Virat Kohli is arguably one of the best batsmen in world cricket. When you combine all three formats, you would be hard pressed to see a batsman with such an exemplary record.

But the one place Virat has always faltered has been in selecting the right XI – especially in Test matches.

The South African tour saw him drop Ajinkya Rahane in the first two Tests, which cost India some important runs.

Virat has always been adventurous with his team selections and sometimes that has gotten in the way of finding the right combination for the team. The upcoming Test series against England will leave the Indian captain with some selection headaches.

India have picked three openers for the upcoming Test series. KL Rahul, Murali Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan will be competing for the two spots in the XI.

Shikhar Dhawan played the first Test in South Africa and was replaced by Rahul for the next two Tests. Rahul himself did not have a great series with the bat. So, it will be interesting to see who will be the two openers for the first Test.

The middle order, however, looks more settled. Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli will be the key members of the batting line-up.

The wicketkeeping spot received a jolt as well, as India’s first choice keeper Wriddhiman Saha is out for the series. India now has to decide between Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant.

Karthik was part of India’s successful 2007 campaign and scored lots of runs as an opener. Pant, though, gives India an exciting choice at No. 6. The young batsman has been playing in England over the last couple of months and has scored lots of runs in both the formats he has played in.

The No. 7 spot will most likely be occupied by Hardik Pandya.

Hardik, who had a great start in the South African Test series, faded away by the end of it. Even though he provides India with the right balance, the captain will want him to be more consistent with either discipline.

The bowling attack received another major setback with both Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah missing due to injury. This leaves India Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Mohammad Shami to pick from.

India also need to decide whether they want to go with two spinners or just one. Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are the three options the Indian captain has.

Ashwin will most likely be the first choice spinner, as he provides India with a batting option at No. 8. He has batted as high as six for India in Test matches.

In the absence of Kumar, Sharma most likely will be the leader of the attack. Shami is just making a comeback from injury, but the general consensus is that he is India’s best Test pacer, so he will most likely partner Ishant with the new ball.

The last spot will be between Kuldeep Yadav and Umesh Yadav, depending on the combination India decide to play.

So, problems aplenty for Virat Kohli and some important decisions to be made ahead of the first Test match at Edgbaston.

The four-day game against Essex will be crucial, as it is the only chance for the visitors to determine the fitness and form of the players ahead of the first Test.

Virat Kohli has always made some left field decisions in his short career as captain. He has been successful in a few and has failed in a few, but he will know that making the right call will be crucial to India’s chances in this series.

My probable XI: KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane (VC), Rishabh Pant (WK), Ravichandran Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, Kuldeep Yadav/Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma.

Cheteshwar pujara has failed yet again, he won't help india's cause.
Kl rahul should be our no. 3.
Shikher and vijay should be our opening pair.

India's key players over 5 tests will be Kohli, Rahane, Ishant and Shami. If these guys stay fit and fire consistently, India has a chance.

For Eng same is true for Root, Cook, Broad and Anderson. Eng start ahead, but if Ben Stokes rediscovers his bowling mojo, they'll be outright favorites.

Good write up.

I think India will struggle in the first 2-3 test matches beacuse of injuries to their key bowlers.Rahul will not be picked until the third test.

I don’t like Ashwin in the lineup. They should have included Chahal in the test squad

What has shikhar dhawan done then if pujara is failure? dhawan will go in first five overs if there is even one inch swing. Pujara atleast removes the shine of ball by playing tuk tuk 20 of 100 balls.

Pujara is not in form, i can't play him just to score 20 of 100.
If the ball doesn't swing much(usually in 3rd or 4th innings) then he has the ability to destroy english attack, which pujara lacks. I think that we will get some pattas this time around in england, so dhawan is my choice.

Shouldn't Kohli be no. 3? Kane takes that responsibility mainly for himself, I think Root will start to again too, why should Kohli drop himself down to 4?

That frees up lesser players to play in the middle order against the older ball. Best should bat three, I have firmly believed in that (Bradman, Ponting, Younis etc).

Compton, Greg Chappell, Gower, Miandad, Crowe, SRT, Pietersen all batted at four.

Test batting is different and rahane and pujara are suited for it. They should be in team along with Raul and kohli

Only in India and Sri Lanka.

Pujara I agree is a bit of dilemma selection because he has not delivered as much as expected.
However if he clicks, then at test level his type of batting is required. I say give him two tests to see how it goes, especially since has been playing in England for last few months.

That should be the playing eleven out of available choices.

However whatever we have experienced about Kohli’s captaincy, highly unlikely that he will go with this team.

Dhawan will be his preferred opener over Rahul at least for 1st 2 tests. Same goes with Karthik. Also he will probably go with Jadeja given his experience over Kuldeep/Umesh as Pandya will do the 3rd seamer job.

Rahul,Pant, Umesh/Kuldeep might find a place by 3rd if players from their respective places fail.

Kohli’s probable eleven for 1st 2 tests-

Dhawan
Vijay
Chepu
Kohli
Rahane
Karthik
Pandya
Ashwin
Jadeja
Shami
Ishant

Lol at Jadeja and Pandya in the playing eleven. Tests are in England not in India.

Virat vs Anderson for some reason is giving me Tendulkar vs Pollock 2006 vibe.
Both were class, but somehow Pollock was able to dismiss Tendulkar 4 times in 9 encounters in both ODIs and Tests.

Anderson is the most knowledgeable pacer in the world atm. Knows conditions in the world inside out, esp English conditions. If there is slightly something in the pitch, he makes the batters pay for slightest of the mistakes. It's going to be an exciting encounter.

Combination wise, I think India should go in with Ashwin as he gives amazing depth in batting. If you ask me, I would have Ashwin bat at no. 7, and go in with 4 pacers. No pandya in test XI. Shami, Bhuvneshwar, Umesh, Ishant should be the 4 pacers.

I dont think India will do well in the test series with their main bowler Bhuvi injured. He was the best exponent of swing in the team and his absence will be HUGE!

Indian bowling doesnt look competent to take 20 wickets, unless the pitches offer spin.

Lol at Jadeja and Pandya in the playing eleven. Tests are in England not in India.

Well, Kohli is known for his bizarre selections. Otherwise Which sane captain drops Rahane for Rohit Sharma.

Anyways Jadeja is more useful than Ashwin with his darters when it doesn’t turn. So one shouldn’t be surprised if he gets a go.

As far as Pandya is concerned, he is 2nd coming of Sobers, also happens to be best buddy of Kohli so he’ll definitely find a place. Mark my words.

Compton, Greg Chappell, Gower, Miandad, Crowe, SRT, Pietersen all batted at four.

I know but at one time Pakistan had Abbas at 3 and KP was roundly criticised for years hiding behind Bell or whoever got to go at 3 at various stages in the England line up. Heck Inzy, Pak's most popular batsman since Javed was criticised for years for not being higher up and hiding out at 5. etc etc

I didnt say the best have always batted at 3, I said they should.

Dhawan
Vijay
Pujara
Kohli
Rahul (Keeper Batsman)
Rahane
Pandya
Ashwin
Kuldeep
Ishant
Bumrah/Shami (Play Bumrah if he is fit).

I have no faith in Pujara. Rahane is a walking wicket for a spinner. He simply cannot play spin. That's 2 batsmen that are gone for nothing. But Last chance for Pujara. He can't be failing and expect to get into the team.

Kuldeep is a must. He will be the X-Factor. Jaddu is decent. But he won't do anything on English Pitches. Ashwin seems to have improved. He deserves the first go a head of Jaddu.

Loss of BK is a big blow. He is built to bowl in these pitches.

If Shami is fit, then I would play him ahead of Ishant in the above lineup.

Dk has a very good record in England.
He's also playing well today

Kohli has to score most of the runs. I am still unconvinced by India test attack. If Rahul the keeper bats well then India should play five specialist bowlers.

No matter what team combination we choose we are not winning with such a weak batting order. Our only good batsman Kohli himself is a dud in these conditions. Since England too look weak I don't see a 0-5 humiliation but England should win comfortably.

When a team has hardik pandya as an allrounder and Pujara as a no:3 batsman, then all the talks of team combination being very crucial is all crap talk.

India to win matches abroad rely on individual brilliance whether it's Ishant Sharma/Agarkar/Kumble bowling or Dravid's/Laxman's/SRTs batting. Even when India drew a test series against Australia, tkar hardly scored any runs in the first 3 tests and am sure before the test series there would have been tons of articles on how Tkar is crucial to India's success since until then Dravid had an ordinary record in Australia.

It never happens the predictable way, esp when you are hoping for upsets.
