COLOMBO: Sri Lanka sports minister Dayasiri Jayasekera said he is willing to order a probe on the 2011 World Cup final between India and Sri Lanka following concerns raised by former captain-turned-minister Arjuna Ranatunga.

"Let anyone make a written complain I am ready to order an investigation," Jayasekera told reporters on Wednesday.

Ranatunga, who was present at the Wankhede Stadium as a commentator, had said that Sri Lankan performance on the day was questionable and it must be investigated.

Jayasekera's response came after comments made by his predecessor Mahindananda Aluthgamage who was also present at the match where Sri Lanka surrendered to India after posting an impressive 274.

Aluthgamage told a local TV yesterday that the managers report had claimed that a senior Sri Lankan player had smoked as many as over 50 cigarettes in the dressing room during the game and the then captain offered to resign immediately after the game without any reason to do so.

He said there were many such suspicious incidents concerning the game which he told the then cricket management committee to probe.

The controversy over the 2011 final raged after Sri Lanka's first ever loss to Zimbabwe in the ODIs.
In an apparent bit to hit back at Ranatunga, Kumar Sangakkara, who was captain in the final, called for a probe on the decision made to tour Pakistan in 2009 despite serious player safety concerns.

The Sri Lankan team bus was attacked by gunmen in Lahore injuring several players which eventually led to all international team deciding not to tour Pakistan.

Ranatunga was the local cricket boss at the time.

Sri Lanka to probe 2011 World Cup's controversial defeat against India

Sri Lanka's sports minister gave his support Wednesday for an investigation into the country's controversial 2011 World Cup loss against India, amid fresh allegations of match fixing.

The South Asian nation lost the World Cup final by six wickets at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, stunning the cricket-mad island. Then Sri Lanka skipper Kumar Sangakkara resigned soon after the match.

Pressure has since been mounting for an inquiry into the shock defeat, with a former cricket captain and a previous sports minister going public with their suspicions that Sri Lanka deliberately lost the match.

“The allegations merit an investigation,” Dayasiri Jayasekera told reporters in Colombo.

“As soon as I get a written complaint, I will start a probe.” Sri Lanka, batting first, scored 274-6 off 50 overs and appeared in a commanding position when Indian superstar Sachin Tendulkar was caught for 18.

India turned the game dramatically thanks partly to poor fielding and bowling by Sri Lanka.

The sports minister at the time Mahindananda Aluthgamage has raised fresh concerns, telling local media there were “several disturbing factors about that game”.

Four last-minute changes were made to the Sri Lankan side without prior approval being sought from the sports minister, breaching convention.

“Then there are also questions about the behaviour of a very senior player. During the match, instructions sent to the field were ignored,” Aluthgamage said, without naming the player in question.

The former minister said he launched an inquiry after the match, but the investigation was scuttled.

His concerns followed quick on the heels of comments from former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga, who last Friday demanded an inquiry be held to expose the “dirt” on dodgy cricketers.

Last year, the International Cricket Council imposed a three-year ban on a top Sri Lankan official Jayananda Warnaweera for failing to cooperate with an anti-corruption investigation.

Sri Lankan players and umpires have been accused of match fixing in the past, but Warnaweera was the first high ranking official to be found guilty and penalised.

Betting is illegal in most of the cricket-mad Indian subcontinent, but backstreet bookmakers — many with underworld links — still flourish.

Although no big-name Sri Lankan player has ever been convicted of corruption, several former stars have made allegations of match fixing or spot-fixing -- when players deliberately bowl or field badly to give away a set number of runs.

SA losing to england, england tying with india, ponting's curiously slow 100, tendulkar getting dropped 4 times by pak, gould's LBW decision reversal, A World cup final toss being conducted twice, SL bringing in 4 changes ..

nothing fishy about that WC in india at all :thumbsup

In sports, you also need a little bit of luck. I believe if luck is on one side, the other team is cursed no matter what. Semi-Final match at Mohali was a bit of luck, the final was you could say luck with Mathews, Mendis and Herath all sitting. Champions trophy was also bit of luck for Pakistan. Who can forget them 1999 Semi-Final between Australia and South Africa ? No need to waste time into these probes.

Many rumours were flying around at the time that the Mohali semi final was thrown by the Pakistan team at the instruction of the Pakistani govt, in exchange for deals with the Indian govt.

The Congress govt needed India to win the world cup in order to uplift the public mood in India, hence they paid off the Sri Lankans to let India win the final.

I remember reading posts on facebook at the time regarding this.

Good initiation by Sri Lanka board. We need to do the same thing 1996 BD match, Semi at Mohali semi, Sydney test made famous Kamran, also vs India World Cup match where we drop 5 catches of Tendulqar at least

How about investigating Cardiff one month later. That's where the bones are buried!

The sports minister has to approve any team changes during a World Cup ?

Why do you say that?

If teams are being paid off to throw away world cup matches then that is a huge travesty. Investigations should take place to ensure such things are not happening.

I say it because,in my opinion,it is a futile exercise and no conclusive evidence will be found. The toss was a bit suspicious (it was called twice IIRC) but the rest of the game was completely normal.

Anyway,Ranatunga just said this out of spite against Sanga, whom he has criticised a lot for stupid reasons. The sports minister has just jumped in.

You could say the Mohali SF of that WC was very suspicious with several decisions going against Pak and Tendulkar riding his luck after being dropped 4 times.

A good Ind team playing at home in front of passionate fans against a decent SL team does not need fixing to win.

Anyone who bothered watching the whole 2010-2011 cricket season would know that India won fair and square.

I remember back then, India were bashing everyone at home. They had a huge home advantage. Tendulkar getting his double hundred and what not.
Anyone who thinks other wise is just an utter fool.

Also, if you guys believe Pakistan threw the game away, plzz do bother watching replays of the Pakistan Vs New Zealand series. That series itself is a clue of what happened in the semi final.

By the logic advanced here, all cricket matches where one's supported team loses must be fixed. So my suggestion is, let us stop playing cricket tournaments henceforth. No more world cups/ champions trophy etc.

These match fixing allegations are becoming ridiculous. Surely not every match can be fixed just because a former player suspects it. If the situation is that bad then just ban the game altogether.

Ah Facebook, the best place to get your news.

This is pathetic, most cricket fans nowadays call every big game a fix. Match fixing is a super hard task where a bookmaker has to take time to script the match ball by ball and pay every player of the lineup to make the fix successful and if one person declines, the fix is off. If you look at match fixing as something not that hard, you must be confused with spot fixing which dosent affect game at all and can even be done in gully cricket

There's gotta be some truth in this, it's a shame. India's second world title is now in doubt, and even if it turn out to be false, there will always be suspicion.

The political influence in the semi final at Mohali does raise questions as to whether these games were played fair and square, and whether politicians were influencing results. Players may have been forced against their will.

This is embarrassing. What exactly is he supposed to find, and how? No-one will turn around and say "Hey, by the way I know what happened..."

This is a political move and nothing else.

Lets probe the 2009 T20 WC final then. Suspiciously SL played poorly compared to rest of the matches. How about this CT ? SL dropped 4-5 catches suspiciously in the QF, all easy catches it seems. In final, Jadeja's run out, Dhoni's atrocious dismissal straight to the fielder especially at very early, Bumrah's no ball and I wonder why Raina was dropped from BCCI contract all of a sudden and is being shunned by BCCI? Wasn't he spotted with a bookie in Lanka few years ago ? :13: So it seems like Pakistan's CT win and their T20 WC victory were also undeserving rewarded. How shame.

That's a shame if what you're saying is true.

Yes all such victories should be probed. According to one bookie who appeared on Mubashar Luqman's show clearly pointed out that all main matches across all sports are fixed.
