The role of Faheem Ashraf in the Pakistan team

Every team needs a Lance Klusner’s right? ...right arm fast bowler and left handed pinch hitter. Albeit a poor man’s but such is the state of the nation.

The guy can’t even play a 20(10) type of innings. Don’t see a use of him in the XI.

His role is to take care of batting when top order collapses. When top order has performed well, then he needs to make sure that such position is not squandered. In other words, he should be able to retain team's position in the game if it is already strong or make it stronger if possible.

While bowling he needs to contain runs or pick up wickets. If main bowlers are not able to pick wickets, then he should be able to.

Bump. Lot of people have advocated for his and Shadab's selection in the test squad. Could he have made a difference today?

Neither Faheem nor Shadab have any caliber to make an impact with either bat or ball in Australia.

Melbourne Renegades have been forced into a major reshuffle of their overseas players after their two Pakistan recruits, Usman Shinwari and Faheem Ashraf, became unavailable on the eve of the KFC Big Bash season.

It's understood uncapped English quick Richard Gleeson has been secured as a last-minute replacement and is expected to be available for the reigning BBL champions' season opener next week against Sydney Thunder on December 19 in Geelong.

His countryman Harry Gurney, a death-overs specialist who played an integral role in the Gades' maiden title last summer, will now be available for the whole tournament.

The reshuffle comes after Shinwari was selected to make his Test debut for Pakistan against Sri Lanka this week in their long-awaited return to playing at home.

Having only been announced as one of the Renegades' signings last week, Shinwari's call-up over the weekend took the club by surprise and forced them into an eleventh-hour scramble to find a replacement.

The loss of the Pakistani quick was then compounded earlier this week when they discovered Ashraf, the other overseas player they planned on having for the beginning of the season, had been held back to play domestic cricket in Pakistan.

Neither Shinwari nor Ashraf is expected to play in the BBL this season.

Instead, Gleeson has signed for the first eight games of the season before he is replaced by Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi.

Gurney had only originally been signed for the back-end of the tournament but is now expected to be available for their entire campaign.

BBL clubs are only allowed to field two international players in any one game, but new rules permit teams to have up to six overseas players on their books for the season.

"It's obviously unfortunate to lose Shinwari and Ashraf on the eve of the season but sometimes that's the nature of T20 cricket in a busy international schedule," new Renegades coach Michael Klinger said in a statement.

"We know things can change quickly with international players and we need to be ready to respond."

Gleeson has a strong record in England's domestic T20 competition with a career economy rate of 7.47 with Northamptonshire and Lancashire, and last month featured in the T10 league in the UAE.

The 32-year-old is a late bloomer having only made his first-class debut in a tour match against Australia during the 2015 Ashes tour, but quickly made his mark with Northamptonshire and last year played for the England Lions on a tour of the Caribbean.

"Richard bowls with genuine pace and is capable of hitting the areas that make it difficult for batsmen to score on a regular basis," said Klinger.

"His skills in the power play and at the death have resulted in him being one of the best T20 bowlers in the UK T20 Blast in recent years."

The absence of Shinwari, for the early part of the season at least, will be a blow for the Renegades after he made a considerable impact in his seven-game BBL stint last summer.

The left-armer topped the 150kph mark and took eight wickets at 21.50, while his economy rate of 6.14 was superb considering he bowled in the Power Play and the latter overs.

The Renegades' maiden title last summer was built largely on the back of frugal bowling, while their batting stocks have been boosted with the recruitment of prolific BBL star Shaun Marsh from the Perth Scorchers.

Of the XI that defeated crosstown rivals Melbourne Stars in last season's final, only Cameron White (Adelaide Strikers) and Chris Tremain (Sydney Thunder) have departed.

Melbourne Renegades squad: Aaron Finch (c), Cameron Boyce, Dan Christian, Tom Cooper, Zak Evans, Jake Fraser-McGurk, Richard Gleeson (England), Harry Gurney (England), Sam Harper, Marcus Harris, Mackenzie Harvey, Jon Holland, Shaun Marsh, Joe Mennie, Mohammad Nabi (Afghanistan), Kane Richardson, Will Sutherland, Beau Webster, Jack Wildermuth.

So does Haris Sohail's absence and Hasan Ali's injury open a role for Faheem in Pakistan side? Is it possible?

Might do okay with bowling. Needs a lot of work with his batting and fitness though.

Seems to be doing ok today vs NZ in 1st T20I ....

Been calling it for a while. He’s the X factor this Pakistan team has been missing. Some of his shots today were absolutely outstanding. Unlucky to be caught on the biggest boundary today. He will flourish in NZ.

He has that timing thing from the very beginning but he's just not the quality with the bat. Super inconsistent. Even today in his innings he played quite a few dot balls

He always had the big hitting talent but needs to do it consistently. Normally gets out after hitting a six or two.

He (alongside musa and Iftikhar) is probably my least favorite player in the Pak team . . Today's innings was his best in LOIs for Pakistan. . Though he missed an entire over by Santner. But given my incredibly low expectations from him, its the first time I've felt he has made any impact with the bat . . Though its unfortunate that it came from such a low base that the game seems to be done and dusted anyway

This innings will have a disastrous effect long term for Pakistan. He may have cemented his place for another 2 years with these 3 sixes. Truth is he's nowhere near good enough to hit consistently.

He is not good enough to build an innings. Lack of FC cricket, as an all-rounder is evident. He will be alright when he has to come in and bash a few around, but will be found wanting if needed to play a substantial innings.

I think it's overly optimistic to call him an allrounder after this knock. Every tailender these days can play shots like that. Its a massive improvement on his account though.

Last Time I remember him doing anything of note was against Bangladesh in a warm up match against them in the CT 2017. Apparently we chased down a mammoth 300+ in that game. There was high praise of Faheem's hitting ability back then.

He is average with the bat. His high backlift always gets him in trouble because he can barely ever get it down in time.

It was worst bowling in last 5 overs i have seen in few years. They kept feeding him short of length with good bounce. No yorkers, no varations. Only 1 good over by Santner and he played like a talender.

I agree, I posted this on the match thread as well. It seemed as if they only knew how to bowl short because they saw our batsmen struggle against them in the beginning. Atrocious bowling, can't believe we gave that newbie 4 wickets. I can't remember the countless number of trundlers our batting have made to look good by gifting wickets away to them.

Being an Indian, i fought with my roommates to watch Pak vs NZ rather than Ind vs Oz because i wanted to watch Haider Ali bat. Its disappointing. What a terrible soft dismissals by Pak top order. Can't believe Hafeez has the nerve to say he couldn't read bounce. He has been touring Nz for more than a decade. Even debutant bowler was surprised to see how Pak threw away wickets. He didn't bowled any special delivery.

Any bit of movement and bounce, hafeez goes walking.

Good little innings he may have secured his place in the team for another year

He's not great either batting or bowling, but he's still probably better than a lot of the alternatives being hyped. He can bowl relatively fast and he can hit hard although with a limited range of shots. For a T20 that's what you need more often than not. Nice orhtodox shots don't win T20games very often unless you are talking about genuine class batsmen.

This is for the first time ever I have seen him bat so well in white ball cricket. He looked in control against fast bowlers, it wasn't slogging

Hopefully more of his
