Very rarely do ex-captains make good team-mates. At best, sometimes ex-captains are able to be good performers by completely stepping away from the core strategy group (e.g Shoaib Malik currently). Its amazing to see Kohli/Dhoni actually form a successful partnership with Dhoni being very active in providing inputs while never seeming to step on Kohli's shoes/authority. India does seem to have a track record in being able to do this - Ganguly/Sachin, Dravid/Ganguly and Dhoni/Dravid to a lesser extent and now Kohli/Dhoni. Even among all these Kohli/Dhoni seem to have the strongest partnership. The other example outside India would be Sri Lanka with Jayawardene/Sangakarra/Dilshan/Matthews. Why do you think very few international teams have been able to replicate this?

Dhoni has backed Kohli from the start. Identified his potential and could see the killer instinct he possesses. Kohli is just giving due respect to his mentor.

Mainly because the captain in question would tend to retire leaving the team with a new captain, Dhoni was the case of just stepping down from captaincy and rarely do you see that happening from what I've seen.

both of them have nothing to prove and have achieved immense success therefore there can't be any professional jealousy. Itll be very interesting to see the dynamic of the indian team once dhoni retires

Just like Ganguly, Dhoni has left behind a great legacy with players like Kohli, Sharma, Jadeja. He is a great leader.

Success of the team is most important to them. They are not planing for their place in the team or with any other agenda.

The Pakistani example I would give would be Younis/Misbah. Granted Younis wasn't captain for long and there were other pretenders who muddied the waters.

The other current interesting dynamic is Amla/ABdV/Faf and especially ABdV/Faf. Faf and AB have played together since school and Faf was always chosen captain though AB was the better player. AB is a bad captain and Faf a good one, but Faf always wants to give up the captaincy to AB

Sorry but dhoni had no hand in Kohli's rise, he deserves as much credit for Kohli's current status as azaruddin did for Tendulkar's. Here would have been great even if dhoni wasn't the captain. Sharma and jadeja are definitely his guys though, he kept backing them when they failed for a long time until they came good something that was never required with kohli.

Kohli in a sense owes a part of his career as a Test batsman to Dhoni. On the 2011-12 tour, Dhoni ensured he was not dropped for the 3rd test vs Australia. Kohli scored a 75 and has not looked back ever since.

Also, reflects well on the personalities. Kohli doesn't mind going to Dhoni for advice and Dhoni ensures he provides limited inputs and doesn't make it feel as if he's imposing himself on Virat's captaincy.

Really? Read about the discussions in the team before Perth test in Australia in Jan 2012 and wanted to play Rohit Sharma. Sehwag said selectors wanted to drop Kohli, Dhoni put his foot down.

Two awesome chasers and matchwinners that relate a lot to each other. Awesome of Dhoni to teach Kholi the trades.

The thing about Indians whenever I watch them on TV, they all seem very relaxed around each other and they don't have any complex about themselves which helps in them not getting jealous. That is why not just Dhoni and Kohli I would say the entire team is committed to fighting on a united front. Besides that of course there is mutual respect and the fact that Dhoni is nearing the end of his career. He knows he has played his innings as a skipper.

Pakistanis on the other hand have complexes, they will have groupings. Just looking by Hafeez's press talk it seems he is not fighting on a united front with Sarfraz. Until you don't let the best players play you will always notice a lack of harmony and complexes which affect the whole team in the end.

Dhoni has build Kohli as his successor and Kohli knows Dhoni can still contribute immensely in ODIs. Indian team is one of the most professional in the world and they all strive to contribute as a team, not individuals.

Perfect example. I always used to think about that match. After two failures Rohit was supposed to play in place of Virat but Dhoni chose to go with Virat and he scored.

It's not just Mutual respect though. Both of them play for a professional and powerful board, so they have to keep the TEAM's interests as top priority. They can't hold the cricket board for ransom, like desi teams did in the past .

Still remember the wierd statement frm kohli abt the lack of freedom of expression in the team during 2015 Bangla tour nd subsequently he was demoted down the batting order nd rahane was tried in #3 batting position during SAF home series...but virat's century in Chennai odi changed the course nd den aussie tour happened wid the beginning of 2016 and the rest is history...sure der were some differences in the beginning but glad that they worked it out and transition is successful nd working exceedingly well tilldate...touchwood
