Big day today - England could turn the game on its head with a wild display of BazBall or... Australia will continue dominance.

Root is playing soo aggressive

He is in total control so far but can get out any soon with this attacking shot making

not sure i can cope with a ramp first ball of the day...

What a ball from Cummins. Lad is a proper pace bowler, you dont have many left like him.

Pace is Pace yaar!

Cummins getting nice lateral movement and Root playing all the shots in book

Some high quality cricket

That was a slightly dicey overnight position for England and it felt like Australia had snatched away the momentum, but it’s been an excellent first 45 minutes for the batting side to get the lead up to 101-3. If the rain stays away tomorrow (which it is sadly not forecast to) then we could have an all time classic here.

How come Cummins is getting so much reverse swing? We need Basit Ali's expert opinion on this.

:shrug

Actually Australia missing Starc's pace now, especially since the ball is reversing.

Brook gone.

Game on.

All results possible.

Quick wickets after lunch and this match is Australia's.

Key phase in the match.

Love the way the crowd are always calling out the cheating Aussies.

Almost got Stokes - but bump catch

England lead heading to the 200+ mark

Seems poms are planning to set a target around 300

But all that depends up on how stokes play

AUS keep chipping away.

Excluding ENG's effort last year vs IND, the highest successful Test chase at Edgbaston is 283. Graeme Smith led South Africa to victory in 2008 with a big hundred.

England should be a bit dissapointed with themselves. Root and Brook should have looked to bat on rather than try to take on Lyon so aggressively.

Anything over 275 will be a tough chase here. Australia need to wrap it up quickly

I think 275 would be a tough chase, but England will probably leave Aussies plenty of time to play risk free cricket to chase it down

Cummins is utterly unplayable, he’s the best bowler in the world by far.

Australia need to tighten it up. Too many easy singles off Lyon. They need to pack the legside for Ollie and force him to drive against the turn.

England throwing away their wickets.
Root stumped for the first time in his test career.

Anything over 300, England should be favorites. It all depends on how much Moeen bhai can slog.

If Labuschagne has cleanly caught this, that is absolutely outstanding.

He hasn't, it's grounded. Great delivery from Hazlewood.

If this was not out as ball is grassed, why was Shubhman Gill given out in WTC finals?

Double standards?

Pitch is flat anything under 300 is
comfortable.

Will need a monumental choke to lose now for Australia. England been mediocre in this innings. Australia been smart.

If you're gonna declare, at least get 450 man. Aus is not a team you can gamble with, you have to make every run count.

Game could be a thriller here like the 2005 Edgbaston test.

That declaration is looking is looking increasingly stupid with each wicket here.

Yup, 300 looking unlikely and Oz will be hot favourites. Doing decs in 1st inns is way too stupid unless you got 600 and need to for time wise.

300 would have been a tough chase looking at todays wicket

Earlier the innings nice lateral movement was there, now decent looking turn and some odd steep bounce too

But for a 250ish total australia would still fancy their chance

Melbourne 2016 ? We declared at 443-8 and still lost by an innings :))

I'm still not over that (or losing to ENG on this ground in the same year).

Lol bro Australia and Pakistan, it's always pain for us. Just have to embrace the pain.

Imagine we had won at Brisbane.

Humiliating loss coming for England.

Australia dominating them in their own den as they did in last series.

There is a long way to go.

This wont be an easy chase, last innings at Edgbaston in the Ashes will bring a lot of pressure.

Of course the English bowlers will need to bowl well but the Aussie batters need to be mentally strong to chase this down.

Khawaja is a key wicket, he can bat long against pressure. If Khawaja is there by lunch tomorrow, Aussie will be on their way.

Even if England lose, it will not be humiliating, losing the game on day 5. Its the first test of a 5 match series.

This is a close, even match unlike the world test one sided final.

280 isn't a tough chase on this wicket. Australia will win comfortably. Remember, England are playing at home and a home loss is always embarassing and humiliating.

Aussie openers looking good so far.

By the way, Bairstow has had a nightmare this match!

Comfortably is chasing it down with 4/5 wickets remaining and with time remaining. This is possible but most likely will not be as easy.

Losing a home test isnt humiliating lol. This is top level sport which is played over 5 tests. England lost badly at Lords in the first test in 2005 but still went on to win the series.

Good tactics by Aus openers, going after Jimmy.

Moeen has a big role in the innings but hast been bowling for long periods. I would have picked the young leggie Rehan Ahmed.

The declaration on Day 1 will come back and haunt England. Those extra 30/40 runs could have been very handy.

Will Moeen be fit to bowl?
Moeen Ali is nursing a blister on the index finger of his bowling hand, so how big a role will he play, ATHERS?

"You hope Moeen can bowl through the pain because we saw some serious turn for Lyon. He is not as accurate as Lyon, not as good a bowler, but he is as big a spinner of the ball as him. If Moeen was fit to bowl he would play a massive part but we just don’t know."

Englands bowling attack is lacking serious pace. Not sure if Wood is injured but he was a must for this ageing attack.

You’re going way over the top with these comments. There’s no embarrassment or humiliation, or even dominance really. It’s been a competitive game and a good watch. It continues to be closely fought.

Think there will be a few bruised egos tomorrow when England win - never underestimate Day 5 pressure.

Some Indian fans are still upset after their side was humiliated in the final.

England's bowling is a slight worry but both teams here are evenly matched. This series will come down to which team can hold their nerve and take big chances.

As KP said

"You don't have Mitchell Johnson running in at 95 or Shoaib Akhtar, or even Woody (Mark Wood). Woody will run in and he will test you?"

Kevin Pietersen compared the current set with former stars Mitchell Johnson, Shoaib Akhtar, who he believed had more fire in terms of pace.

Thanks bros.

I’m not sure who is going to win this one, think it could go either way, but all the signs thus far is that we’re going to have a competitive, entertaining series and a good contest across the five matches.

Some nice turn is there in the wicket but poms doesn't have that quality spinner to match lyon who took 8 wickets in the match. This will be a huge difference

Khawaja is a like a hybrid of Aus/Asian batsmen. He can cut and pull the short ball with easy but also has incredible wrists to manoeuvre and find the gaps. A man who is full of confidence and belief to score anywhere, against any attack.

England need him out asap.

Khawaja is so good to watch.

All the hallmarks of a solid opening batter.

England need a flintoff-esque over here to get back in the game

I've never seen Usman Khawaja bat better than since his comeback last year.

Never saw him live but the bits I've seen of him online, Khawaja seems quite David Gower-esque with his languid elegance.
