if rohit sharma does well in the world cup semi and the final. He has a chance to break into top 5. Mazing player.

Lack of Lara is bothering me for new-age high average/high strike-rate players.

Phenomenal bat in his time.

Early to mid 90s Lara was up there with Viv.

Later he declined once he stopped opening.

Not like he was forced not to open. It was a genuine decline imho.

with the number of chases he has done successfully , he is already number 1. World cup performance will just be another feather in his cap.

JAMODI's count now?

VK may end up #1, but as of today he is not.
RP was a beast. WC or not.

Kohli
Sachin
Richards(played a better part of his career against teams who didn't know how to play odis)
Ricky ponting
Abd

1. Viv Richards - unreal stats for his time, world cup final performance

2. Virat Kohli - 41 ODI 100s and he has not even played 250 ODIs yet!

3. Sachin Tendulkar - Unmatched longevity, holds all batting records

4. Michael Bevan - The most clutch ODI batsman of all time

5. MS Dhoni - First wicket keeper batsman to average 50+

Out of current players, Rohit Sharma and Jos Buttler have the potential to end up among the top 5 ODI batsmen of all time.

Top 5 in alphabetical order
AB, Kohli, Ponting, Sachin, Virat.

Hard to argue for anyone else.

Ponting at 4th and Sachin is ahead of Kohli at the moment.

Reasons being:

Sachin was playing Aussie bowlers while often being the lone warrior in most of his matches whereas Ponting was playing Indian bowlers, as well having an ATG team as support.

Kohli right now is yet to finish his career. I can't really use the argument that he didn't get to feast on his own Indian bowlers during his early years because the current Indian bowlers are the best in the world at the moment. He played half his career when Indian bowlers were average and the last 2-3 years they have been excellent in ODIs.

I rank players a lot by other special factors like these because for example, I think its pretty obvious that someone like Saeed Anwar would have averaged way less if he was an English batsman because then he would have had to face Wasim, Saqlain, Akhtar, etc, just like Ponting would have averaged less facing McGrath, Warne, Lee.

I hope this makes sense.

1. Sachin
2. Viv
3. Kohli
4. AB

And the next 5,

6. Dhoni
7. Bevan
8. Dean Jones
9. Lara (for his peak in the mid 90s)
10. Rohit
