It won't be easy and they will struggle to get this score on this pitch but hopefully they pull this off.

South Africa are favourites here. Hard roller effect means, morning session will be easy to score. Only 122 needed with 8 wickets in hands, gives south africa a definite edge.

All depends on Elger & Bavuma, but still rooting for them to pull this off.

One pacer is not really fully fit. Only 120 odd runs ...

SA should win from here.

It's funny how the times have changed, 10 years back no one would've doubted SA chasing 240 in the 4th innings with their world class batting line up.

It's funny how the times have changed, 10 years back no one would've doubted SA chasing 240 in the 4th innings with their world class batting line up.

The last time South Africa chased 200 in the 4th innings anywhere was back in 2011.

Anyway, congratulations in advance to them for today. Sets up the series beautifully - 1-1.

Set a target of 240 by India, gutsy innings from the South African top order has left them 122 runs away from a series-levelling win in Johannesburg.

A gutsy innings of 46* from captain Dean Elgar has kept South Africa in the hunt going into the fourth day. Needing 240 to win and draw the series, the Proteas went to stumps on 118/2.

Earlier in the day, India started at 85/2, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane continued to show positive intent that helped India put on a sizeable lead the previous day. Pujara was confident in his front foot play and punished the bad balls for boundaries.

Rahane too wasn't to be left far behind as he too kept the scoreboard ticking, even smashing a six off Marco Jansen's bowling. Both Pujara and Rahane got their respective half-centuries in quick succession but failed to convert it to a big one.

Kagiso Rabada was the wrecker in chief for South Africa, helping the host gain a foothold in the game. He first dismissed Ajinkya Rahane, inducing a faint outside edge with the ball that moved away. Rabada then trapped Pujara in front of the stumps in the next over to bring in two new batters to the crease.

Rishabh Pant didn't trouble the scorers, as he fell trying to play a wild swat over cover, only to edge it into the gloves of the keeper. Ashwin showed some intent but was strangled down the legside trying to flick it behind.

India, who were cruising along at 155/2, limped to lunch at 188/6.

Shardul Thakur did not bother holding back after lunch and took the attack to the bowlers. He took a liking to the left-arm pace of Jansen, smashing him for four boundaries and a six after the break en route an entertaining 24-ball 28. However, it was Jansen who had the last laugh after Thakur holed out in the deep trying to clear the ropes.

Jansen then dismissed Shami for a duck and was involved in a heated battle with Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah was tested with short deliveries, copping multiple body blows off the bowling of Jansen. Bumrah did connect a maximum off the bowling off Ngidi but was undone by the short one in his next over.

Vihari added 21 crucial runs for the final wicket with Mohammed Siraj, with the former doing all of the scoring. The resistance did not last long though, as Ngidi cleaned up Siraj. India were all out for 266, setting South Africa a target of 240 to win.

South Africa had seven over to bat before tea and instead of going into a shell, the openers made good use of the new, hard ball, knocking off 34 of the target in the short period.

India finally got a breakthrough after the break, with Thakur trapping Aiden Markram leg before wicket to break the opening stand three runs short of a fifty.

Keegan Petersen arrived at the crease and once again gave everyone a glimpse of why he has been rated highly. He looked at ease in the crease, dispatching the bad balls to the boundary as South Africa started to slowly inch closer towards the target of 240.

At the other end, Elgar, though far from his fluent best, weathered the storm to keep Petersen company.

With pacers tiring out and not offering much, KL Rahul brought Ravichandran Ashwin on and it paid dividends. Bowling his fourth over, Ashwin extracted considerable spin to beat the bat of Petersen, who was struck on the pads missing the flick.

Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen ensured there were no more casualties in the day, taking South Africa safely to stumps at 118/2, still 122 runs away from a win.

Lol, they predicted rain for the last day of first test which never arrived, today rain was only predicted for evening and we have it right in the morning itself.

Covers are back on.

Looks difficult for any play to be possible today.

Good thing is that there is another day for this test to reach its logical conclusion.

Forecast for tomorrow looks worse. A draw is on the cards here

Rain brought bad luck to India in both Semifinals & Finals of WC matches against NZ. Lets hope it brings good luck with this match. Either make pitch difficult for South Africa tomorrow with Indian bowlers getting refreshed (Siraj improving his fitness) or at worst washout the game resulting a draw...

Idea situation for India is rain interfering to an extent of giving only fraction of time to bat (like 1.5 hour of play today and 1.5 hour tomorrow) which affects the rhythm of batsmen like it happened with India in WC SF.

Rain can make Thakur again difficult to face as he can target the stumps with variable bounce.

Thank God it didn't affect much in the last match where our chances of winning was more!

Rain was supposed to fall during the final day of the last test also , somewhere after Lunch but India quickly wrapped up the innings and didn't allow the game to prolong.

The covers are off, but any restart today is uncertain & it could rain again… fingers crossed for tomorrow… otherwise this great Test match could end up finishing in a stalemate and that would be a huge shame.

Game will start at 3:45 ground time, 34 overs to be bowled today.. Which should be enough to get the result.

34 over session should suit Indians as they can attack here while bowlers are fresh, SA scoring is so slow i doubt they will score many runs which plays into indias hands.

Rain is not predicted now until late evening, so may be we can get some 60-90 mins of play and depending on that both teams will recalculate whether rain is good for them or not

I think in any case forecast for tomorrow's first session seems to be fine.

It's all depends on how the ball behave in this session. If it assist bowlers then SA will be in trouble.

i feel Jassi has been a foot or a foot and a half short, the whole match.
the few occasions he pitched it up further, he was a handful.
I hope he course corrects soon.

Poor bowling continues from Bumrah, 5 wides conceded.

Good start by SA, favorites to square the series.

50 to Elgar. took knocks on body. the same like in 2018 jo-burg test.
What an innings, a captains knock - well played.

Worst captaincy by rahul. Not bowling thakur the best Indian bowler in this match, weather also suits his type of bowling.

Overcast gloomy conditions.
Instead of using pacers like Shami /Shaardul /Siraj our genius guy started with Ashwin :facepalm

What a poor move was it to start off with Ashwin!

95% chance of 1-1 now. It will set up the third test nicely.

IND 202 & 266
RSA 229 & 148/2 (49.1) CRR: 3.01
Day 4: 3rd Session - South Africa need 92 runs

India should pick the fittest bowlers for the next match. If Bumrah or Siraj are not fully fit, they should not be picked. Also it would act as a surprise package to South African batsmen. Looks like they have gained confidence facing these bowlers...

Looks like India have again got bad part of luck with rain! On Australia/South Africa kind of pitches, it appears rain (on used pitch) is going to help the batsmen more than bowlers in contrast to NZ/England where it spices up the pitch after rain and India were batting against NZ in world cup...

Excellent batting by the protests pair, but I reckon the rain and wet outfield has hampered the Indian attack.

Looks like getting those 3 wickets is no more easy with scoreboard pressure (reversed to bowling side now)

yep agreed, pitch is showing some signs of inconsistency so you never know, if you can remove one of these set batsmen things could change dramatically, still SA game to lose.

It needed drier surface for that ball from Thakur to deviate a bit and take an edge. But now it hit the thick part of the bat and went to the boundary...

Looks like proteas want to finish this game today with dodgy forecast for tomorrow

Don't have enough run to work with... Target should have been 300+ for that... (from the beginning)

Good knock from VDD.

65 to win, 7 wickets left.

Can India turn the tables?

much needed wicket for india, could be game on.

The match should finish today itself from any angle... Either SA should chase this down quickly or India bowl them out quickly!

IND 202 & 266
