There are lows in cricket and then theres Pakistan's performance against Zimbabwe in this series, despite being at full strength and playing at home.

But the good news is that this is quite a blessing. Last time, these two teams played , Pakistan whitewashed Zim , only to then get destroyed in the Asia Cup and get whitewashed by England and Australia afterwards.

This loss should jolt the management and the preparations for NZ tour would be more meticulous . An overconfident Pakistan can be smashed to pieces by even lowly teams but a hurt, wounded Pakistan is a scary sight. Thoughts?

I agree with OP here. Losing to Zimbabwe is very disheartening but the quality is still there.

Kane Williamson and their men should be scared of this hurt, wounded Pakistan team who will come hard on them and make their life tougher and harder in their home conditions.

The number of wake-up calls and blessings in disguise Pakistan gets are unparalleled in world sporting history.

Yes....nice post but u need to remove the tumor otherwise it will spread to the whole body

Nothing wake up here. Under Misbah we will be complete whitewash unless rain saves a match or two.PCB knows this so as Misbah and team management.
We were lucky not to loose this series. Zimbabwe should won the first match easily. Raza and William gifted their wickets.

New Zealand should win that series easily.

We only have Babar/Shaheen and a bunch of mediocre players. It is unfair to expect much from this team. Then there is Misbah

Guys I know losing to Zimbabwe is bad, but it was not a full strength team, just a bit of experimentation going on. I think Haris needs to work on his bowling a bit but Husnain has showed he has the most potential. Haider Ali should definitely be persisted with too. The major problem we have is the openers though. Perhaps Babar can open and we slot Haris in at 3?

Remember in this series we had no Shadab (who would play ahead of Ifthikhar) as he outshines him in bowling and his batting has improved substantially. Haris would be a regular batsman. We would have the experience of Amir coming back. Hafeez and his purple patch form would be back too

The only wake-up call I can see is the PCB hierarchy realising the baffling and lethargic appointment of Misbah. Hopefully they see the errors of there ways and appoint someone worthy and qualified.

I don’t think Zimbabwe were at full strength either. Main seamers missing due to injury while their selection issues make ours look insignificant.

For Misbah the wake up call means adding more "seniors" to the team. He will be calling back, Hafeez, Malik , Sarfraz and Rahat-------------- hope not.

:ds

There is no ODI in NZ, thankfully ..... but, not sure about T20 - it'll be a coup if PCB can resist putting couple of T20s in the mix.

I think, it's going to be tough tour for PAK - almost as ugly as the AUS tour. Babar actually is a far better ODI batsman than Test batsman .... and it took a MoTS show from him to edge past ZIM, and I must say ZIM without Jarvis & Chatara. He'll be ALONE in Test series in NZ, don't think Haris will be fit for 5 days game either .... and the bowling doesn't have Asif-Amir any more for NZ tracks, Yasir won't be effective there either. May be the two guys missing from ZIM series will balance it out in SENA - Shadab Khan & Faheem Ashraf....... we can definitely hope.

OP has a point. The first Odi was a wake up call when 14th ranked Zimbabwe almost won the game, so Pakistan woke up and crushed them in the next game and went back to sleep in the 3rd odi in which they got another wake up call.

May be Pakistan team should buy a Amazon Alexa or Google home to give them wake up calls instead.

Very nice post but we only have 2 world class players and 3/4 potential world class players. Add to that a mediocre coach Misbah ul Haq.

Yes, wake up call for Pakistan. Kick Misbah out or keep losing to the likes of Zimbabwe, and fail to win any game against other sides.

there are no wake up calls in pak cricket, pak lost a test against zimbabwe, and the team is arguably no better today (in terms of professionalism).

pak needs a long drawn out effort to instill professionalism from grass roots, misbah made a load of blunders in this series, but there is a real lack of mental strength in the team, thats not really his fault.

Pretty much this summed it up for me.

EVERY SINGLE TIME when we say, this is the ABSOLUTE ROCK BOTTOM for Pak cricket, we find out, there are every more lower levels to be achieved.

This wake up call has been going on for several years now.

Maybe one day Pakistan cricket will actually wake up.

Nah...we're just an average side in odis, no world beaters except Babar and may be Afridi.
Passable international players in Fakhar and Riz (will get better) and the odd player with potential.
So, based on this assessment, no need to kid ourselves with 'wake up call'...because this is as good as it gets.

Like New Zealand were sitting watching pakistan We all know how good pakistan is . Boult Fergusion Southie will be looking forward to adds to wicket tally.

Hopefully Wasim Khan will wake up and realise we have no future with Misbah at the helm. There's no point waiting for him to fail in NZ to justify the sacking. The list of blunders up to this point is damning enough.

A Test series should comprise of a minimum of 3 tests. These 2 Test series are so annoying. I mean Test cricket is always welcome, but a minimum of 3 Tests is required in a series. Cut back on those good for nothing meaningless T20 matches instead.

Will be rooting for Pakistan.
New Zealand is the only team between india and WTC finals, if pakistan draws this series it will be highly beneficial for us.

I think it's more than enough, considering the mauling New Zealand will subject our boys to. I won't be surprised if there's a triple century somewhere in there, and a few ten-wicket hauls. NZ boys will be itching to make some records.

Wake Up call?

I’d be pleasantly surprised if we even compete in NZ. Our batting apart from Babar is hopeless, Yasir has been struggling to get wickets in the QeA let alone overseas, Abbas has been ineffective for the last 12-18 months as he’s lost a yard of pace and Shaheen and Naseem have played like 15 tests between each other.

Or may be we should submit to the fact that we arent producing players who can compete with the top teams.

You wanna see Pak get whitewashed eh? :yk

2 test series is enough for us. We are not competitive enough. I mean look at our batting lineup (minus Babar). It is a joke. It's not test quality.

This could be a painful tour and a tour that ends a few international careers.

As someone said, no ODI on the tour and we haven't yet started the T20's.

Though Misbah will be relieved to have Azhar, Asad and Yasir going on the flight. He may even throw in Imran Khan snr and Rahat Ali to make himself feel even better.

It's extremely important for PCT to perform well in NZ, at least compete ball by ball; otherwise long-term impact will be catastrophic. PAK is facing the most unwanted situation in sports - a fast declining team/nation with great past, means the fans/mass people/next generation have a set expectations - unless the team keeps them interested, that mass interest will die out and that'll be the end of it. This is where I always bring the story of Hungary Soccer - once superpower of soccer, now languishing in third/4th tier of Euro Soccer and once the Budapest Quartet (Ferencvaros - MTK - Ujpest - Honved) had some of the fiercest rivalries in club soccer ... now two of them are bankrupt... other two sometimes qualify in Europa Cup. Once the fierce Germany-Hungary rivalry was the top tie in world soccer, equivalent to IND-PAK rivalry in cricket - these days if in a decade there is a friendly .... Germany sends their U23 squad and still wins by 2-3 goals margin..... it's like India winning both Asia Cup games with bonus points resting Kohli & Bumrah. It's heading to a state that they might rest Sharma, Pandeya, KL and Dhawan as well ... and still bang PAK inside 35 overs by 9-10 wickets.

PCT better be aware of their past and their self respect, otherwise the future is not bright - these Misbah bashing also has an elasticity; few months later posters will loose interest even in that.

No international careers end for Pakistan after bad series.

Some players get discarded, then make a come back after a couple of series against a harmless opponent, even if youngsters replacing them have done well by then.
