Kanpur: A 21-year-old Bachelor in Medical Lab Technology (BMLT) student has accused three of her college mates of trying to rape her a fortnight ago on campus, police said on Tuesday. According to a complaint lodged on Monday, the incident took place on March 16 in a classroom of the Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University. The second-year student alleged that the three called her to an empty classroom on the pretext of sharing a meal. Once inside, they allegedly tried to rape her.

Her cries drew the attention of some senior students who came to her rescue, she said, reported news agency PTI. A case was filed at the Kalyanpur Police Station on Monday night under sections 75 (sexual harassment) and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of BNS. The police identified the three men as Vaibhav Mishra, Anuj Vishwakarma, and Ritesh Nirmal and detained all three, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) SM Qasim Abidi.

"The statement of the female student is being recorded, and a medical examination is underway. Further action will be taken based on evidence," the DCP said.

Her victim's father alleged that the accused threatened his family with firearms and sharp weapons. The university authorities have launched an internal inquiry and formed a committee, which is expected to submit its report within a week, Pro Vice-Chancellor Sudhir Kumar Awasthi said.

In a similar incident from Uttar Pradesh, a court here has sentenced a man to death for raping and killing an eight-year-old girl in 2024, officials said on Tuesday. In the verdict pronounced on Monday, Additional Sessions Judge (POCSO Court) Vinod Kumar Chaurasia also imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 on the convict, Mukesh Patel. Failure to pay the fine would attract a jail term of one year, District Government Advocate Manoj Pandey said.
Public prosecutor Vinay Kumar Tripathi appeared for the prosecution. Sharing the case details, Pandey said that on the evening of October 3, 2024, the girl went to a medical store, but did not return home. The next day, her body was found in a nearby field.
