What's new

South Africa and its tale of World Cup chokes!

So will SA chase the mammoth Total or will they fell flat

Looks like another capitulation.

Can be tough sometimes. A flat pitch , bowling first and getting batted out of the game. Happened to us in 2003 CWC final.

Very very bad toss to close this

South African cricket is doing really well, men’s team reached the T20 finals, won the WTC, and now the women’s team has reached the finals too. Unlucky for them this time, but they really played good cricket.

You can’t blame voldervaart but that was an unnecessary slog sweep on that moment she played it

It had to be then, RRR was creeping up and new batters weren't up to job. After a 100 even Babar used to accelerate. It just didn't come off for her

Not the first ball of the over

She found a partner in Tyron who was looking set after taking 9 in the previous

In hindsight it could have connected for 6 and we wouldn’t have this discussion. It just seemed an odd shot right at that moment

They need to win these games or they’ll be remembered as New Zealand is remembered for making the finals and doing jack in them.

I know people will say WTC finals they won, but so did New Zealand and they are still not remembered as a world class team.

Let's put this to Rest: This SA final loss was not a choke by any means.
These girls far exceeded the expectations. We won but feel for the SAffers here, they have helped expand women cricket from the Aus, Eng, NZ stranglehold. 5 Competitive teams (with monster Australia still there) is good for the sport.

South African ladies are bigger chokers than their male counterparts.

SA men's team won ICC trophies twice. Their ladies won none. :inti

This was not a choke. India made more errors on the field.
Yeah, the only choke that started to take shape, if at all, was from India towards the end when SA were 8 down.

Thakur dropped a tough chance off her own bowling. Then next ball, Jemimah, who from what I've seen is an excellent fielder, dropped a simple one. You could see the Indian players starting to look tense over the next over while the SA dugout suddenly were all smiles. But then the runout happened shortly after and it was done.

I think Bishop called it rightly after that drop. He asked Players to stay in the moment than thinking about the future.

Lol at losing by 50 runs and calling it as a choke.. commentators rightly said they were dependent upon couple of players.
Yeah, I don't know why people still engage with that troll. India was the stronger team, the favorites and they dominated from first over and never let up and won comfortably by over 50 runs.

No one in their right mind can call it a choke.

That wicket keeper absolutely ruined the momentum. She wasted two overs of Shafali unnecessarily and that made a difference. With such a batting depth, you can't score a 17 of 29 in that situation.

100% spot on, most of the incoming batsmen just needed to come in get a single and get off strike, let the main batsmen take most of the strike. The accumulation of dot balls ultimately killed the chase. With big hitters to come, The SA should have manoeuvred into death overs better.

In the end India deserved their victory

It was more of a irresponsible innings by 2 players rather than a team choking

Prssure can make people react differently. KL Rahul has showed us in million different ways.

KL has improved, he & Shreyas guided us home in the Champions Trophy 2025 final when we lost quick 2-3 wickets in the middle overs.

Beat India in WTC though, reaching any final is no choke imo for them

yet another heartbreak... South Africa's batting choked IMO... They were banking on a single player who played 150+ knock in semis and then she delivered in the final as well but the rest of the team proved to be chokers...

No team (men or women), have ever chased 300+ in the history of big ODI finals. Whether it's world cup or CT. Even Australia hasn't.

A target of 250+ has only been chased once each in world cup and CT finals.

That's not choking, chasing in a big final is almost impossible.

That’s not choking when you don’t turn up for the day. Choking is when you fall at the last gasp. The T20 WC final was a definite choke, not this one when partnerships just weren’t there & you are finally defeated by 50 plus runs.
