Who would have thought that day was decisive, the moment, the time, when Miandad jumped like monkey to mock Kiran More at Sydney 92 World cup group stage match.
India finally emerged out of the ghosts of Imran-Miandad-Wasim Akram troika, which had bamboozled them from 1986-1991 non-stop. It was only 4 months ago in Sharjah Cup 1991 ( oct) where Indians thought they have finally got gradual grip on mighty Pakistan after beating them by 60 runs and then closely losing 2nd game in final over by 4 runs to Pakistan. Aaquib javed and Zahid Fazal heroics put a lid on indian celebrations in final few days later. But it was the beginning.
India got out of the shadows of Imran. Whom they never defeated in 14 tests and won only 3 odi’s prior to Sydney 92.
But collapse started With Kiran More antics and Miandad jumps. We lost concentration that day, 7 attempts and 27 years later, still we are yawning.

Dont think if the Kiran More incident has anything to do with our poor show against India.

Pakistan had owned India most of the 90s anyway (except for a handful of WC games).

1986 to 1991 was when the H2H went totally in favor of Pakistan. Very surprising that India led the ODI H2H (8-6) till 1985 and then in the next 6 years it was a beatdown, we also happened to play many many ODIs in that time frame. 1992 Sydney did change the tide and our 90s record wasn't as bad, if you take our weak team into account. The WC and WT20 streaks are growing but the real culprits are 90s Pakistani players. No way should that Indian team have been allowed wins in 1992, 1996 and 1999. By the time 2003 Centurion came both teams were equal in strength and India was in ascendancy while the golden generation of PCT was close to retirement.

Sir my article is very deep, only Ravi Shastri ever discussed and understood it.
Kiran More got on to the nerves of Miandad that evening, it was perhaps the only time an indian got on to the nerves of Miandad. Aamer Sohail followed the trend in 96 against Prasad. These things ultimately define legendary stories.
India beat pakiatan in Sahara cup 4-1 in 1997, won independence cup
In dhaka 1998, chased 315 in 48 overs. Kanitker/Saqlain. Kumble 10 wickets.
Lets not get carried away that 1990’s was all ours.
They knocked us out in 96 world cup. We did not.

I have photographic memory. In my country people completely ignore that 1990’s was not 100% in Pakistan’s favor.
Tide changed in 1991 Sharjah Cup.
Imran khan’s team had not lost an ODI v India since early 1988. But Tendulkarz blitz changed it in 1991 1st match. Pakistan lost by 60 runs, Imran was very surprised. 2nd game, India v narrowly lost by 4 runs. Again Imran was surprised. Then Sydney 92 happened.
A close game in 1994 Australasia cup final, then India won Asia Cup in 1995. Then Bangalore 96, then 4-1? Sahara Cup win then 1998 dhaka win.
Yes Pakiatan was very good and tasted more wins in 1990’s but it was not 70% pakistan. It was only 60/40 even in 1990’s. They knocked Pakistan out of world cup. This shall not be ignored.

Actually the 90s (post 1992 WC to be precise) H2H was closer, the real dent to H2H happened in 1986-1991 period. We were a poor team in mid/late 90s but managed to inflict many losses on Pakistan which wasn't the case at all in late 80s.

Indo-Pak ODI rivalry can be divided into 5 phases:

1. Till end of 1985- India led H2H 8-6, may not be a complete surprise because we were a very good ODI team initially with a World Cup (83) and World Championship of Cricket Trophy (85).

2. 1986-1992- Pakistan steamrolled India, we played many matches which had a telling impact on overall H2H. The real shift in tide happened with Miandad's last ball six in Sharjah I think.

3. 1992 Sydney -2003 Centurion- Pakistan had the edge but it wasn't a one way street, both teams traded blows with Pakistan being ahead on count.

4. 2003 Centurion till end of decade- India had the small edge but Pakistan inflicted many losses, close contest with advantage India.

5. 2010s- Reversal of (1986-1992) but not many matches between the 2 countries.

Yeah its a popular myth that Pakistan completely dominated India in 90s. Your posts are very accurate, I checked the list of matches and they agree with your version of 60:40 split, maybe even 55-45 if you leave out the 90s matches before Sydney WC clash. However it was like 80:20 split in favor of Pakistan in late 80s.

It's just a fact that India have grown stronger by every year since early 2000s while we have declined gradually.
The only time Pak and India were almost equally good was way back in 2005-07.
India flourished under Dhoni and now Kohli, plus thanks to their good system, while Pakistan have declined under consistent captaincy changes since 2008 plus incompetence of the board and poor cricketing system.

Eden Gardens Calcutta. 1996 world cup
Tendulkar/Kaluwitharana.
Azharuddinz team was 1 hour of good cricket away to play world cup final in Lahore.
India won a tri series tournament in 1996 v South Africa and Aus. Titans cup.
Hero Cup 1993. Sachin last over.
You were fighters even in 1990’s cheer up

If their was a curse or karma I would say it was from the 1996 World Cup when Aamir Sohail pointed at the boundary and was showing off in front of Indian bowler prasad who clean bowled him the next ball . It goes to show that one you need to be humble and two never lose sight of the match don't get carried away I'm sure once he bowled him he cursed him as well lol
