What's new

South Africa v Australia | 1st Test | Brisbane | Nov 9-13, 2012 |

Barring an epic Englandesque collapse we should be out of the woods. That day lost to rain has probably cost either side a chance at a result.

I just noticed they made Quiney bat first drop. That was sort of retarded eh. Throw the young bloke to the wolves.

Definite sound but nothing showing up on hot spot.

He looked good though. It was a brilliant catch by Steyn on the boundary. I thought it was a six for all money.

No way can you say there's nothing for the bowlers. There's still a bit in it. Just solid batting.

Will the Aussies declare at around 350-400 to try and make at least a bit of a game of it? I hope they do.

I'm quite sure SA will return the sporting gesture. An exciting draw is certainly much better than a boring one.

Quiney at 30+ years of age can't be a long-term prospect though. Probably just a stop-gap measure.

Not really. He looked a bit iffy at times, which is to be expected by a debutant against a bowler of the class of Steyn.

Shouldn't have played the shot. It's a test match where the opposition has put on 400 and one of the our openers fell early.

Actually the wicket is looking pretty flat atm. Morkel was getting a bit out of it with his height but rest are struggling.

I love playing these guys, they are years better than us on paper but:

They drop their spinner on a leg spinners dream pitch.

They pound us with the bat for nearly two days but dont score fast enough to force the issue.

Then the worlds best bowling attack gives up 33 extras so far, including two wickets off noballs. Plus a few drop catches. And a match we should be long gone in we are on even terms and will force the draw.

I was actually quite impressed that he chose to play his natural game rather than go into his shell.

This is as bad as the gabba pitch against England 2 years ago. Just a batting exhibition.

Kevin Mitchell Junior is the worst curator in Oz at the moment, just a pity he is ruining the best pitch in Oz. He can't find the balance between greentops & roads.

Were you impressed about Warner playing his natural game?

A test cricketer needs to be able to adapt to the situation.

It's far too early to draw a line through Quiney but he made a mistake and played a shot he shouldn't have played given the situation.

If the Saffas' predicament is based on the absence of an average spinner in Tahir, then they're another pretender #1 side as far as I'm concerned.

That said, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and watch all three test matches in the series before making a call.

Warner looked out of sorts to me. Maybe if he had actually played his natural game he would have got through it.

Steyn was the catcher, bowler was Morkel.

I'm talking about his innings as a whole.

He shuffled around in his crease a lot and messed up his weight distribution in a few of his shots, including his hook shot that got him out.

Or maybe if he were actually a test batsman he would done well.

The reason Australia were good in the past was because the batsmen could adapt to different situations and bat accordingly. I can remember many innings were even guys like Ponting and Hayden ground out innings when required.

Hussey is another who does what has to be done when it needs to be done.

All this natural game stuff is the kind of excuses thrown out by the likes of Haddin when he committed suicide in the 9/21 innings.

So are you saying the shield is stripped short of quality openers at present?

The shield is short of quality batsmen at the moment.

I have confidence that Hughes will succeed and I have hopes for Khawaja as well.

Burns from Queensland is a top talent as well.

I wouldn't count on Hughes, especially now that he's moved to Adelaide and will inevitably get easy runs on the flattest wicket in the country. Khawaja, maybe. Another guy I was impressed by last season was Chris Lynn.

Next Test is in Adelaide another flat pitch, looks like series will be decided in Perth. A potentially entertaining series ruined by flat pitches.

Hussey racing to his 50 without even being noticed.

Aye. Swap Adelaide for Hobart and this tour would have the right balance. That said, Bellerive is a small ground and won't make commercial sense.

Hughes has sorted out his technique from what I have seen and heard.

Did do well in county cricket as well.

Lynn did very well two seasons back but I was quite disappointed last year.

I think he'll be just short of test class.

This is why you ALWAYS pick a specialist spinner.

Adelaide can only hold about 20,000 at the moment due to construction. It's why they won't get any one dayers this summer.

They were expecting the Gabba to have some life like it does in shield.

Not to mention that the series against Sri Lanka with three tests at Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney would be quite unbalanced in terms of pitches.

Can't remember the last time I saw any juice at the Gabba though - must have been years ago. Last year was a pancake, the one in the Ashes was even worse, as was WI the year before.....

Hobart is the best pitch, the WACA a close second.

We'll see a result at Adelaide though, it normally starts to play tiks, keep low and spin on days 4 & 5. I have seen many results at Adeliade even after 450-500 first innings scores.

Consecutive 4s by Clarke. Looks like Aus is looking to declare soon.

I'd be inclined to agree with your order.

There is a fair amount of pressure to produce wickets that ensure that tests last 5 days. The state associations which own their test grounds (the TCA and the WACA) have a greater independence to produce the wickets that they want.
