No spinner might hurt the Saffers later in this game, its gonna turn and bounce.

Pitch has some turn for spinners but Lyon is just not good enough to exploit it..
Just noticed that DeVilliers is the keeper for SA, IMO bad choice cause he has a back problem, i would rather have the other keeper in place of Duminy/Rudolf
tsolekile?
that guy is a good keeper but a rubbish batsman. Duminy is underrated IMO
how is the crowd?
I fear for the Aussies in this series. We keep hearing that they have a great pace attack and it never turns up. Whereas their batting is Clarke and two old men.
I suspect that a whitewash is on the cards.
25 000, a record first day at Gabba for a non ashes test. Not bad for a working day.
Probably be smaller tomorrow given how poor out bowlers looked.
Pattinson & Siddle were supposed to be quick, 145kph+. Even Hilf used to hit over 140kph.
Now they all just roll over at 135kph with no swing. What a let down.

The pitch looks like the ashes pitches and our bowling looks poor.
Which is a worry because our batting is worse than our bowling.

SA on top but looks like Duminy might be out of this Test and probably even rest of the series.
Still 2/255 is a comprehensive win to the Saffers and we need to do better tomorrow. They haven't hurt us on the scoreboard as much as they could have.
If that happens they will need a Kallis fit to bowl for the balance of the team!
Amla was a bit slow today, but he and Shark can resume with runs at their back and ABDV is to come.
The Yarps look like a really good unit these days. i was very surprised by their 0-2 win in England - they seem to have beaten the Choke Virus.

People who are already dismissing the OZ bowling attack as rubbish over their performance so far in this test need to remember that this strip is probably a road, and most attacks would've suffered the same fate as that of the OZ today.
Goes to show how overrated Australia's bowling is.
Siddle and Hilfenhaus will never really be classed as world class bowlers and they aren't gonna instill fear in the batsmen.
The young bowlers have been given way too much hype and they don't even have 10 tests between them.
However, SA should have pushed closer to 300. Kallis was positive but Amla was pretty safe. Lets hope they can push on to around 550 tomorrow and give Australia a few overs to bat late in the day.
They aren't overrated they all average below 30. Maybe not after today.
You tell me the side with all bowlers averaging under 30.
And you really don't want to give SA a road to bat on in a first test.
I've been hearing so much about how the Australian bowling attack has transformed from the one that got spanked in the last Ashes. I was always sceptical about that, and I saw nothing today to challenge my scepticism. I think the best you can say is that with no Super Mitch, there was a bit more accuracy, but that's about it.
What terrible captaincy for Clarke to try and take the new ball when he did, prompting the umpires to go off for the light. Anyone with half a brain would have been seeking to keep them out there as long as possible by hanging on to the old ball. It's not as if SA were thrashing it to all corners at the time.
Good to see a record 1st day crowd for a non-Ashes Test match at The Gabba, despite the fact that it's a dismal place to watch Test cricket and ranks as my least favourite ground visited so far. I suppose all those weeks of having no worthwhile cricket to watch must have created a sense of anticipation.
Why is the GABBA a bad place to watch cricket?
It has been redeveloped as an Australian Rules football ground. It is an utterly soulless concrete bowl, and nearly all the seating is reserved, so if there's a decent crowd in, it's difficult if not impossible to get together with your mates. In 2006 there was a full house, but Cricket Australia's policy of trying to prevent the Barmy Army sitting together meant the atmosphere was like a morgue.
The security is absolutely stifling too. Last time I had an umbrella taken off me by a very rude security woman, despite umbrellas not being on the list of banned items. I was told I could pick it up afterwards, but needless to say, when I went to pick it up it wasn't there. I was told just to pick whichever one I fancied out of a pile of other people's confiscated umbrellas. In 2006, I actually witnessed security staff disturbing spectators in their seats while play was in progress, sniffing their bottles of mineral water for possible smuggled-in alcohol!
Good start, let's see if they can go on with it. I didn't get to see any of the day's play, anyone know what type of Gabba wicket it was? Usually you'd be looking at 450+ as a par score at the Gabba these days.
Its a shame duminy has got injured but with Start S.A have got in this test they maybe able to get by with just 10 players. I guess in next two tests it gives du plesis a chance to stake a claim as a test player going forward.

According to the radar, there is a fairly sizeable patch of no rain heading towards the Gabba and it will be there in around an hour.
The Aussies read too much into the trashing they gave to the Indians.
Uh oh Lyon on
What is the record like for Lyon in domestic matches? I heard there are couple of other contenders too for the spinners position.
