Hello friends. Recently got a lot of times in my hands and wondering whether this series is worth watching.

How similar is it to the godfather or the goodfellas?

Thanks brothers :amir3

"Worth watching?" :))) it is the greatest TV show if all time. I have seen it 5 times from start to finish. It is my favourite show along with breaking bad with The Wire being a close second. It is the equivalent of binge watching Goodfellas. Life is too short to watch average shows like 13 reasons and miss out on high quality stuff why etc. If you haven't watched The Sopranos then you haven't experienced the pinnacle of tv. I feel sorry for people these days who will watch anything that is new and big right now when they haven't seen real quality just because it's a bit old.

Don't go in expecting all out Mafia stuff like The Godfather. This is a character study about a complex man balancing being a mob boss with his personal life. Each and every supporting character does an amazing job while Gandolfini gives the best performance ever seen on TV along with Bryan Cranston.

Thanks bro, already on episode 2 and mashallah, great show, breaking bad vibes coming from it. Probably won't binge watch as I have work as well.

Wait till you get to the fifth episode. Do share your thoughts about tony soprano here after watching that episode.

My top five shows of all time:

Six Feet Under
The Sopranos
The Wire
Breaking Bad
True Detective season 1

Hi guys any idea where i can watch the above box sets such as the sopranos or the wire?

Apart from breaking bad are there any on netflix?

Don't mean to trigger anyone but, for the longest time I thought they were the same thing.

Haha. Both started off really well. The only difference is that the wire maintained the consistency till the very last episode while The Sopranos seemed to struggle a bit at the end.Still a great show though and I wouldn't be surprised if people put it ahead of the wire(many do actually)

Six Feet Under

Was a good episode, how it showed us Tony's and his daughters relationship in depth.

Officially hooked, don't care if it doesn't have that much action compared to the godfather or goodfellas, the drama, quality, is worth it.

Best part is Pauline Walnuts. Funny thing is that is how he talks like in real life too.

I was shocked the way he killed the rat. Wasn't expecting when i watched it first time. That showed me the acting talent possessed by gandolfini

There is so much to say about the Sopranos but don't want to spoil it for for you, there is also an older Sopranos thread floating around on timepass, recommend you don't go there!!!

Best part is Pauline Walnuts. Funny thing is that is how he talks like in real life too.

Paulie Walnuts, Uncle Junior, Phil Leotardo, Johnny Sacks, Richie Aprile...so many great characters.

I see Seinfeld is quite underrated here.

Truly a show about nothing. What more do you want from TV?

Sopranos is an epic show with great acting & plots.

Only 1 criticism is how a fat and bald guy attracts hot babes :akhtar

1 of the greatest shows ever. Absolutely love it. Have the box set. It's not just about how the mob works. There is more to it then that.

It's a very good Tv series no doubt.

But just a few things - first season is a bit slow and it's more about character development.

It's still essential you watch the first season but just be a bit patient. From 2nd season onwards the pace really picks up right until season 6.

I will still rate Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad above the Sopranos but only because it had better thrills. Sopranos is fantastic for dark humour and explosive but short violence.

Just to add Season 3 of the sopranos has one of the funniest ever scenes that I have seen on TV - Paulie, Chris and the Russian.

For that scene alone it's worth watch Sopranos.

Honestly I couldn't stop laughing for 15 mins.

1) The Sopranos/Breaking Bad
2) The Wire
3) Game of Thrones
4) The Shield
5) Narcos/Rome/Deadwood

This doesn't include mini series like Band of Brothers and Fargo

I tried to watch the Supranos. Never got addicted. So probably watch 5-6 episodes of season 1.

It will def pick up from season 2.

People need to remember Sopranos is a about the characters and their behaviour that always changes between the gangster mob life and then trying have a normal family life outside of it.

All the actors were great but James Gandolfinii (Tony Soprano) acting has to be some of the best I have seeen.

I have just started watching the wire. Only 1 episode so far but when does it pick up or is it just one pace the whole series ?

It picks up after the first season, same as the sopranos

Pine Barrons, one of the best episodes they made, plus the look Tony gives Bobby when he first see's him in his search and rescue outfit before they set off is hilarious.

True, I've seen that scene about 5 times on YouTube. Epic.

Some of my favorite bits;

Paulie taking the lawnmower
Uncle Junior seeing the fbi at the funeral
Paulie meeting Carmine at a wedding.
Tony chasing Phil Leotardo
Bobby Bacala's father episode
"To the victor belongs the spoils"

It is still ranked by many websites as sopranos best episodes including imdb. I was ROFL at paulie losing his shoes

Just finished. Pity that the ending was left ambiguous but I'm going with Tony being shot.

I don't think I've ever hated a main character more than Tony, the car "accident" was the tipping point.

Ralph made the show for me, enjoyed the character.

I still think breaking bad is better, going to watch the wire this summer break.

How is the shield different from those NCIS type of shows? because on first glance it looks the same

Mine are
The Wire
The Sopranos

The Shield
West Wing/Supernatural(till the 5th season)

I tried hard with The West Wing but it never grabbed me. Very clever but lacking in something. And that oboe theme when a main character said something supportive bugged me.

Those NCIS type shows are all mediocre. The shield is very high quality. Just watch the first episode and you'll see. The shield had me at the edge of my seat throughout

aliasad1998 got caught up in the GOT hype from casuals and fangirls. Otherwise he would never overly rate THAT show and put it in a top 3 !. CGI and cheap pops galore. Now Sporanos are worthy of acclaim.

First 4 seasons of GOT are still amazing. Season 5 was terrible. 6 was ok and 7 was an absolute joke full of fan service and plot armour. I can't put it in the top 5 anymore because almost half the show has been mediocre. GOT does have one of the worst fan bases I've seen. They won't stand any valid criticism of the show. Bunch of idiots

Greatest show ever made along with The Wire. The unique combination of humor, brutality, dialogue and music; pretty much like the TV version of Goodfellas.

Only downside is everything you ever watch will pale in comparison after viewing these two shows.

Speaking of this, has anyone had a chance to watch The Deuce who is created by David Simon, the director of Wire?

I found breaking bad to be superior to the sopranos

I woukdn’t say any of those shows are better than other others. The standard of writing is extraordinarily high. Just enjoy that we live in the greatest era of television!

I liked season 7 more than any since 3. Yes they seemed to be able to get from Dragonstone to beyond the Wall and back super quick but I can forgive that.

The show is on Amazon Prime now so would be worth getting back into.

I remember watching the first few episodes long time back and just never got into it. Considering its reputation as one of the best TV shows of all times, it deserves another shot. Problem is so little time and so much to watch. Will see.

Yeah perhaps a case could have been made for a top 5 initially but not now, 7 was beyond awful; all I ever saw was so much overwhelming praise and then watched it a month after it had released (kinda forced myself to) and was disappointed.

Nice one mate! IMMY69 another one to add to your watchlist on prime

Actually we still have to pay for Sopranos :)) maybe Amazon will add it to their library at some point

He got charges in real life too. In fact iirc he was a gangster in real life before the show.

Not really.. often known to be the greatest comedy of all time wouldn’t be considered as being underrated

Have you seen boardwalk empire or peaky blinders?

Gave up on Boardwalk Empire after three seasons. Found it hard to follow, and I didn’t much identify with the characters except perhaps Van Alden.

See all of Peaky Blinders. Pretty good, though season one was best by a long way.

Hey bro, you were spot on about the wire, I really enjoyed it, much more than the sopranos or even breaking bad.

How does the shield compare to the wire? Why do you list deadwood so high?

The shield is very good & extremely intense cop show. It was the first english show that i watched back in 2009. Its main characater vic mackey was very much like tony soprano.

Woke up this morning...Got yourself a gun" :)

So many awesome one liners from the show. Pity can't post them here.

here's one

why don't you get out of here before i shove your "awesome one liners from the show" quotations book up your fat ... "

“I wonder what’s French-Canadian for, I grew up without a mother? Sacre bleu! Where is me mama?”

Storms out.

Followed by The Kinks’ “I’m Not Like Everything Else”.

When Paulie and Christopher visit the Serbian and Paulie admires his entertainment system...

Paulie: "Tv, Hi-fi, Dvd... What the f is this?"

Christopher: "It's a universal remote"

Paulie: turns to Serbian "A universal remote, you were probably wiping your a$$ bear handed before you came to this country"
:)))

I loved it when Paulie repeated his jokes to Tony to gain his approval :))

I should be ashamed of this But I was really happy that he ****** janice off by saying that. God I hated that character. She had so many shades of livia in her

Tony's dreams were always awesome to watch. So random & absurd

Junior "He never had the makings of a varsity athlete"

I laughed so loud at that line

Everybody she dated wound up dead.

Richie, Ralphie, Bobby.

When the guys find out that Vito was killed and Bobby mentions he had a pool cue sodomized...

*A moment of starry silence*

Christopher: “Lovers quarrel maybe”?

Tbh, that whole Vito being gay angle was hilarious.

So many one-liners that you can’t mention.

I loved the accents esp Tony's. The way he pronounced Uncle Ju.
Thank you Sopranos for making a bald fat look handsome.
Rest in peace James Gandolfini. What a man.

Agreed.

Everybody who worked with him vouches for his professionalism and ability.

But I believe that the role might have played a role in killing him. He was losing weight for “The Mexican” but David Chase said he became too thin for a mob boss.

Sad but atleast his kid has a 70 million dollar fortune.

Still doesn’t make up for losing your father.

As a side note, The Sopranos is probably the best online community.

Do you know he was the one behind creation of HBO's The Night Of and was even going to play the role of Jack Stone which eventually went to John Turturro.
IIRC Riz Ahmed even thanked him while receiving Emmy.

Riz is a class act.

TV is mostly bland nowadays.

Netflix has the only quality shows.

Oh the Vito angle was funny.

When christopher informs tony about vito in the bada bing, tony after hearing the allegations says to everyone " Come on let us take it in the back". Then the guy with chris says something funny which i obviously can't post here but man that was one funny scene.

Also the made guy from phil leotardo's crew breaking silvio's balls about guys from new jersey being gays was hilarious.

Which made guy?

Beansie?

Tell you what struck me most about it was it brought New Jersey to life, previously I had never really given it a second thought. Not in a glamourised air-brushed way either, but the real nuts and bolts of the city and how it worked. Probably The Wire did the same for Balitmore, although obviously that was specifically the grimy underside.

Breaking balls :))
Man that show taught me a lot of Italian American slang words.

I learned about this breaking balls term from goodfellas when the frank vincent (the phil leotardo actor on sopranos) tells joe pesci to go get his freakin shinebox.

David chase was a big fan of goodfellas & lot of soprano scene/characters are influenced by that movie.

Oh yeah Goodfellas. Probably half of the actors from the Sopranos were part of that masterpiece before. Paulie, Chrissy, Dr Melfi to name a few.
Loved the scene you mentioned esp De Niro's part "No, no, no you insulted him a little bit, you gotta little bit out of order yourself, you insulted him a little bit" :))

Fantastic acting.

You know that fat c######### says I look like the Shah of Iran :))
