South Africa and Pakistan will lock horns in a five-match one-day international series, the first of which will be played in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, 19 January.

Overview

South Africa v Pakistan
1st ODI
St George's Park, Port Elizabeth,
Saturday, 19 January, 1.00pm local time, 11.00am GMT

Having completed a comprehensive sweep over Pakistan in the three-Test series, hosts South Africa will hope to extend their dominant run of form into white-ball cricket. Skipper Faf du Plessis, who, at No.7, is also South Africa's top-ranked player in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Player Rankings for batting, will be keen to get a series victory under his belt ahead of the 2019 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

The Proteas' bowling attack looks potent with the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir, and Andile Phehlukwayo in their ranks. Additionally, Duanne Olivier, who was exceptional in the Tests, has also been drafted into the 14-man squad in place of the rested Dale Steyn for the first two ODIs.

Their batting line-up, however, looks a tad inexperienced, with JP Duminy out with injury and Quinton de Kock rested. A lot will depend on the experienced duo of du Plessis and Hashim Amla in the first two games.

Pakistan, on the other hand, will want to bounce back quickly from the setback in the Test series. They are a more cohesive unit in the shorter format of the game and stand fifth on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Team Rankings, just behind South Africa.

Pakistan's pace battery, which has been their strongest suit over the years, looks daunting once again. The likes of Hasan Ali, Mohammad Amir and Shaheen Afridi will enjoy bowling on the seam-friendly conditions in Port Elizabeth. The teenager Afridi impressed in bursts during the Test series, claiming nine Proteas scalps in two games.

The visitors will rely heavily on their experienced batting line-up, especially seasoned campaigners like Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez. In-form batsmen Shan Masood and Babar Azam – Pakistan's leading run-scorers in the Test series – will also play a significant part.

Faf du Plessis (South Africa): With Duminy and de Kock out of the game, a large chunk of the batting responsibility will fall on the Proteas skipper. With 434 runs in eight innings at an average of 62, he was South Africa's leading run-scorer in 2018 in ODI cricket. His contribution with the bat and as a captain will be crucial to the hosts' starting the series with a win.

Babar Azam (Pakistan): Azam, who is No.5 on the MRF Tyres ICC ODI Batting Rankings, is the lynchpin that holds the Pakistan line-up together. He returned impressive performances in the Test series, notching up two fifties in six innings. He might very well be the key to their chances in the first ODI.

Conditions

The forecast for Port Elizabeth predicts cloudy conditions midway through the game, which, in South African conditions, may be conducive to seam bowling.

So yet another Pakistani top order batting collapse :p

Anyways, come on boys! win it! :amir

I expect the Pakistani top order to collapse but Imam scoring a 120 ball 100.

InshaAllah Fakhar will give us a cracking start to the series!

I reckon 280+ would be enough to defend for both teams, what are your thoughts about this?

We should aim for 270-280 if we bat first and should look to restrict South Africa below 235 if we are chasing.

Surprise that Saj didn't have any early team news.

Be interested to see how we line up. Rizwan and Shan have been in good form . Would be harsh to leave them out.

Rizwan will be left out as he is a direct threat to the ever reliant Sarfraz. On the other hand, it's almost impossible to not play Masood but again, this is Pakistan and there is no impossible.

Strangely last 5 matches head to head is 4-1 in favour of Pakistan. Also Pakistan have never lost at Port Elizabeth. Good Omen guys

PAK has never lost to SAF on this ground in ODI. It’s one of the slowest & lowest wickets in SAF, made for Malik, Hafeez.

Banghra will probably commence if we win this game, but we have to stay grounded and remember there will be 4 games left after today.

The pitch in Port Elizabeth tends to be slower and more spin friendly compared to other grounds in South Africa. This venue represents the best opportunity of a victory in this series.

Expect our batsmen to get bounced out again lol

Imam ahead of Shan as expected. His stats are boosted from that cursed series against Zimbabwe C.

SA trying out new players , Pakistan still sticking with known rubbish in the middle order and 3 so called all rounder.

Amir and Shaheen not playing instead of Shinwari:)))

Fakhar Zaman
Imam Ul Haq
Babar Azam
Mohammad Hafeez
Shoaib Malik
Sarfraz Ahmed
Imad Wasim
Shadab Khan
Faheem Ashraf
Hasan Ali
Usman Shinwari

The middle order consists of two experienced players.
Also Hussain Talat was expected to make his debut dunno why he didn't

I’d go with Shinwari ahead of Amir in the OD format. Latter hasn’t picked a wicket in the format since god knows when.

Because we need Hafeez experience even though he plays mostly as an opener.

S Africa bowlers will murder our batsmen. Too many walking wickets in the teeam

They could literally have thrown all the names in a hat and picked random 11 and still a better team would be selected than this.

This is exactly what bits and pieces galore is. Hafeez. Malik. Sarfaraz. Imad. Shadab. Fahim. And then a favorite nobody to boost up an already super solid squad in the form of Imam.

:))

Dissapointed not to see Shan or Rizwan there sigh.

Shan is not playing and this is supposed to be a batting wicket. Really really dissapointed :((

Shaheen will be starting in the WC anyway. No biggie if he’s rested for a few games here or there before the WC. Fast bowlers need to be rotated.

The more worrying selection is Imam. Shan deserves a go ahead of him

TBH the SA lineup doesn't inspire much confidence and that too on a SC type wicket.

Batting is deep BUT I see no Shan, Shaheen. Disappointed. Rizwan deserved a go as well.

Why are Pak management so afraid of rotating?

The coach, management and captain have all been raving about Shan during and after the series. The guy has been putting up Bradman-esque numbers in List A for the past two years so clearly this is supposed to be his best format. Still, they choose to not pick our most in-form batsman. Why? Probably because we won our last ODI series and it's programmed in their mind to not change the "winning" formula or else the team will spontaneously combust.

Rubbish. Absolute rubbish.

Exactly
It is a pretty good decision tbh

Shinwari averages infinity against Top opposition.
Shinwari is decent, nothing too special but I’d take him ahead of the wicketless wonder everyday of the week.

Didn’t Amir average a 100 or so in ODI cricket in 2018?

So Pakistan is playing with 5 allrounders?? Malik, Hafeez, Shadab, Imad, Faheem. If you add Mr Captain that’s become six. That’s quite a few. 😇😇😇

Sarfraz in his press-confrence last night said that chasing is going to be difficult, so expect more of negative body-language from the leader

And before anybody comes out with the usual "wrist-slitters out in full force before a ball has been bowled", seriously, have a word with yourself. If you think this is a team that has been picked on merit and is the best 11 we can possibly put out then you're deluding yourself.

Horrible line up when will this love with imam end
2 genuine pacers only . Wow this looks poor from all ends

With SA batting first , hasan ali & usman r the key , don't give too many runs in first 10 overs and finally keep the score below 260 overall

Fakhar Zaman
Imam Ul Haq
Babar Azam
Mohammad Hafeez
Shoaib Malik
Sarfraz Ahmed
Imad Wasim
Shadab Khan
Faheem Ashraf
Hasan Ali
Usman Shinwari

That is awful! Imam should not be playing; Shan Masood should. More then that, Safraz is playing at No6! He should be no higher then 8. No confidence in any bat under Malik. Pakistan is two proper batsman short.

Exactly.
At least Shinwari is able to take wickets in the UAE.
Unlike Amir who couldn't even take wickets against Zimbabwe

Sarfraz has wasted his career as captain
Throwing himself at number 7 when he can clearly play at 4

Pakistan’s national anthem sounds beautiful, even though I didint understand any words.

SA national Anthem probably sounds best in Cricket!!

I really hope the starting XI come the world cup is very different from this . .

First of all, Pakistan needs to stop living in the world where Faheem is an all rounder . . can anyone remember ONE - just ONE - good innings that he has played in LOI? He may well smack slower, medium paced bowlers . . no chance against India, SA, England, Aus, NZ, etc . .

Secondly, Imad and Shadab in the same line up? Shadab has to play in ODI period . . if anything, it should be a competition between Imad and Faheem

Thirdly . . Faheem as the 3rd pacer in SA? Are you for real?!? I wouldn't evne play faheem as the 3rd pacer in the UAE . . absolutely ridiculous!!

Pakistan needs to go in with 3 front line fast bowlers . . Most likely . . Amir, Shaheen and Hasan . . if Amir isn't doing well . . you replace him with Shinwari or Junaid or anyone else . . but front line!

Imam . . well, tbh idk where I stand with him . . he has been decent in LOI . . in the Asia cup he was fine . . but personally I would like to see shan open . .

Lastly!, number 6/7 is the biggest problem in Pak! They need a batting all rounded . . and for me, Hussain talat trumps faheem on that! so I would not have any place for faheem in my team . .

In short, this is a poor poor team!!

Faheem is a pretty decent bowler and has certainly performed better than Amir in the last year or so.

You're really underestimating Faheem.
He is a pretty decent bowler
