Sri Lanka tour of Bangladesh (Jan-Feb 2018): 7 match ODI tri-series (Bang/SL/Zim), 2 T20Is & 2 Tests

Bangladesh have announced the ODI squad for the first two matches of the tri-series against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. They have made five changes to their squad which includes the inclusion of Mustafizur Rahman while Taskin Ahmed and Soumya Sarkar, who were a part of the ODI unit in South Africa, have been dropped.

Liton Das, Mominul Haque and Shafiul Islam have been dropped while Anamul Haque, wicketkeeper Mohammad Mithun, Abul Hasan and Sunzamul Islam make the cut.

Nasir Hossian made it to the squad and so did Sabbir Rahman despite the disciplinary issues that earned him a ban.

Soumya's poor form cost him. He has scored at 24.30 in the last 12 months and the inconsistency was the main reason that led to him getting dropped.

Chief selector Minhazul Abedin said: There is no question regarding his talent, but since he has been struggling with consistency, we decided to give him a break. I hope he will return to form and return to consistency.

The tournament starts on January 15.

Bangladesh Squad: Tamim Iqbal, Mashrafe Mortaza (c), Shakib Al Hasan, Imrul Kayes, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mehedi Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Anamul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Nasir Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Mohammad Mithun, Rubel Hossain, Abul Hasan, Mohammad Saifufddin, Sunzamul Islam.

Zimbawe has chance with Brendan Taylor back into side. They have pretty decent batting order maybe need to improve pace bowling.

Bangladesh can't keep their cool in crucial situations. That may be the losing cause for them.

It will be a very interesting tournament. Bangladesh as a team is not in good form.thats why it should be a close fought tourni.if BD players regains their full touch Srilanka and Zimbabwe will be just blown away.

I can't think of a bigger yawnfest.

Maybe if you add the West Indies in and make in a quadrangular series.

Looking forward to this series

Will be a close competition, Zimbabwe looking better with Brandon and Jarvis.

Lots of people saying this is a minnow series etc but am actually looking forward to it. Sri Lanka Bangladesh are evenly matched and games in Bangladesh are pretty good as lots of fans turn up to games there. Also Zimbabwe beat SL in SL recently and with Taylor + Jarvis back are capable of pulling off an upset.

Zimbabwe have included the uncapped duo of Brandon Mavuta and Ryan Murray in their squad for the triangular series in Bangladesh, involving the hosts and Sri Lanka. Apart from the two former Zimbabwe Under-19 stars, Blessing Muzarabani – who made his Test debut for Zimbabwe against South Africa on Boxing Day – is also in line to get his first one-day international cap after he was included in the 15-man squad. Captain Graeme Cremer and his side, which will be banking on the experience of Hamilton Masakadza, Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza, Craig Ervine, Christopher Mpofu and Kyle Jarvis, are scheduled to leave for Bangladesh on Tuesday.

The tour will be a critical test for Zimbabwe as they step up their preparations for the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2018 event which they will host in March. In the tri-series, Zimbabwe will play Bangladesh in the first match on 15 January, before Heath Streak’s charges face Sri Lanka two days later. After taking on Sri Lanka again on 21 January, Zimbabwe will have a day’s rest before entertaining Bangladesh for the second time. The final is scheduled for 27 January.

All matches will be day-night games and will be played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.

ZIMBABWE SQUAD FOR BANGLADESH TRI-SERIES 2018: Hamilton Masakadza, Solomon Mire, Craig Ervine, Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza, Peter Moor, Malcolm Waller, Graeme Cremer, Ryan Murray, Tendai Chisoro, Brandon Mavuta, Blessing Muzarabani, Christopher Mpofu, Tendai Chatara, Kyle Jarvis

Chris Mpofu is undroppable despite being the epitome of mediocrity. He'll be playing for Zimbabwe in 2052.

Given Zimbabwe beat Sri Lanka in their own backyard they have a real chance of reaching the final, especially with Taylor and Jarvis back. Their batting won't be exposed as much on slow, low surfaces as that's what they're accustomed to back home.

As for Sri Lanka - this is Haturu's first test. Interested to see how he changes the side.

Bangladesh however will go in as favourites, they need to get the South Africa debacle out of their system.

Sri Lanka, on Tuesday, announced Angelo Mathews would return as skipper for limited-overs cricket ahead of the 2019 World Cup, just six months after the all-rounder stepped down from the post.

The move comes as a surprise after Mathews, 30, quit last July as captain in all three formats of the game following repeated bouts of injury. Sri Lanka Cricket president Thilanga Sumathipala said the board asked Mathews to reconsider following close consultations with new coach Chandika Hathurusingha and team selectors.

Mathews said he took a few days to decide before accepting the captaincy of Sri Lanka’s one-day and Twenty20 teams. “It is a national duty, and we need stability moving into a World Cup in 18 months,” said Mathews.

Dinesh Chandimal remains Sri Lanka’s Test captain. Sumathipala said Mathews was expected to prepare the squad ahead of the World Cup in England and Wales in 2019. The returning captain will face his first test this month when Sri Lanka travel to Bangladesh for a tri-nation One-day International tournament.

The allrounder bore the brunt of criticism after Sri Lanka’s embarrassing loss to lowly-ranked Zimbabwe in a home Test series last year. Mathews at the time described the shock defeat to the visitors as the lowest point in his career and a “hard pill to swallow”.

Zim vs BCB XI practice match has been abandoned due to delayed air schedule of zim team to Bangladesh.
There is no practice match for SL as they just ended a tour in Ind.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been ruled out of the first Test against Sri Lanka starting on 31 January after suffering an injury to his left little finger during the final of the Rocket Tri-Nation Series against Sri Lanka today (Saturday) at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. Shakib, the Bangladesh Test captain, hurt the base of the fifth finger while fielding.

BCB’s senior physician Dr Debashis Chowdhury said the x-ray report had come clear but the injury required stitches: “The x-ray did not find any fracture. However, there is subluxation/joint sprain at the base of the little finger on his left hand. He has been assessed by a cosmetic surgeon and necessary repairs have been done. The affected finger will have to be immobilized for at least a week before further assessment is made which means he is out of the first Test in Chittagong.”

Bangladesh call batting reinforcements for second Sri Lanka Test

Bangladesh have included batsman Sabbir Rahman for the second Test against Sri Lanka to strengthen their batting in the absence of injured all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, a team official said Monday.

Shakib will miss the second Test starting Thursday in Dhaka after he failed to recover from a finger injury that kept him out of the opening match.

Sabbir, who played 10 Tests to score 480 runs at an average of 26.66, was ignored for the first game after he failed to live up to expectations in the one-day tri-series last month.

The two-Test series remained locked at 0-0 after the first match ended in a draw in Chittagong on Sunday.

“The wicket of Dhaka is much different than Chittagong. So we thought an extra batsman might be useful. This is why we included Sabbir,” said chief selector Minhajul Abedin.

The home side dropped left-arm spinner Sunzamul Islam and pace bowler Rubel Hossain but retained Abdur Razzak and uncapped off-break bowler Naeem Hasan in the 15-man squad.

Sunzamul claimed just one wicket in the just-concluded Test, giving away 153 runs in his 45 overs in Sri Lanka’s only innings.

Rubel did not play the first Test.

Mahmudullah Riyad will continue as captain in the absence of regular skipper Shakib.

I think our no. 8/9 understands test batting better than Sabbir

to put things into perspective Sabbir became a star at youth level because of his lower order hitting. In the 2010 U-19 WC he was hands down the best lower order bat in the tourney occasionally scoring at 100+ which for youths was exceptional. He was a number 6 btw back then.

He was brought up as a finisher, and he should stay a finisher. Compare that with kohli who grew up as a number 3. Different role. Now sabbir can add a lot of value at 6 but if you ask him to do what kohli does he gonna fail. There is a reason why sabbir failed up the order, because he didnt develop himself to be the premier batsman

Sabbir is more in the mould of Hardik Pandya except he ain't much of a bowler.

He should be playing in LOIs only and low down the order.

Shabbir should be nowhere near the national team. He abused a child as well as threatened the match officials. His presence in the team is toxic. Hence he should be kicked out of the team. But knowing bcb and their submissive attitude I don't think that will ever happen.

Five centuries and six half-centuries were scored in the first Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
The Chittagong Test pitch for the opening match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka has been rated as “below average” by David Boon of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, and, as such, it has received one demerit point according to the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.

The demerit point will remain active for a rolling five-year period and if during this five-year period the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium reaches the threshold of five demerit points, then it will be suspended from staging any international cricket for 12 months.

Mr Boon, whose report has been forwarded to the Bangladesh Cricket Board, said: “The pitch provided no seam movement to the fast bowlers with the new ball and also lacked carry and bounce throughout the match. The pitch did offer occasional slow turn for the spinners early on, but it did not deteriorate as much as would have been expected as the match progressed, resulting in a pitch that too heavily favoured the batsmen across the five days.”

Five centuries and six half-centuries were scored in the match which saw Bangladesh posting 513 and 307 for five, and Sri Lanka amassing a colossal 713 for nine declared in their only innings.

Tell me when was last time u saw a pitch in India where more than 1500 runs were scored with just 24 or so wickets falling..?

http://www.espncricinfo.com/series/...ndia-vs-australia-3rd-test-ind-v-aus-2016-17/

And, 1500 runs were not scored there because the wicket was even slower and Pujara had a big innings (And Aussies saved the game not the way BD batsmen saved it at CTG).

I again say - don't judge the wicket because of the outcome of the Test. What Boon has done here is almost racism and injustice to a weaker board. If this wicket is judged below average for -“The pitch provided no seam movement to the fast bowlers with the new ball and also lacked carry and bounce throughout the match. The pitch did offer occasional slow turn for the spinners early on, but it did not deteriorate as much as would have been expected as the match progressed, resulting in a pitch that too heavily favoured the batsmen across the five days.”- then there should be few other wickets as well - for example the last 2 Tests at MCG & SCG in last IND tour there. And, in opposite direction the J'burg Test or the 1st 2 Test between IND-AUS. For the qualifier of "carry, movement & bounce" Abu Dhabi should have been banned forever by now and these two groundsmen should have been shot in firing squad

Batsman Kusal Janith Perera, who was named in the 15 member squad to take part in the upcoming T20 games against Bangladesh has been ruled out of the two games of the shortest format, following medical advice.

According to medical advice, Perera needs more time to recover from the side strain, which he suffered during the 2nd match Sri Lanka played against Zimbabwe in the concluded ODI Tri-Series in Bangladesh, which the Lankans became the Champions.

Kusal Janith Perera did not leave with the T20 players, who left the country yesterday.

Kusal Mendis will replace Kusal Janith Perera.

Finally, they have picked few kids - Afif, Zakir, Mehdi (this is not Miraz), Arif, 2 Abu's - but for the wrong format. T20 should never be the starting point of a young career.

Won't select any of them except afif as a replacement of shakib(all rounder category)...soumya and sabbir are playing for sure

How good is rahi???

It's not about how good one is - rather it demanded a change, and they have gone for an younger option. If Jahed ends up as another useless cricketer - that's system limitation, we don't have better cricketers.
Idea is that, you try to find alternates within what you have and give younger players time to gain experience - may be some of them should stick....... in National set-up, you can't buy out of your limitation like Pep Guardiola.

Phasing out oldies is a process - not subject to "availability of talunt" - if there is no talent available, BD cricket will go down, but one has to bring new players to phase out grandpas, so that the average age of the team remains similar. Next WC is in 1.5 (T20 2) years time, by which 5/6 players should be ready, otherwise BD team will face something like PAK. And, it's not required either that 5/6 new faces will debut for a wholesale change over - 1/2 in every series is fine, as long as they are changing one failure 23 years old by the next in line instead of bringing back a 35 years old, for his "experience".

One demerit point has been imposed on the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium for the pitch used during the second Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. .

The International Cricket Council has upheld the decision to impose one demerit point on the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium for a “below average” pitch used during the second Test between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka from 8-10 February 2018.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board’s appeal against the sanction was considered by Geoff Allardice, General Manager – Cricket, and Anil Kumble, Chair of the Cricket Committee, who after taking into account the grounds for appeal and other relevant information, came to the conclusion that the rating given by David Boon of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees was correct.

Mr Boon had rated the pitch below average according to the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, citing uneven bounce throughout the match and inconsistent turn.
