Injured Angelo Mathews to miss Pakistan Test

Sri Lanka's former skipper Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the first Test against Pakistan next week due to injury, the cricket board said today.

Mathews will miss the match starting September 28 in Abu Dhabi due to a calf strain, the board said.

Two uncapped players have been brought into a 15-member squad, wicket-keeper batsman Sadeera Samarawickrama, 22, and 28-year-old batsman Roshen Silva.

Sri Lanka will play two Tests, five one-day internationals and three Twenty20 matches against Pakistan.

Sri Lanka squad: Dinesh Chandimal (captain), Lahiru Thirimanna (vice captain), Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Roshen Silva, Niroshan Dickwella, Rangana Herath, Lakshan Sandakan, Dilruwan Perera, Suranga Lakmal, Nuwan Pradeep, Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Gamage.

Roshen Silva finally called up. He has a strong FC record.

Bowling doesn't seem too threatening bar the ageing Herath.

Huge blow as Mathews ruled out of series

Sri Lanka’s preparation for the bilateral series against Pakistan suffered a massive blow yesterday as former captain Angelo Mathews was ruled out of the Test series that gets underway later this month.

Mathews hurt his calf during training and was diagnosed with a grade-one tear.

Although Mathews could be fit by the second Test in Dubai, where Sri Lanka’s first-ever day-night Test will be played, the selectors are not taking any chances with a heavy season ahead.

A source told ‘The Island’ that Mathews will now work towards gaining full fitness ahead of the ODI series.

Immediately after the Pakistan tour, Sri Lanka will travel to India for a six-week long tour followed by a series in Bangladesh.

Mathews has been plagued by calf, hamstring and ankle injuries the whole of this year and missed a significant part of the games.

The 30-year-old tore his calf muscle during the home series against Australia and missed last year’s tour to Zimbabwe.

He captained the side in South Africa but returned home prior to the ODI series with a hamstring injury.

He went onto miss the Test and ODI series against Bangladesh, but was expected to feature in the T-20 series, but the calf injury resurfaced.

He missed the first game of the Champions Trophy against South Africa, but played the rest of the competition. Mathews featured in the ODI series against Zimbabwe and stepped down from captaincy after a humiliating series defeat.

He started bowling during the ODI series against India and the latest set back will leave Sri Lanka thin on experience.

Sri Lanka leave for UAE on Sunday and will play the first Test on Thursday in Abu Dhabi.

Sri Lanka also miss the services of all-rounder Asela Gunaratne and wicketkeeper batsman Kusal Janith Perera due to injuries. Their availability for the ODI leg of the tour will be known later next week.

Sri Lanka have had a tough 2017 and just managed to gain automatic qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 after West Indies lost the first ODI against England at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Yeah, play the guy with a 38 bowling average in FC. How did this hack even get selected over Hafeez? Despite all his flaws, at least Hafeez can still be good.

Pak team should win both tests by an innings because this team is even weaker than the team which India faced.

Look out for akila dhananjaya. That kid can surprise many batsmen
