The India tour of England (2021)

The King Legend, the messiah that was promised, the forgotten prince scores a century!

In for Pujara in the series opener?

Brilliant from KL.

The most versatile batsman of this era is soon gonna be back in test cricket :)

Hope this useless Indian team loses it 5-0 to England....this team cannot win as long as kohli is there

Stumps on Day 1 :

India scored 306/9 in the first innings of the practice match against County Select X1:

KL Rahul - 101(150) redt out.
Ravi Jadeja - 75(146)
20's for Mayank Agarwal, Pujara, Vihari and Thakur.

Terrific knock from KL Rahul. I am astonished that a batsman of such pedigree being constantly benched for much mediocre alternatives. Just go through this thread, I have time and again said he is a must for India in all formats but got mocked. Again a case of when Rajdeep speaks...you just listen. Hope he now get to play the 1st test replacing Pujara.

Bhai you speak to yourself and really listen to yourself.
He had consistent failures as an opener and was duly dropped. Every Indian fan wants him to reach his potential but not sure where is he lost in Test Cricket.

England Men’s Head Coach Chris Silverwood has named a 17-player squad for opening two Tests of the LV= Insurance Test Series against India starting at Trent Bridge on Wednesday 4 August 2021.

England Men’s Test Squad
Joe Root (Yorkshire) Captain
James Anderson (Lancashire)
Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire)
Dom Bess (Yorkshire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Rory Burns (Surrey)
Jos Buttler (Lancashire)
Zak Crawley (Kent)
Sam Curran (Surrey)
Haseeb Hameed (Nottinghamshire)
Dan Lawrence (Essex)
Jack Leach (Somerset)
Ollie Pope (Surrey)
Ollie Robinson (Sussex)
Dom Sibley (Warwickshire)
Ben Stokes (Durham)
Mark Wood (Durham)

All-rounder Ben Stokes returns to the Test squad after he missed the two-match series against New Zealand in June with the fractured finger he sustained during the Indian Premier League.

Stokes captained England to a 3-0 series win in the Royal London Series against Pakistan earlier this month and has since rested to help ensure his fitness ahead of the India Tests.

Jos Buttler, Jonny Bairstow and Sam Curran also come back into the Test squad. Ollie Robinson is included after he took seven wickets on his Test debut against the Black Caps at Lord’s.

Jofra Archer (right elbow) and Chris Woakes (bruised heel) are both unavailable due to injury.

Archer continues to progress following elbow surgery but is not ready at this point to return to Test cricket. Woakes suffered a bruised heel last week and is undergoing a rehabilitation programme aimed to allow him to be fit and available later in the series.

England Men’s Head Coach, Chris Silverwood, said:

“A home Test series against India is one of the most anticipated red-ball series and this promises to be an outstanding five Tests.
“India are a quality team who have shown their ability to get results away from home. We are expecting a highly competitive series and have selected our strongest possible squad.

“The returns of all-rounders Ben Stokes and Sam Curran provide balance that allows us to get back to a structure that has been successful in Test cricket.

“Ben’s leadership in the Royal London Series, when he played despite his finger not yet being 100 per cent, typified his character and commitment that drives the players around him forward. With Jos and Jonny back in the squad we have added further experience and quality that will be needed against the world’s second-ranked team.

“We have selected Ollie Robinson after his seven-wicket Test debut against New Zealand. Ollie proved in that Test that he has the ability to replicate his outstanding form in the County Championship at international level and we will continue to work with him to develop his England career.”

The England Men’s Test squad will report to Loughborough on Wednesday 28 July ahead of the first LV= Insurance Test starting at Trent Bridge on Wednesday 4 August.

The players selected in this squad will be available to play in The Hundred for each team’s first two matches before joining the Test squad.

Avesh Khan, Washington Sundar play for County Select XI against India in warm-up game; Kohli and Rahane rested

Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar were playing against their own teammates in the warm-up game between County Select XI and Indians. The ECB made a request to the Indian team management to let two players from the Indian contingent play for County Select XI after some of their players were deemed to be unavailable either due to injury or close contacts of a Covid-19 positive person. Accordingly, Sundar and Khan have been made available to play for their team.

Khan opened the bowling alongside Craig Miles, as seen on Durham Cricket’s YouTube channel on the live stream. The Indian pacer struggled to get his line and length right bowling with the new ball as he was hit for boundaries by Indian opener Mayank Agarwal. Before the lunch break, Khan bowled seven overs and gave 28 runs. His spell also included two maiden overs. On the other hand, off-spinner Sundar did not bowl in the first session. Both wore the Indian Test jersey in the ongoing game.

However, Avesh Khan sustained a blow to his left thumb on Day 1 of the warm-up game. He has gone to get a scan. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him.

Playing without the services of rested Indian captain Virat Kohli and vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane, opener Rohit Sharma is leading the team in the three-day warm-up game at Riverside Ground, Chester-le-Street. They are likely to feature in the intra-squad game later this month.

Kohli felt some stiffness in his back on late Monday evening and he has been advised rest from the three-day first-class warm-up game by the BCCI Medical Team. Rahane has mild swelling around his left upper hamstring. This has been addressed by an injection. He is not available for the three-day first-class warm-up game. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him, and he is expected to fully recover well in time for the first Test against England starting from 4th August at Nottingham.

In the first session, India lost three wickets for the score of 80. Sharma departed after scoring 9 runs whereas Agarwal (28) and Cheteshwar Pujara (21) lost their wickets after getting good starts. Lyndon James got the wicket of both openers whereas Pujara fell to Jack Carson.

Team India are wearing black armbands to mourn the sad demise of former India cricketer Yashpal Sharmaji, who sadly passed away on 13th July after a cardiac arrest. Head Coach Ravi Shastri was his teammate in the 1983 World Cup winning squad

This game will be a chance for Hanuma Vihari and KL Rahul to showcase their talent before the five-Test series against England starting August 8.

Warm-up game: Pacer Avesh Khan remains under observation, won't take further part on Day 2 and 3

Durham: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Wednesday informed that pacer Avesh Khan remains under observation after sustaining a blow to his left thumb on Day 1 of the ongoing three-day warm-up game between Indians and County Select XI.

"UPDATE - Fast bowler Avesh Khan remains under observation of the BCCI Medical Team. He will not be taking any further part on Day 2 and Day 3 of the warm-up game," tweeted BCCI.

India cricketers Washington Sundar and Avesh have been picked in the playing XI for the County Select XI for the three-day warm-up game in Durham.

On Tuesday, Indians won the toss and opted to bat against County Select XI. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane have been rested for the clash, and as a result, Rohit Sharma is leading the outfit.

Kohli had been advised rest after he felt stiffness in his back late on Monday evening, while vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has mild swelling around his left upper hamstring which has been addressed by an injection.

KL Rahul hit a classy hundred while Ravindra Jadeja scored a gutsy fifty (75) to revive Indians' innings on Day One of the three-day warm-up game.

At stumps, India ended at 306/9 on day one as Rahul and Jadeja headlined the visitors' show with standout performances. Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj remained unbeaten on 3 and 1 respectively.

Time to welcome the chap with test hundred in five different countries in test cricket again.

This time in middle order though. Let us all welcome the most versatile batsman of this era.

We can send him as an opener. I am pretty sure one of Rohit or Mayank will fail in this tour.

Won't mind him playing as a wicketkeeper batsman though. Always in favour of Rahul playing as a wicketkeeper. :inti

That will be a huge blunder. :inti

I'm not sure Rahul will be good at 3 but I do believe he can be a good player at no.5.

Currently all of Pujara, Kohli and Rahane are underperforming and we have a middle order that's nearly non existent. Since kaptaan is undroppable, we have to drop either one of Pujara or Rahane if both continue to fail. I don't think we can afford to carry both Pujara and Rahane underperforming.

Rahul is seen as a middle order batsman in the Indian test team now. Also, his hundred came at no. 5.

Rahane has hamstring injury. So, preferably, he should rest for a few months.

Why do you say so? Pant is doing well in test cricket, isn't he?

I was talking about replacing Rahane with Rahul.

He is playing as a wicketkeeper in the practice match as well. He performs well most of the time when he play as a wicketkeeper. :inti

Chalo ji, now that Pakistan has failed miserably against England, let’s all support England. If they beat India, Pakistanis will feel good. They can’t beat a decent opposition themselves.

Okay that make sense.

Another blow for Team India as all-rounder Washington Sundar ruled out of England Test series: Report

Team India has suffered another injury blow on the ongoing England tour as all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the upcoming fixtures. Sundar, who has been included in the County Select XI's side for the ongoing three-day first-class game against Rohit Sharma-led India, has reportedly suffered a finger injury.

As per The Times of India, the details of Sundar's finger injury are yet to be ascertained. This is the second time in as many tours that Sundar is returning home from the UK without playing any international fixture.

In 2018, the all-rounder had to return from England due to an ankle injury that he suffered in Ireland, where India played 2 T20Is before landing in England.

Sundar is the second player from the squad to be ruled out. Earlier, Shubman Gill was also ruled out of the England Test series due to a leg injury. As per TOI, he has returned home.

Gill was a part of the playing XI in the World Test Championship final. India have as many as 3 openers in their line-up who can replace Gill.

As for Sundar, Axar Patel can take his spot. The youngster had bleak chances of making it to the playing XI in the presence of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

Meanwhile, India's standby pacer Avesh Khan has also been ruled out of the tour. The report adds that Avesh has a fractured finger. The right-arm pacer was also part of the County Select XI squad in the ongoing fixture.

Welcome to Day 3 of the three-day warm-up game against County XI.

Mayank Agarwal and Cheteshwar Pujara to open the innings for #TeamIndia

Looking at the performances in practice match and using my cricketing acumen, I think below should be the playing XI for first test:

Rohit Sharma
Cheteshwar Puajara
KL Rahul
Virat Kohli (c)
Ajinka Rahane
Rishab Pant (wk)
Ravi Jadeja
Ravi Ashwin
M. Shami
M. Siraj
J. Bumrah

My fellow Indian posters, do you agree?

Indian Players ruled out of the England series due to injuries:

Shubman Gill
Avesh Khan
Washington Sundar

lol this time it is younger ones getting injured as compared to Australian tour. What is it with these injuries on recent tours with the Indian players.

Why didn't Sharma open in the second innings? Surely he needs all the practice against the new Dukes ball he can get.

India vs County Select X1 practice match ended in a draw:

KL Rahul - 101(150)
Ravi Jadeja - 75(146) & 51(77)

Hanuma Vihari - 43*(105) & 24(71)
Umesh Yadav - 3/22(15)

Durham: All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja hit his second fifty while Hanuma Vihari scored 43* as the three-day practice game between India and County Select XI ended in a draw on Thursday.

County Select XI needed 284 runs to win on the final day in the second innings but the side scored 31 in 15.5 overs to walk away with a draw after India had declared their innings on 192/3.

Resuming their first innings on Thursday, County Select XI weren't able to add any run as they were bowled out at 220/10 in the first half an hour of play.

Cheteshwar Pujara and Mayank Agarwal opened the batting for India in the second innings and stitched an 87-run stand for the first wicket.

While Pujara scored 38, Mayank got out three runs short of his half-century. Hanuma Vihari and Ravindra Jadeja then carried the Indian innings, stitching an 84-run partnership.

While Vihari scored an unbeaten 43, Jadeja walked off after hitting a fine half-century off 77 deliveries. The visitors declared their second innings on 192-3 and set a target of 284 runs for a win.

Jake Libby and Haseeb Hameed both made sure that County Select XI doesn't lose a wicket as the match ended in a draw.

Brief Scores: Indians 311 and 192/3 d (Ravindra Jadeja 51, Mayank Agarwal 47; Jack Carson 2-64) vs County Select XI 220 and 31/0 (Jake Libby 17, Haseeb Hameed 13 )

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Test future under discussion as BCCI looks to send injury replacements to England: Report

Bhuvneshwar Kumar could be one of the players to be sent to England as three Indian players on the tour of the UK have been ruled out of the entire series.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) turned down the team management's request to send a replacement for injured Shubman Gill. Even after Rishabh Pant had tested positive for Covid-19, the board refrained from sending a cover. However, injuries to Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar have now seen the board reevaluate its stance.

As per a report in the Times of India, the recent injuries to Avesh and Washington – both of whom have been ruled out of the entire series – have seen BCCI contemplating sending players to England. While it is certain that the replacements will be sent from Sri Lanka, the travel restrictions currently in place have seen the Indian board delay taking the final call.

"We will see if replacements are needed to be sent to England immediately," a senior BCCI official was quoted as saying by TOI on Thursday.

With 3 players from the 24-man squad that was sent to England already ruled out, the Indian team could consider itself short in certain areas. While the team management had asked for at least one of Prithvi Shaw and Devdutt Padikkal to be sent to England as cover for Gill, the team also needs a bowler at the moment after Avesh Khan and Washington Sundar were ruled out.

As far as the prospect of sending players to England from Sri Lanka is concerned, the BCCI's task would become easier if the United Kingdom government eases travel restrictions for passengers coming in from Sri Lanka.

"There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. Travel restrictions is one such thing. If players are indeed sent then it will be from the batch that is in Sri Lanka at the moment. Sri Lanka is also on the 'Red List' for the UK government. The board is figuring out logistical challenges before taking a call. A bubble-to-bubble transfer isn't possible. Selectors will decide how many players are needed to be sent if need arises. If Sri Lanka is moved to the 'Amber List next week, then things will get easier," the official added.

The report also claims that Bhuvneshwar Kumar could be the one to travel to England, especially considering the pacer has reiterated his stance to play all three formats for India. The discussion over his future in the longest format is underway.

Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav, Jayant Yadav to join Virat Kohli & Co. in England for Test series: Report

Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav could be on their way to England from Sri Lanka as replacements for injured players. Jayant Yadav is also expected to fly to the UK from India.

Having impressed in white-ball cricket, Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav could have a busy summer, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee reportedly looking to fly them to England for the 5-match Test series. The Indian cricket team in the United Kingdom has seen three of their players being ruled out and now, replacements could be in line.

The injury to Shubman Gill was the first significant blow to the Indian team and the team management in England immediately asked for either Prithvi Shaw or Devdutt Padikkal to be sent as cover. Though an immediate replacement was denied, the subsequent injuries have not left the selectors with another option but to send reinforcements.

As per a report in the Indian Express, Prithvi Shaw is likely to be accompanied by Suryakumar Yadav and Jayant Yadav, with the trio likely to be flown to England soon. Such a measure is being contemplated by the BCCI selection committee after Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan were ruled out of the entire Test series.

Both Avesh and Sundar are dealing with finger injuries and are out for a few weeks. Avesh had travelled to England only as a net bowler and hence his direct replacement isn't needed at the moment. While Jayant is being brought in to replace the injured Sundar, Suryakumar has been courted because of a hamstring issue that Ajinkya Rahane is reportedly facing.

The presence of Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Mohammad Siraj, Shardul Thakur and Umesh Yadav is enough as far as the depth of the fast bowling unit is concerned for the 5-match series.

Shaw and Suryakumar, both are in Sri Lanka for the white-ball series and were part of all three matches of the ODI series. Though it isn't yet known as to when the pair could be flown to England, the move is likely to take place after the conclusion of the shortest format series on Thursday. Jayant, on the other hand, is in India at the moment. It isn't yet known whether he will join Shaw and SKY in Sri Lanka before taking the flight to England or will be flown directly in a separate flight.

Why not send Vijay Shankar instead of Jayant Yadav as he can be a good seam bowling A/R for England conditions? Playing spin A/R has limitations in England.

Looks like they wanted to send a like for like replacement for Washington Sundar but it doesn't really make sense, Vijay Shankar would have been a better choice but at least Surya has been considered for a test spot.

Durham: India head coach Ravi Shastri on Saturday expressed his disappointment at 10-day isolation rules for anyone who comes in contact of a COVID-19 positive person as it happened with bowling coach Bharath Arun, who has already completed his vaccination course. Arun, along with senior wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha and stand bye opener Abhimanyu Easwaran, had to remain in isolation for 10 days as per UK Health protocols as they had been in contact with throwdown specialist-cum-masseur Dayanand Garani.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">My right hand back in the house. Looking fitter and stronger after being in isolation for 10 days even though testing negative all the way. The trio were back in the team bubble on Saturday after completing their mandatory isolation period of one and half weeks. This was despite all of them testing negative during RT-PCR tests.

“My right hand back in the house. Looking fitter and stronger after being in isolation for 10 days even though testing negative all the way. Bloody frustrating these isolation rules. 2 jabs of vaccine has to be trusted," Shastri tweeted along with a selfie with his close friend and bowling coach Arun.

For the record, Saha had already recovered from COVID in May after contracting the virus while playing for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League which was postponed due to multiple cases inside the bubble.

Time for the main event! I doubt our chances but England are weaker than the kiwis and if they carry on with their nonsense rotation policy, India may just have a chance.

India have added Prithvi Shaw and Suryakumar Yadav to their squad in England, following injuries to Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan.

Shubman Gill suffered a "stress reaction on his left lower leg" after the ICC World Test Championship Final 2021 against New Zealand. It was initially reported that he'd miss the first Test against England, but Gill has now returned home to India, meaning he will not take any part in the Test series.

Washington Sundar injured his right-hand bowling finger during the three-day warm-up game against County XI – he has been ruled out for the remainder of the tour, with his recovery taking longer than expected.

Rohit Sharma, Mayank Agarwal, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (c), Ajinkya Rahane, Hanuma Vihari, Rishabh Pant, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammad Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Umesh Yadav, KL Rahul, Wriddhiman Saha (wicket-keeper), Abhimanyu Easwaran, Prithvi Shaw, Suryakumar Yadav
India squad for England Tests

Avesh Khan, the young pacer, also sustained an injury during the warm-up match – a blow to his left thumb that led to a fracture. He is also ruled out of the tour, and will return to India.

In better news for India, Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper batsman who recently recovered from Covid-19, and "has begun preparations for the upcoming Test series."

The BCCI release also confirmed "Bowling coach B Arun, Wriddhiman Saha and Abhimanyu Easwaran have completed their self-isolation in London" and joined the team in India.

This will be India's first series since the ICC World Test Championship 2021 Final against New Zealand, which they lost by eight wickets to New Zealand.

India have since played the warm-up match against the County XI, a drawn encounter in which the likes of KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja and Umesh Yadav impressed.

India's series against England will begin with the first of five Tests in Nottingham on 4 August.

Then they should have asked for this in original team selection

This is a mess

Shaw won't have any time to acclimatize

Think Agarwal gets the first two test matches, they won't risk exposing Shaw straight into the tour.

He'll anyway have to quarantine

I meant he won't have any games under his belt, which he would have if he was in original squad.

If Kohli-Shastri preferred him to Mayank, then he should have been part of original squad.

They have been pushing for his inclusion since Gill got injured, if it were up to them Shaw would have flown to the UK at the start of July. It's the silly and pointless disconnect between the selection committee and the coaching staff that has led to this situation.

Its because the squads for both series had already been announced and I'm sure Kohli-Shastri got what they wanted for England tour.At that point they wanted Mayank as reserve opener so got it.There is one another opener too in the squad,Easwaran.

Now suddently they want to bypass this and want Shaw when need actually arose. It was good of selectors to deny but looks like Kohli-Shastri got their wish.

Kohli is a confused captain most of the times and this is typical.

Neither of the openers give me any hope of performing in England. I think if India has to do well in England, they will need middle order and lower middle order to score loads of runs.

Covid Hits Team India: Suryakumar Yadav, Prithvi Shaw's England Departure May Face Delay

India-Sri Lanka second T20I was postponed by a day after all-rounder Krunal Pandya was diagnosed with Covid-19. Following this, the whole team is now in isolation. However, this has put a spanner in BCCI’s plans as they were looking to send Suryakumar Yadav and Prithvi Shaw to England. The duo was selected after Virat Kohli led side faced multiple injury issues in Shubman Gill, Washington Sundar and Avesh Khan. The three youngsters were sent back to India and with staff shortage, BCCI quickly decided to send Yadav and Shaw as a back-up.

It was earlier reported that eight close contacts of Krunal Pandya were isolating and thankfully they have turned out to be covid-negative in the subsequent RT-PCR tests conducted yesterday night. However, no one knows whether Yadav and Shaw were among them. Whatever the case may be, it now looks that the duo might not be able to depart at the stipulated time.

“The second T20I between Sri Lanka and India originally scheduled to be played on July 27 has been pushed forward by a day and will now take place on Wednesday, July 28," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a media statement.

“Following the Rapid Antigen Tests conducted ahead of the match on Tuesday morning, Krunal Pandya was found to be positive. The Medical Teams have identified eight members as close contacts," the release had earlier stated.

However, it has been learnt from BCCI sources that all the members of the Indian contingent were put in room isolation till they received their negative RT-PCR report.

The entire contingent has undergone RT-PCR tests on the day to ascertain any further outbreak in the squad.

“If everyone is in the clear, we can have the match on Wednesday. Maximum among the eight close contacts who are also in mandatory isolation are players," a BCCI source added.

Think India need to bite the bullet and ask Rahul to open, he's done it before and had some success at it. It'd be highly unfair if they choose to sacrifice Pujara or Vihari as opener.

Rahul will probably score more runs than Pujara in the middle order at a faster clip and Pujara will probably eat more into the new ball than Rahul would've done opening. I would make Pujara open and Rahul play in the middle order

What's your playing 11 for 1st test knowing pitch will be green mamba.( Weather prediction also not good .rain all 5 days )

Rahul played as an opener in the last test series in England.

His highest was 149 in the dead rubber which we lost.

His scores : 4, 13, 8, 10, 23, 36, 19, 0, 37, 149 :inti

Rohit
Vihari
Pujara
Kohli (c)
Rahane
Rahul
Pant (wk)
Shardul
Siraj
Shami
Bumrah

Vihari to roll his arm over if required.

So exactly what else need to happen for Rahul to get a chance to open?

I think we should play this team in 1st test and see how it goes:

Rahul
Rohit
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Pant
Vihari
Ashwin
Shami
Bumrah
Siraj

KL Rahul is seen as a middle order batsman. He is a potential 50 averaging middle order bat for India. His time will come, a comeback script is written for him.

My team will be :-

Rohit
Vihari
Pujara
Kohli
Rahul
Pant(wkt)
Shardul
Ashwin
Shami
Siraj
Ishant

However, Rahane will most likely start over KL.

I will pick Ashwin over Vihari and open with Pujara. :inti

The wicket is a green mamba. The spinner is not going to bowl a lot of overs. Would rather have an extra batsman for the spinner who isn't going to be used much. Especially as our batting is weak on such pitches.

I apologize if being outspoken. But to me India 3-1 or 4-0.India on paper is simply too good for England. However cricket is all about uncertainty.I agree completely with Sunil Gavaskar.England even won in Australia in recent times?

How recent was that? This current team is not capable of competing at home, the batting is too brittle and also poor resource utilisation as well. The series is there for the taking, India are favourites. I’d give Pakistan an outside chance to.
