffles me!

I think India will be a far better side the day they get rid of puja and rahane. Got to feel for them they are the good guys in this team but they are well past their prime. A bit like azhar ali

This was a perfect chance for India to win against the weakest South African team at home. :inti

They certainly dropped the ball. I can't help but feel Kohli's presence has something to do with it. His reactions, and emotional outburst are not befitting of an ATG, honestly.

IND 223 & 198

RSA 210 & 212/3

South Africa won by 7 wkts

Brilliant by the Saffers, great to see them competitive again.

Oh dear.
ATG Indian Team just lost to an inexperienced South African side.
They also shamed themselves on the pitch by their absurd antics.

Not been great of late has it? first 159-0 and now this.

Never mind, at least they beat the Aussies in Australia and they'll continue t make millions by milking the Indian public.

Congratulations to South Africa because no one would have backed them after they lost the first test. Stunning

Keegan peterson is man of the series. his batting in tough conditions made the difference.

SA still have janneman malan to debut , SA can be a quality batting line up that can compete in Australia.

This has been a spectacular series.

SA were inexperienced and depleted but full credit to them for winning it. Wow.

Off topic but India have produced 3 brilliant test series in last 12 months. In Aus, Eng and now in SA.

Test cricket is wonderful.

Congrats SA on winning and beating India.

reality check for indian team and its fans.

Virat Kohli | India captain:

I think it's a great spectacle of Test cricket for all to see. We played well in the first game to win but South Africa bounced back well in the second and carried on the momentum in the third as well. There was some lapse of concentration from us as well in key moments. I thought South Africa performed better in those key moments and totally deserved the win. One of the challenges that we have faced touring abroad is to capitalise on momentum when it is on our side. Whenever we have done that, we've won games. But on other hand, when we haven't done so, we have lost matches due to 30-45 minutes of cricket where we have batted badly. The opposition bowlers bowled well this series but generally, we haven't been consistent. We have had too many batting collapses. Of course, it (batting) has been the reason, no doubt about us. Their bowlers were just better in terms of their execution and applying pressure. Batting is certainly something to be looked at. No excuses there. It's really disappointing for sure. We did well in Australia and England but that doesn't guarantee us success in South Africa. The reality is that we haven't won here in South Africa and we have to deal with it. KL's batting as an opener. Mayank getting stuck in and then Rishabh's innings this game, these are some positives that we can take home. Also obviously, our win at Centurion was special.

Now he is going to act like a great statesman and pretend that his antics in front of the entire world a day before didn't happen? The BCCI needs to take action against him before the ICC does ie a hefty fine and a ban for a few games and if they don't then the fans have to apply ruthless pressure on both to do so on all forums

Dean Elgar | South Africa captain:

Pretty elated. Obviously will sink in a day or two, maybe this evening. Really proud. We were thrown under the sword quite a few times this series and the guys responded brilliantly. Obviously, to bounce back after losing the first game, to believe that we could still win. Extremely happy. (On how things turned around) Challenging your players, you need characters within the group and the bowling unit has been excellent all series. I had put up a challenge after the first game and the guys responded brilliantly. Helps to have a group that doesn't have any real big names, they like to rally together and play as one. And that's crucial. Extremely proud of this group of players that we have here. Ultimately, if you want to operate at our performance levels, you need tough chats and I'm a bit of old-school mentality with a new-school twist. I laid a few challenges, even to some of the senior players as well. It was great to see the guys take my message on board. It's great to see the guys buying in to you from a captain's point of view. I think us as a closed group, has helped us to feed off each other. We've played as a unit and we've grown massively as a group in the last two Tests. If you want to compete in Test cricket and be no.1 someday, you have to beat the best in the world. I'm really happy that things went well for us. Could easily have gone wrong and I'd have had egg on my face. As I said earlier, really proud of this group. We're by no means a finished article, I can tell you that. I'm already thinking of the next series. There are some negatives also that we need to work on. I think the way he (Petersen) responded since the first game has been immense. Always known as a good player, he's gotten into a great player mould now and it's a lot to say for a playe who has hardly played a handful of games. He has dominated domestic cricket for a while now and it's great to see him do so well in the last two Tests. He's willing to learn and you need characters like that.

Time to rebuild this team. Old guys like Shami and pretenders like Rahane need to thrown out. We need replacements for quite a few players. This team has done as well as it can with its limitations. 2021 was a terrific year.

Time to look towards the future

Also a slap in the face of the QDK supporters and those always moaning about the quota system. Saffers still fighting and playing good cricket. KP looks a good prospect.

Now is the perfect time to introduce some new players and take some risks. Otherwise you may endnup with long in the tooth players who keep juniors out. Similar to what happened to us in the early 2000's.

Hmmmm

I thought this was the suposed to be the greatest test team of all time and the greatest bowling attack of all time?? lol

What a load of absolute, overhyped, pipe-dreaming, egotistic, delusional wannabes!

1. Lost comfortably to Kiwis in the test final

2. Very easily beaten by an average Proteas side in 2 tests and lost the series easily

3. COULD ONLY TAKE 5 WICKETS IN 2 FOURTH INNINGS IN TOTAL!!! NOT THE STUFF OF GREATS!!!

So let's all calm down hey. India are a GOOD test side. Better then Pakistan. BUT NOT BY MUCH. Please don't insult great teams and great bowling attacks by comparing these clowns to them.

Rant over!

That is also a good point. Shami might have bowled well in 1st match and in patches, but he did not retain the same intensity throughout. A younger guy would have shown more hunger. For instance Thakur (with his limitation & role in the team) did punch above his weight. So we have to keep looking newer prospects like Siraj, etc.

South Africa took the big moments really well and full credit to them.

India with their experience chocked in big moments, both with bat and ball.

Amazing comeback, we are so pathetic I thought we were done for. Very risky to go with 4 specialist batsmen who are average/mediocre themselves. Should have dropped Maharaj/Olivier to accommodate an extra bat. We got away with murder here. Congrats nonetheless

The non-chalance with with South Africa won the series was surprising. Don't get me wrong. I always predicted they would win the series even as posters couldn't stop talking about how India were favorites and how they were going to win their first series in South Africa. But honestly I didn't expect both run chases to be such cakewalks.

At any rate, good on Elgar and South Africa. And they might have found someone of real substance in Keegan Petersen.

KP looks a decent bat for these conditions. Now we need to move Markram to #4 and bring Malan into the side. Bavuma will fight it out with RvD as neither are long-term solutions anyhow, Zubayr Hamza should replace both

Keegan Petersen shines again as South Africa clinch series in Cape Town

South Africa cruised to a commanding seven-wicket victory on the fourth day of the third Test match against India in Cape Town, sealing a 2-1 series win.

SCORECARD

There was a lot at stake for both India and South Africa heading into the penultimate day of the match. The hosts needed only 111 runs to complete a terrific comeback after being 0-1 down in the series, and the visitors were eyeing eight wickets for their first-ever series win in the country.

But as things turned out, the Proteas emerged victorious in a tricky run chase despite a solid effort from the Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammad Shami started off well in the morning, posing some serious questions to the South African batters.

They beat the outside edge on multiple occasions but the wicket eluded them. When the edge finally happened, it was Keegan Petersen nicking one to the slip cordon but the catch was spilled by Cheteshwar Pujara. Rassie van der Dussen had his nervous moments too, as he survived two close DRS calls.

But once the nerves settled down, the hosts started cruising towards the total. Petersen had already completed his fifty and started playing some delightful shots. Van der Dussen also started looking more confident with every delivery he faced.

A defeat looked inevitable for India when South Africa had reached a score of 155/2, requiring only 67 runs to win. But Shardul Thakur raised India's hopes again when he dismissed Keegan Petersen for 82 after being brought into the attack. The 28-year-old made the most out of that dropped catch by Pujara and was eyeing his maiden Test century, but he chopped a length delivery back onto the stumps.

Temba Bavuma joined van der Dussen in the middle after Petersen's dismissal and the duo carried South Africa safely through to lunch, adding 16 more runs to the total to take their score to 171/2.

With only 41 runs required to win post-lunch, the job didn't look as daunting for the hosts as it looked for India. Virat Kohli chose to go with Ravichandran Ashwin and Shardul Thakur in the second session, aiming for quick wickets, but it didn't quite materialise.

Van der Dussen and Bavuma scored the remaining runs in 8.3 overs, staying unbeaten on 41 and 32 respectively, thus taking South Africa to a memorable series win against a strong Indian side. Keegan Petersen was named the Player of the Match for his superb knocks of 72 and 82 in both innings. He was also named the Player of the Series, as he finished as South Africa's highest run-getter over the course of the three matches.

Now is the perfect time to introduce some new players and take some risks. Otherwise you may endnup with long in the tooth players who keep juniors out. Similar to what happened to us in the early 2000's.

Yes absolutely. It's an even bigger issue in our LOI setup where we insisted on playing oldies with 'experience' as recently as the 2019 world cup.

This team desperately needs young talents. Whether our next gen can step it up or not is left to be seen.

I didnt get to see the scorecard until lunch and i full expected Ind to be close to victory but Ind have just folded. The aura of Ind batting has gone and the bowlers didnt do it for 2 games running when defending defendable totals. This is real surprise, well done SA

Thank you mate! I know PP is an hostile environment for Indians (just like how bulk of Indians would treat Pakistanis) but I am happy that there are handful of Pakistanis appreciate this Indian team for their strength and understand the actual underlying problems due to which they falter at times!

SA well on their way, now into the double digits, this loss is not on any umpiring or controversies.. This series loss is purely on the Indian top order batting.....

They lost the plot Kohli and his players and that's were they lost the game.

What about Bumrah?

I thought India lost this after the antics on the field by Kohli and his players they were leaking runs and South Africa pounced on this.

South Africa head coach Mark Boucher on Friday ranked the remarkable, come-from-behind 2-1 series win against World No. 1 India as one of the best in their history of Test cricket. Trailing 0-1 after losing the Boxing Day opening Test at Centurion, the Dean Elgar-led side showed immense resilience to win back-to-back matches at the Wanderers and Newlands to upset the firm favourites.

"To put it into perspective we have lost three tosses. A lot of people, including some of the media, had written us off after day one of the first Test of the series," Boucher said at the post-match media interaction.

"So, to come back after losing the first Test badly and then to win the second Test and now win the third Test is pretty incredible.

"It will rank up there -- in top five must be. Where we've come from, the on-field and off-field stuff... It's good to get some good results.

"The way the whole Test series was played was hard fought, some good cricket, it must be up there with some of the best Test series to have played in South Africa."

'Will take a lot of confidence from this triumph'

Going into the series, the hosts were short on experience as they played their first Test in six months at Centurion. They played just six Tests under new captain Elgar as Australia opted not to travel for a four-match series last March.

Elgar started his journey with a 2-0 win over the West Indies before losing to India in the Boxing Day Test.

"It's certainly something that we can take a lot of confidence from. This team is on a mission, really. We've been through some tough times of late and they have driven in a way that is pretty special.

"I'm incredibly proud of where they come from in a short period of time and the results are starting to come through now which is fantastic.

"Our feet are firmly on the ground. We know that we're not the finished product. We've got goals ahead of us. So we will enjoy this win," Boucher said.

Going into the fourth day's play, South Africa started from 101 for two and finished the task with as many as seven wickets in hand.

"These guys deserve it. They've been through a lot together as a unit. So it's just nice to see that.

"It's a close knit group of guys. The World Cup was a massive disappointment, although we played some good cricket throughout.

"It is just something that was really needed in our dressing room to put the hard work in."

'Not surprised with the character shown'

In both the Tests, the inexperienced side under Elgar were set tricky targets of over 200 in bouncy conditions.

Elgar showed the way in Johannesburg, helping the side chase down 240 in a seven-wicket win.

Here, Keegan Petersen top-scored with 82 -- his third successive Test fifty -- as the hosts chased down the 212-run target.

"It doesn't surprise me because you got Dean as well who's that sort of character who leads from the front.

"You've got Temba (Bavuma) as the vice-captain who is the same fighter with that spirit in him, so you've got two leaders like that who the guys are going to follow.

"The guys stood up with regards to their own games as well." Boucher added, "To put these things into perspective about where this team is and where the Indian team is... They are probably the best team in world cricket Test-wise at the moment.

"They've gone over to England, beat England, beat Australia in Australia. So this is something that our boys won't take for granted."

Loss for words for Keegan

For South Africa, Petersen and 21-year-old lanky left-arm pacer Marco Jansen were the finds of the series.

Heaping praise on the duo, Boucher said: "You get two youngsters who have just come into the side. Both of them deserve their little spotlights." Petersen, who was playing only his second series after a lacklustre debut against the West Indies in June, impressed with his solidity and composure at No. 3.

The 28-year-old scored three fifties in four innings and each time bettered his score to be adjudged Man of the Series. He was also the Man of the Match in their series-clinching win here.

"Keegan probably didn't start off as well in the West Indies as he would have liked. Then he didn't start off too well at the Supersport Park.

"But he's always shown signs of the player that we are seeing right now. He just stuck to his guns. He's in a good position to have a guy like Dean next to him. He (Dean) really backs him.

"He's a tough nut and batting at No. 3 in Test cricket, you have got to be tough, you got to know your game, technically you got to be sound as well. Hopefully he just gets better, better and better.

"It's a very tough position to play in South Africa in our conditions, batting at No. 3. The way that he's come through the series, I'm at a loss for words. In a big series, against big players and to get the Man of the Series, he fully deserved it," Boucher said of Petersen.

'Found a superstar in Jansen'

Uncapped left-arm seamer Jansen was a revelation and grew from strength to strength after an unimpressive debut in the Boxing Day Test.

"When you lose out a guy like Andre Nortje (hip injury), it was a big loss for us but then you get Marco coming to the side. We are really in a good space at the moment." "A lot of people questioned his selection in the first Test. He didn't start off too well and the media jumped on him a bit, which I thought was quite unfair," he said of Jansen.

"But we saw what he had in Pakistan. He was with us in the West Indies, and it was just a matter of time before he came through because we can see the skillset that he's got and the variation." Averaging a superb 16.47, Jansen finished with 19 wickets, behind their top wicket taker Kagiso Rabada (20).

"Now when we look at him and probably everyone's looking the same, what a find we've got, another addition to our bowling attack. He has a lot of cricket to learn. We find a superstar in him as well. He's only going to get better," he said.

'We've turned the corner quite a while ago'
The head coach further went on to say that they have turned the corner after some forgettable performances in the recent past including a group-stage exit in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

"I believe that we've turned the corner quite a while ago. Our results have been pretty solid over the last six months to a year.

So the greatest side couldn’t beat the worst SA team. 2 back to back games where they couldn’t defend a total which should have easily been defended.

One-sided day.

I thought India might have shown a bit more fight today, but the events of yesterday seemed to distract them.

Credit to the South Africa batters, they never let India get on top in that 4th innings and batted very well.

Team India conceded a heavy defeat in the third and final Test of the series against South Africa, as the side faced a 1-2 loss in Cape Town. India's wait to conquer the ‘final frontier’, thus, continues as the side failed to capitalise on the first Test victory in Centurion, facing seven-wicket defeats in Wanderers and Newlands.

Virat Kohli's men were widely touted as favourites to win the series due to a relatively inexperienced South African side, and India were given a further boost with the absence of fast bowler Anrich Nortje. After the first Test, South Africa also lost Quinton de Kock in the squad as the wicketkeeper-batter announced his retirement from the longest format of the game. Despite the multiple setbacks, however, the Proteas made a remarkable comeback to seal the three-match series.

While Indian Test captain Virat Kohli admitted that it was a “disappointing” defeat in the post-match presentation, former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said that the series “has turned into a nightmare” for Kohli and co.

“India's cricket after lunch has just baffled me. One would've thought that you would make one last-ditch effort, bring Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami on to bowl. Because after an interval, batsmen have to reset. India's dream of winning a series for the first time in South Africa has turned into a nightmare,” Gavaskar said on-air after Temba Bavuma hit the winning runs for the hosts in the Cape Town Test.

“What can one say? Both of these victories are comprehensive for South Africa, winning by seven wickets again. India hasn't even got close. India had a big victory in first Test and I really thought that is going to be a template for the next two Tests as well. It didn't happen.”

Gavaskar further said that India's performance with the bat were disappointing and that the visitors had a great chance to end a winless Test series streak against a depleted South African side.

“That is something which is terrific for South Africa. But hard to understand as far as India are concerned. The way they dominated that first Test, I really thought they would be able to win the series. I was thinking in terms of 3-0 series win, because of the fragility of South African batting, the fact that Nortje wasn't playing.. that was a huge plus once again for India,” said Gavaskar.

"You have two inexperienced bowlers, they had Olivier who was making a comeback. Rabada was the only threat really and I thought the Indian batting would come good. Yes, the pitch had been testing but I thought the Indian batting wouldn't have too many worries.

“The application showed by South Africans in Johannesburg and here is praise-worthy. That tells the character of the team.”

https://www.hindustantimes.com/cric...s-defeat-to-south-africa-101642214656589.html

South Africa had started the series with an embarrassing 113-run defeat in the Boxing Day Test at Centurion where they had never lost.

So Elgar took upon the responsibility to pull the team together with some “hard chats” with his teammates, who responded well.

“Losing the first game of a home Test series is never ideal. I think it’s a South African trait that you always have to start slow and we almost have to be 0-1 down to actually wake up and realise that you know we were up against it and our backs against the wall and the guys responded beautifully to that.”

Asked about the change room conversations, the Proteas skipper said: “I think that ties into the conversations I had with the team prior to the second game. Guys taking responsibility and valuing their wicket a lot more. A few soft dismissals and lapses of concentration can hinder your series and ultimately that’s what got us the loss in the first game.”

Elgar said he is “very happy that the guys responded well.”

“They responded to fulfil those roles, especially from a batting point of view. We needed guys to stand up from a character point of view, make a bit more of a conscious effort and be a lot more aware of the position that they have within the side, purely to bring the best out of the player.

“Ultimately bringing the best out of the player will obviously influence the environment. So yeah, I’m glad and very, very relieved and very, very thankful of the guys for responding the way they did.

“It’s a proper squad effort, even the guys who didn’t play stood up in the right occasions for us.”

After losing the first Test, it took a lot of character from South Africa to stage a comeback and Elgar showed the way with an unbeaten 96 to chase down 240 to level the series at Wanderers.

“The momentum is something that we gained from Wanderers. Another thing is confidence especially from our batters point of view. We haven’t had a lot of that.

“But showing the guys that these guys are beatable. They’re also human beings. We are human beings playing a bloody tough sport.

“You need to get that confidence within your setup. I’d say momentum and confidence is a big thing that we’ve gained out of the Wanderers victory,” he said about their turnaround.

Thick-skinned captain, showing little emotions on camera

======================================

Leading an unheralded side, short on experience, against the world number one Indians, many had written off Elgar at the start of the series.

But he went about his role quietly to lead a remarkable coming-from-behind series win.

“I think my skin is pretty thick when it comes to on-field matters and matters that value the team in a big way.”

Talking about his learnings as a skipper, Elgar said: “I don’t want to show my emotions too much on camera. So I think from that point of view, it’s something that I’ve actually learned quite quickly.

“I haven’t had a lot of time to actually sit down and bottle everything up. I think from a captaincy point of view it definitely helped me from being a little bit more calm with regards to not panicking too soon,” he concluded.
