What's new

South Indian Cinema and Songs

I was about to go this weekend for it,thanks anything else to look forward to esp from Anwar Rasheed's team?

Pavaada and Monsoon Mangoes are the next big releases. Nothing new from Anwar Rasheed's team.

Monsoon mangoes says Kayal cinemas lol.TBH the trailer of both look uninspiring.

Lol yeah. That's the name of the Producer's son.:D

Both movies are specifically targeted for the malayali audiences. Not like Premam, Bangalore days or Charlie.

Yeah i can see that even the cinematography isn't top notch although Monsoon Mangoes' looks somewhat better.

Can anybody suggest some good malayalam movies ? I am discovering movies malayalam movies since Bangalore days !

I have watched Premam, Memories, Mumbai Police, Ohm Shanti Oshana, Neram,How old are you?, Oru Vadakkan Selfie, Ustad Hotel, 1983. Absolutely Loved most of them. Please suggest some good movies since 2010.

I know the South has many good actors, but i have a question:

Why are so many South Cinemas full of people doing exageratted expressions, cheesy dialogues/dancing, wobbling heads while smiling, and overall seems cheesier and weirder than mainstream Bollywood movies. Even the latter get very cheesy, but Tamil stuff just feels cheesier

There are good movies that they don't do that garbage. The movies you are talking about were directed by 50 year old directors, the new ones know how to make good films. Some times you don't even know if it is Tamil or Telugu but generally Tamils think Telugu films are over exaggerated wonder what they think of Tamil movies. If bollywood was seen as the best thing, then SRK movies would have done well in places like TN but it never does well as he wants it to be. He is there promoting his stuff all the time, making Chennai Express, acts in RA-One as a Tamil guy but people don't watch his movies much as he wants them to be. Because there are movies that are far better than Bollywood movies. Even crappy movies might end up having better songs and music which may balance out the movie. It is not all what you see.

I have gotten over it, and found a better girl. Anyway, she was too dominating and good for nothing.

Didn't you spend like your new year with 3 drunken girls ? I think your might characteristic might only attract dominating girls, unless you get an arranged marriage. How old are you ?

One of the best songs ever from my early childhood memories. Movie is Seeta Koka Chiluka. Its a Telugu song.

Music by Ilayaraja is out of this world.

Ennu ninte moideen, Cocktail, 22 female kottayam ( not North 24 kaatham), Drishyam, Amen and Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna bhoomi. Last 2 i have not seen but the trailer looks good.

For Nivin Pauly movies- Thattathin marayathu and Ivide

Ivide is more like a Prithviraj movie anda below average in ratings. Prithvi as Varun Blake looks cool.

Yet another amazing album from Santhosh Narayanan, this time for Madhavan's comeback vehicle "Irudhi Suttru". So far, both the film and the album is getting rave reviews (especially on the performance of Ritika Singh ) from class/mass audience.

Love this song. Can't believe it is a 17 year old girl's voice. She has a similar voice to the likes of vaikom vijayalakshmi and Priyadarshini has a similar voice.

Have you listened to Vayambatti and Endha Vazhi from Idam Porul Yaeval ?

When I first listened this song, I thought it was sung by Vaikom Vijayalakshmi then only saw the artist name as Dhee (Santhosh's Step daughter).

Yep, have listened to Idam, Poryl, Yeval. IMHO, it was one of the better efforts from Yuvan in the recent times.

I thought the same lol. I thought Yuvan was getting better after this album but since then he has only composed Mass. Not sure what is happening. I'd like to see him use classical instruments, but don't think he is ever going to do that.

WTH, I thought it was a middle aged lady singing that song!!

Its a very good movie i saw the tamil version except the climax its very well done with great background score as well.IMO suits more the tamil audience than it would the Northern side.

Just now came across this group while surfing youtube. Looks like they've done a lot of medley renditions of original tamil, malayalam and hindi songs. Malayalee singers just take the originals to a whole new level.

I found this one absolutely enthralling. Did great justice to the original.

Anyone heard this song ? It was sung by a British Tamil artist named Princeten. Used to be played very often in radio back in 2006-2007.

Fastly trending peppy viral song from Tamil-Malayalam Bilingual film called "Neram" (Time). (Lyrics for this song is taken from Malayalam Veteran comedy actor Jagathy's gibbersih song of 1983 Comedy classic "Kinaram") :)

We don't have an ipl team still we are very much part of it.:D

Only Kabali to look forward to in Tamil Cinema, good movies have become so less that I'm looking forward to Telugu and Malayalam movies.

He seems to have aged well

Yup ,I guess staying away from limelight all those years and bad habits helped him.He looked great last year in a tamil film where he was a negative character,he nailed the role.

Does anyone know when is Bahubali 2 coming? :D

By the way was that film made in Tamil or Telugu originally?

I have met him once in Mumbai. He had come to my office for some function. He was damn good looking then and he actually looks better now slimmer. he and Ajit are my favourite tamil actors.

Oh lucky you,Ajith looks great too esp in salt and pepper look but he is actually Malayalee-Sindhi heritage than Tamil as such.
Aarya is another Malalayee actor working in Tamil cinema but as an actor he isn't that great looks good though.

Just Addicted to this song the more I hear it.

AR Rahman weaving his magic once again!

Among all the 4 Southern industries, I would rate Tamil as the best. Malayalam also produces quality movies but I rate Tamil higher as we can find movies of all sort of genres in Tamil.
Telugu industry has some catching up to do and I am glad that slowly we( I am a Telugu guy) are catching up.
Since last 1 yr, slowly these low budget genre movies are increasing and there is decent success rate. Also, top heroes have realized that audience are rejecting just typical masala movies.

Another brilliant Telugu movie in last few months was 'Oopiri'. It's official remake of 'Intouchables'. I have never seen a remake adapted so well into local version. Movie was absolutely brilliant, I would suggest to have a look at it if you haven't watched Intouchables yet -

This was filmed as a billingual. In Tamil, its 'Thozha'. I heard even Tamil version is also equally good.

Anna namastey. Anta cinema ledu :))

I don't think neither the Telugu actors nor the Telugu audience (the general public) really care for good movies. All they want is their hero to come and conquer. They just need their heroes' elevation. Even the stories have become predictable and it's all formulaic.. Tamil films have left Telugu films light years behind. Even the current directors from Telugu only look for stories that can bring collections. Nobody encourages guys like Chandrasekhar Yeleti or Krish. Sad state of Telugu cinema!

Saw the Malayalam Movie "Jacobinte Swargarajyam"(Translation: Jacob's kingdom of heaven)http://indianexpress.com/article/entertainment/movie-review/jacobinte-swargarajyam-movie-review-ratings-three-and-half-stars/

Its a true story about a Malayalee businessman and his family, based in Dubai surviving the 2008 financial crisis.
Very well directed with a good performance from the whole cast including the dependable Nivin Pauly.

I like the renewed focus of malayalam cinema on more realistic & true to life stories. This movie is a good watch. No overblown melodrama or song & dances that stick out like sore thumbs.

His craze has decreased greatly. All his fans have become responsible middle aged family men now:narine and the younger generation look more up to Vijay and Ajith.

He should just take a honorary retirement now.

What nonsense!!!!! Vijay and Ajith that itself says a lot-there was never a competition for Superstar in 90's! :livid:

Of course bro. Even though Kamal acted in much difficult roles, the craze of Rajini was something else, especially in the 90s in films like Baasha. Even the name in the opening credits of his films with the famous blue dotted lines would make the fans go berserk:asif

I was talking about the present. Lingaa didn't gather much revenue and he should take the cue. Just like the youger generation (teenagers) connect more with Kohli than Sachin, the present youngsters celebrate Ajith and Vijay films more nowadays. He should respectfully pass on the baton amd retire:narine

Thalaiva!!

Reading comments in the comment section hurts my brain. These people of TN will never change. That being said, for some weird reason I had no hope till 0:57. I know that the director is very good, liked Attakathi and Madras, they had very good screenplay. I hope there is no too much dishyum, dishyum.

Dude I'm a big fan of him,any kid who grew up in 90's in Chennai is his fan, however he might look in real life but imo the screen suits him a lot, many guys might look better but its about screen adaptability and Rajnikanth is probably first with Shivaji distant second. :srini

Talking about Shivaji reminds me of one thing. While I was studying in the hostel, my friends had a random debate about who was the better actor - Shivaji or Kamal. It went for hours and hours, and finally we all agreed that Dhanush was the winner.

Im talking about the behaviour the celebirty worshipping culture. My first movie of him was Arunachalam, I still have "Singam ondru" song on my phone, good motivational song. I was more of a Prabhu Deva, Prashanth fan. My dad took me to few Vijaykanth' movies, he was the number 3 actor, then. They were very good movies for that time. Vijaykanth had that authority, bad *** leader presence as well. Now he is just a comedy piece.

Vetri Nichayam is a better song.

That's true people take it to another level, there have been lot of posts showing the stupidity of Vijay,Rajni,Ajith fans.

From the director of "Cuckoo" comes what looks like a simple political satire "Joker" with supremely talented Guru somasundaram (of Jigarthanda and Aaranya Kaandam fame) as the lead. Liked the trailer, hope it succeeds at the box office.

Samuthirakani's "Appa", looks interesting (has a vibe of "Saattai" which I felt was a bit too preachy and had OTT acting from Thambi Ramaiah). Sense it could be better than many "Kuppais" (garbage, in terms of content in offer) that gets released and becomes blockbuster hits in our state, these days.

Samudhrakanni movies are always worth watching. Not a fan of child artist, they ruin the movies with poor acting.

How do you like the released song JaDed Thivagar?

Been blasting it in my friends car in the last couple of days. Highly testosterone fueling song :akhtar. Sadly this is the only good song from this movie. Did you listen to Onnu Rendu from Iraivi ?

Video Teaser of Nerappu da

There is absolutely nobody with better charishma than THE RAJNI

Movies that I have seen I thought Were decent or good

Puthiya Niyamam(malayalam) Starring Nayanathara and Mamotty -- Thought it was a decent thriller. Both the leads were strong an pulled the movie along. 7/10

Action Hero Biju(malayalam) -- Nivin Pauly does not dissapoint -- 7/10

Theri(tamil) -- Vintage Vijay Mass. A template masala movie of a masala hero...yet entertaining. Purely sticking to the genre 8/10

24 (Tamil)- Overhyped. 5/10 . Surya was good and thats about it.

Charlie (Malayalam) -- Art was incredible. Movie slows down in the second half...but a good sunday afternoon pleasant watch. 6/10

Kadhalum Kadandhu Pogum ( Tamil) -- Cute love story. Was nice to see Vijay sethupathi in some light hearted movie. Enjoyed it....Madonna sebastian was glowing through the movie. 7/10

IgnitedMind - In total Agreement with your views on all those malayalam flicks (absolutely enjoyed both charlie and action hero biju, puthiya niyamam was superb as well). Also agree with the overhyping of ordinary (jmho) 24 (didn't liked it at all, clownish screenplay, characters and dreadful songs from ARR).

Theri, i hated every minute of watching it (a torture that I had endured during equally dreary Vedhalam few months back).

Among these craptastic Tamil flicks, Ka Ka Po came as a breath of fresh air for me. Enjoyed it thoroughly.

Manithan was another film that was very solid (i did not know that it was a remake of Jolly LLB and haven't watched the hindi version) Raja rishi's final act in the court room was spellbinding and such a tearjerker for otherwise routine court drama mashed with few comic moments.

-Missed this in my above post

Watched Sairat (Marathi film) a small budget tragic love story which has done (still doing) phenomenal business in Maharashtra. On the molds of balaji Sakthivel's kaadhal, liked the marathi one for the lead pair and beautiful music (BTW, Music director duo Ajay-Atul has lifted heavenly awesome bgms from Ennio Morricone's Malena).

Watched kannada cult classic (if not already, it will be in the future) "Ulidavaru Kandanthe". Great attempt by Rakshit shetty (also does a major character in the film) albeit gets bit too slow and dragging in parts (especially the first 30 minutes). A good 30 mins could be chopped off from the story to make it more brisk and racy. This is a movie with brilliant music and really wonderful acting by some great kannada actors. Thara (mesmerizing as a lonely mother waiting for her long lost son), Kishore (has underplayed the role of daydreaming romeo, fantastically), Achyuth kumar (a very powerful performance by this guy in the second half of the film) and lastly the kid known as democracy to name but few.

There going to bilingual remake of this in tamil/malayalam with Nivin pauly doing the Rakshit's role. Very eagerly looking forward to this version and hopefully this one will rectify all the mistakes of the original.

Illa machi..I just heard a few lines from the teaser advertisement.

Heard the film was a very serious movie with some very good performances from everyone especially SJ Suryah..

I really don't how u can criticize 24 and like a movie like Theri

24 was a decent effort for a commercial movie and trying something new as (not as good as Netru Indru Nalai ) story like as well instead of the usual crap stories for Mass films .For once even the screen play was good .

Whereas Theri was the same old crappy revenge story .Even the story line Atlee shamelessly copied from Chatrian .

Its one of those things that i like that song and everything about it because it has Rajni in it. i'm a fan and can't wait for Kabali!
