What's new

South Africa v Australia | 1st Test | Brisbane | Nov 9-13, 2012 |

Nothing better than a quality game of Test cricket.

I don't think that's a no-ball. Isn't the rule at the point of first contact, and the back part can still be in the air as long as it's behind the line?

Looked like a no ball to me? Cowan was lucky to get away with that it clearly hit his glove.

Nothing behind the line so it's a no ball, i don't feel sorry for morkel or siddle as they are both serial offenders.

Kleinveldt struggled with the ball so looks like SA may have to make do with just 3 quicks doing the majority of the bowling. Not sure if Kallis will be asked to do much with the ball given his bouts of injuries in recent times. Also no proper slow bowlers in the side except for part timers which is sure to bite them in the backside later on. Interesting couple of days ahead.

I thought SA had heaps of young tearway quicks? Why did they pick this Kleinveldt plodder instead of De Lange or Parnell or Tsotsobe etc?

Ironically Tahir would have been a far more economical (& threatening) choice.

De Lange is injured I think and Parnell has been in poor form in LOIs so that rules him out I guess. Tsotsobe hasn't been successful at Test level unlike ODIs.

Good fightback from us. Pleasing to see Cowan lift, he knows he has to and he has. Waited for the bad ball and scored at nearly a run a ball, which says again that Kleinveldt is no good.

But we are 350 behind with three wickets down.

No they do not. Rory, Parnell and Lopsy 're useless in tests. Just like England, South Africa will lose steam when Steyn and Morkel become really exhausted after a bunch of high profile series or a visit to the sunny sub continent. If anything, Australia should do well in this regard as they have plenty of depth in the bowling stakes. Shame, that they do not have the batting to back it up!

I think SA erred by continuously bowling short to him. Should have gone fuller and tried to invite the drive more.

You mean Steyn, Morkel and Philander. 3 pacers are more than enough and SA are the only team to have drawn the series in India twice in the recent past and win a series in Pak and also draw in UAE against Pak so I'd say they have done better than Eng & Aus in subcontinent.

Interesting. Parnell looked promising a few years ago, the left arm angle would balance the rest of them out nicely. Maybe he's still worth another go, he couldn't be much older than 24/25 could he?

Elgar named Duminy's replacement

http://www.espncricinfo.com/australia-v-south-africa-2012/content/current/story/590713.html

Dean Elgar, the Knights' left-hander who has played five ODIs for South Africa, has been called up to replace JP Duminy in the Test squad. Duminy was ruled out of cricket for six months with a ruptured Achilles' tendon and while Faf du Plessis remains the favourite to take his place in the starting XI, Elgar has been called a "like-for-like replacement."

Although a top-order batsman rather than a lower middle-order one, Elgar also bowls left-arm spin and could be seen to offer the same part-time bowling option as Duminy. Du Plessis, though, bowls legspin and is regarded as next in line, given his inclusion as replacement batsman over the last two tours.

Looking at crapinfo Parnell seems to have only played just a handful of ODI's and T20s this whole year so I doubt he's even close to getting a Test callup. Most of those matches he was underbowled as well. Did look like a decent prospect initially but looks to have fizzled out.

Yeah those three are class! But seems like, there isn't much beyond looking at Rory, Lopsy,Parnell.. If/when those three(though Phil still has to prove himself) lose steam, SA will stumble much like England this summer when Broad, Jimmy, Bres et al. looked shot!

Except Steyn is one of the all time greats which none of the English bowlers are.

Aussies fighting hard as usual. Cowan is a proper test opener unlike Warner, looking good for a big one. Imran Tahir may have rubbish control but this attack does need a little variety.

What's up with the channel 9 new effects? I've just watched Ian Healy trying to explain slips need to spread out a little with some silly images. I can understand new comers but the average test cricket fan doesn't need their intelligence insulted in such a way.

100 partnership. :14:

Two things:

Australians hate their commentators more than you can imagine, we have these guys rammed down our throats all summer long with their moronic comments for decades now.

If the overseas broadcaster is too cheap to supply their own commentators, then you get the Channel 9 commentary which seems to be aimed at two year olds.

Did you see the bit yesterday where Ian Healy showed the tablet? Like wow, they have a tablet! How high tech!

No I missed all of yesterdays play but I did see Slater on some shiny desk on day 1.

I actually like the Channel 9 guys especially Taylor who makes excellent points. It's not a bad mix with Ian Chappel and Bill Lawry giving insights of yesteryear and then a couple of younger pundits. Ian Healy can be annoying but over all the Aussie ex players have a lot of passion for test cricket. Bumble and Nasser are the best though.

Test cricket fans are usually pretty much clued on about the game. They don't need to be told in simple terms or with drawings about a tactical change such as a wider 2nd slip. The graphics aren't too clever either, strange mix of colours.

Partnership grows. Cowan 69 Clarke 59. 161/3

The old group are good. Its Slater, Healy, Taylor that are awful.

As someone said yesterday "Ian Healy is very lucky Kerry Packer is dead".

287 behind, but the follow on looks pretty achievable, meaning this game will be a draw. South Africa are too conservative to set us a target that could win them the game.

Smith must be kicking himself for leaving Tahir out. Fail.

great partnership this..Clarke has been a very good test captain so far...always leading from the front.

I think I have seen Petersen bowl before. Rudolph too.

Time to get Morkel and/or VP back on for another spell me thinks. Looking too easy for the batsmen out there.

Draw.

I'm calling it first.

That washout second day will prove to be a killer for the whole test match.

That was a beauty by Steyn. The wicket still has a bit for the quicks.

was hoping for a great match between two good sides..but this has turned out to be boring..

Wait a sec. So you're telling me that Steyn and Philander and Morkel and Kallis and the rest of them can dismantle the #1 side in their backyard, but not the rather more mediocre Aussies with their Cowan brigade?

Could this be the match in which Eddie Cowan finally solidifies a spot in the top order? They will have to step on it to force a result. I think the Japies will be happy with a draw.

His average as captain is 60, probably up around 67 after this innings.

Okay, just scrolled back and checked on Cricinfo. 98 since last summer, including the India series - triple ton and all. Makes sense now.

Another 100 for Clarke as predicted. Should have given him the captaincy earlier lol.
