Having watched england current pathetic effort in leeds and one batsmen getting into double figures in there entire inns. It makes me cast my mind back through years gone by to what are some of the best Test inns that have been seen on this ground. Am sure the older members of PP (MIG and SAJ) can think back to seeing Don Bradman scoring a triple century on this ground. For the younger generation.

Headingley traditionally has been a tough venue to bat on. But the memories that stick in the mind for good batting efforts here are

Saleem Malik 99 vs England in 1987, an inns of real class showing how to bat on a tough wicket. In the end this inns help pakistan win a test by an INNs and went towards a 1-0 series win for pakistan eventually. He played similar inns in 1992 in a losing cause.

Ijaz Ahmed 141 vs England 1996 - probably not as seamer friendly as the surfaces in 82, 87 and 92 tours but at same time it was tough batting here early on and after not been able to locate the middle of his bat early on, ijaz finally grew grew into his inns and played a gem of a knock

Shai Hope - 147 & 118* - After been slated by critics at home in WI (for shambolic team perfomance in previous test) and also by myself included. Shai hope played these two Gems to help WI pull off a stunning win.

Any more great headingley knocks anyone can remember?

Vengsarkar 102 & 61, Later on Dravid's 148 on day 1.

Oh yeah the dravid inns was a good one, when him and sanjay bangar stonewalled and laid foundations on day 1 so that they could brutally assault england on day 2 of that test match. I remember sachin giving caddick a pasting in that game.

India's 1st series win in england if memory serves me right also. I was only 5 at the time so don,t remember the series though.

yes. Should have been a white wash as India completely dominated all 3 tests. Rain spoilt the third test. That was the start Vengsarkar's purple patch. Scored over 1600 runs in 16 tests from that point.

Both India and Pakistan had strong sides in the mid 80s.

Graham Gooch 154* in 1991 against Ambrose, Walsh, Marshall, and Patterson.

Malik & Vengsarker definitely, but none is remotely close to the best ever Test innings before Brian's 153* - GGooch's carrying bat innings of 154* out of like 250 (over 60%) in 1991, when next best score was in 20s, against an attack of Marshall, Ambrose, Walsh & Bishop (?). Just very next year, Salim Malik played two Not out innings into 80s, in a team total less than 400 under extremely difficult conditions.

But, that Gooch innings simply doesn't have any competitor - it was played in 3rd innings of the game against Lara's 4th innings, hence I put this one as 2nd.

Best I have seen:

Rahul Dravid 148
Kevin Pietersen 149 vs SA
Angelo Mathews 160
Shai Hope twin tons

But the best of all time has to be Gooch 154 vs west indies.

Salim Malik's 99 was brilliant, a gem of an innings from a fantastic batsman.

Has to be Shai Hope.

He reincarnated the spirit of West Indies Test cricket which was facing a tough time.

By far the best innings ever played in headingly Was mark butcher 173 in 2001 against a mighty Australian lineup when all hope was lost and it seemed that England would just roll over for McGrath and co.

1. Pietersen 149 vs South Africa 2012
2. Butcher 173 vs Australia 2001
3. Dravid 148 vs England 2002
4. Hope 118 not out vs England 2017
5. Mathews 160 vs England 2014

Stokes and Bairstow's innings today will be up there :)

The ones that spring to mind are:

Saleem Malik in 1987 v Eng
Graham Gooch in 1991 v WI
Mark Butcher in 2001 v Aus
Shai Hope in 2017 v Eng

That’s better than Botham for me.

Incredible.

Never seen a thing like this , one of the great sporting performance by an individual.
