The Kumar Sangakkara Mega thread

Potential wise its ABD. AB has decent cricket left in him and can achieve more than he has done so far.

ABD now.

Why so you consider him an ATG in ODIs? [MENTION=134867]Kiri[/MENTION]

Because of what he achieved through the latter stages of his career. It was record shattering stuff.

If u take all formats into account then its Virat Kohli! As Kumar Sangakkara has retired from ODIs and T20Is!

AB de Villiers is yet to prove himself in T20Is!

But he is so far ahead of Kohli in ODIs and Tests, you gotta give it to him.

Plus teams don't play a lot of T20s so he doesn't get a lot of chance to show his supremacy in international T20s these days.

And if you take the recent IPL, ABD is in another planet compared to Kohli who is very good.

Why has this thread got merged with the title as it is? Can a mod change the title to 'The Kumar Sangakkara Megathread' or something like that pls

Here's a statement from me, 'Kumar Sangakarra is the greatest left handed bat after Brian Lara'.

Agree or Disagree? Why?

Unfortunately majority of people don't really care about Sri Lanka as a test country (no offense intended) which resulted in Sanga not getting proper recognition..

Agree or Disagree? Why?

It appears most of Cricinfo readers also agree. Respect. Will miss Sanga.

What a player. Great innings today. I'll make sure to catch the highlights of his incredible innings later on. I don't care what anyone says but for me he is the best bat from Asia.

Here's a statement from me, 'Kumar Sangakarra is the greatest left handed bat after Brian Lara'.

Agree or Disagree? Why?

Disagree! I rate Saeed Anwar better than him! Saeed Anwar had a good record against McGrath and Warne in Tests! K Sangakarra played in an era of rare or almost no great bowlers!

I didn't the like gesture of K Sangakarra when he decided to skip a Test against Pakistan and India recently only to fulfil his county commitments and chose county over country!

Another century for Sanga. 101(FC),60(LA),9(FC),118(FC) and 166(LA) in his last 5 innings.

Sensational form in domestic cricket, but averaged only 40 in his last year of Test cricket.

He probably wasn't motivated to play for SL anymore. His attitude during the recent Pak and Indian series was disappointing but understandable.

Money talks even for those who excel at the best format of the game.

He had already signed a deal with Surrey thinking that he would retire after the WC afaik. But because of Mahela's retirement decided to stay on for a bit longer. I highly doubt he gets paid more over there tho. I think he would have just about had enough of all the SLC garbage. They have given him a tough time ever since that Cowdrey lecture.

I wouldn't read much into batting failures of a 38 year old batsman. Domestic cricket and test cricket have different standards. Even a slight loss of batting ability can expose you badly in test cricket, but that might not happen in FC cricket.

Would not read too much into these scores. SRT was scoring tons for fun in FC cricket while getting owned by Panesar in 2012. Similar thing happened to Sanga against Ashwin this year. He retired at the right time.

Third after Sobers and Lara for me, but certainly not far behind at all. True modern great.

Sachin was playing in Indian FC, while Sangakkara is playing in county cricket. His 160 was a LA match in semifinal. Big difference.

Top knock from the great man the other day for Surrey in the Royal London OD Quarter final. That too returning from Windies only a couple of weeks back after taking out the CPL title with Jamaica. Unbeaten 130 chasing 270 odd with wickets tumbling all around him. With nine down and 12 runs required off the last over hits a diving ramp shot for six and a four to take Surrey into the semis :)) Legend!

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">4 balls left, 10 runs required, 1 wicket remaining and <a href="https://twitter.com/KumarSanga2">@KumarSanga2</a> does this 😮 <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/hero?src=hash">#hero</a> <a href="https://t.co/CfwYoeacPq">https://t.co/CfwYoeacPq</a></p>— One-Day Cup (@OneDayCup) <a href="https://twitter.com/OneDayCup/status/766375589175492608">August 18, 2016</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

Hit an 88 and 48 in the last match too. Could have at least played 2 more years.

Could have I'm sure clearly still one of the best bats going around. Same with Mahela he hit an unbeaten ton in Somerset's QF as well. But don't think it would have done SL cricket any good tho. The side has been way too reliant on the seniors for a long time now. Dropping them in the deep end was the only way they were ever going to come out of it. As they say short term pain for long term gainez! :))

Watched that match live! It was so tense! Such a great player!

Sangakara shouldn't have retired in ODI's. He should of kept on playing. At least till the Champions Trophy at least SL wouldn't have been in such a dire state.

Sanga has finally reached sachin level

Sanga in his latter years has been arguably one of the best Batsman the world has ever seen. He was in his 20s and early 30s but in his late 30s he became so good. He probably felt that his performance will go down like most other batsman but it was the other way around.

A bit dissappointing if I were a Lankan fan. Maybe he just wanted to finish his International career with conclusion of the world cup. If I were him I would have atleast waited till the Champions Trophy.

Pure mind over matter. He basically decided he wanted to be great and willed himself, over the space of about 6 years, into Sri Lanka's best batsman.

Another Sublime hundred for Surrey.

Could have challenged Sachins test run tally if he had carried on.

He went out on top but just wanted a well deserved rest after carrying Lanka for so long even when he didn't need to

Has 3 centuries and a 80 in within the last month. Could have played longer like Misbah I feel. He was the only fittest player in the side after Dilshan and he wasn't taking any youngsters spot either.

After having his portrait unveiled at Lord's, Kumar Sangakkara graces the ground with a century :salute

The ol fella still going great guns by the looks of it. Thus far this season close to 500 runs @ around 120 in County Division One and close to 300 runs @ around 50 sR 90+ in Royal London One-Day Cup. Not a bad effort that.

He's playing brilliantly, but I don't buy that he would have continued scoring like this if he continued in tests. There were signs towards the end that he was declining. His last 2 test series vs Pak and India were very poor.

The thing is, when great batsmen decline, they are still great enough to dominate in domestic competitions where the quality and pressure is lesser. It doesn't mean they will still dominate tests. Same thing happened with Ponting. He looked horrible in his last tests but he went to Shield cricket in Australia and was still scoring huge amounts of runs and scoring hundreds at will against Australia's FC bowlers.

Kumar Sangakkara to retire from first-class cricket

Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara says he will retire from first-class cricket after this season.

The 39-year-old Surrey batsman, who quit Test cricket in 2015, is fifth in the list of all-time Test run scorers.

"You try to fight the inevitable but you need to get out while you're ahead," he told BBC Sport.

"It's the last time I'll play a four-day game here [at Lord's]. I'll be 40 in a few months, this is about the end of my time in county cricket."

Sangakkara has contracts to honour in Twenty20 competitions taking him into 2018, but added: "My career might have a few more months
but that's about it."

He averaged more than 57 runs across 134 Tests, making 11 double centuries in that time, and joined Surrey for the 2015 season.

He scored more than 1,000 first-class runs last season but, despite hitting two centuries against Middlesex over the weekend, Sangakkara believes September is the right time to end his career in the longer format.

"The biggest mistake that sometimes you can make is that you think you're better than you really are," he said.

"Cricketers, or any sort of sportsperson, have an expiry date and you need to walk away.

"I have been very lucky to play for as long as I did so but there's a lot more life to be lived away from the game."

Fitting finale at Lord's

Few players will have signed off their last first-class match at Lord's in as much style as Sangakkara.

Alongside two match-saving centuries, the former Durham and Warwickshire player also passed 20,000 first-class runs.

Those feats coincided with him having his portrait - which hangs beside those of fellow Sri Lanka greats Mahela Jayawardene and Muttiah Muralitharan - unveiled in the Lord's pavilion.

"It was a great privilege and an honour. I think the artist has made me look better than I actually am," he joked.

"I sat here in my last Test at Lord's for Sri Lanka thinking 'I hope I get a hundred, but wouldn't it be funny if I get out for a duck'.

"You never think of [scoring a] hundred. You think 'I want to get a hundred', but then you just try and do your processes, you try and get through tough periods, and bat as the game develops.

"I wasn't aware I'd reached 20,000 [first-class] runs - I only really know how many Test and One-Day International runs I've scored - but it was really nice to find out that I passed [that milestone].

'The mercenary in me is still alive'

Sangakkara will head to the Caribbean Premier League at the end of June, with Aaron Finch signed by Surrey as his replacement during that period, and he says he will continue to play cricket past the end of the English domestic season.

But after more than 19 years of playing the professional game, the opportunity to watch the great batsman play his trademark cover drive is coming to an end.

Asked if he would play T20 cricket after his summer, he replied: "Yes, I think the mercenary in me is still alive.

"I've got a couple of contracts I have to honour this year and one at the start of the next year," he said. "No-one wants an old dog just playing for the sake of playing.

"I think it's a good thing that all these [Twenty20] competitions push you to perform. That's the incentive because otherwise, if you're going to be a part of a side just to be the benchmark name, that's a bit disappointing."

So 4 FC tons on the trot 136, 105, 114, 120. Not bad going. All good things must eventually come to an end I guess. All the best Sangers.

Has equalled the County championship record of 5 consecutive centuries now. Just one away from 100 career hundreds. Legend!

Kumar Sangakkara played a fine knock to rescue his side which was tottering at 31/5 at one stage.

Sangakkara's past five County Championship innings have produced scores of 136, 105, 114, 120 and 177 not out and he has now scored 769 runs this season at an average of 128.16.

In between, he also struck an unbeaten 124 in Surrey's final One-Day Cup group match against Hampshire.

Wow he is still an excellent batsman. One of the greatest batsman to play the game.

damn son, still got it in him. One of SL's finest for sure! Infact, one of my favorite ATG player!

Should have seriously continued playing. Sri Lanka would've never been in the position they are today. Sure, he retired in peak form but he could've helped Sri Lanka transition to the next phase.

If he can score 5 100s in a row for a county team I think he would have done similar and still done well for Lanka. ATG for sure. Classy guy too. He and Maheal stand apart from rest of the Sri lankans.

Sanga is easily the second best Asian batsman after Tendulkar overall. Although I am tempted to say that he should not have retired that early, but all batsmen deserve to retire in their best form. Good luck to him, a true champion of the game

Gavaskar was 2nd best. Contest for 3rd best is between Dravid and Sanga

Kumar Sangakkara misses record sixth consecutive FC hundred by just 16 runs

Scored 135, 105, 114, 120 and 200 in his last five FC innings and missed a record sixth consecutive ton by just 16 runs for Surrey in the County Championship today. Also scored 124* in his last List A innings. What a legend. Criminally underrated and not brought up nearly enough in the GOAT conversations. Left international cricket at the top of his game and still owning bowlers at the age of 39.

So rescued Surrey again with 84 (107) after having a lead of just 163/7 at one point. Unfortunately fell just 16 runs short of the all-time record of 6 consecutive FC tons but still equalled the County record nevertheless. Well played champ!

Great batsman but not a lot to be looked into county stats. There comes a time when an established international batsman has absolutely no issues playing domestic cricket, being too used to a much higher level of competition. I read somewhere he actually equalled Parthiv Patel's record from back in 2007. Parthiv probably was 9 years old back then and never made to the Indian team over MS Dhoni.

Not really sure how that would have helped the situation tho other than maybe paper over the cracks for a few more years at best. Would have most likely kept Mendis out of the side as well had that happened. The only way things will improve is if SLC gets serious about fixing the broken domestic setup. Having 14 teams in the premier division is an absolute joke. There's a massive jump between the level of competition in the domestic comps and international cricket.

So disaapointing to hear ATG Sangakarra on the Microphone.

39 years old is in dream form and we deserved to see him in SL colours out in the middle rather than play County Cricket & Commentate.

Pre Mature Retirement :-/

Backs up the 5 FC tons on the trot with back-to-back List A tons in two must win games to take Surrey into the semis of the Royal London One-Day Cup. Legend!
