Star India buys Indian cricket rights for USD 944 million [Update Post #169]

Star Sports India bag BCCI media rights for INR 6138.1 Crore

Star Sports India Pvt Ltd has pipped Reliance Industries Limited and Sony Pictures Networks India to acquire the BCCI media rights, for both television and digital platforms, for a period of five years (2018-2023) with a whopping bid of INR 6138.1 Crores, the Indian cricket board announced on April 5 (Thursday).

The successful e-bid - 59.39 percent more than their winning bid of 2012-18 cycle - allows Star Sports India Pvt Ltd the rights to India's all international and domestic fixtures at home in the five-year period commencing from April 15, 2018 until Match 31, 2023.
Six companies initially were in the fray for the television and digital rights spread across three packages, with the latter being split in two categories: Indian sub-continent and Rest of the World (that includes USA, Europe, Middle East and African regions amongst others). The packages of rights on sale were Global Television and Rest of the World Digital Rights (GTVRD), Indian Subcontinent Digital Rights (ID), and the Global Consolidated Rights (GCR).

The e-auction began at 2pm IST on Tuesday (April 3) with only three competitors - Star India Pvt Ltd, Reliance Industries Limited, and Sony Pictures Networks India - left in the race after BCCI's evaluation of technical and financial feasibility. At the end of proceedings on day one, the top bid was INR 4442 Crore for GCR package - 15 per cent in excess of the winning bid of the previous five-year cycle, and escalated to INR 6032.50 Crore - 56.65 per cent hike - by the end of Day 2.

In this five-season cycle, India are scheduled to play 102 international matches across formats (subject to FTP clearance by the ICC). In September 2017, Star India also won the worldwide IPL television and digital rights for the five year period of 2018-22 with a bid of INR 16,347.5 Crores. Star India's previous record bid, in 2012, was INR 3851 Crores for a total of 96 matches across formats, and included internet as well as mobile rights. Sony, then known as Multi-Screen Media, narrowly missed out with a bid of INR 3700 Crores.

As per Junaids BCCI cant survive without ICC money, didnt he say that before ? Ohhh Myyyy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The BCCI sold the broadcast rights for India’s home games to Star India for a record total of Rs 6138.1 crore. Announcing the landmark deal on Twitter, BCCI treasurer Anirudh Chaudhry congratulated Star India for emerging as the highest bidder in the e-auction. Star India had to cough up a staggering 59.31 per cent more than what it had paid for the rights in 2012.
This takes the per match value to Rs 60.1 crore for 102 international games across three formats of the game. It was previously Rs 43 crore per match between 2012-18.

On Wednesday, the bids breached the Rs 6,000-crore mark amid intense bidding between Star India and Sony. The day ended with the highest bid touching Rs 6032.5 crore.

How can BCCI survive without $38 million per year that the ICC graciously donates to it? The BCCI would collapse within a year if the ICC stops those handouts.

So BCCI earns 700 million dollars a year kust from media rights but I cannot survive without ICC handouts according to a certain proud "Englishman" :srini

Usd 944 mn
60 crore indian rupees per match.
About 100 crore pak rupees per match.

Insane figures.

If something fishy happens Star will be bankrupted

yes not sure how Star will recover the money with so much media piracy going on. I suppose it will be through AD revenue.

Anyone else know how they will recover the money and make a profit?

It's mainly ads imo. Not sure if any other source of revenue. cricketjoshila

Digital rights is the big seller. Online streaming services will be a big revenue generator. USA the 4th largest revenue market in cricket will be the sizable source of revenue outside India.

All set for IPL. This will be my first season of IPL since Sachin retired. And I'm supporting KKR since Joshila is one of my favorite posters, and I associate myself a lot with Bengali people. There are a hell lot of Bengali people in Assam.

Who are the broadcasters for India's away tours?

Depends.
Sony will broadcast majority of away tours of India as they have got broadcasting rights of Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Zimbabwe, West Indies.
Star has got broadcasting rights for England, Bangladesh and New Zealand.

Our away tours to England and Australia are both with Sony this time.

yep, pretty big indian diaspora around the world and a lot of them will subscribe to watch on their devices

England, Aus, SA, WI, SL are all with Sony

NZ and BD with Star

Sony also has rights for all cricket in UAE.

Thank you guys.

So except for NZ and BD which is with Star, it's Sony all the way.

Sony has the rights to broadcast matches from SA/ZIM/SL/OZ/ENG/WI/PAK in India. STAR has the rights for NZ and BD. So it depends where we are touring.

Sony LIV and Hotstar subscription must remain active. :D

Glad Star bought IPL rights. Sony's Extra Innings made me wanna cry.

Cheerleaders inside a studio? Jokers.

I would have actually preferred it the other way round. :D Star generally do international cricket much better than Sony.

So combined viewing for 2 different channels. And still a whooping deal. :srini

Yeah but what does this do for me. Do I get less ads (actually at this price Star can just put all the ads as it wants). Does it reduce my cable cost. Whats it to me?

you are a bigger and better product now :) be ready to pay more directly or indirectly

Im so glad SONY hasn’t got the deal. Im sick of their EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA LONG boring pre match Innings. Like they focus more on female actress showing her curves than sharing some cricketing knowledge with viewers. Despicable from Sony to use women for more TRP. I still can’t believe they had appointed Mandira Bedi for hosting ICC World Cup in 2003 when she had absolute no clue about cricket

Sony had literally turned cricket into circus, like someone mentioned having cheerleaders in studio WTH  then that evil SIDHU laugh at most hideous jokes #CringeWorthy

Im so glad ICC events, Indian home games, and now Best Cricket league IPL is broadcasted on Star. To hell with SONY and their cheerleaders.

Oh you bet. I have my waistline as a proof. Not so sure about the "pay more" though. I'm gonna take a stand and go basic package. Screw the cricket.

So how much does Star package cost? Back in days (2005-06) we just used to pay like Rs 250 and get all the channels on cable including Star network. Not sure how things work in India these days. It seems Indian network is also going Western way where you pay extra for channels and/or Pay-per view events.

Until now it has been manageable but Star may form a package different from the usual package. Even that is not a problem. The amount of ads is already a lot. You may see a whole screen with ads and there may be some cricket in between. And the ads are a lot louder than the coverage.

I just received a message which says how much are we paying for cricket and how little we care about the farmers. We are getting away from what is basic i.e. food to focus more on entertainment.

What has farmers got to do with sports? Socialism isn India is a disease, people feel entitled to everything, subsidized loans, gas etc.

Facebook would be the last company I deal with if I were the BCCI. Especially with the recently news [has been rumoured for some time...] about Cambridge Analytica.

What does Cambridge Analytica "stealing" data about Facebook users have anything to do with BCCI selling its rights to Facebook?

Look we are both city dwellers. We can discuss politics and what not but you and me will have a big problem if we have all the entertainment and no food on the plate. Anyway this is not relevant to this forum. Lets continue on $$$ that some organization is making.

Tata Sky DTH rates (India):

All Sports Pack:
Rs. 170 per month (approx. 3 $) - includes all channels from both STAR and SONY.

A La Carte: To subscribe individual channels it will cost around 60 to 75 rupees per channel (approx 1 $).

* Above rates are only for SD channels, to get HD channels need to pay Rs 175 (3 $) per month. This HD payment is applicable for all other HD entertainment channels as well.

So, still affordable in India ..Not as bad as AUS and UK insane subscription charges :19:

Lodha report has clearly addressed the advert issue, so any violations and live feed of Match interrupted ..Broadcasters will be heavily penalised by BCCI.

Star is better in that sense, Sony coverage of SA series was horrible..they hardly showed any replays ...Too many adverts, Thank God Sony lost the e-auction :19:

Let me get this right, in India a full subscription fee is $3 a month?

Our DSTV premium subscription fee (to all channels including Supersport channels) in SA is $62 a month.

How are Indian salaries in general?

Btw this will cover only 1 tv. For additional tvs you pay more.

Monopoly is unfortunate, BCCI is no more interested in promotion of games in all corners, just having those viewings on ground isn't enough.

Hopefully SC stays away from this.

Lol, that's ridiculous. I'm reallocating to India soon.

A typical household (which cares to watch and follow IPL) income would be around $6K to $7K. The problem with this comparison is that money goes much further in India. a billion dollar is lot of money in US but 6300 crore is much much larger amount of money in India. i have lots of cousins whose household income is around $8K to $9K who have their own house, car, two wheeler and a maid to work at home. $8K per household is just above the per capita income in India assuming an household of four people (typical in India). INR goes a long way even when compared to PKR and Taka as INR is stronger compared to neighboring economies

How many channels do you get for $12 dollars a month? Do you guys have Champions League Football, Premier League, La Liga and the Buli as part of the package in sports channels? What about watching other cricketing nations?

In Sub-Saharan Africa there's is no competition for Supersport owned by Multichoise. They are so dominant, anyone who's watching sport is watching it through them, it's a monopoly.

$8k, is that an annual figure?
How much would a GP make annually in India? (that would give me a better idea of India's middle threshold)

if you are unwilling to pay even that amount you can always opt for DD (national television's) free direct to home digital service. It is free for lifetime and all Indian matches including IPL are telecast live on DD.

http://www.sportsind.com/cricket/dd-national-live-streaming-india/

currently the channels on free DTH are SD although that is expected to add HD channels in the near future. Quality is good enough for anything up to 50 inch TV...

yes that is an annual figure.. GP, general practitioner, a doctor? Generally doctors make anywhere around 15 to 20 Lakhs with their private practice.. Salary in an hospital starts from around 6 Lakh after the internship.. the data is from few of my friends who went that way years back.. It would be more now.. I think cricketjoshila is a doctor.. he can give a better numbers

You guys are lucky. In order for us to watch the Proteas we have to folk out the full amount. Unless it's their home season, in which case all matches on home soil are available through the national broadcaster the SABC (they are useless believe me).

Every sporting event thats telecast in India will be in that package. It includes all channels including HD ones and all programmings. Some 400plus channels i believe. Though i watch barely 50 of them.

In India its a DuoPoly. STAR and Sony. Now a third entrant has arrived Reliance.

Ok, but I'm too lazy to Google, US $ work better for me. But thanks.

If you dont do private practice and only work in a hospital as a registrar its around $15 to $20k. This is for someone holding only the basic MBBS degree.

For someone who is into private chamber it depends on how many patients he sees.

A MD will likely make $50 to $60k in hospitals as a fresher. Private practice sky is the limit.

A DM will make $100k from hospital and private practice has no limits.

All national broadcasters are useless so i believe you.

The advantage in india is the sheer numbers.

Yea .. India is still cost effective.

Use to pay more $ for watching live cricket in TV when I was in Melbourne (don't remember exact amount).

This is incredible, an annual income of $8k is ~R108k (local currency). Therefore a household of 4/3 can't afford a premium subscription R809 p/m ($62). Cost of living in SA is high.

No Cricket or Rugby for them, they get to watch football. Which is available through "Compact" subscription. Even then football is limited to local soccer, the EPL and one selected Champions League fixture.

Hence the misconception that the black population isn't interested in cricket. It's hard to follow a team you see once a year. During our home season millions are interested, but they'll watch at home through the SABC, which always dwarfs Superspot numbers.

The Indian middle class is reportedly 300 to 400 million strong..let's assume 50% of them or about 200 million follow and watch IPL on TV....If star were to charge them a nominal subscription of $5 for entire IPl, they would make a billion dollars in one year alone from subscription..not even including ad revenues...So that's why the CEO said they are not as expensive as made out to be..

DD ( Govt. owned) free to air channel will telecast all India international HOME matches ... This was made mandatory by Honourable Supreme Court of India. So very poor in India can always watch Cricket on DD without any charges.

STAR even after paying whopping $$$$ for broadcasting India matches, they must share Live feed with DD :19:

Only downside is quality of DD and commentry will be of low standard compared to paid HD channels by STAR / SONY.

If by Tvs you mean competition as with Skysports (owned by Sky plc) vs BT sports (BT consumer) in the UK, we don't have that in South Africa. There's only one satellite tv company in the country (in fact Sub-Saharan Africa), that's DSTV owned Multichoice. Multichoice is a subsidiary of Naspers

Naspers own everything really, print and digital media.

For $62 we get to watch everything, sport, music, movies, discovery channels including Nat geo, News: CNN, Sky News, RT, CNBC everything including local news channels. We have about 300 channels.

We're on the loop really, there's no pay per view either. We watched the Manny vs Mayweather fight at no extra cost.

And yes there's the Internet too. Like I said, it's a monopoly they are dominant. They shut down channels as they please, like ESPN.

That is not big amount because PSL will make more in 10 years 😎 because junaids think so

As a premium subscriber you get to watch anything online through their app for free at no extra cost to you.

Make sure you're connected through a WiFi though, data is very expensive in South Africa. Don't recommend streaming on mobile whilst on the go.

After Jio from Reliance (Mukesh Ambani ..Owner of Mumbai Indians) entered mobile market... DATA has become damn cheap in India.

For $6 one time charge, can use daily limit of 2 GB mobile data for 84 days :19:

Most steam matches in mobile in India !

Even when they tour away from home?

CSA takes a pay cut from Supersport every year due to broadcasting home season matches on the national broadcaster.

We should have a similar system to yours and make it mandatory by law for all home matches to be broadcast on free to air. I remember a year where the SABC was cash strapped and couldn't afford to pay CSA even the discounted value. The general public couldn't watch our home season for the first time since readmission. It was a disgrace really, not on CSA who've been great, but the SABC who are so badly run like all other State Owned Enterprises in this country.
