The two-week long schedule of Asia Cup 2022 has panned out such that the paths of Sri Lanka and Pakistan converge with no context riding on their meeting, except that they meet again two days later with the trophy on the line. In what has been a highly-competitive tournament, the chips have fallen in such a way that the final Super Four game serves as a dress rehearsal for the summit clash.

Sri Lanka and Pakistan both started the tournament looking short of quality to go all the way, but have grown in confidence and performance as the tournament has gone on. Pakistan come into this fixture on the back of a morale-pumping win over India and a nervy but eventually ecstasy-inducing victory over Afghanistan. Sri Lanka's path has been one of composure, as they showed wares to chase well under pressure against both Afghanistan and India.

In that sense, Friday's game represents the face-off of in-form sides with very little to separate between the two right now. The absence of context takes nothing away as both sides can use their first meeting against each other this tournament to cast a microscopic eye on the opposition and fine-tune their plans for the final.

When: Sri Lanka vs Pakistan, Super Four Match 6, September 9, 06:00 PM Local time, 07:30 PM IST

Where: Dubai International Cricket Stadium

What to expect: Dubai has served up good batting pitches in Super Four, with teams batting second particularly getting the better conditions to play with.

Head to head: Pakistan 13 - 8 Sri Lanka. The last time the two sides met in Pakistan in 2019, Sri Lanka beat the home team 3-0.

Team Watch:

Pakistan

Injury/Unavailability: The in-form Shadab Khan underwent some attention from the physios while batting in the previous encounter, but the extent of his injury is as yet unknown. If rested or unavailable, it could present an opportunity to Usman Qadir.

Tactics & Matchups: Naseem Shah took all the plaudits for Pakistan's win over Afghanistan but Asif Ali's 8-ball 16 too was crucial in their successful chase. Asif could once again be pivotal to Pakistan against a side that has bowled immaculately at the death in the last two Super Four games - 37 for 5 against Afghanistan and 46 for 4 against India.

Probable XI: Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Mohammad Nawaz, Asif Ali, Khushdil Shah, Haris Rauf, Naseem Shah, Mohammad Hasnain

Sri Lanka

Injury/Unavailability: None since their last outing.

Tactics & Matchups: In 2019, Sri Lanka's triumphs over Pakistan came courtesy Wanindu Hasaranga (2/20, 3/38 and 3/21). He has had an ordinary Asia Cup so far but against a right-hander dominated top-order who he matches-up well against, it could be redemption time. Among the batters, Sri Lanka's middle-order core - three left-handers - match-up favourably against both Shadab Khan (leg spinner) and Mohammad Nawaz (left-arm spinner).

Probable XI: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis, Charith Asalanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka

Did You Know:

- Since January 2022, Dasun Shanaka has 396 runs in 15 T20I innings at a strike rate of 145.05 and an average of 39.60

- Since the 2021 T20 World Cup, Shadab Khan has picked 22 wickets in 15 T20Is and has an economy rate of 5.90 in this period

Squads:

Sri Lanka Squad: Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis(w), Charith Asalanka, Danushka Gunathilaka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Dasun Shanaka(c), Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Maheesh Theekshana, Asitha Fernando, Dilshan Madushanka, Dinesh Chandimal, Dhananjaya de Silva, Jeffrey Vandersay, Ashen Bandara, Praveen Jayawickrama, Nuwanidu Fernando, Pramod Madushan, Nuwan Thushara, Matheesha Pathirana

Pakistan Squad: Mohammad Rizwan(w), Babar Azam(c), Fakhar Zaman, Iftikhar Ahmed, Khushdil Shah, Asif Ali, Mohammad Nawaz, Shadab Khan, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah, Usman Qadir, Hasan Ali, Haider Ali, Shahnawaz Dahani

Pakistan should rest Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam for this one.
Fakhar should be dropped, but Babar needs to score runs. None the less, don't Carr abt Asia cup anymore, knocked India and Afg out, it's all good now. Winning cup be icing on the cake not the cake itself.

How important will be toss today?

You have to give credit to Pakistan for winning matches even when Babar has failed. The more we don't merely depend on individuals the better for the team.

Asia Cup 2022 | Sri Lanka vs Pakistan | Match 6 | Super 4 | Dubai | 9 Sep | Match Discussion

Lack of professionalism, killer instinct, and consistency have been one of the issues with Pakistan cricket since decades now. Therefore, knowing this team, Pakistan are due a bad game soon. However, we hope that it´s not the Final on Sunday. Of course, the most ideal thing would be that they go on to win both their remaining matches, but you never know with this team.

Hopefully we play all our benchwarmers.

If babar decides to play a winning squad than i swear, this team would be acting ridiculous.

Its a deadrubber and play the bench warmers now.

Quite fitting that Pakistan and Sri Lanka will contest the final. Two countries that've always been very close, and both experiencing severe hardship currently.

This is a dead rubber so Pakistan should rest some tired legs. The weather has been blazing hot and will have taken its toll on the players. Would like to see Haider and Dhani in if he's fit.

Tactics wise I'd like to see us go harder in the PP. We cannot keep being content with 40-0 or 40-1 after 6 overs. In Australia the wickets will be truer and so scores should be higher.

Babar, Fakhar need some runs.

Haider should also come in place of Ifti probably.

Rest Shadab and Naseem and bring in Hasan and Qadir.

Could've rested Rizwan too but no reserve WK in squad.

As far as i know, Babar will play the same combo ....may be..just may be, if Rizwan needs a rest they will bring in Haider as an opener (that would be exciting) . Khushdil can keep too...

i seriously hope Fakhar is dropped and dropped for good

Haider at no3.... and let him play a natural but calm game....

Shadab should be given rest with Naseem and (unfortunatly) get hassan in and Usman qadir in

Rest Rizwan, Shadab and perhaps Naseem.

Not sure what the status is of Dahani right now if he has fully recovered or is still injured.

Since batting is looking suspect, I expect same batting and order otherwise a new player coming and playing well can unset the entire momentum

I would like to them bat first and defend the total.

Obviously iftikhar chacha has to make way for Haider and khushdil should be dropped as well.

That would be valid if the final were against a different opponent.

This is a golden opportunity to rehearsal a new batting lineup.

What happens if Babar / Fakhar fail, yet again. Then they will get into final with immense pressure. Especially Fakhar.

At the very least, Pak should change the batting order. Let Fakhar open.

Rizwan is getting burnt out . And I’m sure he is the one who would have insist to play t

Sri Lanka have won the toss and have opted to field

Pakistan think tank makes even sarcasm looks like a Masterstroke what a timid bunch

So no Haider Ali even in this game. Beyond pathetic.
Why pick him then???
Better let him play national T20.

Any update on dahani? If Hasan somehow manages to even slightly better than Hasnain, he will get a backdoor entry for final.

Haider is mediocre. Decent selection gave Naseem a rest and we lost the toss so we can win defending now.

Babar has some issue against Haider it seems

This certainly isn't normal and babar should be questioned about it. Everyone gets a chance barring Haider, who perhaps threatens the ones sitting comfortable in the team.

Surprised to see Hassan in playing 11 and not Haider.

Hassan was dropped and Haider was picked on merit. Ideally Haider deserves a spot in playing 11 before any dropped player.

Babar is so damn conservative. Haider should've been given a go.

And as if Khusdil and ifti are doing wonders. Even Fakhar is struggling rn. Seriously he couldn't find a place for Haider even in this game?

Good that Sri Lanka have put Pakistan into bat.I would have liked to see Haider Ali in the team instead of Khushdil.

Well let's see what our mediocre middle order can do when there is no scoreboard pressure... Still expect the likes of Khusdil to eat up balls and Asif Ali hitting a couple and then getting out...

Usman being friends with captain gets a match while haider and shahnawaz sit out

PAK looking more proactive in that first over, possibly realising batting first in Dubai they need an above par score.

Hopefully that boundary gives Babar confidence.

Disappointing to see Haider Ali not being played.

Fakhar certainly can't complain about being given more than enough chances though. Fakhar has pretty poor numbers in UAE though in 15 innings 19.21 AVG & 111.61 SR.

Worth noting, his numbers in Dubai ground aren't as poor though. 25 AVG & 125,8 SR which are close to his career number. He's really struggled on the slow Abu Dhabi & Sharjah pitches. Might be understandable backing him since match is due to be held in Dubai.

Correct... Should always bat like you chasing 190...

Before Asia Cup i was so confident that babar would score a lot of runs and he would look invincible but now it looks like he will get out anytime.

5 dot balls in a row played by Babar... Shows he is off colour...

The thing is that we don't have repalcmentts for all 3...Shaan of course and maybe Haider deserves a chance but can't anyone else...

Yeah Shan definitely deserves his chance and Haider is already and he should definitely play ahead of these useless batsmen.

Maybe fakhar can be given an extended run but he has been mostly useless in this format.

make similar mistake like 2021 World Cup playing a serial out of form players without trying anyone

Not a problem. I'm glad the team is winning without Babar's batting

Riz gone... Was looking to score quickly... Let's see what Fakhar can do now

Rizwan's lack of offside game will be start of his downfall. He really is limited with the range of shots he can play.

Key here is not to slow down and eat up balls although we now have two batsmen who are horribly out of form at the crease

Mark my words. Fakhar and Khushdil are the weakest point and they may cost the final
