South Africa [573/4d] beat Bangladesh [147 & 172] by an innings and 254 runs in the 2nd Test

IT was the day for the senior Standard Bank Proteas players to make their mark as South Africa continued its domination of the second Sunfoil Test match against Bangladesh at the Mangaung Oval on Saturday.

By the close of day two the Proteas had taken a huge lead of 426 runs on the first innings to put Faf du Plessis in a position to enforce the follow on before the close of play.

The day started with Hashim Amla (132 off 163 balls, 17 fours) and Du Plessis (135 not out off 181 balls, 15 fours) setting a fourth wicket partnership record against Bangladesh of 247 runs. With the opening pair of Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar having scored centuries the previous day this was only the second occasion of the Proteas having four centuries in a single Test innings.

The previous occasion happened against the West Indies at Antigua in 2005.

Kagiso Rabada then took the game even further away from Bangladesh with his sixth career five-wicket haul (5/33 in 13.5 overs) as the visitors were dismissed for a paltry 147 in 42.5 overs. Rabada has now taken 49 wickets in the current calendar year which makes him the world leader while his overall total of 97 wickets has come in only his 22nd Test match.

Should he pick up a further three to reach three figures in the second innings he will take joint third place on the South African all-time list with only Vernon Philander (17 matches) and Dale Steyn (20 matches) having achieved this landmark quicker.

The only Bangladesh batsman to make a show was Litton Das who showed up the lack of technique of his colleagues and showed what could be done with a bit of determination and application. He made almost half the Bangladesh total (70 off 77 balls, 13 fours) before becoming Rabada’s fourth victim.

The only other batsman in the top order to reach double figures was Imrul Kayes.

Not much to write, but still can't understand the logic of bowling first!

predictions for tomorrow, 350 all out?

That would be a very decent performance after being 90 and 147 all out in the last 2 innings and missing 3 of your top 5 batters.

If we can somehow stretch this game to lunch on Day 4 it will restore a fair bit of our confidence.

Well BD have been playing excellent cricket at home, however after this performance i doubt they would get too much invites. They were horrible in India as well despite having similar conditions to home.

I doubt they will cross 300...BD will keep on finding it tough even on flat pitches due to lack of a single quality batsman..their best batsman averages less than 40...tells u a lot about the quality...

Well they crossed 300 across both innings combined...

Shambolic from Bangladesh - No idea why they would bowl first after the way the first test went. Just as baffling as Pakistan carrying on with just 1 front line spinner despite the result of the first match.

Club level esque performance from Bangladesh this series. 13 wickets in wickets in 2 tests. :129:

Thank goodness the torture is over. Mushi needs to relinquish the captaincy. He was fielding on the boundary for most of the match plus cowardice drove him to his decision at the toss

KAGISO RABADA completed his second five-wicket haul of the match and his third 10-wicket haul overall as the Standard Bank Proteas beat Bangladesh by an innings and 254 runs in the second Sunfoil Test match that finished in three days at the Mangaung Oval on Sunday.

It gave them a 2-0 series victory as they now prepare for the three-match Momentum ODI Series starting at the Diamond Oval on Sunday.

For good measure Anile Phehlukwayo, playing in only his second Test match, returned career best figures of 3/36 to complement the maiden Test century that fellow series debutant Aiden Markram had made in the same match.

Rabada finished with match figures of 10/63 to take him past the mark of 100 Test wickets in only his 22nd Test match. Only Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn among South Africans have reached this landmark quicker while he is joint third on the SA all-time list alongside Allan Donald and Hugh Tayfield.

He is also the leading wicket-taker in the current calendar year with 54 dismissals.

Both Bangladesh innings lasted fewer than 43 overs as they were unable to cope with the pace and bounce of the South African attack.

Rabada was named Sunfoil Man of the Match and Dean Elgar Sunfoil Man of the Series.

The second Test match raised a total of R193 000 for the Sunfoil Education Trust (SET), bringing the total for the series to R417 500.

Where are the Bangla (test match) fans :wave

BD has a lot to do to not make games massively one sided. Skill is one thing, but why bowl first on such flat pitches.

Why wonder again and again. Mushfiqur wanted to save his team the embarrasment of being bowled out cheaply. That is why he took the defensive choice of allowing the opposition to bat first.:boycott

RICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) has congratulated the Standard Bank Proteas on their 2-0 victory in the Sunfoil Test Series against Bangladesh.

The Proteas clinched the series when they beat Bangladesh by an innings and 254 runs in the second match which finished at the Mangaung Oval today.

“Congratulations to the Proteas on their excellent start to the season,” commented CSA Acting Chief executive, Thabang Moroe. “This is a wonderful start for our new national coach, Ottis Gibson, as he prepares for a tough season that includes Test series against both India and Australia. There is no doubt that he and our captain, Faf du Plessis, are already establishing an excellent leadership partnership.

“Congratulations are also due to Dean Elgar on being the leading Test runs scorer in the current calendar year and also to Kagiso Rabada on being the leading wicket-taker.

“Kagiso also achieved the notable feat of reaching the landmark of 100 Test wickets in only 22 Test matches which makes him the joint third quickest South African, along with Allan Donald and Hugh Tayfield, with only Vernon Philander and Dale Steyn being ahead of him on the South African all-time list.

“It is the third time he has taken 10 wickets in a Test match and the maturity he has shown in leading the attack in the absence of several of our senior bowlers has been something very special.

“There have been many other highlights including Hashim Amla taking his number of Test centuries to 28 and the excellent debuts of our new caps, Aiden Markram and Andile Phehlukwayo.

“We can certainly look forward to a very exciting season of international cricket,” concluded Mr. Moroe.
