What's new

South Africa vs India | 2nd Test | Centurion | Jan 13-17, 2018 | Day 1 | Discussion Thread

Shami's bowling is kinda like up and down, you don't know when to expect the dangerous or mediocre Shami. Right now he is quite bad

Looks great sometimes and bad many times. With this attitude he will go down as avg bowler for sure. Though he is very gifted bowler we ever had.

Shami is moody, when in rhythm will pick 2/ 3 in quick succession so better hold him back when he's not pitching it right.

He can be better with old ball i guess when others will struggle. But this pitch looks alot batting friendly. Can't wait to watch our batting.

How is good is this Wiaan Mulder? Read an article of him being future star of South Africa.

Mulder looks exciting but currently he's being phased in slowly at the Lions. He's currently batting at 8 and bowling as second change but anyone that's see him play will tell you that he's at best good enough to bat at 6. There are a lot of young players pushing for a place and Mulder is one of them. He'll definitely be In contention for the World Cup selection when the time comes.

Ashwin getting some nice turn, no pace, no bounce, no seam movement but there is turn.. Is this match really in South Africa or India ?

SA will score around 450 plus I feel,
and Indians will get around 340,
SA will score a further 290 in second innings and declare.
Indians draw the match with 2 wicket to spare.

you heard it here first..

If SA score 290 in the 2nd, it will be at a faster pace.

I don't see India surviving 4th innings until a second new ball.

India's only chance to draw is to score heavily in the 1st.

Although, anything can happen in a cricket game :kohli

Umm draw is definitely possible, I think this wicket is flatter than the ones in India.

On a wicket were he needed more bowlers than batsmen, Kohli was forced to pick the wrong side. SAfricans totally trolled Indians here, they knew Indians would go with a strengthened batting after the last test match so they went with a flat track to trick Indians into playing more bats with the confidence SA bowlers can still get on top but Indians cant with a weaker bowling line up.... Its all adding up now..

If pitch behaves on traditional style last 2 days batting will be so tough once fastbowler come into play.Eng were something like 200-2 here last time and lost from their to rabadas massacre

Did thread on him a few years back. He's a great talent. I don't like that he's not batting in the top 5 though. He's more of a batting all rounder for me. I'd push him up the order.

He's definitely batting far too low. Been suprised by his bowling though, looks very consistent and bowls at acceptable pace.

How do people come up to conclusions before both sides have batted? This wicket is flat?

Anyway I'm not happy with this surface, Ashwin is getting it to turn on day one. SA will have to score 400+ to mitigate for a second innings collapse. They'll probably have to have a lead of 80+ at the very least.

I am sure in your alternate universe, old ball swings more than the new ball.

The Cape Town surface wasn't abrasive enough to soften the ball/seam. The juice and the tinge of green made batting hard in the first hour or so. The pitch had settled by the time India went to bat. It was baked by the sun during the lunch break, India used a heavy roller to flatten the surface for 7 minutes. That happened in this universe.
But yeah, good luck convincing yourself India had it tough. Even Indian journalists are aware of that fact.

One thing that has been consistent is both teams seem to have no clue how to read the pitch in both matches. Also I wouldn't worry about the collapse ashwin can't do much given he will have no help from the other end.

Looks south africa will score 400+ on this pitch unless bumrah or shami produce a good spell.

Of course, its always SA who have it tougher, whether they are touring, or playing at home after winning toss.

South Africa have read this pitch well, it's a bat first surface.
However I don't agree with the talk that this surface will quicken. It's different from the NZ surface 2016. That pitch had side ways movement, even though it was on the slower side. It was a bit green too, as a result it did get quicker on day 2. I don't think that's the case here. This pitch will bake and bake until it cracks late on day 3.

Will be interesting to see what happens on day 4 and 5.

Dude watch that game, the ball was moving around in the morning more than it did in the afternoon session. India didn't even lose a wicket until the 7th over.
So yes the old ball was doing more than the new one.

Anything that isn't green is a bat first pitch it's the team selection that tells you how they have read the pitch. Should have gotten another spinner or at least Morris to use the extra bounce.

Ashwin is bowling well here. 85/1. Where's the curator hiding?
Perhaps he saw green wickets in India, he has some explaining to do.

Two spinners at Highveld?
No thanks, our fast bowlers are way superior to our spin bowlers in any case.
Spinners average 48 in this ground as is.

But that is history this pitch is turning on day 1, never seen that happen in SA. Also I wouldn't be too harsh on the curator Cricinfo did a article on the issue he faces to get this pitch ready pre game read it.

Surprise Surprise, a spinner gets the first breakthrough... If Ashwin gets on a roll and puts SA in trouble it will be down right laughable.. Why SA would make a wicket like this ? Lord only knows....

Kohli's 34th unique team in 34 test matches. We have dropped our best bowler and one of our better batsmen from the last game.

Amla in Centurion: 16 innings, 1202 runs @80.13, 5 hundreds, 6 fifties. His last five scores are 208, 109, 96, 58 and 1 (latest)

Ominous!

The turn is slow, nothing exaggerated. But it's keeping the Indians interested. Doesn't justify playing two spinners in these conditions, not at the expense of your main strength. Both teams will have to bat first before we can make conclusions as to team composition.

The curator is a tool though, there's no rain drought in the Gauteng province. There was no reason for this wicket not to be green. He had enough time to prepare the wicket, especially with the global T20 postponed.

Yeah Amla showing his Indian-ness of having a strong liking to the FLAT TRACKS.. Wouldnt be surprised if he got another big one here...

Looks like we're easing Amla back into form.

I'm willing to bat you've not seen Ngidi bowl right? If you're talking about bounce then he's the man for the occasion.

Amla is gonna ton up here. This the kinda pitch where he goes big, in fact he averages around 80 at Centurion if I'm not mistaken.

SA will score ~500, India will score around 300-350ish with one good performance from Kohli or someone else who gonna score a 100.. SA will give India a target of around 400 and Indian innings gonna falter in second innings and we will lose by around 150-200 runs..

Ashwin Bags Markham against the run of play. oooooh! Missed his 100 in front of this parents. Heart Break!

:out:

Just tuned into the match. Why did SA dish out flat pitch?

This looks some pitch in Vishakapatnam than SA. Hope India bats well too and not throw the wickets away.

Patel dropped a catch off Ishant. Reprieve for Amla. He wont give more chances. Looks like another unlucky day for Ishant in white colors.

If India's luck depends on one chance of Amla then that is a problem.

Bumrah using elbow to generate pace and sudden change in length , blatantly, every now and then.. hmmm

Indian batting line up looks a lot stronger in this match.

Wish BK was playing. He would have added more strength to batting.

Something tells me this will be a draw. This is the kind of pitch where Rohit can also perform. Ball is going gun barrel straight after pitching.

Did India do a mistake of not picking Jaddu ?

Nothing much in the pitch by looks of it so Indian batsmen should prosper

For that 74 innings, I failed to watch this Test😩

Spent whole night on sofa, but ...

How is the wicket? Scorecard tells only Ash.

By the way - I knew Sharmaji won’t be dropped after one Test where everyone failed with bat.

Can someone tell me why they dropped BK our best chance to take early wikets is with BK bowling with new ball.. You need an early wicket if you don’t get and openers settle rubbish bowlers like Ishant won’t be doing anything..
