What's new

South Indian Cinema and Songs

We get Jeya TV along with many Tamil Tv channels including the local ones, and I swear the amount of propaganda in Jeya tv exceeds North Korean state television hands down. Wait those new red buses play old songs ? The air conditioned ones ?

Here are two of my new favorites.

Sangeetha Megam is still so famous iconic SPB voice.I sometimes get to hear it Tamil receptions as well.
Yes man the ac ones which is so annoying i guess its like the AIADMK propaganda unless the driver himself prefers MGR :|

Question time, how does lot of Malayalee speak tamil ? More over they can sing well and sing in Tamil properly as well. Do Malayalees listen to Tamil songs ? Just about every Tamil singing competition always has several Malayalees. Why you so good at singing ?
Actually, I find Tamil a lot similar to Malayalam. And even if not completely but at least partially all malayalis can understand Tamil. But surprisingly most Tamils don't understand Malayalam. Which I have always found a little confusing. As far as tamil songs are concerned, malayalis just completely love Tamil songs especially all those melodious Ilaiyaraja, MSV, Rahman songs

I find it too bit amusing too. It is not that we don't understand them at all, i can understand 35% to 40% of the conversation. Telugu, Kannada totally different.

They play those at weddings here as well. Yuvan is actually in town this week, there are several singers like Karthik and etc are here as well. Yuvan isn't bringing his crew, i think he is just singing several songs, scouting to see how the crowd is before he does a show here. We have SPB, Krish, Mano, Vijay Yesudas, and etc come here and do show every summer, some of them come twice every summer. Sivakarthikeyen came before that super singer season that gave him a big break into films and he was really funny. Ilayarajah was here last year, Vijay Tv covered it. 40,000 tickets were sold out and the temperature outside that day was -30 Celsius. I'm sure Ilayarajah went home with at least several crores hands down but then again this was the first time he was here. Ar Rahman comes every few years and he attracts more Bollywood fans than Tamil fans but he still sings 50-50 in both languages. Even youths around my age who don't really know Ilayarajah listen to his songs. His music of late hasn't been great but he is still the king.

LOL that is a great way to propaganda, blast MGR songs in all kinds of bus. How much does a ticket to travel on those buses compared to the normal ones ?

Isn't it also having Udit Narayan singing along him. Must have been one of his earliest songs (may be even his first) in Tamil

I think Telugu and Kannada kinda similar to each other just like Tamil and Malayalam are. I don't know correctly but feel so. Both Kannada & Telugu got some Marathi words in their language. BTW, I have read that Malayalam have some words which are common to Tamil spoken in Srilanka but its not in use in TN Tamil. Also, read that Srilankan Tamil cuisine have more common ingredients and flavours to Kerala cuisine than to TN cuisine. I think it was DBS Jeyaraj article. Isn't he in Canada. Have you ever met him?

I thought Kannada and Telugu were much more closer than Tamil and Malayalam were. See what happened was, the Tamil kingdom fell apart, TN was invaded so Northern SL and TN became disconnected. TN was being influenced while the Kerala region and Northern part of SL region stood for longer hence some of the food, accent stayed. We eat Puttu, so do the Malayalees but majority of the people in TN don't but in some places they actually do. Malayalee accent and SL tamil accent might sound a bit alike to some people. LOL i never even knew he was until i googled him. We have like 400,000 tamil speaking population in Canada, about 300,000 live in and around Toronto so even if i run into him i probably will never recognize him.

Yup, Kannada and Telugu must be much closer. As I said I m not clear about it. Their scripts both resemble very much and also they sound very much alike.
In Kerala most food items and cuisines are incomplete without coconut. Similarly I think Jaffna food too is very much coconut based

For me Telugu and Kannada script looks the same but i know that Tamil and Malayalam script are totally different. I also heard that Malayalam doesn't have names for certain things like "police station". What is your native language ? I think it is like that in TN too im not too sure, TN is big so it varies from place to place. Also there are more coconut trees in SL than TN and I also know that Kerala has lots of trees so it could be just an adaptability as well.

Well my native tongue is Malayalam. Bought up in Maharashtra in Northern suburbs of Mumbai so know both Hindi and Marathi. And since I watch a lot of Tamil movies, songs and channels like Vijay TV a lot, so very much comfortable with Tamil.

I don't know if there is no word for Police Station in Malayalam. It may be true as I too have come across a lot of english words in malayalam which apparently don't have synonym in malayalam. But there are also some words in malayalam which so are big and so tongue twister that malayalees themselves prefer to use its English name. For example, there is a malayalam word for super fast transport bus but its so big and so tongue twister than no one uses it other than some some but language fanatic who are a very very rare species. Everyone rather prefer to call them superfast in short

The scripts of Telugu and Kannada are very similar, but the similarity ends there. Very different languages!

Well its around 3 times the non/ac ones and tbh the same buses were first brought in Bangalore and are well maintained but in Chennai they have become shabby and sometimes the air condition isn't switched on either, really terrible state of local transport here probably the worst among major cities of India i have seen.

A nice little melody from the upcoming action thriller #ThaniOruvan, sung by very talented (youtube fame) #KharesmaRavichandran.

Interesting stuff, we are all learning a lot. LOL AC buses charging 3 times the original price lol

Madrasi films tend to have unique plots and there is always something new to watch. Bollywood in comparison is so cliched.

as sandeep said, telugu kannada use similar looking scripts, grammatically both are very different from each other... kannada is more closer to tamil.

Both Kannada & Telugu got some Marathi words in their language.

its quite opposite, marathi has lot of kannada tulu telugu words...

I started to watch 1 Nennokadine because of the rave reviews a couple days ago but had to stop half an hour in. Just looked like a glossier version of OTT Rajnikanth type movies. The bike and car chicken run collison was cringe worthy and the shaky camera gave me a headache.

By Madrasi , hope you meant Tamil .

Kannada and Telugu movies are crap . I have heard Malayalam movies are good , but cant make myself to watch them for some reason

Having studied Kannada and as a fluent speaker i couldn't really understand telugu initially as the words are quite different. However, i can read most stuff in Telugu as the script is very similar. Reading malayalam does not necessarily mean you can read Tamil however as a malayali i can understand a lot of spoken Tamil.

I think Telugu,Kannada and Malayalam are much more Sanskritised than Tamil or any other Indian language for that matter. Not too sure of this.

Hindi,Punjabi not sure about Gujarati and Marwari also sound similar though.Tamil is very different as its older than Sanskrit but it has borrowed certain stuff from Sanskrit as well.

Well im not saying that other Indian languages are not Sanskritised but i was under the impression that Hindi had more Persian/Arabic influence. Ditto for Punjabi. As for the antiquity of Tamil, i believe it dates back to about 300 BC but AFAIK Vedic Sanskrit existed around 1500 BC during the time of the composition of the Rig Veda. So im not sure Tamil is older than sanskrit but it is the oldest language being spoken in India today.

Reviews of Some South Indian movies I have watched recently.

Telugu:

Bhale Bhale Magadivoy starring Nani and Lavanya Tripathi: Extremely hilarious. Clean fun. Dialogues may not translate well when subtitled... Telugu/Tamil people may enjoy it more. 8/10

Also watched some Blah movies like Ra Ra krishnayya starring Regina and sandeep kishan..time pass !

Malayalam:
Premam starring Navin Pauly: One of the best love stories I have seen in recent times . Must watch. 10/10

Tamil:

Maari starring Dhanush and Kajal: Quite fun...not very good. 6/10

Vaalu starring Simbu and Hansika : Masala ...time pass when bored: 5/10

Arima Nambi starring Vikram prabhu and Priya anand : Very nice Action thriller ...

Ok Kanmani starring Dalqeer and Nithya Menon : A Modern version of Alaipayuthe by Manirathnam...a fun watch 8/10

Not yet, was busy with work, now back to uni. Might watch it but probably not on theatre though.

heard great things about Thani Oruvan . Aravind Swamy in the trailer looks awesome !!!

will watch it this weekend

has 9.2 on imdb

I highly suggest these Tamil movies if you haven't watched them.

Jigaruthanda (2014)- 9/10 (Not a glittery movie, but it is worth watching)(

Papanasam(2015) - 9/10. It came out early in Malayalam

Jeans (1998) -9/10 Kick ass romantic film, visuals are amazing. Aishwarya rai's early ears before going to Bollywood.

I (2015) - 8.5/10 Cool film, visually good to watch (Vikram[Raavan's villain])

Endhiran (2010) 9.0/10 Very advanced film, Rajnikanth acts as a robot and it isn't bad as it sounds lol.

These two Especially. I would go ahead and believe if somebody told me Tarantino directed the first half of jigarthanda....it was that good.

I would like to add

Myskin's Pisasu --- A horror movie but a bit different

Soodhu Kovvum -- Black comedy

Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom -- A story of a man who forgets one year of his just before his marriage.

Rajathandhiram -- A Smart robbery film.

JaDed - have not watched it yet (been bit busy with my thesis work :D ), but the reviews are very positive for that film.

IgnitedMind - Totally agree with Raajathandiram. A very smart heist movie done very neatly. Unfortunately, the film bombed at the BO. It wasn't a perfect film but I quite enjoyed it, though.

Thani Oruvan 9/10 very well done movie with good script and great acting.
The only problem with the movie was it was commercialized but inspite of that it was very well done.Arvind was amazing.I really like how they ask the audience to think on issues occuring.

Very interesting. Right now Thani oruvan is the highest rated Tamil movie on IMDB. Too bad it will be pulled from theatres here this week, oh well there is always "DVD" ;)

I watched and liked all of them except for Rajathandhiram. My dad liked it and told me to watch it but I forgot. Soodhu Kavvum and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom might not be understood by non Tamil speakers because the comedy dies in the translation(sub title) and that is why I din't list them. I thought Onayum Aatukutti was awesome, Mysskin is an awesome director but lot of people don't understand his movies because the elder generation isn't used to watching intelligent movies.

My South Asian Studies prof will be showing My Name is Khan and Kannathil Mutthamital this year in my uni lol.

After Premam, here comes the real life story of Moideen and Kanchanamala happened in 1960 in Mukkom,Calicut...

Oh, then it is about love che-had.

No religion involved. Just shows how she stood firm for her love after being in house arrest for around 25 years and in the end they still can't unite...movie has some brilliant acting and beautiful cinematography absorbing the beauty of rain and malabar region...

Don't understand why south indian movies show such unrealistic and immature love stories. Guy or girl waiting for years. Why cant they move on and find someone else? This is not love, but immaturity and stubbornness. I have heard of real cases where south indians have not married for years because they did not get that person they coveted. Idiots.

This is a real story of this couple. After his death she decided to end her life but she was brought to Moideen's house by his mother as his widow, even though they never got married. She now runs a charity organisation named B P Moideen Seva Mantir.

What a waste of life because of a silly infatuation.

You are heartless man..:mv

I have a heart, but more importantly I have a brain. Wasting ones life because of love is not worth it. You also have duties towards your parents. Just because you got infatuated with a person you met for a few times, doesnt mean you forget the sacrifices of your parents towards you. This is why all this love story BS should be removed from movies. It created a class of romeos in our country who have no aim but to write raj loves priya on every wall or rock they can find.

Saw 1983..Very well made film with cricket as it's core theme. Good performances by Nivin and rest of the cast.

She could have easily eloped with him but she didn't because of her parents. She waited for their permission for long 25years after all her siblings got married. And when they were about to let her, he died.

Anyway no point in discussing further. You should watch it before commenting. Bye.

I watched Dhammu a few days ago.

I've seen movies where the hero lectures to the terrorists about humanity and love in the climax and the terrorists end up throwing away their AK47s and surrendering to the local police.

Saw Ore Kadal on DD the other day ,Oh man it was such a depressing movie great acting though but i had to watch something funny after it.

LOL..right. Most of the South Indian movies I have seen are quite similar and predictable. Script usually revolves around a typical hero who looks like this -

Ok lets take it one by one.
First all South Indian movies? You defn haven't seen Maalyalam movies then for sure none of their stories are like that.
Second what you are mentioning is basically most telugu movies and even they aren't that often like that now.
Third the last scene you posted is from a movie called Anniyan and in that scene all those guys in white are actually trying to save the girl from the guy in black.

Those are the stereotypical commercial films. Every film industry has a certain formula for commercial success. An analogy to the bollywood would be a hero named Raj/Rahul belonging to a super rich billionaire family sporting six pack abs, coming to home via a helicopter, running to the entrance with his hair flowing in the wind and appearing in a family function or discotheque where 4 to 5 heroes start dancing together with/without the old aged heroes and heroines of yesteryear sporting youthful dresses.

This was the trend of 90s and 2000s.
They still come around but now the trend has changed (in every industry).

You can see a lot of movies based on short films with a low budget coming up. Nowadays people are more ready to experiment with new roles and try different subjects.

When did I say all?? I am only talking about the ones they show in North India ! Sorry bhai.. didn't mean to offend. :(

I see. I'll definitely check out some of the newer ones...it seems times have changed.

Watched "Premam" this evening. A wonderful film with fantastic group of characters portrayed effectively by some very talented actors (Nivin's performance in particular, was simply adipoli). Screenplay was very engaging, thoroughly enjoyed it.
