We have discussed the comparison between modern day greats vs the previous generation greats e.g kohli vs sachin has been discussed many times .

It's time we discussed Smith vs Ponting
Currently the best Australian batsman vs the greatest batsman Australian had in 90s and 2000s

Few days back I had seen disturbing comments from Aussie kids at some forum where they were claiming that smith is the greatest Australian batsman of all time since don bradman. Why this is disturbing for me?because I belong to the generation of 90s kids n I have seen much better Australian batsmen like steve waugh ,mark waugh, alan border ,Michael Slater ,Mathew Hayden,gilchrist etc I rate all of them much better and classy than steve smith

Therefore my question is who is the greatest Australian batsman after Don Bradman ? Is steve smith deserve to be called as the greatest since bradman just because of his huge batting average?
 
I haven't followed Smith enough to comment about him being better than ponting or not however the way he performed in the recently concluded test series in India makes him a far better player than ponting against spin in tests..

Now someone else can probably comment on his abilities of playing other conditions compared to ponting..
 
Greg Chappell, Alan Border, Steve Waugh and Ponting are all ahead of Smith as of now. However, at the rate at which he is motoring along in Test cricket, he could end up as the number 2 after Bradman by the time he retires. The only problem is, given his shoddy technique, he may not be prolific deep into his thirties once his reflexes start to wane.
 
Smith is a better batsman than Mark Waugh, Damien Martyn, Michael Hussey and pretty much every Aus batsman i have seen in my life barring Ponting and Steve Waugh.

Comparing Smith to test openers like Hayden and Langer is tough. But i would say Smith is better at his poisition than those guys were at theirs.

Smith will probably end up at least equalling Ponting if not surpassing him.

Bradman is overrated
 
Ponting was a decent player of spin bowling and got fine average in Asia . Ponting played in an era where he faced n dominated all the great bowlers like wasim waqar saqlain shoaib walsh Ambrose Donald Pollock zaheer murli vaas etc while smith huge average is mostly due to week bowling attack on batting paradise pitches
 
Not only Ponting, many other Aus batsmen are ahead of Smith at this moment.

both are far better than Bradman in terms of cricketing skills ... if these 2 greats had the luxury of facing trundlers that ruled world cricket in the 1930s they would simply not get out in most inngs they played.

You can't compare amateur era with professional era, bradman is the GOAT because his record was 1000 times better than anyone else in his era.. Battingn skill wise you can't compare bradman or anyone else for that matter from amateur era to today's batting standards they don't stand a chance..
 
I would take ricky over steve smith any day of the week. Joke of a comparison at this stage of steve's career.
 
Smith is the best of this era in Australia in Test matches.

But I think Chappel and Pointing are ahead of him considering the bowlers they faced.
 
Greg Chappell, Ponting and Steve Waugh. teven Smith nothing compared to these stalwarts. Statistics should'nt be everything to judge cricketers. Chapell, Waugh bros. and Ponting were great to watch. Smith is crap.
 
I feel like Smith is a little slow in ODIs and lack that extra gear that Ponting had. Ponting could destroy bowling attacks and had far better range of shots. His cover drives and hooks/pulls were some of the best shots ever played by a batsmen.

It's Greg first & then a debate between Ponting, Smith & Hervey.

In a timeless world, top 3 AUS batsmen probably are Bradman, Trumper & Greg.

If I take Miller given the No. 6 spot, my top 5 for AUS will be

Trumper
Harvey
Bradman
Greg
Pointing

Nail Hervey wasn't an opener, hence we can argue for Hayden (or Morris, I go for Hayden).


In a real world (for which, I take cricket before 60s, a pass time more than a professional sports),

I'll drop Miller for Steve, & replace Bradman & Trumper by AB & Hayden

For the other opener's spot, Smith can be a choice in future, but right now, I'll pick Tubby Taylor.
