What's new

The Zulqarnain Haider Story

So we got two camps:

The "what a fine patriotic, gentlemen, lets throw him a parade" camp

vs.

The "he's a stupid naive liar, how dare he shame us" camp

Game on folks :akhtar

Edit: his knock was by no means match winning, this was one game where everyone from 2-10 contributed (#1 was Farhat). Wahab's knock got us close, Zoni was frantic and all over the place. did a good job of rotating the strike, but not a match winning knock.

It is. You dont get it.

Had he taken those names, the mafia or whoever would have been onto his family. But now since he has NOT taken those names, you could say his family is kind of safe.

Theres a reason hes trying to arrange visas for family, mate.

As far as my knowledge of Mafia goes...if they want to get him...it wont be difficult for them to hit-him even in UK...unless of course UK provides him with new identity

Seriously, I could never imagine just how crazed/paranoid/conspiracy theorist people are.

Look at the evidence so far...

Zoni wins the 4th ODI
Recieves threats
Leaves to UK as he feels he can't trust anyone in the setup.
Leaves his fam
Is clearly unstable.

And he does all of this for a pasport to a country he has visited regularly in the past 10years?

Aah, but on the last 3 balls he could have got himself out to hand the match to SA

I have a feeling that Zaqi was asked by the pcb officials or one of the mafia members to lose the game but he refused to do so. I just read his status on facebook and although the english isn't very good but using a slight of sense you can clearly see that he is trying to say that one man isn't happy with him hitting the winning runs. I guess he was threatened if he refused to lose the game and left the team knowing his life is in threat and also texted a journalist from GEO saying to provide security for his family.

Zaqi has a very good personality and is very passionate towards cricket and strongly against match fixing because I remember in his previous status on f'book he did say that he was proud of ICC with the strict rules, my mind is saying something is not right, the whole pakistan cricket team is corrupted.

your mind is corrupt to even think of it

Thats true, he did get his partner run out though didn't he? I'm not accusing him of anything, I don't think it was fixed at all. If anything, they could have been referring to todays game but I really doubt it.

^ He didn't; Riaz was a tool, cos Zoni could never make that.

Riaz was half way down the pitch when Zoni hardly set off (Rightly )

From a cricketing perspective, you could say they shoulda went for it considering the tightness of the situation. And Zoni sacrificing himself for Riaz would've made sense as Riaz got us close.

But chaal, enough, let's see what new twist tomorrow brings :yk

GOAT - Naah, they needed 3 from 4 balls; No need for a single off what was a defensive block.

True, rehene do, and yeah Hope we hear from Zoni soon.

Not reading too much into it at this stage but did anyone notice how he was showing his fist after hiting the wining run
it almost came across as he was sending a clear message to someone .

A source told The Sun: "Zulqarnain has hinted the real reason he was sent home is because he refused to go along with match-fixing plans. His injury was so minor he could have continued to play, but he was not allowed.

"He would never deliberately lose a match or drop a ball but he is also very aware that it leaves him in a difficult and dangerous position."

Haider's older brother Reza yesterday said of the death threats: "He was worried and concerned about his family's safety."

as an aside; can we start an event prediction thread (in irony - Like Armando Ianucci/ Chris Morris)

Watching paksitan cricket is like watching a star plus serial.

seriously though.

what needs to be done before we see a major overhaul of pakistan cricket?? a murder?

someone needs to step in..and needs to step in fast. perhaps a protest needs to be done. we are a laughing stock of the world. we have our heads down and people are rubbing their feet on our faces.

enough is enough. the PCB have demonstrated they dont have a clue. someone needs to shwo them the door.

The question is who???
I dont see anything changing, from anywhere. Zardari is set, and that means :ibutt is going to be there. The ICC cant remove butt or overhaul the PCB. The fans and players are powerless. The only thing I can see happening at the moment is that the ICC are going to ban Pakistan from international cricket for 5 years or so.

He has got all the media attention on him therefore I think its safe to say that he will be ok.

this is where the ICC needs to step in.

I am for ICC taking over PCB and invading our cricket till we have people with brains running our cricket.

According to Inti,he was with the Team all the time,Even if Zoni recieved some death threats on the phone ,he should have first Inform Inti sahib,so he can contact Security forces,According to Tauqeer Zia,He will never play for Pakistan, created another controversy

That's the End of Zulqarnain.

One thing that struck me listening to his brother's interview is that he insisted everything is discussed transparently and in front of the media. In other words no deals behind closed doors with the PCB. That much I would agree with, whatever his motives.

This is the pcb, this will by no way end his career, this will probably keep him in mind for future selections.

Yeh ho kya raha hai?!!

When will Zoni open his mouth?!! Until he does that, we'll keep reading some "out-of-the-world" stories!

Im not sure if this has already been posted on this thread but Sky news are now reporting that he is indeed seeking political asylum in the UK. He told immigration officials that his life was under threat, immigration officials subsequently granted him a one month visa as his case is processed.

Officials were apparently very kind to him and suggested that he take up the services of a counsellor as well. Zulqernain also said that he could not afford to hire a lawyer.

^^ Toh sab nationality lene ka chakar tha kya?

Well we can't be sure. The details that Sky news are giving out was that he was in immigration custody for a whole 4 hours while he told them his case and only then did they grant him a one month visa and that he has put in a formal political asylum application.

Thanks :) My comment was partially tongue-in-cheek.

The whole set-up is too bizarre for words.

Zoni scores 88 in a test matc, gets dropped from the team and sent back home.

Zoni scores some runs and helps his team win, he runs away from team and lands in UK.

This cannot be a coincidence. Looks like a very complex issue this. I hope the poor guy does not become the target of any mafia groups.

More little updates from Sky news:

They are reporting that Zulqarnain said he had recieved threats for the 4th and the 5th ODIs in Dubai and that he is saying that he did not act upon what those threats were telling him to do.

For those hoping Zoni the hero is going to come forward in the next few days and name and shame players/bookies/matchfixers, boy are you guys in for some serious disappointment! :)))

I don't think he even knows himself who is involved because he has already stated that pretty clearly in his interview with Geo.. The only thing he'd be able to bring forward is Why did he not trust the management and Who were the people he was running away from

And expect whatever he says to not make much sense too.

Zoni - you better come up with some seriously BIG and meaningful explanation for whatever you did or else, I am going to bang your (no, actually my) head on a wall. :po:

That's really not fair. The biggest and the most useful contribution in that match was made by Farhat.

Okay. Latest News:
Zulqarnain Haider has announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket: ARY News

IF zoni is right, and by virtue of the fact that he hasn't sought help from PCB and Pak government then that points a finger at them for involvement in match/ spot fixing - I can see this leading to Pak being booted out of the world cup because it clearly hasn't got things in order, in fact stupidity and corruption are appearing to be rampant

That was going to happen anyway after his dismal performance behind the stumps!!

For that to happen he'll have to name names, which it shouldn't be too hard to do with his inside knowledge. More likely he'll sell his story to the NOTW then use the money to buy a taxi.

I hope he has the minstrels to name names - it really would be an awesome kick in the knackers for the PCB and Pak government, one that would put them on their knees!!!

And if he is wrong, you do realize that he has cost us big time by "leading to Pak being booted out of the world cup" by giving the impression that "it clearly hasn't got things in order, in fact stupidity and corruption are appearing to be rampant"?

Nonsense - what are you on?

Would you rather the fixing carries on ? or gets Fixed (Sorted)

If true - He deserves a medal of honour from Pak for promoting its Izzat!

normally Pakistanis struggle to get any Visas to the UK now days, but when it comes to how Pakistan can be insulted in any capacity, Visa granted immediately. Nice.

If he's wrong then he's a dead man walking isn't he??? to jeopardise his own life, his family, and his nation - I have a feeling he will have thought about it for a few seconds before embarking on his plan of action, don't you?

No, I dont.

Let's see what eventuates first. With what has been coming out of Pak cricket lately I wouldn't count out anything. I just find it hard to beleive he couldn't have gone down a different route.

He should have informed ICC not flying England knowing we don't have other wk.Razzaq played match winning knock ,Wahab Played Match winning Knock,Hafeez bowled well whole Series but none of them got these kinds of threats.Even Watson,Lee and Johsnon got death threats from the bookies but they didn't gave a damn about him but informed ICC at least.
And now he is asking political asylum in Eng?*** what a loser

reading some of the comments above im not surprised paksitan is the mess it is and uk pakistanis are at the lowest rungs of the acheivement ladder...sick and pathetic but it seems those are words that should be sewn onto the paksitani flag to describe the current generation..!!

coming back to Zoni. I think this incident is a watershed. Zoni has taken the rbave move of standing upto the bookies and good on him. A man of integrity. I dont think this will lead to us getting booted out of cricket, thats just alarmist nonsense. It does highlight the problems in international cricket. The BCCI and Indian govt must be warned to control its bookies or face sanctions. Banning Pakistan will acheive nothing but the loss of the second largest cricket playing nation in the world. The world of cricket can ill afford this in the long run!

Zoni has taken a good step and others must be encouraged to come forward. The ICC must now investigate and Zoni should put in a complaint to the dubai police.

No pakistani player should be allowed to go to India without official business permission from the PCB. No paksitani players should be allowed a mobile phone in their hotel room. This must be enforced. You get to make a call via a payphone or borrow inti's..itni undhi kya hay kay hur duffa fone pay baitho!! our players are now under threat and we must deal with this threat.

Zoni was tapped up because he is a youngster from a poor family and the bookies probably felt they could intimidate him! Init must really increase the controls on teh team. anyone who doesnt like it can go back to pakistan..also people like malik who have extensive links to india must never play for pakistan again. Hafeez should also be banned from appearing in that film he is gonna appear in..eevry player should egt an increase in wages and banned permamnently from the ipl or otehr indian based league..

we have lost a good young player who played with a big heart and was a real fighter. Zoni my prayers are with you!

I agree his action is difficult to understand but then how cool and calm would anyone act if such serious threats were made - we all react differently - he finds himself in the thick of things and acted how he thought best!
aussies are backed by an honest board and government, he (and any other honest person in Pak) is surrounded by parasites out to sell their mothers and nation for a quick buck - that's the difference!

What made Zulqarnain Haider stage the Dubai drama? My feelings tell me that it is all an act to get Assylum in the UK for himself and his family. As everyone can see even though he is very gritty the talent just was not there and this would have been his last series as his weakness would have been exposed.

My message to Zulqarnain Haider If you ever get around to read this: I am a british citizen and have been living in the UK for many years with my family, i would have very happily swapped with you. Playing for Pakistan and the honour to represent your country should have been more important than a Red British Passport. Many may believe you and i also believe that corruption is high in the Pakistan team but i do not buy your story it smells of RAT.

The bookies know that if you control the wickie, you can have a large influence on the game as they did with kamran (that's my personal and strong belief) - I for one will never forgive the sydney test fiasco and cannot accept all the excuses for his poor performance - the fact that he has been persisted with for so long suggests that he is being protected by fellow accomplices in the team and management!

And now PCB has banned him for life. Says he hasn't contacted them, isn't answering to their calls, such a big contorversy and he isn't informing them about anything.

Mr. Zoni has burned all his bridges and will probably not get asylum either. Tsk tsk.

I agree with you entirely, if he is found to have concocted this whole thing then he has royally shafted himself and deserves his comeuppance

I only hold on to the small chance that this may lead to cracking the hold of corruption on the Pak team

I'm afraid you've let your emotions get the better of you. Take a deep breath and consider things rationally.

Why didn't Zoni notify the team management or his teammates of the threat? Why didn't he notify the ICC, whose HQ was only a few minutes drive away? Why wasn't a complaint filed with the Dubai police? Does he think everyone wanted him dead?

And if you feel your family is under threat, do you run away to seek asylum or do you get on the first flight to lahore to be with your family?

The whole thing is just bizarre.

Have you ever received death threats?

How do you know others havent received death threats?

Does everyone react the same way to receiving death threats?

Were the death threats the same type of threats?

Lets wait and see!

I shall add my two pence worth..........

I have no idea what the exact facts and allegations are that Zulqarnain is making. My instincts are telling me that he has been threatened by somebody / group regarding not playing ball when it comes to match fixing.

My instincts are telling me that he has gone to the media such as GEO as that is the best way to protect his backside. By going to the media first, he does not have to worry about a false statement from the PCB etc. To me it also shows that Zulqarnain has no faith in the PCB. Who blames him!! We are all the first to criticise this mickey mouse organisation so why should he go them or team mates for such a serious matter.

At this stage, I see no reason why a rising star will damage his career for a bit of money from journalists. T20 has big money these days and would certainly in the long term pay more then a £100k fee from News of the World.

With regards to the ICC/ ACU, I have no idea whether they have any involvement. My instincts are telling me yes but again like everybody else, we await confirmation.

Zulqarnain has not mentioned any players so we should not go down that path!!

The most important thing to me is that whatever has happened, I would rather that Zulqarnain deal with his grievance in this way then allow the PCB to lead with their circus a la Ijaz Butt or even what the UK high commissioner did in recent times.

I understand why he went to the UK and not Pakistan. It is well known that there are powerful Indian bookmakers / gangsters who have a strong hold in UAE and even Pakistan. This can be reflected by one of Javed Miandad's children being married to one of the gangster's children!! The UK may not be crime free but he still has a much better chance of survival then in Pakistan or UAE. By going to GEO, he has put the spotlight on his family, hence making any attacks on them increasingly difficult. I would probably do Exactly the same if it helps keep them safe.

He again has no reason to lie about him fearing for his family's safety. This is above all, more important then fame, success and money.

Does this include you?

Seriously, get off your high horse and learn how to handle an opposing view in a discussion. Do not go around making pointless and insulting generalisations that have no relation to the topic under discussion whatsoever.

If you feel so strongly about the low achievements of UK Pakistanis, by all means go ahead and start the thread in timepass and you can vent your anger/frustartion and hopefully in the end for some suggestions on how to improve things.

With how things are folding right now, it seems to me he devised a plan to use the current predicament of Pakistan cricket to his advantage and trying to make a fast buck as his career was all but over after this series. Thats what sickening and galling for me.

He has let the "bookies off", if there were any, good sir. Instead of lettting authorities know in secrecy who's contacting him or what's happening, he has opened his mouth to the media.

Do you really think the bookie that msged him or whoever is msging him will sit around now? They will scramble away and change their numbers, addresses/names.

Drama Queens the lot of them why could he not stay in Dubai the ICC head quarters are just around the corner.

I really hope you are right but if Zulqarnain actually provides names and solid evidence I'll be surprised. He is now in a great position top blow the lid so let's see if anything comes of it.

Very very well summarised!

Does this include you?

With how things are folding right now, it seems to me he devised a plan to use the current predicament of Pakistan cricket to his advantage and trying to make a fast buck as his career was all but over after this series. Thats what sickening and galling for me.

His career was over? He is hardly 20 year old. If Misbah can make a comeback after being so old as the captain, he definitely had no cause to worry. Particulalry since his test performances was great!

He had his whole life left in front of him to make a career. He iwll definitely lose more than gain from his actions

How has he let the bookies off exactly. He is stating in the media that he and his family are in danger because of them and is issuing a cry for help to the necessary authorities. This is one of the few facts!!

If Zulqarnain went in secret, then perhaps he was concerned that the bookies had infiltrated the relevant body such as the PCB or ICC. Going by the facts, he has done the right thing by going public as who do you really trust out there. Cricket corruption is clearly rife according to Pakistan Players, SA Players, Australian Players and many international coaches.

Whether the bookie sits around or not is not Zulqarnain's problem!!! He is worried about his safety and his families, not about collating evidence and ensuring the arrest of the bookmaker.

Whether the bookmaker runs or not, if what Zulqarnain says is true then the evidence he can provide will be very useful. There are such things as extradition treaties, if required!

Please think your post through on whose job it is to clean up cricket. It is certainly not Zulqarnains. His primary job is to protect the safety of his family and himself.

He had a terrible series behind the stumps and his batting is nothing to shout home about.... he is not the answer Pakistan are looking for and my feeling is that he realised this too. ... and he is 24 years old and not 20.

Dude so much has been said about kamran involvement in fixing. And we know that he has been investigated for at least three matches by ICC and has been cleared. I dont think ICC will clear him three time on the lack of evidence. Now either he is entirely and purely innocent or he has full support by ICC in fixing matches.

What has Zulqarnain's peformance and form got to do with anything about this topic?

How have you come to the theory that Zulqarnain has done all of this for money as part of a master plan?

Surely we should go by the facts and what are known?

He may not be the best bastman in the world but there is nothing to suggest that he would not have a long term career.
