What's new

South India

I am a Telugu person and I have very little in common with Tamil culture. Whoever calls South Indians as Madrasis is an idiot and needs some education. Its like calling a Rajasthani guy a Bihari.

Mumbai and Delhi are the two most racist places in India. Just because they have distorted and abused a word, doesnt mean it should be given pan india acceptance. Madrasi is a valid word which signifies the history of most south indian states, since Madras Province included present Tamil Nadu, parts of Kerala and Karnataka and most of Andhra Pradesh.

All true , but for the important fact that all these areas currently are not under madras region for a reason .

All true , but for the important fact that all these areas currently are not under madras region for a reason .

That is fine. Someone can prefer to call himself a Jharkhandi, but it is not exactly wrong to call him a Bihari, since Jharkhand was part of Bihar.

It would be shame if perfectly legitimate terms like Madrasi or Bihari become associated with insults. It's the attitudes which need to change, not the local descriptions.

you will be surprised , how many will you correct you if called a Bihari now , Can you imagine 70 years from now ?
Am not a Madrasi , infact our parts of the state was never part of Madras . No ones going to call me that , simple .

Whats exactly wrong with the word Pakistanis are insulted with in UK ?

The word is abbreviated and usually followed by an expletive. Otherwise if they just said Pakistani, how could it be considered an insult?

The abbreviate even without the expletive is censored in PP . Do ppers who are predominantly Pakistani origin use these expletives when they address themselves along with the term?

So it means very little what the term originally stands for , right ?

The abbreviate doesn't mean anything though, it's usually used in a derogatory manner. The equivalent to Bihari or Madrasi would be Pakistani, not Pak*.

Bro, that is a point well taken. I agree that with time people will forget their older identities and acquire the new ones. My point is that there is nothing derogatory in the term. And it is the context which makes something insulting, not a valid term used to describe people some decades ago, and is still used by the older generation.

Its not the doer who decides whether his action are taken as offensive or not, Its the recipient of a certain action who get to decide that!

Bro, you are not the recipient, then how come you are deciding Madrasi is offensive?

It is not derogatory, bro. It is like saying calling a a north Indian, a Hindustani is derogatory. Some may like to be called by their new narrow regional names, but there is nothing derogatory in the term Madrasi, after all Madras Presidency, followed by Madras Province has had a longer history span compared to the newly created states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala etc.

It is like calling Pakistanis "Pakis". I'm sure many of Pakistanis find it offensive.

It is like calling Pakistanis "Pakis". I'm sure many of Pakistanis find it offensive.

I already explained this, it's not the same at all. There is no such word as "Pakis", that is why it is deemed offensive, Madrasi is just the same as Pakistani, nothing offensive about either, or at least it shouldn't be the case.

Madrasi by word with out context is not derogatory by Definition.

But words dont work in isolation and they come with a certain baggage, people of south India or from Tamil Nadu do not call themselves Madrasi...they call themselves differently like chennai-ites or Tamilian or chennai-karan. Like for example, People of Chennai do not call themselves Madrasi like people of delhi call themselves Delh-ites. So whenever the term Madrasi is used it is often comming from a north Indian with a negative connotation or from a place of contempt. It was used for long as a slur for people of south India from time of british...and hence even if it is not comming from negative space, for a people of south India..word has a negative connatation by default...this is the reason people get offended.

Good logic. Try calling a Pakistani, as Indian.

Pakistan was never a part of India. However, the part east of Indus and north India was called Hind. That is why older generation arabs still call some Pakistanis as Hindi. There are 3 issues here:

1. The main one is that should a term with valid historical basis be taken out of use just because some bigots used it in derogatory context?

2. Is it wrong to term a place or people by its older name? eg. calling a Tamilian as Madrasi.

3. Is it wrong to term a place or people by their older name even if they have separated and formed different regions? eg. calling an Andhraiite as Madrasi as the region was part of Madras Province. (I agree this is more due to ignorance or out of habit)

I think it is narrow parochial mindset which insists on being called the newly christened names. Just like Shiv Sena who get offended if Mumbai is called Bombay. At least tamilians should stand for their heritage and history and not let Madrasi being hijacked as a slur.

What is so wrong in calling a person a monkey which is a God actually? Who has a say in that? Harbhajan Singh or Symonds?

Not yet. Will catch up with it here and there.

I have a close friend who is involved with TNCA in running it.

The league is Srini's brainchild and when Srini Mama and India Cements get involved, the branding shoots up cos they know how to conduct tournaments for decades now.

Today I was asked by my another close friend to attend the match today. He is not into cricket much but then his brother is playing for Lyca Kovai Warriors.

Vignesh Krishnamoorthy.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/721939.html

He was bought for 2.5 lakhs.

All rounder.

Had a good decent game last time.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/1047347.html

Will have to check out his video. Will try to start a thread asking for PPers views on his bowling quality.

Lolz, are those matches getting telecast in Pakistan as well? I watched first 3 matches and then got bored. Watched Murali Vijay choke in the super over.:narine

Yes, Dean Jones, Styris, Lee, Hayden, etc., are involved in the promotion and commentary. Bevan and Klusener are coaches for the teams. And the graphic is quite good as well. All due to one and only person.

Where Srini mama is there, the dollars are there.:srini

its been coming for a few weeks i think but saw highlights of some match today

only recognized ashwin and his brother was also playing in the same team.

lol the pacers are uber trundlers but spinners are good

didnt see any foreign players

Nowadays having only Madrasi food. Idli for breakfast, uttapam with coconut chutney for lunch, rice with gongura pappu for dinner. Sometimes kesari bath for sweets. Madrasis are my favourite indians.

No surprises with the bowlers. I only watched for any potential batsmen. There is one Baba Aparajith who is a good batsman and hit a century off 48 balls in the 2nd match. His twin brother Baba Indrajith is a decent bat as well. Don't really know about the others..

To me the ads are annoying every time an ad break comes they start that song in Tamil and it becomes annoying since every ad break they played that ad during eng vs Pakistan odi.

Watched bits and pieces of one of the matches the league itself looks decent.. Good initiative..

I need to watch couple of games to see the quality. Don't be surprised if they bring players like Yuvi or Shehwag starting next season. Lyca and Indian cements can bring even Sachin and Dhoni if those two agree to play in TNCA. Basically this is like the minor league of IPL. Is it being broadcasted ?

Yes.

Start sports.

Quality of cricket isn't high.

But then its expected. Its TNPL.

Broadcasting is good but the over emphasis on Tamil stuff is a bit cringeworthy.

When batsmen come on to crease......

It has come at the right time when CSK isn't there in IPL,so we are defn having two good seasons of this tournament.

I remember the College/University T20, i think Jamia Milia won that, that was really interesting imo.
Surprisingly there are so many school/College T20's being conducted nowadays one would be surprised.

Better than North India apart from Punjab, especially better than West Bengal. Mogadishu > Kolkotta

Good thread to read for Ignorant Marathi like me.

Is there similar thread about Rest of India? And about Pakistan?

I feel left out, we need a North India/Greater North India thread.

Punjab is pretty terrible now imo just good for parties and drugs(except beautiful Gurudwaras) ,Himachal,Uttrakhand are probably best places in North India.

Yeah.. We felt the same when they played that Kabadi song in Hindi between overs.. That too without a team from Tamil Nadu.

how come marathis are so different/isolated from south india.

geographically they are much closer to south but the impression i get is that they are much closer to north india and punjab culturally and how the people are

South indians (tamils) are very different from pakistanis esp and i guess north indians

in college i had a group of friends from delhi/punjab and some ffrom mumbai and we all got along as we seemed very culturally in tune with each other for most part

when i moved to a different city i used to play cricket with some indians who were 90% tamil (and some other south indians like kerala ppl i guess). Absolutely nothing in common in terms of being from similar culture. Like being friends with them would be being friends with someone from eastern europe etc as in very little similarity in mizaaj, humor or culture

Mumbai hardly represents Marathi culture . Over 70 percent of population is from outside. Marathis there speak Hindi and get along with North Indians for most part. It is when u go further from Mumbai that u will see the real Marathi culture . Besides Bollywood is located in Mumbai hence most locals are invested in it and work there also in television industry u will see plenty of Marathi actors and actress hence. Even in Pune college u can clearly see the divide between locals and outsiders and the differences. Marathi culture is very unique and it has nothing in common with Pakistani culture

Most Kabaddi viewers are hardly urban anyway, seems fit to use the local language there, cricket is universal and it could have both English and Tamil versions imo.

I find Marathis not from Mumbai way better and tbh a bit close to some cultures of Karnataka.

You won't find anything in common with a guy from say North East either, they are only into football and rock music, cultural diversity is good for a country like India considering how the hindi belt tries to force its domination. (UP/Bihar)

I find marathis and kannadigas to be like cousins. Lots of history between the 2 states and they also do intermarriages quite frequently.

Err No its not and it never will be,its an official language at best.

ok most widely spoken

and i guess most non indians, if they know, think its national language

Yup inspite of border issues and trouble being tried to create by Shiv Sena they usually remain calm,Belgaum is probably my fav place in India and it has Marathi people living in a Karanataka state, very friendly and amazing culture.

Love the tier-2 cities with university culture Roorkee as well but Belgaum is just amazing.

Yea that's annoying too.. Too much advertising same song after every 6 balls is annoying and is over marketing should be limited..

Actually it was written in our text books that Hindi is the national language but then someone filed an RTI asking about the same and the judge said that it is not the national language.. So Now it has been removed from text books as national language..

It is normal for Malayalaees(Kerala) and some Telugus FOBs to get along more with Sri Lankan Tamils for example than Indian Gujus or Punjabi because of the language and cultural differences. Usually Telugu and Kannaigas speak Hindi, Malalaylees speak less Hindi so they hang out more with Tamils of SL than, Indians of North. It is normal.

Ya I heard that the Uptja Punjab or whatever the movie was based on the increase of drugs in Punjab. Do girls get involved too ? Are Punjabi girls in Punjab more reserved ?

Punjabi girls are far from "reserved",they are probably like the ones you meet in Canada considering they migrate from Punjab villages to Toronto.

But the girls as far as i can tell aren't into drugs as much the guys but drinking yeah, but tbh everyone drinks nowadays.

It seems like lot of Punjabis come straight from Village to here, missing even the Punjab city life. Maybe that is why they are more genuine and get along very well compared to Gujus ?

Most new immigrant girls are very reserved, then in my last year of high school this girl from Delhi showed up, she did everything from drinking to weed and blah blah blah. She was an international student though, so probably from a wealthy background. Are wealthy girls more "westernized" than girls from middle class family ?

yes this is true most punjabis migrate straight from Rural areas, punjabi girls in general living in punjab( not chandigarh) are reserved contrary to the general stereotype, 95% of girls do not do drugs or drinking i do not know how they behave in canada

Wealthy girls have more freedom but tbh any girl from Delhi,Bangalore,Kolkata,Mumbai,Pune has say more freedom compared to rest of India.

Not sure about genuine Punjabis,I don't really have many Punjabi friends(ironical) can't comment on that except that i found my punjabi family from villages "weird" and different,Gujjus are genuine too but just that they are on the opposite scale of humility.

Does south India practise a purer form of Hinduism as per Jadeds post below? Is the Hinduism followed elsewhere mixed/adulterated?

Yeah that might not be true,Aryans or whoever brought Hinduism is a misconception,The south Indian kingdoms have always been pure believers of Hinduism as such not only do they have detailed Temples with marvellous architevture of Hinduism but also have a lot of literature on the same.

Hinduism also spread outside the subcontinent thanks to South India, also there hasn't been any mixing of Hinduism with Sikhism,Buddhishim or Islam like in North India, its more of pure form here.

Does south India practise a purer form of Hinduism as per Jadeds post below? Is the Hinduism followed elsewhere mixed/adulterated?

The Vedic culture in South India has been in some respects the best preserved of ancient Vedic culture and traditions. In North India during late ancient and medieval periods, Buddhism, Sikhism and Islam flourished alongside the Hindu majority. Every intermixing influenced North Indian culture, in particular Islam. The influence of Islam, specifically Sufism, and Sikhism are widespread in the modern-day North Indian society, clearly palpable in linguistics, music, attire, etc. Much of this influence can be attributed to close to a millennium of Muslim rule across North India. Unlike in the North, South India had less outside inlfuence until the advent of European imperialists. As such the original Hindu traditions are relatively better preserved in South India than in North India

Liberal, beef eating and literate keralite hindus follows the most ancient form of Hinduism. Here priests conducts thousands of years old vedic rituals. Pilgrimages from other states often complaints about strict rules they need to follow to enter temples in kerala.

So that is where the saree tax and the namboodiri-nair marriage ritual comes from.

Jallikattu ban is actually a joke, all the calves that were trained to be doing Jallikattu are being given away for slaughter and butchers are buying them, remarkable hypocrisy of SC,they just never seem to be on right side this past 2 years.

Guess from being indifferent to it finding this annoying habit of any regional culture being looked down upon,I understand casteism as that promotes discrimination and division but this ban looks totally flawed.

I saw Simbhu's long rant on Youtube. Never seen a Youtube video that long continuously. I think finally Tamil Nadu is realizing the "Us vs Them" mentality among central government ran by North Indians. I know i start North vs South fight for entertainment, but this is serious.

That has always been there mate, till 1965 or something the DMK,DK's were asking for independence as well, guess later with sedition get outlawed and MGR being pro Indian and death of Rajiv Gandhi things turned around.

In this issue tbh I find the SC at fault, the whole case how it exploded was remarkable ,it wasn't even a case on Jallikattu and got expanded on that by a judge in Madras HC.

This is the problem with Indian SC when it comes to laws like this and then BCCI they want to interfere directly but then when Homosexuality law or beef laws are concerned they pass it on to Parliament ,don't even understand how they function here. They didn't know anything when Karnataka was supposed to release water to TN which was their order.

I'm a supporter of PETA but sometimes they are too radical for their own good, also how people are picking on Trisha is terrible shows how low people can go.
