Sri Lanka are looking to pick themselves up as the series against Zimbabwe begins this week in Galle after a string of poor performances prompted their coach to quit.

Angelo Mathews leads the Sri Lankans who take on Zimbabwe in the first of five one-day internationals on Friday as they look to get over their first-round exit in the Champions Trophy.

South African Graham Ford quit as coach last week with assistant Nic Pothas taking over in an interim capacity for the clashes against Zimbabwe, whose tour will end with a single test match next month in Colombo.

Ford's exit just 15 months into his four-year contract adds to Sri Lanka's problems on and off the field, which are hampering preparations for the 2019 World Cup.

"It is beyond our control. What happens outside the cricket field, we don't think a lot about it," Mathews said on Tuesday.

"Fordy has been fantastic, one of the very best in the business. Sorry to see him go. But, we have to move on and look ahead to this series."

Veteran paceman Lasith Malinga was this week handed a one-year suspended ban after being found guilty of insulting a minister but has been retained in the 13-man ODI squad.

The speedster has been docked 50 percent of his match fee from Friday's opening game in Galle and is under six-month probation after comparing the country's sports minister to a "monkey".

The minister – Dayasiri Jayasekera – had accused Sri Lankan players of being too fat after the team failed to reach the Champions Trophy semifinals in England.

Malinga, who returned from injury to the 50-over side in England, struggled and took only three wickets in three matches.

The islanders have just won five of their 20 one-day games since August 2016 with two coming against hosts Zimbabwe during a tri-nation series triumph in November.

STRUGGLING ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe, on their first tour of Sri Lanka since 2001-2002, are led by Graeme Cremer and are trying to build momentum as they look ahead to the World Cup qualifying tournament in April next year.

The African nation has slipped to 11th, a place above bottom-ranked Ireland, in the International Cricket Conference ODI rankings. They lost a five-match series at home to Afghanistan 3-2 in February.

Star player Hamilton Masakadza, who has played only one of Zimbabwe's five one-day games this year, is expected to bolster the batting line-up on tricky Sri Lankan pitches.

Cremer's leg-spin, offspinner Sikandar Raza and left-arm bowler Sean Williams will lead the spin attack on surfaces that should turn.

Coach Heath Streak blamed Zimbabwe's dismal form on a "lack of cricket" as financial and administrative hurdles hinder progress.

"The problem is the volume or the lack of cricket that we have had," said the former captain. "We have got to play good competitive cricket for countries to want to play against us."

The first two ODIs will be at Galle, the first limited-overs matches there in 17 years. The remaining three games will be at the refurbished stadium in Hambantota. The only test will be at the Premadasa Stadium in Colombo starting July 14.

Squads

Sri Lanka (for first two ODIs): Angelo Mathews (captain), Upul Tharanga (vice captain), Niroshan Dikwella, Danushka Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis, Asela Gunaratne, Wanidu Hasaranga, L. Sandakan, Akila Dananjaya, Nuwan Pradeep Fernando, Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera, Lahiru Madushanka.

Zimbabwe: Graeme Cremer (captain), Solomon Mire, Hamilton Masakadza, Craig Ervine, Sean Williams, Ryan Burl, Peter Moor, Sikandar Raza Butt, Tendai Chatara, Christ Mpofu, Donald Tiripano, Richard Ngarava, Wellington Masakadza, Malcolm Waller, Chamu Chibhabha, Tarisai Musakanda.

Sri Lanka potentially have a strong batting side. Their bowling is their weak link.

Should be 5-0 in the ODI series if the weather allows it.

I've always been a Zimbabwe fan but unfortunately, their team is in the worst phase a cricket team can ever be. Wish they could get back the quality cricketers that have left for other countries. Even the Curran brother's and that lad in NZ who ripped us apart are from Zim. They've got loads of talent, just needs to stay at home.

Even with Sri Lanka in turmoil after Ford's resignation, they should have too much for a Zimbabwe side that is declining precipitously.

I love watching Craig Ervine bat. He is a quality batsman in their ranks. Averages 30+ in tests & ODIs.

Surely even this poor Sri Lanka side will rip apart Zimbabwe. This has to be the lowest of lows for the Zimboks.

There is a lot of racism in Zimbabwe cricket.Maybe a reason why players(and their families)move abroad for better opportunities.Obviously pay is much better too.

Yep. Its disappointing. Cricket was a common sport among the whites of Zim and since the economic crisis, they've all left Zim. Also the tyrant Mugabe took away all their land.

Sri Lanka‘s explosive batsman Kusal Pererawill be out of the Zimbabwe due to the hamstring injury that he picked up during ICC Champions Trophy earlier this month. Perera was one of the stars of Sri Lanka’s win over India at The Oval. He sustained the injury in the same game and had to walk out retired hurt for 44. In the previous match, he struck an unbeaten 47 against South Africa. Sri Lanka could not get his service for the must-win game against Pakistan. The southpaw was replaced in the squad by Dhananjaya De Silva.

Sri Lanka’s campaign met a group-stage hiatus after their loss to Pakistan. The 26-year-old was not included in the squad for the first 2 ODIs against Zimbabwe. Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews had said, “Kusal Perera is out for the whole series. The physiotherapist says it is 8 to 12 weeks if I am not mistaken. He’s also ‘touch & go’ for the Indian series as well so we will have to closely monitor him.” Mathews said prior to the start of the Zimbabwe series.”

This is not the first time Perera suffered a similar injury. He was ruled out of the ODI series against Bangladesh earlier this year due to a similar hamstring injury. However, he recovered to take part in the T20Is. Sri Lanka take on Zimbabwe at Galle on Friday for the first ODI.

Sri Lanka eyes elephant menace at stadium

Colombo - Sri Lanka is to deploy game wardens to stop wild elephants straying onto the pitch when the country hosts Zimbabwe for a series of one-day internationals at the Hambantota stadium.

Experts will be on hand for all three ODI games at the 35 000-capacity stadium, which is next to an elephant sanctuary, a wildlife official said on Monday.

The stadium was built in 2009 under former president Mahinda Rajapakse, who was from Hambantota, but has hosted only a handful of matches because of its remote location and high maintenance costs.

"There had been a few instances when elephants broke through the fence and invaded the pitch at night," said the official, who asked not to be named.

"A jungle patch starts about 100 metres from the stadium and we are deploying 10 wardens to make sure that fans don't stray into that area and provoke the elephants," he said by telephone from Hambantota.

He said there was a herd of about 25 elephants roaming the area, 240 kilometres south of Colombo, posing a potential threat to fans.

It is not the first time wildlife has disrupted games at Hambantota - swarms of wasps that have taken up residence there have also caused problems.

The last ODI played at Hambantota was two years ago. Following a recent refurbishment, Sri Lanka Cricket scheduled the final three ODI matches against Zimbabwe at Hambantota.

The games will decide the series winner after the two sides notched a victory each in the first two games played at Galle.

Colombo: Angelo Mathews is reconsidering his role as Sri Lanka captain after the one-day series loss to Zimbabwe which he considers one of the lowest points in his career, the 30-year-old has said.

Sikandar Raza`s stellar all-round display guided Zimbabwe to their first one-day international series win over hosts Sri Lanka with a nervous three-wicket victory in the fifth and final match at Hambantota on Monday.

Zimbabwe, ranked 11th, had never beaten Sri Lanka before this series and their triumph is all the more special after they lost to Scotland last month and were beaten by Afghanistan earlier this year.

"It`s one of the lowest points in my career, and a hard one to swallow," Mathews said after the 3-2 series defeat.

"Everything went against us, from the toss to misreading the wicket. But there are no excuses. At the end of the day we were not good enough to beat them. They played better cricket."

Sri Lanka`s form in the 50-over format has been dismal since the 2015 World Cup and they have suffered series defeats against England, South Africa, Australia and drew against Bangladesh at home. They also exited this year`s Champions Trophy in the group stage.

"Still haven`t thought about stepping down," Mathews said. "There`s time. I`ll give it a bit more thought and talk to the selectors. I haven`t decided anything yet.

"We have not been consistent. The pressure is on all of us. The more we lose, the more pressure we are under. There is no solution for that and the only solution is winning. We try to win games, but we commit too many mistakes."

Sri Lanka, the 1996 world champions, have left the door open for West Indies to pip them in the race for automatic qualification for the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales.

The top eight ranked sides, including hosts England, will qualify directly with the rest having to go through a qualification tournament to make the 10-team event.

Sri Lanka are ranked eighth and will host India for a five-match series while West Indies, ranked a place below, play the same number of matches against England before the cutoff date of Sept. 30.

"We have an India series coming up, but before that, we have the test against Zimbabwe to talk about," Mathews said. "The Indian series will be even tougher.

"In a small period we have to fix our problems. As a team we did do the training, but nothing is working in the middle."

Well after Zimbabwe defied all expectations in the ODI series, they could run Sri Lanka close in the Test.
