South Africa vs India | 1st test | Chennai | 26/3/2008 to 30/3/2008

I wish Steyn would just finish this off and get the fiver. This match is getting boring. No-one has hit a boundary for 75 minutes.

Ok, Morkel has replaced Steyn

just cant believe it.
may be smith wants Morkel to get a wicket that would boost his confidence.
But steyn deserved a 5er.

This is an obvious draw match, unless sri-santh or Steyn got miracle bowling spell capability of W. Akram.

Mate 4for against the Tailenders doesnt cut it for someone who was supposed to put our top batsmen in hospital.

lets see how your favorite battylickers do on a 'proper' test wicket - a Leeds or a Kingston or a Joburg or a Melbourne.

And it's 'chokers', not 'chockers', btw.

I think both of you are from the sub continent, not sure, but Perth 93 too may be an indian living in Australia like Romali.

so, dont indulge in personal attacks.

i had the same feeling when Yuvi, Dhoni and Jaffer failed and let the team down badly in australia. I think Perth93 did not mention about SRT/Dravid/Laxman/Sehwag in his post.
chill plz.

RR-

Steyn is quality.
plz accept.

Steyn so far has proven that he is just another Irfan Pathan, basically a minnow basher. God only knows what Hayden is gonna do to him when they play him next. However I am quite impressed with Morkel he looks like he could go far, barring injury..

just saw the highlights - steyn's last spell was fantastic. rapid and reverse.

This MS Dhoni is the ugliest batsman in the game - the way he got out can turn you off cricket altogther.

:)) :)) Does Irfan Pathan have 100 Test wickets at an average on under 25?

threw away the advantage! Our only hope is to get wickets upfront, hopefully bowl them out for 150 and then chase a target...i still think we can do it

Good luck. Thats the only way you ca do it. OTOH, S/A threw away the advantage too. They could have and should have scored about 700 runs.

Good comeback from SouthAfrica, they restricted India's lead quite efficiently. One thing i admire about the Saffies they never give up and are always looking for ways to get back into the game. They just seem to have a mental block against the Australians.

Quite irresponsible batting by the rest of the Indian batters .Can't believe we played like this .

Agreed totally .Brilliant exhibition of reverse swing .He bowled fantastically in this pitch .

ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Steyn on a total flat pitch still managed 25 runs per wicket . Imagine poor india if they try and play against S.A on a decent wicket....it will be slaughter .

where are the haters now ? ha ha ha ha ha....lol at loser indiams !!! Steyn is a beast !!!

goes on to show steyn improved his average by taking wickets of tailenders..

okay listen, that was just **** u off.. thing is i don't rate steyn as a poor bowler but he is not the best bowler either the way u make him out the best then the rest..

just another bowler.. perhapz better then some but not the best..

India wasted the hard work that Sehwag put in by dull batting after he got out. They were the only team with a chance to win this match due to an extraordinary knock by Sehwag, but failed to deliver. There's no way there will be result here unless Smith provides a very generous declaration.

Hmm...not so sure . Smith won't declare but India's spinner could still pull something out the hat if South Africa decide to play defensively . Certainly India have a lot to think about if they could not drive home any pressure when one of their batsmen got the fastest 300 ever .Doesn't look good for them the rest of the series......if they don't prepare flat pitches they are going to get thrashed .

This is what criciinfo (the Indian owned site) had to say about it all .

South Africa now lead by 44 with nine wickets in hand. Take away Sehwag's special innings and India have been outmatched as a team against South Africa.

Is anyone surprised ? I'm not .

Maybe the reason for that was that the other team had already raised 540 before that happened? anyway, I agree that India has played negatively this test. Hopw to see a better pitch and contest next match.

duh steyn took out india's tail. quiet an efficient tail which wags quiet a bit these days. getting the tail out is no mean feat it has to be done and he did it.
of course baji doing the same in the first innings means that we will have to stick with that looser till 2010 <banging head against wall>

and harbajan got a fiver at 32.
does that make him a great bowler??
I think not

steyn is a good bowler . He swings the ball miles . What's controversial about that ?

No excitment at all in this match...boring because of the "flat" pitch :12:

I dont know when these Asian boards will change their mentality and produce some quality decks which offers same amount of help to both a bowler and a batsmen which will lead into exciting matches.

I'm tired of these so called batting paradises :12:

Yeah . Don't even have the india arrogance on this board to entertain us now with their stories of their brilliant god like team .

What's the next match going to be played on ? the cowards will never produce a pitch that helps the fast bowlers...they would get crushed like always .

the main problem is the myth that S.a can't play spin . Maybe they couldn'y like 5 years ago but that's long sinced changed . India will get no joy with that tactic .

Nope, main problem is that they are worried about what Steyn and Morkel will do to them if the picth has anything in it which is rubbish as our batting is better. Also just spin and world class spin on a crumling wicket are two different things and even top sides can struggle

BTW, with Steyn's performance in this test, you can rest assured that the next pitch will be flatter!

I dont know what they are so worried about . They competed with australia on fast bouncy tracks . Surely that is their best chance to win ?

Thats what I thought too, as all our recent success, even in the 20/20s were when we outbowled oppositions and not outbatted. It was our seamers who performed well, our spin bowling has declined.

That said it was just the safer option, on home pitches. As you said, they might have also assumed SA would struggle against spin thoguh nowadays very few teams struggle against spin, one of the reason being the absence of great spinners. Alos, Ishant missing and RP just back from injury might have been factors.

So when will SA declare? Will Smiffy go for a win?

So when will SA declare? Will Smiffy go for a win?

Not a hope in hell .Nothing in the track and sehwags form in the first innings will make any traget seem possible. We will probably see a mutual calling off of the game after the second session with both teams happy to get away from this stupid pitch .

OZGOD said:

they should just declare to get a chance at sehwag .. he is notoriously bad in his second innings and if they get him today cheaply saffies can get some sort of psychological boost.

Lunch, 11.30 pm local time: South Africa lead by 125 runs with eight wickets in hand. They've scored 81 runs in the session for the loss of Amla for 81. McKenzie has batted through the session and is on 88 and he has Kallis with him. Kumble's beginning to get considerable assistance on this pitch and although South Africa have steadily moved towards safety, their batsmen could face some testing overs after the break. I'll be back in 40 minutes for the second session.

Bowling last on this wicket would have been an advantage if you had the spinner to profit from it.

Now it's definitely Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz :28:

smith still hasn't declared ... wow ... booooooring !

Devilliers thiefed out by India. Cue for the deafening silence...

94.3 Sehwag to de Villiers, OUT, caught! de Villiers leans forward to defend and the ball lobs up to Ganguly at short leg for a simple catch, Sehwag is thrilled with the breakthrough but de Villiers looks disappointed, there was no bat there, straight of the pad by the looks of it
AB de Villiers c Ganguly b Sehwag 11 (49m 40b 0x4 0x6) SR: 27.50

If I were Smiffy I would bat till stumps just to rub it in to the curator.

And McKenzie becomes the third player to score 150 in this match - congratz!

Zzzzzzzz :28:

saffer said:
Yeah . Cue notable lack of calling the umpire a cheat too .

Cue *selective memory loss*. This thiefing out of De Villiers never happened! :P

And the captains have decided to put an end to the tedium - it's a draw. McKenzie is unbeaten on 155.

Tell you what... Next time any of the sub continent teams tour SA, please ask your board to prepare some turning tracks. That should drill some sense into these stupid Indians.

OZGOD said:

LOL if that happened against Australia there would be riots and Indian commentators talking about how dishonest the catcher was when it clearly didn't hit the bat etc.

Then we would find out the name of the umpire and declare him part of the worldwide conspiracy against India.

Glad to see match has been called off. I am sure there will be a spicy bowlers wicket for the next game :19:

Cue no comment from the Indian crew (aside for the odd sensible one who might take the bait :D )

Last time pakistan and india toured south africa the tracks took more turn than this dead wicket .

Only unless they ban the umpire from ever standing in tests again . He's anti south african and part of the bilderburg group .

well played SAF. Still unconvinced about how they play spin bowling, the pitch was pretty flat and dead. Ahmedabad and Kanpur hopefully turn so that we can expose this weakness.

Having said that, Amla and McKenzie looked good in this test.

It's a shame, that a series which is basically two teams going for the number 2 spot in the rankings had to open up with this pathetic pitch!

sachin ruled out of 2nd test so kaif is backed

fari enough he didnt do anything wrong to be dropped from the test side

come on kaif justify ur place ahead of yuvi
