Disgraced Australian captain Steve Smith has given his conditional availability for the fourth edition of the Pakistan Super League insisting he would only matches in the United Arab Emirates and not travel to Pakistan for the play-offs and final.

Smith, who is serving a 12-month ban for his role in the ball tampering during a Test match against South Africa earlier this year, is allowed to appear in T20 leagues worldwide.

His ban ends before the World Cup in England next year and it is the first time the Australian batsman has given his availability for the PSL.

According to a reliable source in the Pakistan Super League secretariat, besides some other top foreign players have also made it clear they wouldn't travel to Pakistan for the last leg of the PSL featuring eight matches including the final in Karachi.

"Smith and these players have said they will only be available to play in UAE," the source said.

South Africa's AB de Villiers has also limited his first ever appearance in the PSL to just two weeks and that too apparently only for matches in the UAE.

The names of 371 foreign players and 311 Pakistani players will feature in the PSL players draft to be held on November 20th in Islamabad.

Except for India, players from all the test playing nations and associate member countries of the ICC are available for the players draft.

Many of the foreign stars will only be available for part of the PSL when they are free of national duty or after the conclusion of the Big Bash league in Australia.

For example Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum and Australian opener Chris Lynn will only be available for the league following the conclusion of BBL.

The local list of players also includes the names of Pakistan's former captain, Salman Butt, who has completed a five-year ban for spot-fixing and discarded stars, Imran Farhat, Imran Nazir, Abdul Razzaq.

In the third PSL also the six franchises in the tournament faced difficulties when some of their overseas stars refused to travel to Lahore and Karachi to play in the play-offs and final due to security concerns.

The PCB has once again told the franchises it is their responsibility to decide whether they want to sign on foreign players who are not willing to play in Pakistan

"The onus has been put on us that we must convince our foreign signings to also be prepared to play in Pakistan," a franchise owner said.

In a big boost for the PSL, the PCB has apparently already sold the tournament title rights for a booming 1.5 billion rupees for a three-year period a big increase on the previous sponsorship of one billion rupees.

Then I wouldn’t have put him in platinum category. Sounds like a failure on part of the PSL management.

Why are people surprised? Smith and de Villiers agreeing to play in Pakistan was never a possibility.

only players who are willing to travel Pakistan should be picked. No need of big names who are willing play only in empty stadiums of UAE

We must realize the ground realities and not go by our delusions or fantasies.

Players will eventually come to Pak but not this year. Just hope that things improve.

Don't pick him, beggars can't be choosers and in this case he's the beggar.

PSL needs a big name like Steve Smith

He is bigger name than any of the active Pak cricketer

So he is going to get picked and will also be one of the highest paid player in the league

Shouldn't be selected in that. Pretty mediocre T20 player anyway.

He isn't that good a T20 player to demand special privilege IMO. Modern great for sure but his credentials in the shortest format are laughable.

Sethi assured this won't happen and players who are not willing to come Pakistan will not be in drafts. Guess Sethi is not here.

Better to not select them. This will not benefit Pakistan in returning anyhow if big names and players are gonna keep withdrawing from playing in Pakistan.

Then PSL 10 will also happen in UAE.

I don't think we should go gaga over foreign players. We have plenty of domestic talent, with big names in all the psl teams. If they can't play in Pakistan then they are not the right fit. Simple as that. Pakistan's security situation has drastically improved over the years and bringing cricket back will help normalize things further.

What has his credentials to do with his choice of not playing in a country which he deems unsafe?

Same ridiculous argument was used against Bangladeshi players for not touring Pakistan.

PSL is at the point where the franchise owners can tell the players who are unwilling to play in Pakistan to take a hike.

By continuing to accept the demands of players to only play in the UAE and avoid Pakistan they are just setting a bad precedent. Hold the PSL in Pakistan even with not the elite world class players, show that the psl can be held hassle free, incident free and with fool proof security and the players will eventually flock.

Should not be picked anyway - Smith will jump on an opportunity to play IPL once his ban finishes so will not likely to remain committed to PSL for too long.

No need to bend over for anyone if they don't want to play in Pakistan they shouldn't be playing in PSL
( Pakistan Super League)

We were doing just fine without AB and Smith.
I wont be bending rules for them.

I think Pakistanis have to be smarter here. These guys should be selected and over the course of next two seasons, they will be willing to come to Pakistan once they grow some affection for the team. PSL needs these big names. Lets not act emotionally.

Don't sign all players who don't want to visit Pakistan

But sign few of them who can help PSL build its brand

Even De Villiers would be playing only 4 matches but his presence would attract audience from South Africa & other countries where he has a huge fanbase(like India where is currently the most popular foreign player8)

That never happens. These T20 leagues are usually used by the likes of Gayle and others to jump from lilypad to lilypad to top up their retirement fund prior to the eventual hop into the sunset.

The only affection a player might have to a team is to their national team they have been representing by virtue of their birth in a particular country. And even that is questionable for the likes of Gayle.

I had expected this.

Don't like it though. Any franchise that picks him will have to change their plans.

Steve Smith is set to go under the knife to fix an elbow injury with less than three months to serve on his year-long suspension.

Smith is set to undergo surgery to repair a ligament in his right elbow on Tuesday.

The right-hander is then expected to be in a brace for six weeks, which will be followed by extensive rehabilitation.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson said on Saturday his return to playing will be made clearer once the brace is removed.

Smith returned home from the Bangladesh Premier League overnight to undergo scans on the injured elbow.

The injury is a major blow to Smith, whose 12-month suspension for his involvement in the Cape Town ball-tampering scandal ends on March 28.

The setback comes with less than six months to go before Australia's World Cup title defence in England, which is immediately followed by an away Ashes series.

The 29-year-old played only two matches for the Comilla Victorians in the BPL, where he scored 16 and zero.

The ban handed down by Cricket Australia in the wake of the Newlands incident precludes Smith and former teammate David Warner from playing international cricket and domestic cricket in Australia.

Both players have instead played in Canada, the Caribbean and Bangladesh in T20 competitions, and on home soil they have played NSW Premier Cricket with success.

While it's uncertain when and where Smith and Warner will return to the national team, limited-overs captain Aaron Finch said last month both players will be warmly welcomed back.

"When Davey and Steve are ready to make their - be allowed to come back and play cricket for Australia and their states - from my point of view they'll be welcomed back with open arms," Finch said.

"Whatever's happened, has happened.

"The punishment has been dealt. They've been working really hard off the field to meet every criteria, and go above and beyond everything that has been asked of them, to come back and play international cricket again."

Steve Smith presumably ruled out of PSL

News in Australia reporting that he's due to have elbow surgery soon due to a ligament issue, that will have him in a brace for 6 weeks, followed by rehab. This should effectively rule him out of the PSL, with even the ODI series against Pakistan after his ban expires looking difficult.

I heard that he was only going back to Australia and would just miss 2 BPL matches. Now he's been ruled out of PSL. Must be a bad injury

Elbow... ugh...

I remember another elbow injury to another great batsman in the past... I hope Smith's career doesnt decline after this.. fingers crossed

Ohh with Steve Smith now injured and missing the PSL, I wonder who Multan Sultans will bring in.

Will be interesting to see who they replace him with.

Steve Smith ruled out of HBL PSL 2019 due to elbow injury

• Multan Sultans to find a replacement for Smith in the HBL PSL Replacement Draft

Lahore, 12 January:

Multan Sultans have been dealt a blow with Australian batsman Steve Smith ruled out of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2019 due to an elbow injury.

According to Cricket Australia, Smith will undergo surgery and is expected to wear a brace for six weeks before commencing rehabilitation.

The HBL PSL 2019 will be held ‪from 14 February to 17 March, Smith is not expected to regain full fitness in this period.

“I am disappointed I won’t be able to play in HBL PSL but I wish Multan Sultans all the best for this year’s tournament,” said Steve Smith.

“I was looking forward to playing the tournament and helping the team try to win the trophy. We have a talented team and I am confident that they will do very well.”

The PCB's message on Smith's injury, “We are sad to lose a player of Steve’s calibre but we wish him a speedy recovery."

"Hopefully we will see him in future editions of HBL PSL, the league fans would miss seeing him live in action this season," said a PCB spokesman.

Multan Sultans will now seek a replacement for Smith at the Replacement Draft later this month.

The Replacement Draft date with the pick order would be announced in due course.

Would love to have seen him play in the PSL. Hope he recovers for the ODI series against Pakistan. Want us to beat the best with their best players available.

I would love to see David Warner or Chris Lynn replace Smith. If not then it will be interesting who replaces him in the Drafts. Now with AB coming to Lahore, and Moody not staying as head coach specially.

Smith is easily the worst of Fab 4 in LOIs. I would pick a decent slogger over him. PSL isn't missing much.
