The only way to get opposition under pressure in this situation is to be positive, just blocking and leaving and then losing your wicket is of no benefit to yourself or to the team.

It might be a blessing in disguise. Asad is a better batsman and more importantly a match winner. His arrival will be better for Pakistan.
 
Wahab is out only bowler who contributes with runs

Junaid Yasir and even Zulfikar (yes i know the 50) are proper tailenders
 
I don't criticize Azhar for batting slow only because he scores big. He keeps one end quite safe..but Misbah is just a bottler who will throw away his start despite eating away good chunk of overs.

In a test match, it's never all about attacking. One needs to play according to the situation. Sometimes, securing a draw is more important than trying to attack and get into a possible winning position. It's all about the tactics.

I have said it many times that these two have passed their best days and they will only be a burden on the team unless we are playing on really flat roads like the UAE ones. Haris is born in the wrong country.

The bottler averages 49 in tests. I'd take an entire batting line-up of bottlers if it meant they would all average around 50.

Actually, it doesn't work that way. You put 2 tail-ender together, most likely both 'll fail. Key is the set batsman at other end. If one of Azhar, Asad or Sarfraz can stick till No. 11, last 4 wickets can add 70/80. McGrath & McGill were two genuine tail-ender, but several times they added match winning runs with Waugh, Gilly or Martin.

Batting at 4 per over would only result in an additional 20 runs. That's what is being debated. That an additional 40 runs would have made no difference in this situation.

That's wrong thinking. First of all its a two pace pitch, you cannot score freely. Secondly you have to be in the position to attack, @ 30/3 how can you go after bowling?? - This morning session with lot of rain and no sun, day 4, you are asking for trouble if you go reckless.

I think Pakistan is in good enough position to go for the win now. I'd see a draw from here as a loss.
 
67/4, with best 3 batsmen still alive - I think the match is still even. If weather condition remains same, it 'll be difficult to chase anything over 170. There are enough foot marks for the spinners - it 'll be extremely difficult on Day 5.

If you think Pakistan is in a good enough position to secure a win then, I'm sorry, but you have either limited or no knowledge at all of test cricket.

We're leading by 60-odd runs with only 3 batsmen remaining and 5 sessions to go. Anything less than a target of 200-225 would not be easy to defend considering they would have at least an entire day if not more to chase it.

Getting to 200 with Azhar, Shafiq and Sarfraz doesn't seem that unlikely.

It will get tougher for both teams. You need to understand that scoring fast and setting a target of 200 all out and giving Sri Lanka a day and a half to chase it will certainly end in defeat. Whereas, batting slowly and ending up with 200 odd to defend on the last day just changes everything allowing Pakistan to take the upper hand.

I am more appalled at wisdom of suggesting to go after bowling, when you are 30/3, battling morning session, with lots of over night rain and no sun through out the session, not to mention two pace day 4 pitch.

First you need to get into 150+ lead before going crazy. They got out because of not able to handle pacers pressure, poor reflexes. YK was really poor judge of his off stump, he was beaten endlessly.

How they could have gone after bowling?

Thinking about a draw at this situation is out of the question, This morning they were in a perfect position to dictate terms with scores being leveled and still 8 wickets in hand but they were being overly conservative and now Pakistan finds itself in a position where a wicket or two could actually change the entire complexion of the game and can almost guarantee a SL win. Yes sometimes you've to play according to the situation but just staying at the crease without scoring with 2 full days remaining doesn't mean anything and can't take you forward in the match. Right now Shafiq and Sir are our only hopes, if they falter then there is no hope. Match is slightly tilted towards SL at this point in time.

200-225 would be a good target if Sri Lanka were batting on the last day. Not if we give them a day and a half to bat.

Test cricket sometimes involves occupying the crease and making it difficult for the other team to win. This is what Paksitan are doing. Crawling up to a decent total while occupying the crease and allowing the opposition less time to chase the total

Why is thinking about a draw in this situation out of the question? I would gladly take a draw after how we finished out first innings.

This is the third time I'm posing this now. It's easier to chase 200 odd runs when you have a day and a half to do so whereas, it get's hard to chase the same score on just the last day. This is why Pakistan needs to occupy the crease and keep playing slowly inching towards that target of 200-250. Put Sri Lanka into bat on the last day and try to win the game from there.

both when the team were in commanding position because other batsmen were doing a great job..Misbah had no other choice but whenever Misbah has a choice we all know what he opts for.

They were constantly bowling outside the off line in bowling friendly conditions. Were there any freebees they were missing? - There were not many opportunities to score. Pakistan scored 75 runs in last session, with only one wicket down that would have being fine. In next session 120+ is possible. But we have lost extra wicket.

It's not playing for a draw. It's securing your position first and then going for the win. We've won the first match. We already have the upper hand. No need to get uber-aggressive and risk losing the match.

Bat out the day and try to get them all out on the final day.

If we bat out the day, there can only be two results. Either a draw or a win. The game will be in our hands in either case.

Pakistan with one main bowler injured and one lacking the skill to pick up any wicket will have a tough time defending this. That's why I think 250 is minimum we will require to win.

Chasing 200 on the final day with no Wahab to bowl is gonna be a walk in the park for SL batsmen, Yasir won't get 5fer everytime and Junaid is useless, they need to makeup for that by scoring atleast 50-70 more if not 100 but even then I suspect SL chasing this on the final day, They've seen enough of Yasir Shah to lose any more wickets to him.

all the more reason to bat out the day and head towards the 250 slow and steady instead of trying to do too much and get out leaving Sri Lanka to chase 200 odd in a day and a half.

Yeah, I am not sure why people are not getting this. Pakistan needs to bat all day, first session was a tough one, we lost one extra wicket, other than that it was fine. You can makeup in next sessions if you have wickets in hand.

When you have to chase 200+ in last day, its not easy, you loose 2/3 wickets pressure is back on you.

They saw enough of Yasir Shah during the first test as well yet he still got 5 wickets in the first innings. The track will support him and help him make things difficult for the Lankans.

Point is you could either play fast and end up with 225-250 all out with a day and a half to play or you could play it slowly and end up with the same score with only a day to play.

Which situation will be better for Pakistan?

conditions for batting aren't as easier in Sri Lanka as in UAE or BD. It was on the cards that YK and Misbah will fail in this series because they are on their last legs but I expected them to put up a better fight.

Do you think Yk and Misbah are really needed if they can't perform in a little bowling helpful conditions?I don't think we needed them just on the UAE pitches. Even Hafeez becomes Bradman there so what's the difference.

It's really big time to ponder on this. Whether they are required anymore or not.

Agreed. Their time is nearly up, the sooner they leave the better. With the inclusions for Haris and Babar, this team will only get better.

Batting out entire day without actually scoring 3-4 runs an over won't take the game forward. Moreover they're only gonna lose their wickets with this conservative approach, Better make your stay count if you're out there in the middle. The recent success Pakistan had in tests arena is mostly because of aggressive approach and we need to keep doing that if we wanna become a top Test side. The only thing these players should be thinking about is a WIN in this situation and for that to achieve they need to score quickly and get SL to bat later in the afternoon with the lead around 300. Thats what separates a good captain from an average one by being aggressive and contemplating a win at every juncture of the game.
 
he first time Asad and Azhar made their mark was in a similar siutation against England in UAE a few years back. They not only put an excellent partnership but also helped Pak win that match. Expecting the same again.

Your average captain still has one of the best win/loss records in test matches. You, on the other hand, I think have been playing too much EA Sports Cricket and are far removed from the reality of the game. Hence, I suppose, we must agree to disagree.

I dont disagree with that assessment. Against pacers they have passed their sell by date. Taking them to green tour next year is disaster in waiting. But unfortunately they are Gods of test cricket right now, the team rebuilding will start after the phanti on green :facepalm:

They still be good in UAE, because UAE pitches are for senior citizen, ball comes so slow that westerners are bored to death :-) - Hafeez is also a poster child of UAE, where else he can play? - He cannot even score in Pakistan. Pakistan stop playing Wahab Raiz for a reason, what is his role there?

In first innings we have seen extra pace and zip, we were all out 130, this session our legends were all over the place. In WC QF, you could clearly see difference when Misbah has to face Strac and Co with new ball, Harris was at least defended it with ease. Misbah could not even defend decently.

I don't know what's more annoying. Having to follow the game on Cricinfo or discussing the game on this forum with the T-20 generation.
