The Cricket West Indies Discussion

Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirms the resignation of West Indies Senior Men’s and Youth Selector, Ramnaresh Sarwan, due to personal reasons.

Ramnaresh Sarwan was appointed to as a Selector for the West Indies Men’s Youth and Selection Panels on January 6, 2022, however he has informed CWI that he is no longer able to continue in the role.

CWI Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams thanked Ramnaresh for his contributions during his appointment saying, “Given the depth of his experience in the game, we are disappointed that Ramnaresh is unable to continue in the role of Selector, but we fully understand and accept his reasons. We are grateful for his contribution during the period he was involved and hope that he will be able to contribute to West Indies Cricket in some capacity in the future.”

CWI will initiate a recruitment process for the Selector role as soon as possible through a competitive process, based on established criteria. The aim will be to complete this process in the shortest possible time so that a suitable candidate can complete the Selection Panel in carrying out its duties. Robert Haynes, who is the current Lead Selector of the Men’s Youth Selection Panel and former interim Chairman of Selectors, will act as replacement until a suitable full-time candidate is appointed. Robert will work on the Selection Panel alongside Senior Men’s Team Lead Selector the Most Honorable Dr Desmond Haynes and Head Coach Phil Simmons.

The West Indies Men’s team are currently touring the Netherlands for the first ever ODI Series between the Netherlands and West Indies as part of the ICC ODI Super League.

Newly appointed West Indies One-Day International (ODI) captain, Nicholas Pooran, has warned against complacency from his team ahead of Tuesday’s start of their three-match ODI series against the Netherlands in Amstelveen.

The West Indies will play matches on May 31, June 2 and June 4 in what will be their first-ever ODI series against the Dutch side and Pooran believes his players need to be in the correct frame of mind.

“Obviously, we don’t want to be complacent. We just saw the Netherlands play New Zealand and they did well,” said Pooran in a pre-match press conference on Monday.

“They didn’t get a win but, as a team, they played really well. They have some good players.”

Pooran, who recently ended a stint for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League, will be in charge in his first assignment as full-time West Indies ODI captain and provided some insight as to how he plans to lead.

“I’ll try to make the best decisions for the team. I’m very instinctive so a lot of my decisions you guys may not like but, hopefully, it will be the right decision for the team at that point in time. It’s similar to my batting so, hopefully, that goes well,” he said.

As for tomorrow’s game, Pooran says the team is prepared for battle.

“I believe that we’re ready to play. We’ve been here a couple days now and getting used to the weather. We came here to be successful and get some wins on under our belt to get some points so, hopefully, things can go our way and we can do the right things,” said Pooran.

The match is expected to begin at 4:00 am in Jamaica, 5:00 am ECT.

Cricket fans to enjoy busy “summer of cricket” with visits by Bangladesh, India and New Zealand

30 days of West Indies Men’s international cricket from June 16 to August 21

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today confirmed the full match schedule for the West Indies Senior Men’s team from June 16 to August 21. This will see visits to the region by Bangladesh, India and New Zealand featuring all three formats of cricket.

The list of fixtures features 30 days of men’s international cricket comprising two Tests, nine CG United One-Day Internationals and 11 T20 Internationals at 10 world-class venues. This promises to be a bumper “summer of cricket” for fans across the Caribbean as well as for the West Indies diaspora in the United States of America, when West Indies and India make a return to the Broward County Cricket Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida for two T20Is against India.

Bangladesh will tour the Caribbean from June 16 to July 16 and will face West Indies in two Test matches in Antigua and St Lucia as part of the ICC World Test Championship. The two Tests will be followed by three T20Is and three CG United ODIs in Dominica and Guyana. The first two T20Is will see a return to international cricket at the fully refurbished Windsor Park, where international cricket is being hosted for the first time since the hurricane damage of 2017. The Bangladesh home series will conclude with the third T20I and then three CG United ODIs at the Guyana National Stadium.

India’s white-ball tour will commence on July 22 in Trinidad and Tobago with three CG United ODIs from July 22 to 27 at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, followed by five T20Is in three separate venues. The first T20I on Friday, July 29 will be historic as the first ever Men’s T20I to be played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in the south of Trinidad. The venue for the back-to-back second and third T20I matches is Warner Park, St Kitts, coinciding with Emancipation Day and Culturama holiday celebrations there. The eight-match India white ball tour concludes with an exciting weekend of back-to-back T20I fixtures at the Broward County Cricket Stadium in Lauderhill, Florida from August 6 and 7.

West Indies’ summer of cricket climaxes with New Zealand’s white-ball tour of the Caribbean, which has been rescheduled from 2020 following the COVID-19 pandemic. The BLACKCAPS will arrive in Jamaica to play three T20Is from Wednesday, August 10 to Sunday, August 14 before moving to Barbados for three day/night CG United ODIs. All nine CG United ODIs are part of the ICC ODI Super League with the West Indies aiming to qualify directly for the ICC World Cup in 2023.

“We are delighted to announce the match schedule for the men’s international calendar at home for the rest of the year. We know our supporters will be delighted with the news that the matches are being played all across the region as well as those living in the USA will be able to see their favourite players in action,” said Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI.

“This is the busiest year of cricket ever in the West Indies. In January we hosted Ireland and England in white ball formats, and also successfully staged the ICC Under 19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2022, which featured 16 teams traversing the region. We also witnessed the Apex Test Series, against England, which West Indies won in great style and with real fight.”

Grave added: “The upcoming summer is expected to feature 30 days of top-quality entertainment for our fans as we look ahead to hosting three teams of differing styles in all three formats, which will sure to whet the appetite. We are mindful that COVID-19 is still present, and we again want to thank the various Governments and other stakeholders who have worked with us to ensure the matches will be played in a safe environment.”

The Test matches against Bangladesh will be on sale initially with the white ball matches against Bangladesh, India and New Zealand being added in coming weeks. Tickets are available from just US$6.00 for the Test matches against Bangladesh and from US$10 for matches against New Zealand with a range of options from grounds admission to premium seats.

For the games against India in the Caribbean, tickets will start from US$20 for grounds admission. Ticket categories and prices for the games in Florida will be announced later in June. In addition to being able to choose and pay for your seats in advance, the service allows fans to save their purchased tickets to their device for ticket scanning at the venue, avoiding the need for queues and travel to the box offices. Fans registered for the WI Insider fanmail and on the WINDIES TICKETS service will receive promotional discounts across the games in the Caribbean.

The local fans being totally ignored when it comes T20's. At least in the BD and NZ series the start time is in the afternoon. But for the India series, it is a 9:30 am start! For a T20!

Anyways, looks 'cha-ching' time for CWI.

ST JOHN‘S, Antigua – The Coolidge Cricket Ground (CCG), home of West Indies Cricket, is entering the final phase for major development planning which will transform the ICC accredited facility into a truly state of the art cricket and cultural heritage centre. Infrastructural work and rehabilitation are expected to commence later this year.

CCG will become a world class centre of cricket with linkages to several other smaller cricket academies across the region. CCG will be able to adequately host training camps and player remedial work as well as stage international matches at all levels. This will include an Emerging Players Academy and the construction of an ultra-modern indoor/outdoor facility with several inputs for players’ preparation, including medical, training, fitness, and gym facilities.

“A strategic approach to master planning of the facility is well underway, and we are stepping into a new frontier as we seek to make CCG the 'flagship’ where players from the grassroots to the international level can develop and hone their technical and mental skills. We envision the CCG of the future as a truly world-class facility with all the amenities,” said Nelecia Yeates, General Manager of CCG.

Yeates added: “Fans attending matches at the ‘new CCG’ will also have an exceptional spectator experience. We will leave no stone unturned as we hold firm to the commitment and belief that all islands of the Caribbean can be the birthplace of greatness in our sport, both on the off the field.”

As part of the redevelopment project for the 20-acre facility, CCG has announced the appointment of a design collective consisting of CJC + Associates Inc., KSS Design Group Ltd and Melon Design Architecture to design and develop a transformational high-performance, world-class concept master plan.

“We were hugely impressed by the quality of all the responses for our Request for Proposals. But the level of information showcased in the design collective proposal was both impressive and inspiring. The winners have shown exceptional talent and promise, and aligned well with CWI’s vision to create a uniquely West Indian and world class cricket and heritage centre.” said Ricky Skerritt, President of CWI and Chairman of CCG.

“It is a huge achievement and opportunity, yet a humbling experience to be selected the winners, even more so with the high standard of entries as was expressed by the client,“ said Colin John Jenkins on behalf of the design collective (CJC+ Associates Inc., KSS Design Group Ltd and Melon Design Architecture).

Within the next few months, Jenkins and the design collective team are expected to submit draft master plans to CCG and CWI for final design and costing approval.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed the international retainer contracts for the West Indies Men’s and Women’s players for the 2022-2023 season. A total of 36 players have been offered contracts for the period – which runs from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.

This is in addition to 90 players across the region who are contracted to Territorial Board Franchise Squads.

The West Indies Men’s contracted player list sees fast bowler Jayden Seales, left-arm seamer Obed McCoy and allrounder Odean Smith awarded international retainer contracts for the first time. The West Indies Women’s contracted player list sees allrounders Mandy Mangru and Jannillea Glasgow along with batter Rashada Williams awarded international retainer contracts for the first time, all of which are development contracts.

For 2022-23, CWI has changed the Men’s retainer contract structure to offer player contracts across all formats of cricket, compared to specific red or white-ball contracts in previous years. The offer of retainer contracts to all players follows an Evaluation Period of performances from 1 April 2021 to 31 March 2022, which is also supported by statistics from the previous 2019 - 2020 Evaluation Period. This allows for all players to be appraised immediately after the Evaluation Period and provides a notice period before new contracts start on 1 July 2022. The system is designed to reward hard work and performance results.

West Indies Men’s Lead Selector, The Most Honourable Dr Desmond Haynes said: “Congratulations to all the players who have been offered contracts. We think this is a dynamic group, with the right mixture of experience and youthfulness to properly represent the people of the Caribbean. With general retainer contracts, it gives us a pool of talented and dedicated cricketers, who can take West Indies cricket forward in years to come.”

West Indies Women’s Lead Selector, Ann Browne-John said: “The selectors have placed a great focus on the young developing players because these are the ones who will help to build the team as we look towards the future. The panel believes that the combination of experienced players and the emerging players will give a good base as we continue to prepare teams for international matches and the T20 World Cup early next year.”

CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams stated: “I am delighted for all the players who have been offered retainers for the upcoming period. This represents a significant investment in the ongoing development of our international players whilst also ensuring our best players are available for selection.”

Listening to an interview with CWI Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams.

All I'll say is as long as Jimmy Adams remains in post, there's some hope for WI cricket.

He's been trying to create proper structures and enhance the capacity of the territorial boards to produce elite players. There's a HPC being built at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua (the ground once owned by Allan Stanford), and the coaching education system has been overhauled with Australian Chris Brabazon heading it. Emerging Players contracts have been awarded for the first time similar to Ramiz's project albeit an older 15-25 agegroup.

However long-term projects inevitably take several years to give fruit.

Kingston: West Indies batter John Campbell has been banned from playing cricket for a span of four years by the Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission or JADCO for violating the anti-doping rule.

The 29-year-old batter has represented the Windies side in 20 test matches, Six One-day Internationals, and two T20 International matches.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced today that Phil Simmons will be stepping down from his role as Head Coach of the West Indies Men’s team following the team’s exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup being played in Australia. His last assignment will be the upcoming two-Test series against Australia from 30 November to 12 December.

A three-member group of independent professionals has been named by Cricket West Indies (CWI) to conduct a comprehensive review of the early exit by the West Indies Men’s team from the recent ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia. CWI today announced that the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Review Group will undertake a holistic assessment of all aspects of the team’s preparation and performance at the global tournament.
The three members are: Brian Lara, the West Indies batting legend and current IPL T20 Head Coach; international cricket coach, South African Mickey Arthur; and Justice Patrick Thompson Jr., a High Court Judge at the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court; who will serve as Chair of the Group who have already begun their work.
The West Indies team failed to qualify for the Super12s phase (second round) after losing unexpectedly to lower ranked teams, Scotland and Ireland. The losses caused great disappointment and frustration among all West Indies cricket stakeholders. The Group B qualifier round was played at Bellerive Oval in Tasmania where the team achieved their only victory over Zimbabwe, a team that qualified ahead of West Indies by defeating both Scotland and Ireland.
The three-member panel will submit a Report to the CWI Board of Directors, with relevant insight and clear recommendations. It is also intended that this review will establish a process and template for future performance reviews. The Terms of Reference (TOR) are attached below.

In commenting on the appointments, CWI President Ricky Skerritt said: “CWI is fortunate to have such a knowledgeable and totally independent panel agree to serve West Indies Cricket under challenging circumstances. I am especially grateful for their commitment to lend some of their valuable time to this important review project. It is vital that players, coaches, administrators, and all of us who love West Indies cricket, recognize that creating a sustainable learning culture, throughout the organization, is a prerequisite for player growth and team improvement. Emotion-based and knee-jerk type decisions have failed CWI repeatedly in the past. I am confident that this independent World Cup review process will produce findings and learnings that should be of great benefit to our cricket system going forward.”

Pooran relinquishes white ball captaincy of the West Indies Men’s Team
Monday, 21 November 2022 — ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed today that Nicholas Pooran has decided to relinquish the white ball captaincy of the West Indies Men’s team following the team’s exit from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 tournament just completed in Australia.

Pooran said: “I have given the captaincy a great deal of thought since the enormous disappointment of the T20 World Cup. I took on the role with great pride and dedication and have given it absolutely everything over the past year.

“The T20 World Cup is something that must not define us and I will readily get involved in the upcoming reviews. And whilst it will be several months until we reconvene as a squad, I want to give CWI plenty of time to prepare for the matches against South Africa in March and beyond.”

He added: “This is not me giving up. I remain ambitious and still view the captaincy of West Indies cricket as an honour that is bestowed upon you. There is no doubt I remain fully committed to West Indies cricket and I look forward to providing my services as a senior player in a supportive role. By stepping down now as the West Indies white ball captain I believe it is in the best interests of the team and for me personally, as I need to concentrate on what I can deliver to the side as a player. I desperately want us to be successful and the most value I can give to the team is through fully focusing on the role of consistently scoring runs at crucial times.

“I am very thankful to CWI for the opportunity and faith shown in me and for the support that I have received by our devoted fans since taking the role, and to my teammates who have worked so hard as well. I know we have it in us to carry West Indies cricket forward and be proud.”

CWI Director of Cricket, Jimmy Adams thanked Pooran for his time leading the two teams.

Adams said: “On behalf of CWI I want to thank Nicholas for his time leading our white ball teams. Having spoken with him I know he remains fully committed to West Indies cricket and I am convinced he has a big role to play in our future.”

Last year and earlier this year, Pooran led the West Indies in the absence of Kieron Pollard, enjoying a T20 International (T20I) Series win against Australia at home (4-1). He was officially appointed West Indies Men’s white ball captain in May this year when Pollard stepped down. Overall, Pooran led the team in 17 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 23 T20Is, recording Series wins against the Netherlands (ODI 3-0) and Bangladesh (T20I 2-0).

The West Indies Men’s next white ball series is against South Africa in March 2023 (directly after the two Test Match Series) and consists of three ODIs and three T20Is.

West Indies Men’s Tour to South Africa 2023

Thursday, 16 March: 1st ODI at Buffalo Park, East London (day/night)
Saturday, 18 March: 2nd ODI at Buffalo Park, East London (day/night)
Tuesday, 21 March: 3rd ODI at JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom
Saturday, 25 March: 1st T20Is at SuperSport Park, Centurion
Sunday, 26 March: 2nd T20I at SuperSport Park, Centurion
Tuesday, 28 March: 3rd T20I at Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg (night)

Woah that's come out of the blue. Would've thought Pooran held on given he only took the captaincy in May.

His own form has dipped so he has struggled with the extra burden. There aren't lots of alternatives. Neverending WI cricket soap opera continues.

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies today paid tribute to David Murray, the former Barbados and West Indies wicket-keeper who passed away on Friday night. He was 72. Murray was the son of West Indies batting great Sir Everton Weekes. Murray’s son Ricky Hoyte, represented Barbados and West Indies ‘A’ Team as a wicket-keeper/batsman.

Murray’s first tour with the West Indies was in 1973 to England. He made his international debut in the second One-Day International by a West Indies men’s team, which featured Lance Gibbs, Roy Fredericks Rohan Kanhai and Clive Lloyd. His Test debut came in 1978 against Australia in Guyana. Overall, he played 19 Tests, 10 One-Day Internationals and also 114 first-class matches.

Ricky Skerritt, President of CWI paid tribute to Murray.

“On behalf of CWI I want to offer my sincere condolences to Ricky, and other members of David’s family and friends. David was a gifted wicket-keeper and a stylish middle-order batsman. He loved the game of cricket, and played with a smile on his face. He will be remembered as a member of the great West Indies squad which dominated world cricket for over a decade. Devoted West Indies Cricket fans still remember David’s fantastic glove work and footwork behind the stumps to Michael Holding and other members of the fearsome West Indies fast bowling attack of his time.”

Really sad to see West Indies down the gutters like this. Cricket needs a strong West Indies side to progress even more. They are to Cricket what Brazil has historically been to Football!

All the West Indies Rebel Tourists paid a heavy price but David Murray fared the worst. Not only like the rest was he banned from cricket, lost employment and social contacts - Murray got hooked onto cocaine.

In a 2013 CNN documentary on the rebel tour, he looked in horrific condition back then - just so thin and gaunt.

He'd literally be seen begging fans for money during Barbados Tests (his home ground). He was also estranged from his father Everton Weekes. I'm amazed he survived this long, and sad it ended this way.

RIP.

knew of the story but didn't know he was weekes' son. the rebels paid a heavy price for what they did, don't want to go into it but suffice to say it was pbly not worth it.

Friday, 23 December 2022 — ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced the appointment of Roland Butcher, as a Selector to the West Indies Men’s Senior & Youth Panels. Butcher is a former England batsman who also played for over 15 years in English County Cricket with Middlesex. His appointment was confirmed during a meeting of the CWI Board of Directors on Monday 19 December.

Butcher was delighted to accept the appointment, “It is a great honour and a privilege, to be given the opportunity to serve West Indies Cricket. I’m eager to get started to work alongside the other members of the selection panels as we look to ensure the growth and improvement in West Indies cricket at all levels.”

The West Indies Men’s Senior Panel is led by the Most Honorable Dr. Desmond Haynes and the Men’s Youth Panel is led by Robert Haynes. The third member of both panels is the respective Head Coach.

Butcher was the first Black cricketer to represent England in Test cricket when he debuted against West Indies in his native Barbados in 1981. He played three Tests and three One-Day Internationals. In his first-class career he played 277 matches and scored over 12,000 runs.

The Cricket West Indies’ (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel today announced the 15-member squad for the upcoming two-match Test Series in Zimbabwe, starting on 4 February. The Selection Panel recalled experienced fast bowler Shannon Gabriel, as well as left-arm spinners Gudakesh Motie and Jomel Warrican.
Gabriel has taken 161 wickets in 56 Tests, placing him joint 12th in the West Indies all-time wicket-takers list and more recently was the joint-leading wicket taker in the CG United Super50 Cup for the Trinidad and Tobago Red Force in November last year.
Gabriel’s last Test Match was against Sri Lanka in November 2021. Warrican’s last international appearance was also in Sri Lanka in December 2021 when he played in both matches in the Test Series. Motie made his Test debut for West Indies in Antigua in June 2022 in the first Test of the two-match Series victory against Bangladesh.
Jayden Seales is unavailable for selection following a knee injury and subsequent surgery; while Anderson Phillip is also unavailable due to injury.
Lead Selector, The Most Hon Dr Desmond Haynes said: “This is the start of the international calendar for 2023 and we will hope to start with a win. We appreciate it won’t be as easy assignment as Zimbabwe, like most other teams in world cricket, play very well on their home soil on pitches that will support their style of play.”
Haynes added: “We looked at the conditions we anticipate playing in, and have included two left-arm spinners who didn’t go to Australia in Motie and Warrican. With our fast bowlers, Seales has done extremely well for us since he started back in 2021, but with him unavailable we have decided that Gabriel would be best able to fill that role. He (Gabriel) is an experienced bowler who has been at the international level for over 10 years and has knowledge of the conditions in Zimbabwe when we won there in 2017.”
West Indies will play both Test matches at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, with the first Test running from 4 to 8 February, and the second match from 12 to 16 February. Ahead of the two-Test Series, West Indies will have a three-day warm-up match against a local side set for 28 to 30 January at Bulawayo Athletic Club. All matches start at 10am local time (4am Eastern Caribbean/3am Jamaica).
The last Test Series between Zimbabwe and the West Indies was also played at Queens Sports Club in October 2017. West Indies won the two-match Series 1-0, winning the first contest by 117 runs with the second Test ending in a draw.

Brian Lara to assist Cricket West Indies as Performance Mentor

Thursday, 26 January 2023 — ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced that former West Indies Captain and batting legend, Brian Lara, has agreed to assist CWI as a Performance Mentor – working across all international Teams and with input into the West Indies Academy.

Lara’s new role will be to support the various Head Coaches in providing players with tactical advice and improving their game sense, as well as working closely with the Director of Cricket on ICC World Cup Tournament strategic planning.

Jimmy Adams, CWI Director of Cricket said, “I am really looking forward to Brian making a significant contribution to our cricket system by providing invaluable guidance and advice to our players and coaches. We are confident that Brian will help to improve our high-performance mindset and strategic culture that will bring us more success on the field across all formats. Everyone is excited to have Brian involved in supporting our players.”

Brian Lara said, “Having spent time with the players and coaches in Australia and in discussions with CWI, I really believe that I can help the players with their mental approach to the game and with their tactics to be more successful. I'm looking forward to joining the group in Zimbabwe and the opportunity to work with other West Indies teams later in the year."

Lara’s first assignment will be with the West Indies Test squad. He has joined the Test squad in Zimbabwe where he will assist in the team’s preparations ahead of the first Test Match in Bulawayo on 4 February 2023.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced Shai Hope as the new captain of the West Indies Men’s One-Day International (ODI) team and Rovman Powell as the new captain of the West Indies Men’s T20 International (T20I) team. Hope, the wicketkeeper/batter and Powell, the batting allrounder, will take over from Nicholas Pooran, who stepped down from the positions last November following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

The first assignments for both captains will be the upcoming tour of South Africa in March where the West Indies face the Proteas in three ODIs and three T20Is from 16 to 28 March, following two matches in the ICC World Test Championship. Each captain will be heavily involved in strategy and planning leading up to the next ICC World Tournaments. In ODI cricket, the West Indies are likely to need to qualify for the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, with the qualifiers scheduled to be held in Zimbabwe in June. In T20I cricket, the West Indies will be hosting the next ICC T20 World Cup with the USA in June 2024.

Hope is selected as ODI captain after demonstrating strong leadership on and off the field and experiencing the vice-captain role over a number of Series since 2019. He became vice-captain for a second time in June 2022 and played his 100th ODI for the West Indies against India in July last year. Hope has played 104 ODIs and was recently selected in the ICC ODI Team of the Year for 2022.

Hope said: “It is a tremendous honour and privilege to be appointed captain of any West Indies team. To lead a team that is of such incredible significance not only to myself and my teammates but to our legion of fans the world over, is something one dreams of as a child. The rich history and legacy that our region and our brand of cricket is so famous and loved for, requires no intricate explanation. I would like to thank CWI for entrusting me with this immense opportunity. To navigate West Indies cricket in the right direction will be my fundamental priority and a task that I shall be unwaveringly committed to. With the support of my team-mates and our dedicated fans, I look forward to a long and fulfilling tenure as captain of the West Indies One-Day International team.”

CWI’s Selection Panel recommended Powell as T20I captain, referencing his demonstrated leadership acumen and tactical ability when acting as the West Indies T20I vice-captain and as captain for Jamaica in 2022 with double success in both regional competitions. He led Jamaica winning firstly the Caribbean Premier League with the Tallawahs in September before captaining the Jamaica Scorpions to the CG United Super50 Cup title in November.

Powell said: “I’m truly humbled and grateful to be given this amazing opportunity to lead the West Indies. For me, this a huge vote of confidence and I see this as the greatest honour of my career. To be asked to ‘carry the flag’ for the people of the Caribbean, there’s no bigger role in cricket in the region — a job previously held by some of the greatest servants of West Indies cricket. I also want to thank CWI for allowing me to guide the team in the coming years as we set sights on the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which we will be jointly hosting with the USA next year. I’m a passionate cricketer who believes in leading from the front and always giving 100 percent. “

Samuel Badree has been named as an Assistant Coach of the West Indies senior Men’s team for the upcoming six-match white ball series against South Africa. Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced that the former West Indies leg-spinner will join the squad for the three One-Day Internationals (ODI) and three T20 Internationals (T20I) from 16 to 28 March.

The West Indies have acted swiftly to their below-par performance at this year's ICC Women's T20 World Cup by announcing head coach, Caribbean legend and ICC Hall of Fame member Courtney Walsh, will not have his contract renewed.

Walsh took the top job in October of 2020 and led the West Indies to the semi-finals of the 2022 ICC Women's World Cup in New Zealand where they lost to eventual winners Australia.

But results in recent times have not gone to plan for Walsh and the West Indies, with the Caribbean side failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the recent T20 World Cup in South Africa.

The West Indies were beaten by England and India in their opening two matches of the tournament and could only finish third in their group despite ensuing victories against Ireland and Pakistan.

The disappointing T20 World Cup campaign led to a a review of the senior Women’s team performances and programme, and Cricket West Indies (CWI) announced that Walsh and assistant coaches Robert Samuels and Corey Collymore would not have their contracts renewed.

CWI Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams thanked the trio for the contributions they made and said the recruitment process for a new coach will commence in the coming weeks.

"We are very grateful for the contribution of Courtney and his technical team over the past two and a half years and we wish them all the best going forward," Adams said.

"CWI remains committed to our international women's programme and will now be focusing on recruiting a new Head Coach and technical support team.

"An interim technical support team will be put in place during the recruitment period."

The job with the West Indies was Walsh's first major coaching role at international level, although the 60-year-old had previously worked with Bangladesh as their bowling coach and as a talent scout and fast bowling coach in the IPL with Kings XI Punjab.

Walsh is well renowned as one of the best fast bowlers of all time, with the tall right-armer having amassed a total of 519 Test wickets throughout a distinguished international career with the West Indies.

The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Men’s Selection Panel today named the squad to participate in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 Qualifiers. The eight-team tournament will be played in Zimbabwe from 18 June, as the West Indies look to secure one of the two final places in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup to be played in India later this year.

Ahead of the qualifiers, the West Indies will have a three-match One Day International (ODI) Series against United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sharjah for which the Selection Panel also named the squad for those matches to be played on 5, 7 and 9 of June. These matches will form part of the preparations for the qualifiers.

CWI has given permission to players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to return to the Caribbean for a short break before arriving in Zimbabwe for the qualification tournament.

There are recalls for allrounder Keemo Paul and left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie, who last played in ODIs last July against India in Trinidad.

The squad for the three ODIs in Sharjah also includes four uncapped players – left-handed batter Alick Athanaze, as well as allrounders Kavem Hodge, Dominic Drakes, and Akeem Jordan.

Lead Selector, the Most Hon. Dr Desmond Haynes said: “Paul is a three-dimensional player, who can bowl the new ball effectively, he’s dynamic in the outfield and he can also make vital runs. He is now fully recovered from injury and with his skill-set we see him as a potential match-winner for us. Motie was excellent in the Test matches in the Zimbabwe earlier this year, where he took 19 wickets, and we anticipate similar conditions for the qualifiers. We believe he will again relish the chance to bowl in those conditions. He is also a capable batsman and good in the outfield. The team played well in South Africa earlier this year, when we drew the ODI Series 1-1 under the new captain. We were encouraged by that display and we expect them to continue to grow and create that synergy.”

Haynes added: “We see this as a crucial tournament as we look to secure one of the two places left in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. Therefore, we have selected a balanced team which we believe is well equipped to get the job done in the conditions we anticipate in Zimbabwe. It will be a challenging tournament, it will be intense and competitive, there is no doubt about that. In speaking to the players, they are fully aware of the job at hand. We are happy with the preparations and the mindset of the players, and everyone is clear about their roles in the squad.

“For the matches against the UAE in Sharjah, this presents a chance for some other players who are not in the squad for the qualifiers, to get an opportunity at the international level as we look to expose more players.”

Andre Coley and Daren Sammy named new West Indies Men’s Head Coaches

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced the appointments of the new Head Coaches for the West Indies Senior Men’s Teams. Andre Coley has been appointed Head Coach for the Test and ‘A’ Teams and Daren Sammy has been appointed the Head Coach for the white ball One Day International (ODI) and T20 International (T20I) Teams.

The new Head Coaches were selected following an open and transparent interview process, and the appointments were confirmed following the CWI Board of Directors meeting on Thursday 11 May.

Daren Sammy’s first assignment will be the three-match ODI Series against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in Sharjah in June, ahead of the ICC Men’s World Cup 2023 Qualifier tournament in Zimbabwe. Andre Coley’s first assignment will be the two-match Test Series against India in the Caribbean in July.

Sammy is a former West Indies captain in all three formats, who led the West Indies to the ICC T20 World Cup titles in 2012 and 2016. Since retirement, he has coached franchise teams in the Pakistan Super League and the Caribbean Premier League. Coley is a former Jamaica wicket-keeper/batsman who has coached at all levels in West Indies cricket. He was Interim Head Coach of the West Indies team on the tours of Zimbabwe and South Africa earlier this year with his most recent assignment as Head Coach of the West Indies Academy.

The 39-year-old Sammy said: “It will be a challenge but one that I’m ready for and excited about. I’m really looking forward to the opportunity, especially looking at the players we have and the impact that I believe I can have in the dressing room. I believe I will bring the same approach as I had as a player: the passion, the desire for success, and my undying love for West Indies cricket. When I look around there is an abundance of talent, and what I saw in South Africa in the white ball matches under new captains Shai Hope and Rovman Powell and the leadership provided by Andre Coley, there is great belief that we can do well. I’m looking forward to imparting my knowledge, my tactical acumen, my communication skills and my man-management skills. I get excited about putting the plans together and seeing the players execute them.”

Coley, 48, said: “I am honoured to be appointed West Indies Men’s Head Coach of the red-ball team after serving in the interim role on the Zimbabwe and South Africa tours. I am looking forward to the challenges ahead, as well as the opportunities as we sharpen our focus on moving up the Test rankings, and qualifying for the World Test Championship final in June 2025. I also look forward to working with all our stakeholders, deepening relationships and fostering a high-performance mindset. I am also excited to be working closely with the ‘A Team’ as we seek to optimise opportunities for teams to play competitive cricket outside of our first-class competition and giving players greater exposure to different conditions at the international level. I believe that my expertise in the use of analytics, my leadership style and technical knowledge along with collaborative efforts alongside Daren, will make a positive contribution to player development and team performances.”

In March, CWI announced that the role of Head Coach for the West Indies Senior Men’s Teams will be split into two separate positions, a decision made with reference to the recommendation by the independent three-member World Cup Review Group to consider splitting coaching duties as one factor to help improve team preparation.

Johnny Grave, CEO of CWI said: “We are delighted to announce the appointments of Andre and Daren to the positions of red ball and white ball Head Coaches of the Senior Men’s Teams. They are well equipped for their roles, and we are confident they will bring different perspectives, skills and real passion to the West Indies dressing room. The introduction of separate coaches signals the start of a new approach for the West Indies Men’s Teams, and we know it will enable greater focus on player communication, team planning and preparation to the benefit of our players and West Indies cricket.”

The recruitment process for a Head Coach of the West Indies Women’s team has commenced and the deadline for applications of Wednesday 17 May. Further information on the timing and process for appointing a new Head Coach of the West Indies Academy to replace Coley will be announced at a later date.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has been made aware that charges have been laid by the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU), involving West Indies player Devon Thomas.

CWI is not directly involved in the process but remains firm in denouncing corruption in cricket, and fully supports the ICC ACU in its efforts to uphold the integrity of the sport.

While the matter continues, CWI will not make any further comments in respect of these charges.

In collaboration with ICC and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA), CWI remains committed to sensitizing and educating our players and officials on anti-corruption in sports.

These uncountable T20 leagues and especially this T10 leagues are a paradise for fixers. Such a shame that some people watch them without realizing they are being taken for a ride.

Former West Indies captains Carl Hooper and Floyd Reifer have been named as Assistant Coaches in the white ball teams to work alongside new Head Coach Daren Sammy. James Franklin, the former New Zealand allrounder is the third Assistant Coach. They have joined the team ahead of the start of the upcoming three-match One Day International (ODI) series against United Arab Emirates (UAE).

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today announced that Johnson Charles has been named as the replacement for Gudakesh Motie in the 15-member squad for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier tournament to be played in Zimbabwe, starting on Sunday 18 June.

Left-arm spinner Motie has not recovered from a lower back injury. Charles recently made a return to the West Indies ODI team for the ongoing three match ODI series against United Arab Emirates in Sharjah. He scored 63 in the second match, his 50th ODI appearance, and was named Player of the Match.

Lead Selector, The Most Hon. Dr Desmond Haynes said: “We want to wish Motie the best as he continues his rehabilitation. He is one of the players who we expect to feature in West Indies cricket going forward, so we want to see him recover fully so he can participate when called upon.”

Haynes added: “When we discussed the replacement player, we looked at the possibility of another spinner in the squad. However, we felt it was better to go with Charles. He is experienced at the international level, he will add value to the team for what will be a very important tournament. He also has knowledge of the Zimbabwe conditions having played ODI matches there before, so we see him as the right man for the job at this stage.”

West Indies will arrive in Harare on Saturday 10 June, where they will prepare for the 10-team tournament. They have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Zimbabwe, Nepal, Netherlands and the USA.

West Indies face the USA in the opening Group A fixture on Sunday 18 June at Takashinga Cricket Club, followed by Nepal on Thursday 22 June at Harare Sports Club. West Indies meet Zimbabwe on Saturday 24 June at Harare Sports Club. The fourth preliminary match will be against the Netherlands on Monday 26 June.

Each side will play the other teams in their group once with the top three from the groups progressing to the Super Six stage from Thursday 29 June to Friday 7 July. The teams each play three Super Six matches against the sides they did not meet in the group stage.

All points won in the groups will be carried over to the Super Six stage apart from those gained against the bottom two from each group. The final will be played at Harare Sports Club on Sunday 9 July. The two finalists will both progress to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Cricket West Indies (CWI) acknowledges the receipt of a letter from the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) dated October 04, 2023, expressing concerns about the validity of the election for the post of Vice President held during the Annual General Meeting on March 25, 2023.

The Board is confident that the election process was fair and transparent, and was conducted with due regard for the rights, views and opinions of all shareholders of CWI Inc. Such was the case, that at the conclusion of the election process the elected Vice President received congratulations and commitment of full support from ALL shareholder members.

The Board of Cricket West Indies has thoroughly examined the matters raised by the Guyana Cricket Board and wishes to assure all stakeholders that the election for the post of Vice President was conducted in accordance with the Memorandum and Articles of Association of the organisation. Notwithstanding, the Board continues to engage with the GCB, seeking an amicable resolution to the matter. CWI values its relationship with all member boards and emphasizes the need for unity among the shareholders and by extension the cricketing community.

The Board implores the members of the GCB to put the interests of cricket above all else. CWI remains focused on its mission to promote and develop the sport in the region, and it is in the best interest of all parties to resolve this matter amicably and expediently.

I don’t believe it in my heart that the WI are not a top 10 level team anymore.

I bet if they played they could still smash some teams on these pitches

Let’s be honest, we are all missing the West Indies in this World Cup and probably this could be a reason the World Cup is also lacking some flair which the Windies always bring with them no matter what.

Now I understand they played a qualifier and Windies did not make it but then again it’s like ICC’s terrible 2007 World Cup format which allowed for early exit of Bharat and Pakistan.

The ICC should have found a way to ensure the Windies made it to the World Cup but the precisely found a way to remove them from it.

We all know West Indies were capable of bringing more damage to some of the top nations than Netherlands, Afghanistan or even Bangladesh, Sri Lanka.

If all that a World Cup qualifier does is allow an opportunity to some associate nations to eliminate Weat Indies or in future Sri Lanka etc , then I don’t see the point of having such qualifiers

Right, i think qualifiers should be among associate nations only. Teams having test status should always be there in world cups or else these kind of upsets in qualafiers will happen more often which ultimately do a lot of damage to the tournament's popularity.

It's not the same without WI even in their present state.

According to Dwayne Bravo, the facilities at Queens Park Oval in his native Trinidad haven't improved since the 90s. R Ashwin recently criticised the nets at Kensington Oval in Barbados, the premier ground in the Caribbean.

Domestic cricket is played to a lamentable standard with the quality of batsmanship at an all-time low. Open up any WI FC scorecard and the batting records are awful with so many struggling to average 40 forget 50. I heard the last time Barbados produced a Test batsman averaging 40 was Desmond Haynes who debuted in 1978 !

The current WI Board is fairly competent contrary to popular myth. They opened up an Academy in Antigua (ironically at Allan Stanford's old ground) and have invested in coaching, but like ICC they're a convening body made up of its members. Real change can only occur at island level and those island boards are more interested in petty politics than cricket development.

If all that a World Cup qualifier does is allow an opportunity to some associate nations to eliminate Weat Indies or in future Sri Lanka etc , then I don’t see the point of having such qualifiers
I hope Pakistan doesn’t qualify for the next World Cup, so I can rub it in ICC’s face how foolish organization they are.

strategically blended experience and new talent in their squads

Test cricket and especially WI Test cricket is finished so that's not an issue.

But they have a real chance of competing in the 2027 World Cup and Nicholas Pooran should feature in ODIs at least.

Braithwaite and Chanderpaul have killed Windies test cricket. The fans will not pay money to watch these guys and others to bore the pants off them

WI SL Zim, three test playing nations near to extinction will anyone hold ICC accountable

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has confirmed several organisational changes at the start of a significant year, that will see the launch of a new four-year strategic plan (2024-27) and the hosting of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June.

Johnny Grave, Chief Executive Officer of CWI, stated, “As an organization, we are dedicated to nurturing a culture of continuous evolution and improvement. We are steadfast in our pursuit to maximize our human capital, engage the best talent, and foster an environment where excellence thrives throughout the entire system.”

Grave also revealed that “We have concluded a thorough appraisal process, resulting in the realignment of responsibilities of some of our team members. As part of this process, while some contracts have reached a natural conclusion, including those of Dominic Warne, Commercial, Marketing and Communications Director, and Philip Spooner, Media and Public Relations Manager; both individuals will continue supporting us in the extremely important year ahead, in new roles working directly on the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June. We appreciate their contributions and dedication to our organization and remain committed to their involvement in this significant period.”

One of the components being assessed as part of the new cricket strategy is the selection system. CWI will further explore the strengthening of this area, building on the established policy from the 2019 selection review.

Miles Bascombe, Director of Cricket at CWI, emphasized the importance of this review, stating, "We are dedicated to refining our selection processes to better serve the needs of West Indies cricket. The ongoing evaluation and restructuring efforts are integral steps toward achieving this goal."

Bascombe elaborated that the review has resulted in some immediate changes in structure and personnel. “The review has been planned to coincide with the end of the contracts of some selectors to enable a seamless transition. CWI expresses its gratitude to Roland Butcher, Travis Dowlin, and Robert Haynes, whose tenures ended on 31 December 2023. Their dedication has been laudable, and CWI acknowledges their significant role with gratitude.”

CWI has taken the decision not to immediately replace these selectors until the completion of the review process. The remaining Lead Selectors shall continue to serve under their existing contracts with CWI.

Bascombe further added, “Coach Development Manager, Chris Brabazon, has also left the organisation to take up a new role back home in Australia. We are grateful for the tremendous contribution that Chris has made over the past 4 years, which has seen the introduction of a comprehensive range of coaching courses and accreditations, resulting in over 1,000 newly certified coaches in the region.”

CWI reaffirms its commitment to fostering an environment of continuous improvement and transparency within its operations. The recruitment process for a new Commercial Director and Coach Development Manager will begin imminently.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) today announced that Barbadian all-rounder Raymon Reifer has been cleared to resume bowling his slower balls and cutters after remedial footage of his action was sent to and cleared by Loughborough University.

Sammy looks at historic Nepal tour to refine T20 World Cup squad

West Indies will tour Nepal with an ‘A’ team, comprising T20 specialists, towards the end of April.

In a historic first, a West Indies representative side will tour Nepal for a five-game T20 series. Though this will be an ‘A’ tour, it will feature experienced T20 players such as Fabian Allen, Johnson Charles, Andre Fletcher and Hayden Walsh and will help both sides prepare for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

With several West Indies regulars including skipper Rovman Powell, Andre Russell, Nicholas Pooran, Kyle Mayers, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Alzarri Joseph and Shimron Hetmyer featuring in the Indian Premier League, this tour will be an opportunity for the remaining players to get some game-time ahead of the home T20 World Cup.

Darren Sammy seals a thriller against Australia
Darren Sammy was at his very best with the bat as West Indies won their second and final #WT20 warm-up match against Australia in front of a big crowd in Eden Gardens

West Indies white-ball coach Daren Sammy was confident that the five-game series against the Rhinos would help the side define roles and gauge their depth.

“From a coaching perspective, the Nepal tour couldn't have come at a more opportune time," Sammy said. "It offers us a chance to refine our [T20] World Cup squad, defining roles and personnel more clearly.

“Additionally, with nine players in the IPL, we can truly gauge and push the limits of our T20 team's depth.”

Nissan POTW: Roston Chase takes a stunner
The team will be captained by Roston Chase, who hasn’t sealed a regular place in the T20I setup. However, he impressed in his last outing in the format against Australia in Perth, where he scored a quickfire 37 to help West Indies to a formidable 220/6 and then picked 2/19 in a 37-run win for his side.

The 32-year-old was backed by West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes, who praised the all-rounder for his work ethic and leadership qualities.

“Chase has exhibited over the past few years an impressive work ethic and proven leadership qualities,” Haynes said in a statement, “No doubt since Chase made his T20I debut in October 2021, for West Indies against Bangladesh, he has continued to make considerable strides.”

West Indies A squad for the tour of Nepal: Roston Chase (c), Alick Athanaze (vc), Fabian Allen, Kadeem Alleyne, Joshua Bishop, Keacy Carty, Johnson Charles, Mark Deyal, Andre Fletcher, Matthew Forde, Obed McCoy, Gudakesh Motie, Keemo Paul, Oshane Thomas, Hayden Walsh

The A team will be coached by former West Indies international Floyd Reifer, with Rayon Griffith as his assistant.

West Indies are in Group C of the T20 World Cup, along with Uganda, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Afghanistan. They begin their campaign against PNG in Providence on June 2.

President Shallow Anticipates Fruitful Discussions at Caribbean Cricket Conference

Dr. Kishore Shallow, President of Cricket West Indies (CWI), eagerly anticipates the forthcoming Regional Conference on West Indies Cricket, slated for 25-26 April 2024 at the Hyatt Regency in Trinidad and Tobago. As stakeholders convene under the banner "Reinvigorating West Indies Cricket - A Symposium for Strategic Collaboration and Innovation," Dr. Shallow acknowledges the significant strides taken by CWI as it navigates a new four-year cycle and strategic plan.

CRICKET WEST INDIES LAUNCHES INITIATIVE TO INSPIRE YOUNG CRICKET ENTHUSIASTS

Cricket West Indies (CWI) proudly announces its latest initiative aimed at fostering a deeper appreciation for cricket among the youth of the Caribbean. As part of its corporate social responsibility efforts, CWI has generously provided 2,685 tickets to students and 412 tickets to teachers for the West Indies vs. South Africa series at Sabina Park in Jamaica. This initiative also includes tickets for 198 players from Underage Teams (U19, U17, U15), ensuring these young athletes have the chance to experience top-tier cricket action.

The Schools Ticketing Programme, a central element of this initiative, is designed to immerse young minds in the thrill of cricket, offering them the opportunity to witness international matches and develop a lasting passion for the sport. This programme will continue throughout the series, reflecting CWI's ongoing commitment to youth engagement and sports development.

Dr. Kishore Shallow, President of CWI, underscored the importance of this initiative in cultivating a strong cricket culture across the region.

"We are keen to help revitalize cricket in Jamaica. Introducing the children to cricket is vital for the future of the sport in Jamaica and the entire region. By bringing students to these matches, we are not only providing them with an enjoyable experience but also nurturing an appreciation and love for cricket that can grow with them,"
stated Dr. Shallow.

"This Schools Ticketing Programme initiative is about more than just watching a game; it's about creating a connection with the sport that can inspire future generations."
Dr. Donovan Bennett, President of the Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA), expressed his enthusiasm for the initiative and its potential impact.

"We are thrilled to collaborate with CWI for this Schools Ticketing Programme. This initiative promotes cricket and instils values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance in our young people," said Dr. Bennett. He added, "By exposing students to live cricket matches, they are getting a deeper understanding and appreciation for the game. This experience is invaluable for their personal and athletic development."

West Indies' Test problems not solved by money - Lara

West Indies great Brian Lara does not think their current issues in Test cricket would be resolved by solely investing more money.

They are eighth in the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Test rankings, having been a dominant force in the 1980s when they set a then-record 11 consecutive Test victories.

In contrast they failed to win any of their three Test series in 2023, but did pick up their first red-ball win in Australia since 1997 earlier this year.

"If you put 100 million, 200 million dollars into the West Indies' bank account, is it going to change the way we play the game? I'm not sure," Lara told BBC World Service's Stumped podcast.

"We are not harnessing the talent that we have."

A host of Windies players, such as Nicholas Pooran and Shai Hope, are opting to play just white-ball cricket internationally, which enables them to play in franchise leagues across the world.

Other sports, such as athletics, are also big across the different nations in the Caribbean, which affects the talent pool available.

"Obviously, cricket has been diluted by the number of different sports and different opportunities for kids, but I still believe that corporate West Indies have got to get involved," said Lara.

"The West Indies Cricket Board hasn't done the right job in attracting these sponsors to ensure that at least grassroots, but also the academy, all the different things, the facilities, are up to standard. I think these things are very, very important."

Their current top five in the Test against England at Lord's had played 96 Tests between them prior to the game starting, but captain Kraigg Brathwaite accounted for 89 of those appearances.

In comparison England's top five had played in 259 Tests.

Cricket West Indies to Appeal Court Ruling on Election of Vice President Azim Bassarath

ST. JOHN'S, ANTIGUA - In a case filed by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) in the High Court of Guyana challenging the election of Mr Azim Bassarath as Vice President of the Cricket West Indies, the Court ruled this morning in favour of the GCB.

The case was brought against Cricket West Indies Inc., Mr Bassarath, and Mr Gregory Nicholls, the Returning Officer, all of whom were named as Respondents in the Action. Through Counsel, the Respondents contended that the Court was without jurisdiction to hear the matter and that disputes of this nature should be resolved through arbitration. On the contrary, the Court decided it had jurisdiction and granted the orders sought by the GCB.

The respondents respectfully differ with the Court's ruling. Consequently, CWI has instructed its legal team to immediately file an appeal and will await the decision of the appellate Court.

The election of Mr Bassarath as CWI Vice President was held at the 24th Annual General Meeting in Antigua on March 25, 2023. Mr Bassarath was unopposed, and gained six votes with two voting against, while four abstained.

Windies have had some noticeable achievements in the recent past. That famous Australia test victory. T20 world cup performance. They certainly are doing better when it comes to real game.

Windies have had some noticeable achievements in the recent past. That famous Australia test victory. T20 world cup performance. They certainly are doing better when it comes to real game.

They didn't do anything extraordinary in World T20. Didn't reach semi.

That Australia victory was fluke. They lost 0-3 in England after that.

ST. JOHN’S, ANTIGUA– Cricket West Indies (CWI) will hold an election for the Vice President on September 20, 2024. This follows the recent judicial decision from the High Court of Guyana regarding the Vice President's election, which has led to Mr. Azim Bassarath vacating the position.

At the close of nominations, Mr. Bassarath is the sole candidate, having been nominated by the Jamaica Cricket Association and Leeward Islands Cricket Board. The nominations were circulated as customary, and every territorial board, which constitutes the shareholders, was adequately notified. CWI is being guided by its Articles of Association in conducting this election to ensure the process is handled with the highest standards of democratic principles and transparency.

Jamaica Poised for Historic Pink-Ball Test Pending Sabina Park Light Upgrades

Jamaica’s cricket fans could be treated to seven nights of international cricket this July when Australia arrives for a Test match and two T20 Internationals, but that excitement hinges on the completion of crucial lighting upgrades at Sabina Park.

Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) President Dr. Donovan Bennett has revealed that the upcoming West Indies vs Australia Test match, scheduled for July 12-16, 2025, could mark Jamaica’s first-ever pink-ball Test match. This would be only the second pink-ball Test in the Caribbean, following the 2018 encounter between the West Indies and Sri Lanka at Kensington Oval in Barbados.

Dr. Bennett spoke to Sportsmax.TV, emphasizing the significance of upgrading Sabina Park’s lights, a move that would allow day-night Test cricket to become a reality in Jamaica.

“The match against Australia may be a pink-ball game. That is what is happening right now,” Dr. Bennett stated.

“So, if the Test match lasts as we hope it would, then we would have seven nights of cricket in Jamaica. I am a little excited about that—we have never had a pink-ball game.”

The decision to introduce a pink-ball Test would not only enhance fan engagement but also ensure prime-time television coverage, potentially attracting larger audiences both at the stadium and worldwide.

Dr. Bennett also highlighted the importance of crowd attendance, stating that Cricket West Indies (CWI) is currently assessing fan turnout across the Caribbean.

“One of the things that the CWI is looking at right now is an assessment of crowd sizes across the Caribbean, because there has been a tendency for some countries not to support the game at all. There is a Test match and two people turn up. So you may very well find that certain territories may end up with difficulty getting international games because of the response of the population.”

With Australia’s visit bringing a marquee Test match followed by T20Is on July 20 and 22, Dr. Bennett is hopeful that an energized Jamaican crowd will help secure the nation’s place as a prime destination for future international fixtures.

The JCA has been actively working to enhance Sabina Park’s infrastructure, starting with a USD$1 million high-definition scoreboard, donated by the Indian government. An Indian contractor is expected to arrive this week to begin the installation, which will significantly improve the viewing experience for both local spectators and global audiences watching on television.

The most pressing upgrade, however, is the lighting system, which is estimated to cost JMD$75 million (USD $500,000). Dr. Bennett confirmed that efforts to secure funding and complete the installation are progressing, raising optimism that Jamaica will indeed host its first-ever pink-ball Test match this July.

If all goes according to plan, Sabina Park could become the centre-piece of Caribbean cricket this summer, setting the stage for a historic and unforgettable series against Australia.
