India’s squad for WTC Final and Test series against England announced

The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked the Indian squad for the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final and the five-match Test series against England.

Team India’s first stop will be in Southampton where they play New Zealand to decide the first champion of the Test format. Following their 3-1 win against England at home, India finished as the No. 1 side with 72.2 percentage points and booked their place in the final.

India’s squad: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Md. Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, KL Rahul (subject to fitness clearance), Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper; subject to fitness clearance).

Standby players: Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan, Arzan Nagwaswalla

The BCCI on Friday picked a strong 20-member squad for India's tour of England which starts next month. India will travel to England for a four-month long tour, which will begin with the World Test Championship final against New Zealand on June 18, before facing the hosts in a five-Test series.

The 20-member squad marks the return of star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and batsman Hanuma Vihari, who, due to their respective injuries had to miss the four-Test series against England at home. Besides, the BCCI has also picked four stand-by players in Bengal batsman Abhimanyu Easwaran, fast bowler Prasidh Krishna, Avesh Khan and Arzan Nagwaswalla.

"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has picked the Indian squad for the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final and the five-match Test series against England," the BCCI said in a statement.

"Team India’s first stop will be in Southampton where they play New Zealand to decide the first champion of the Test format. Following their 3-1 win against England at home, India finished as the No. 1 side with 72.2 percentage points and booked their place in the final."

Jadeja sustained a finger injury during the third Test against Australia in Sydney in January this year and was subsequently ruled out for both Test and limited-overs leg of the India-England series. He returned to action in the IPL 2021 for the Chennai Super Kings and by the time the tournament was suspended indefinitely, the all-rounder had scored 131 runs and taken six wickets from seven matches, including 3/13 against Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Vihari had pulled his hamstring in Sydney, which meant that like Jadeja, he took wasn't fit for the home Tests against England. Vihari played the Vijay Hazare Trophy but without much success - his 65 against Vidarbha being his only double-digit score in six innings for Andhra. He then went to England to play County cricket for Warwickshire, producing scores of 0 and 8 against Nottinghamshire, 32 and 52 against Essex and 8 and 0 against Durham.

The long tour will also see Mohammed Shami return to action for India. Shami too was injured as early as the Adelaide Test and missed the next four months before appearing in full fitness for the Punjab Kings in the IPL, where he troubled his India captain Kohli in a fiery opening spell.

Surprisingly, there was no place for youngster Prithvi Shaw in a squad already comprising three opening batsmen in Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal. KL Rahul has also been named part of the squad but his availability will depend on how he recovers following the surgery for acute appendicitis. Ever since he was sidelined from the Adelaide Test against Australia, Shaw has been in rollicking form, scoring over 800 runs in the Vijay Hazare Trophy - becoming the first batsman to do so - and then setting the IPL on fire, scoring 308 runs from eight matches with two half-centuries.

There was also no place for all-rounder Hardik Pandya and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav either, with Axar Patel being named as the third spinner after his heroics in the home series against England.

These six games are going to be the greatest challenge for this new India.

The only front India hasn't cleared is that of the swinging/seaming pitches of NZ and Eng so therefore if they can achieve a series win against England than it is without any doubt that Virat Kohli's India is the GOAT Asian test team and probably the second or third greatest test team of all time.

These are difficult times. Not easy for Indian players, it could eventually affect their mental health.

India ain't winning world test championship.
I expect England to whitewash them or India might sneak a win. It's gonna be 5-0 or 4-1 in favour of England. It's always fun watching India in England.

Either India's not winning any matches this tour or they'll win every match this tour. There's no in between scenario

Some excellent tests lined up. Should be a fun watch.

Also, speaking of lined up, the ECB administrators will be lined up for Sky and Disney to pay the big $$$. I am sure this is a blockbuster season for the ECB.

The ICC on the other hand am not sure how much they will make from the WTC final.

Rahul Dravid predicts 3-2 scoreline in India's 'best chance' to win in England

"I really do think India have a very good chance this time. There's no question about England's bowling. Whatever bowling attack England put on the park, especially their seam-bowling attack, is going to be fantastic. They have a lot of players to pick and choose from and that's going to be terrific"

"But if you look at their top six or top seven, you really think of one great batsman, a world-class batsman who is Joe Root. Obviously, Ben Stokes is another one, who is a good all-rounder, but for some reason Ravichandran Ashwin seems to do well against him. And that should be an interesting contest. I know he's done well against Stokes in India, but it'll still be an interesting subplot to the series"

"But I just think India will be well-prepared, have the confidence from Australia, there's lot of belief in the squad. A couple of players have been to England a few times, there's a lot of experience in the batting order this time around, so this is probably our best chance, maybe say 3-2 to India. I think India will play really well in England this time. It's a great opportunity we've got. After the WTC final, they're going to be in England for a whole month before the Test series starts. I don't think any team has had that kind of time to prepare for a Test series as India will have this time, so that surely should be a great advantage"

"It does seem balanced. It's a 20-member squad. The only other one who could have merited selection would've been Kuldeep Yadav, but he's fallen away over the last little bit. Also, with the kind of recent performances from Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, they're clear about the kind of balance they want in the squad."

"With both Ashwin and Jadeja adding value with the bat and having like-for-like replacements in Axar and Washy, they're clear about the direction they want to take. It lengthens their batting and all four finger spinners here allows them to do that. The make-up of the squad tells me they know their best XI even before they leave from here."

Hold on Dravid...
Ganguly announced "India is supposed to go to Sri Lanka for 3 ODI and 5 T20 in July".

That means Team will travel Lank after WTC final.

Not possible because the first test in England starts from 4th August.

It will be a 'B' team and Pandya will probably make his captaincy debut in that series :inti

Iyer won't be fit by then. Samson or Pandey will play instead. Natrajan should be available by then too.

I think we might see some of the guys in test squad( who are guaranteed to not start) being a part of this series and then reach England around July-end and become available from 2nd test onwards.

If England actually play their strongest side throughout the series, I think they beat us quite convincingly. But I also believe we beat NZ in the WC final which may be meaningless now...

Expecting England to dish out some green mambas. Might not be a very memorable series for India if that happens.

SL series depends upon the quarantine situation. May not happen at all considering second and third waves.

I think England will rule on the early summer seamers but Oval and OT will take spin with less seam movement and India will come back into it. Then again, dew comes into effect in September and swing will be a factor at OT.

Hard to call this one - I reckon 2-2 or 3-2 England.

Probably because there is a shift to "bowler who can bat" now

Kuldeep got shorthanded to Ahmedabad bully Axar Patel. Kuldeep is a better bowler and should have been in the squad ahead of him. The other 3 I understand but Axar's definitely got lucky here.

Trent Bridge will be green, as it always is. Lord’s a slow seamer as it always is. Headingley a good true wicket. Oval and OT hard early on and taking spin later.

Much depends on the weather. You cannot tell from one week to the next.

Even though Team India is heading to Southampton with a star-studded squad for the final of the ICC World Test Championship, former Pakistan leg-spinner Danish Kaneria has expressed his reservations about the selection of only finger spinners. Kaneria has come up with an interesting observation about the recently announced squad of the Kohli-led side for the World Test Championship final against Kane Williamson's New Zealand.

Famous for his spin wizardry in the longest and oldest format of the game, Kaneria has highlighted that India's squad doesn't feature a wrist-spinner. The former Pakistan spinner admitted that India have selected quite a strong team for their mouth-watering clash against the Black Caps. Kaneria also stressed that the Kohli-led squad only features finger spinners - Ravichandran Ashwin, Washington Sundar, Axsar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja.

"India has selected quite a strong team. Overall, their squad of is good. But the thing to note is that they have not selected a wrist spinner. They have finger spinners -- Ashwin, Washington Sundar, Axsar Patel and Ravindra Jadeja but they don't have a wrist spinner, a right arm leg spinner," Kaneria told news agency PTI.

'Virat Kohli always struggles against a leg-spinner'

Kaneria, who has played for English county team Essex in his bitter-sweet career, opined that leg spinners are useful on English pitches especially when there are seam conditions. Talking about the impactful combo of finger spinner and wrist spinners in a playing XI, the former Pakistani cricketer called for Rahul Chahar's inclusion into the Test squad. Kaneria also highlighted Kohli's struggles against leg spinners to support his statement.

"Rahul Chahar, his height, the way he delivers the ball, he should have been in the team. New Zealand has Ish Sodhi, a tall leg spinner and Virat Kohli always struggles against a leg spinner as we saw it with (Adam) Zampa. So, I feel if there is a place open for a leg spinner then Chahar, who has played for Mumbai Indians and India and has performed well, has googly, flipper, and leg-spin, could have been useful," he added.

3-1 to eng with one drawn....
But as an Indian supporter I would be happy to be proven wrong...
VK looses more tosses than he wins. At least one wicket will be an extension of the outfield. I don't have confidence in Hitman and Gill to fight out a session.
The rest of the batting - Jinks is a hit or miss-very inconsistent. VK - he needs to fire big time - just like its been for long part of carreer. Che Pu - steady guy - will given you at least two big innings....
ITs the support batting of Vihari that I feel will be his make or break series. I feel he has the game to thrive in Eng.

Then you have the X factor of PAnt Jads and Ashwin with the bat.
It still does not fill me with confidence after what we saw in 2018.
Happy to be proven wrong

5-0 india, unless one of tests is rained off. This is GOAT indian team and only losing toss of a coin can stop them winning all 5 games ;)

3-2 or 4-1 to England. It is their home ground after all and Indian batsmen find seaming conditions difficult.
My eyes are on Che Pujara, VK and Gill this series.

England ought to go with grass-tops in these conditions where Anderson and Broad will run through India.

It would be a mistake to give India conditions where they could pose a threat with their spinners.

Most subcontinent batsmen can't play the moving ball well, and so I think England are strong favorites in this encounter.

Kohli, Pujara, and Pant will need to stand up if India are to compete throughout this series. India's openers are likely to score cheaply throughout the series, so it is the middle order which will need to put together 300-ish consistently.

If India can miraculously defy the odds and win the series, it will be a testament that we are watching perhaps the greatest Asian test side, perhaps the greatest test side ever if they win convincingly.

If they lose, however, it will show that they are still unable to compete well in seaming/swinging conditions, and it will be the only obstacle standing in their way from truly becoming one of the greatest test teams in the history of the sport.

For a cricket lover, this as good as it gets!

An epic dual between two of the most prominent forces in world cricket today.

... and then of course there are 5 tests with England :kapil

This is the best chance India has in last decade or so to win a series in Eng. Ind has quite a few batsmen and bowlers near the peak of their careers (Yes some might be a bit past it).

There is just one batsman in the whole English lineup with an average of 40+ (Joe Root) in tests. Eng's openers arent that experienced and are still trying to find their feet at international level while middle order also isnt consistent enough. Yes Stokes and Buttler can be dangerous on their days but their consistency isn't great as is reflected by their averages and atleast a couple of spots in the middle without much clarity or experience.

Anderson and Broad are still handful in English conditions and Archer, Woakes can be pretty decent support bowlers. Unless Moen Ali is selected and he finds the form he had in 2018 series with the ball, the spin department can be just deemed average/decent.

If India struggles to take this opportunity of a win in Eng, they will only have themselves to blame and it will count as a big miss because by the next tour of Eng things can be potentially pretty different for both sides in terms of overall experience and players touching or around their peak.

Even last time they just had Joe root and Cook who avgd 40+ and cook was nowhere near his best, actually this english team is better than the team we faced in 2018, they now have Archer and a much better spinner than Adil Rashid(leach) also Stokes and Buttler are in the form of their life.

India are good but is kohli as good now as he was when they last toured England. If havent seen pujara rohit rahane do too well against swing and seam so they'll have to step up big time. If they do then India are definitely in with a chance. Bowling attack is very potent.

Ollie Pope in the 2021 County Championship so far

Runs: 485
Hundreds: 2
Average: 69.28
Strike rate: 78.99
High score: 245

Jofra Archer is firing on his return to the Sussex side! The England fast bowler has taken two early wickets and Kent are 11-2!

I honestly don’t think this Indian side is that good. They can’t play the swinging ball. They lost 1-4 last time against arguably the weakest England batting line in history, which is stronger now than it was.

If the pitches dont offer much seam movement, India will compete regardless of whether movement through the air. If we get pitches like the ones seen last season, it would be better for us.

India will win the WTC. England like most times will easily do them at home convincingly. England will naturally prepare pitches to suit their own side. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Indias best chance was the 2018 series where they were a bit unlucky.

Englands seam bowling is now stronger than ever. Ollie Robinson(fast bowler) will be a surprise package.

I expect the england batsmen to be better in their own conditions.
But the battle will ultimately be between the bowlers of both sides

Does it occur to you that it is the other way round - bowlers come through that suit the pitches. That’s why we have so few top quicks and spinners.

Nothing wrong with it. England are perfectly capable of making wickets that are flat with minimal seam movement but their own ex players have pointed out the extent to which pitches have been prepared for the home team and even a few like Jimmy have acknowledged this fact.

It's like when England prepared flat tracks to negate Steyn/Phikander/Morkel but still lost because that SA was clearly superior side. If India are better, they should win regardless of conditions.

How? Shave the wicket?

Wouldn’t it have been more sensible to have made three green seamers and back Anderson? Or spinning tracks for Swann, not that this is possible in England. Making flat tracks would just hamstring their own bowlers.

You can’t have it both ways.

England took a gamble. A green wicket with Philander and Steyn in the attack? They were bowling teams out in double figures at that time. Unfortunately, SA were a superior batting side as well with Smith, AB, Amla, Kallis forming a powerful batting lineup

Wonder if this is Jimmy's swansong, or at least his final Test series at home. England have good depth with Ollie Robinson emerging, and I still don't think we've seen the best of Ollie Stone yet. India's nemesis Sam Curran I'm sure will make an appearance too.

The question as ever is with England's batting. I don't think it's wise for England to roll out green mambas given their habit of batting collapses and India's seam bowling strength. Just make normal English pitches and let the Dukes do its thing.

It’s a common misconception that green wickets help quicks. They help medium pacers.

A gamble on not being able to bowl SA out either?

Without dry wickets for Swann and Monty either?

I don’t buy it.

Philander is not a quick. He was, at the time, the deadliest bowler on a green pitch.

Of course you dont buy it . You would even deny the fact that 2017/2018/2019 had pitches that seamed more than any season in England since 2006 despite the data clearly showing that and would claim that it was the weather responsible for it.

SA were the best team in all conditions. Wouldn't have mattered whether it was dry, green or flat.

So apparently ECB makes seamers recently but dead ones in 2012 instead of seamers or turners therefore hamstringing all their own bowlers. Given that England had a clear advantage in spin wouldn’t it have made sense to make dry wickets for Swann? But he didn’t get them because groundsmen in England can’t make dry wickets. Only prolonged sunshine does that.

If there is more seam movement generally these days I would put it down to the recent Duke batches, Though 2018 was rainy.

The wickets are pretty much the same at a given ground year in year out with minor variations depending on the recent weather. Unless we get a really hot summer like 1976 and 1995 when they all go dead.

TB is a green top. Lord’s a slow seamer. Headingley used to be a minefield but has been relayed and is the best batting strip. Though it tends to be a swing ground due to the northern climate. OT and Oval have a bit of bounce early then take spin later.

So I can predict now who will win on which ground. There will be no draws because neither side can bat.

After the abrupt ending of the IPL 2021 edition, due to the Covid-19 virus breaching the bio-bubbles of four teams, the BCCI is leaving no stone unturned in terms of safety and quarantine rules for Team India's scheduled departure to the United Kingdom. The UK tour will be a very lengthy and grueling one, involving the ICC World Test Championship final -- versus New Zealand -- and five Tests against England.

As per several reports, it has been understood that the Indian cricket board has asked the UK-bound Virat Kohli-led Team India players to assemble in Mumbai on May 19. The players will undergo as many as 3 RT-PCR tests at their respective homes before joining the bio-bubble for a 14-day mandatory quarantine period prior to their departure.

Speaking to ANI, sources in the know of the entire development said, "The players will be undergoing three RT-PCR tests at their homes, and once they return negative tests, they will be assembling in Mumbai on May 19. Everyone in the contingent will be undergoing 14-day quarantine in India before they leave for the UK on June 2."

Not only the players, but their family members will also have to undergo several rounds of tests, as they will also be accompanying them to the UK.

As BCCI has huge money at stake due to the IPL 14's indefinite postponement, following the Covid-19 crisis in four camps, it is understood that the board isn't willing to take any chances for its players, which can have adverse effects on the UK tour. Earlier, it was also revealed that the board has made it clear to the cricketers that it will not be booking chartered flights for the ones who test positive on arrival in Mumbai.

"The players have been informed to consider their tour over if they are found positive on their arrival in Mumbai as BCCI will not arrange another charter flight for any cricketer,” The Indian Express quoted a source as saying.

Kohli & Co. are set to lock horns with New Zealand in the WTC final, on June 18 in Southampton, which will be followed by a five-match Test series against Joe Root-led England, from August-September. India defeated England, 3-1, in the four Tests -- at home -- prior to IPL 2021.

India's Squad: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (Captain), Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohd. Shami, Md. Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, KL Rahul (subject to fitness clearance), Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper; subject to fitness clearance).

True. Even Pakistan were getting thrashed there last year and they usually do well there. I dont harboured much hope for our team .

The current Pak team was always gonna lose against this English side. I just can't see India win this series against England away from home.

Team India batsmen need to score big in Test series against England

The Indian team management is looking at new training methods to reverse trend of batsmen failing to get tall scores in England

MUMBAI: While it's always about picking 20 wickets to win a Test match, putting those many runs on the board to allow bowlers the cushion of working on those wickets is also essential.

In India's last three Test wins in England - Nottingham (2007 & 2018) and Lord's (2014) - runs on the board allowed bowlers to engineer victory. In 2007, Zaheer Khan got to bowl a total of 48 overs for his magnificent nine-wicket Test haul, but the five top-order batsmen got half-centuries in the first innings and India posted 481 runs.

In 2014, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and got six and seven-wicket hauls respectively in the first and second innings, but it was also thanks to 's first-innings century that took India past 250. Three half-centuries and two near-half-centuries in the second innings set England a 366-run target.

In 2018, Jasprit Bumrah took his time to bowl 29 overs and get a five-wicket haul but India took a big first innings lead while 's century in the second innings set England a massive target of 520 runs.

In 2021, starting with the World Test Championship final, 's batting order will have to go back and look at these three Test matches to remind themselves what it takes for a bowling attack to prosper and eventually win a Test match in England.

82819590.jpg

Another aspect that the team management has been thinking about is the lack of 'big hundreds' in recent months. Kohli last scored a Test century 13 innings ago. Shubhman Gill hasn't recorded his first century one in 13 innings so far. Between 2018 and now, Ajinkya Rahane has three centuries in 50 Test innings - of course, including the priceless ton at the in December - but none beyond 110 or the 115-run mark.

Not just the paucity of centuries but the lack of 'big hundreds' has kept India away from registering the kind of totals that would give the bowling attack that required 'cushion'.

82819595.jpg
In fact, barring 's two big knocks in 2019 against South Africa at home and the recent 161 against England in Chennai, none of the other top-order Indian batsmen have managed to go past the 150-run mark. The last time an Indian batsman posted a heavy single-inning score was 19 months ago, when Kohli's unbeaten 254 gave India a massive innings win against South Africa in Pune.

For India to do any better than what they have managed on a tour of England in the last 14 years, this trend has to change. As soon as the batsmen hit the nets in the UK, one of the foremost challenges will be to play the moving ball and play it at the pace at which it's delivered: a few fractions of a second quicker .
82819600.jpg
For that, the team management intends to start with a few basics - a) reducing the 22 yards to 16 while facing the robo-arm in the nets; b) getting pre-shined balls in the nets and "figuring out ways" to make the shiny side heavier; c) working on the 'art of leaving' - which is, making sure, not every ball is meant to be played.

Reducing the bowling length to 16 yards will mean batsmen facing quicker deliveries with lesser time at hand. That quick-second decision to either play it or let it go is a time-honoured skill in Test match batting that the team will have to adhere to.

"The other thing is to understand what's happening around you, assess the conditions, wait and bide time. Mark the bowlers and play on merit. These basic things are going to matter," said a team source.

India will rely on pujara, Kohli and pant alot.

Eng batsmen aren't good either.

So it will be a battle between the bowlers

These stats just shows how tough it has been for our batsman in England conditions. The reason behind India's super success in England in 2000s was probably Rahul Dravid but we simply don't have a batsman as good as him vs swing to thrive in those conditions.

Having moaned about pitches in India, won't be surprised if England leave grass on surface: Sunil Gavaskar

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar expects England to dish out green tracks for Team India in the upcoming five-match Test series between the two sides. England had earlier expressed their disappointment over the spin-friendly conditions in Chennai during the away Test series against India earlier this year. England had lost the four-match Test series 3-1 after winning the opener in Chennai.

Gavaskar said after 'moaning' about the pitches in India, it won't be a surprise if England prepares green seaming tracks for the Indian team. However, the batting legend reckoned India will be up for the challenge as they have a quality pace attack which can create problems for the England batsmen in seaming conditions.

"Having moaned about the pitches in India earlier this year, it won't be a surprise if the groundsman in England leaves a little grass on the surface. That is no longer a worry as India have an attack that will also thrive on it and cause problems for the England batsmen too," Gavaskar wrote in his column for The Telegraph.

Gavaskar has backed India to script history by winning the upcoming Test series in England. Though he didn't predict the scoreline of the five-match series, the batting legend feels it will be a golden summer for Indian cricket in England.
The summer in England promises to be the golden summer of Indian cricket. After the WTC finals there is a gap of about six weeks before the Test series starts against England and that should be enough for the team to play some practice games and tune up for what England can hurl at them. It is foolish to try and predict the score but it looks like it will be an Indian summer in England," he wrote.

Team India lost the Test series 4-1 on their last tour of England despite playing some phenomenal cricket with captain Virat Kohli leading from the front. A lot will once again rely on Kohli's shoulders as India look to avenge the defeat against the hosts this time around.

Indian fast bowling attack is on par with England(in english conditions) so this strategy of going with green tracks might just backfire.
The spinning tracks worked in our favour coz our Spinners were way better.

'Every time India have come to England, they've been hammered': Vaughan expects 'trend to continue' in five-Test series

The last three times India have toured England, they have lost the Test series comprehensively, and former captain Michael Vaughan expects the pattern to continue this time around too.

We are less than three weeks away from the start of the World Test Championship final between India and New Zealand, but while all the talk is surrounding the all-important contest, the subsequent five-Test series between India and hosts England promises to be an equally engaging encounter

The last three times India have toured England, they have lost the Test series comprehensively, and former captain Michael Vaughan expects the pattern to continue this time around as well.

"England will win. It's in England... I mean you all have to look at the trends over the last few years. Everytime England have gone to India, they've been hammered. And everytime India have come to England, they've been hammered. That's the fact. And I think that will carry on. England are a team at home that are very, very difficult to beat with the Duke ball," Vaughan told CricTracker.

The difference will be batting. Our guys are clueless against swing as we saw in NZ

Even last England tour, only Kohli performed and even he needed luck

May be you are not aware of this rule but apart from bowling India also has to bat on those tracks. :inti

The Indian team has landed in England and Virat Kohli’s men will first play the ICC World Test Championship final against New Zealand at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton from June 18. India then will play the first Test match against England on August 4 and they will have almost 45 days to prepare for the five-match Test series against England.

Meanwhile, India was beaten by 4-1 in the previous tour of England. The visitors were competitive which doesn’t reflect in the series margin and they will look to turn the tables in the upcoming series.

The Indian team has got the experience under their belt and they will be looking to come up with a collective effort. India has a potent pace battery as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma have done a fine job in the overseas conditions.

Sunil Gavaskar said while talking to Telegraph India, “The Test series against England starts more than six weeks after the WTC final, so the result of that single game will have little or no impact on the India v England series. India will win the series 4-0 since it’s being played in August-September.

On the other hand, Sunil Gavaskar added that the swing bowlers will enjoy bowling the Duke balls as it provides assistance in the English conditions. Both India and New Zealand also have a quality bowling line-up.

The Little Master added, “The Dukes ball has shown that it certainly is one that moves in favourable conditions… so the swing bowlers will enjoy bowling with it for sure. The ball moves a lot more in June in England so it will be a challenge for the batsmen of both teams as both have a terrific pace attack”.

The World Test Championship final will take place at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton from June 18.

The Indian cricket team will play two intra-squad games at the Riverside ground in Durham before the five-match Test series against England as Virat Kohli's men are unlikely to get any warm-up first-class games against county sides.

India captain Virat Kohli had expressed his displeasure at not being given any first-class games before the England series, starting in Nottingham on August 4.

"Due to COVID-19 protocols, they will play two intra-squad four-day matches before the first Test in August," an ECB spokesperson told PTI on Friday.

While it is understood that BCCI had requested ECB for a few practice games, the COVID-19 situation won't allow any such plan to go ahead.

Asked if there is any chance of a game against county sides, the spokesperson said, "No".

In England, cricketers from various counties are regularly being tested for COVID but are not being kept in any bubble.

The Indian team, once it assembles in London on July 14 and moves to Durham, will be once again be in a bubble.

"The domestic cricketers of England not being in a bubble is an issue for sure. That's why the games in Durham will be intra-squad ones," a BCCI official said on conditions of anonymity.

India are currently travelling with 24 players -- 20 in the official squad and four reserves -- which will allow them to play intra-squad games.

However, legends like Sunil Gavaskar have questioned the amount of preparedness that a simulated match can give the team. The touring teams, in the past, have played multiple first-class games against county sides.

In simulated matches, a player can bat again if he gets out quickly unlike a proper first-class match.

Chairman of national selectors Chetan Sharma and another senior selector Sunil Joshi are not going to England for the five-Test series as strict quarantine rules have become an impediment.

It is understood that India being among the Red List countries, there are no direct flights to the United Kingdom.

Anyone travelling from India either needs to travel by a charter flight like the team or first fly to a country which is not in UK's Red List, quarantine there and then take a connecting flight to England.

"Yes, Debu (Debasish Mohanty) and Abbey (Kuruvilla) are going to Sri Lanka where the white-ball squad will play six games. They are in quarantine at the Mumbai hotel along with rest of the team. But no selector is travelling to UK," a BCCI source informed.

It is also understood in the year of a T20 World Cup, it is more important to check out the younger crop of players in Sri Lanka rather than the tried and tested automatic choices who are in the UK for the traditional format.

There are discussions going to slot Virat Kohli at number 3 then including KL Rahul or Hanuma Vihari into the middle order in the longer format.

That will be another poor decision. India should play this line up:

Rohit
Rahul
Gill
Kohli
Rahane
Pant
Jadeja/Thakur
Ashwin
Shami
Bumrah
Siraj

'Twice he's scored a double century opening the innings': Gavaskar suggests potential change for India for England Tests

For things to change this time around, a constant effort needs to be made by India, and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels it can start by reshuffling India's opening combination.

India have a decent break ahead of the start of the five-Test series against England. Following their defeat to New Zealand in the final of the World Test Championship, India have time to fine tune and work on the areas that let them down in Southampton against New Zealand. The team is reported to break away from the bubble and enjoy their time in England before regrouping on July 14 and start preparations for England Tests.

India's last three tours of England suggest that they have never found it easy against the moving Dukes ball in the UK. They last won a Test series in England in 2007 under Rahul Dravid, but have since lost 0-4, 1-3, 1-4 in subsequent tours in 2011, 2014 and 2018 respectively. For things to change this time around, a constant effort needs to be made, and former India captain Sunil Gavaskar feels it can start by reshuffling India's opening combination.

The BCCI has written to the ECB to conduct a couple of warm-up matches for India ahead of the England series starting August 4, and that is where Gavaskar believes the management can try testing Mayank Agarwal and Shubman Gill before deciding who gets the nod to open with Rohit Sharma. India have stuck with the pair of Rohit and Gill since the Australia series late last year, but the 21-year-old's technical shortcomings are proving to be a but of an issue for him reckons Gavaskar.
