Looks a decent cricketer at best, a poor mans lance klusener.

Sadly our players make such guys look like world beaters.

If that's the case then most of waqar's and gul's and ajmal's wickets would mean nothing. He's definitely not a gifted cricketer but gives 10x times the effort these Pak fans ever dream of their bowlers.
 
No trick here. He actually does comes across one if u observe him in testing conditions.
 
I have said this many times here in PP, this Perera guy is very useful player to have in for any team. His bowling record against us in the LOIs is just getting better and better as he plays more games against us.

He is a strong candidate(#NoPunIntended) for MOS award
 
I think I like Perera now, good thread Freelance, you must really be enjoying his mediocre bowling now :P

Perera reminds me of players like Jacob Oram & Abdul Razzaq in that he is a gentle paced bowler who does not look very threatening but is deceptive and cuts the ball around well. Also he is a big hitter

A lot of people here underestimate this guy, IMO he is one of the finest LOI all rounders going around
 
Averages 22.5 with the ball in ODIs, SR is an impressive 25 as well. Time people start giving credit where it's due. Has better stats than Malinga.

He is a seasonal bowler at best. SL has produced bowlers like him quite a bit. Sanjeeva Desilva, Zoyasa, Kulasekra comes to mind.
 
Perera is currently very comparable to Russell of windies. Both imo have potential to be world class odi allrounders.

He has played 32 innings as a batsman. Out of these, 9 have been scores over 20. All of these 20+ scores have been at a strike rate of over 138, some being over 200.

If that's not explosive I don't know what is. We're talking about someone who comes in at number 7/8.
 
Thisara Perera's reply to the selectors

Earlier this week, Sri Lankan all-rounder Thisara Perera picked up yet another Man-of-the-Match award for his swashbuckling 65 and three wicket haul that helped the hosts to win the second ODI against Pakistan by 77 runs and square the three match series. It was Perera's eighth Man-of-the-Match award, which is quite a few when you consider that he has played only 78 ODIs. Other Sri Lankan stalwarts like Angelo Mathews (6) and Lasith Malinga (7) have fewer such awards than Thisara although they have played more than double the games.

Thisara's performance was a slap on the face of the Sri Lankan selectors, who for some strange reason continue to undermine the value of one of the most talented young players in the country. Since last year, Perera had been cold shouldered by the selection panel headed by former captain Sanath Jayasuriya. He was dropped for the tour of West Indies last year, but returned with a massive impact in the home series against South Africa.

This year however things changed rapidly. During the tour of England, Sri Lanka left out Perera after the first ODI at The Oval and he wasn't picked for any of the home ODIs against South Africa despite intense criticism. The indication was that Perera was now solely considered for Twenty20 Internationals. In turn, Perera sought permission from the board to play the Caribbean Premier League, which too was denied and the allrounder was told to make himself available to go to England to represent Sri Lanka 'A'.

That Perera refused and a letter to the selectors stating that he was receiving treatment to a stress related illness sent shockwaves in cricket circles in Sri Lanka. There was a public outcry as Perera, at 25, is one of the most talented players in the country. Shortsighted selection policies have adversely affected the immensely talented cricketer.

In order to shield themselves from criticism, the selectors have put the ball back on the captain's court saying that it was Angelo Mathews who preferred other options than Thisara Perera. That looked a strange call given the fact there aren't many other all-rounders competing with Perera in Sri Lankan circles. But later it emerged that Mathews had been given a tough choice. The selectors had been comparing chalk with cheese. The option the selectors had given Mathews wasn't for the role of the all-rounder, but for the additional seamer effectively making Perera to compete with Nuwan Kulasekara.

Even when Perera made his return to the side in the series against Pakistan, he batted at number eight instead of seven. The number seven slot was occupied by Ashan Priyanjan. But after his onslaught on the hapless Pakistan bowlers, it will be now difficult to ignore Perera. He walked in with the score on 194 for six with 12 overs left and with skipper Angelo Mathews changed the course of the game with his brutal power hitting. Sri Lanka went onto post 310 at the end. Perera slammed 65 in 36 balls with five fours and four towering sixes. Sri Lanka scored 75 runs off the last five overs and Perera cleared the ropes on four occasions in that slot.

In recent times not many Sri Lankan batsmen have been able to clear the boundary as easily as Perera has done. He should have been given all the support and the confidence needed, but instead the establishment has failed to see to his development. There's been lack of imagination in using Perera's talent. When chasing big scores, Perera's big hitting powers could have been used to the benefit of the team, but it seems that he is reserved for lower order big hitting at the moment.

With the World Cup around, Thisara Perera should have been a key player as Sri Lankans gear up for the challenge, but he struggles to retain his place in the side. It is said that when he is dropped from the playing eleven, Perera reacts negatively in the dressing room and that attitude hasn't gone down too well with the cricket's hierarchy. However, the way to deal with it is not by showing a lukewarm response to one of the most talented young players in the country.

His reaction maybe due to the way he has been treated. For example, when it comes to providing No Objection Certificates (NOC) for participation of foreign T20 tournaments, the cricket establishment seems to be following double standards. It appears that most senior players get NOCs without much fuss, but Perera has gone though some hassles in recent times.

The talent of Thisara Perera has been mismanaged. There's lot more he could offer to the national team. Skipper Angelo Mathews needs to share part of the blame along with the selectors for he has not fought the case of Perera forcefully. The player could make a huge difference to Angelo Mathews' campaign in Australia and New Zealand next year.

Seems more like an exuse to get back at the sri lankan cricket board for not letting him play cpl.
 
T.Perera is a gifted player. Talented ? maybe, Skilled ? NO

T.Perera shouldn't be on the SL, unless he can perform like this on regular bases. DON'T BE FOOLED by his Bowling Stats.

T.Perera as a Batsmen

- Bullies weaker, slow medium pacers on flat pitches vs Bang, Zimb, India and mediocre bowlers in bad form.
- Cannot do ANYTHING vs bowlers bowling over 138 km/h. Looks totally retarded vs the likes of Steyn, Morkel, Johnson, Anderson
- Bullies spinners that do not turn much and spinners that do not bowl over 90 km/h

Perera as a bowler

- Picks up tail-enders, players in bad form and players batting carelessly, Why ? Because his ball comes a bit faster than his action suggests
- No way he will pick up wickets likes of Clarke, Bell, Kohli, Dhoni, Misbah, AB

I rather have a genuine batsmen or a genuine bowler than Thisara Perera. I'd keep him in every T20 matches as a BATSMEN. Loved the way how Malinga picked him for the T20 WC FINAL and didn't give a single over to T.Perera. Good job Malinga. If he has bowled, we would have seen Kohli hit a century of 35 balls.

which is really more than what any of our so called young batsmen have achieved against any team.
i'd almost play him as a batsman. at least the one time he comes off every 20 games, he'll win you the game.

He gives so much runs, throws away so many wickets with batting to provide a winning game very 20 runs. I'd rather have Prasad as a bowler....and he could also bat a bit. T.Perera can immigrate if he wants to. Know one cares, he is an international athlete he can't be emotionally weak.
 
Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera retires from Test cricket

All-rounder Thisara Perera has retired from Test cricket after been constantly overlooked for the longer version but will continue to play limited over cricket.

He had informed his employer, Sri Lanka Cricket in this regard in December, 2015.

“I’ve retired from Test since December 2015,” Perera said. “I have been waiting for an opportunity for the last four years to don the white jersey for my country again, but I have been ignored constantly. So I thought it is best that I give up the longer version and concentrate on limited over cricket,” the 26-year-old cricketer said.

Perera who made his Test debut against England in 2011, played his last Test match four years ago in 2012 against Pakistan in Pallekele. In his last match he scored 75 runs and picked up four wickets.

“On the other hand I am also nursing with a knee injury for a while and I do not think I can commit myself to bowl longer spells. So I thought this is the best time to give it up officially,” he added

Perera said his retirement from Test cricket would give hope to other cricketers waiting in the queue. (CF)

All-rounder Thisara Perera has irked the hierarchy of Sri Lankan cricket after sending CEO Ashley de Silva a letter informing his desire to retire from Test cricket. Perera despite immense potential to become a leading all-rounder in the world has blown hot and cold and has been in and out of the side in the last 24 months.

Perera struggled to finish his quota of four overs in T-20 cricket during the recent New Zealand series and many questions were raised about his attitude.

"Leave alone Test cricket, he will struggle to find a place in T-20 squad given his current form," a former Sri Lanka captain told The Island. "I don’t think he has done enough to earn the all-rounder’s sport in shorter formats of the game. Farveez Maharoof will be my choice for all-rounder," he added.

"He has been a huge disappointment in recent months. No one doubts his talents, but there are big question marks about his commitment," another key figure at SLC said.

In an international career that has spanned for six years, Perera has featured in only six Tests, the last of which came in 2012.

Lasith Malinga set the precedence for fast bowlers quitting Test cricket early when he retired from the longer format of the game in 2011 at the age of 27. Thisara Perera is 26.

Unless cricket authorities address the issue of players retiring from Test cricket early to be involved in various flourishing T-20 franchises around the world, the game could suffer many setbacks.

A very very big lose for Test cricket. The die hard fans of Test cricket will surely miss Perera whenever they see Lanka playing Test cricket. He was the greatest Test cricketer of this era.

Deeply shocked and saddened by the news. His sudden and unexpected exit at the very prime of his cricketing career has left a void that might take a few generations to fill.
 
Sir Perera achieved more in his short Test career than Bradman+Sobers+Imran+Sachin combined. Really shocked by the news of his early retirement. A great career comes to an end!

The only noticeable thing he has achieved in international cricket is hammering Pakistan with both bat & ball in all formats and a great innings against SA once.
 
In all seriousness,this is indeed a dark day for Sri Lankan cricket.Shows that more and more cricketers prefer the shorter formats.Malinga was the first,Perera will hardly be the last.

Malinga has an injury issue, he wasn't gonna play Test ever. He wouldn't have lasted if he had continued to play Test. Perera on the other hand wasn't a batsman or a bowler. Only his ECON was 10+ in the last 2 years and he is a hack. Like the unknown "former captain" aka Sanath Jayasuriya said he won't even play in the SL T20 line up. SL is better of getting a full batsman or a full bowler instead of him. Beside there is a new younger hack in town with more sixes than fours in T20 matches, he can bowl too, he can't do worse than an overweight 25 year old.

I mean from my memory it seems that this guy has almost been playing forever.

That could be because of repetition of names in Lankan cricket. Even i get confused which Mahela, Thisara, Mendis, Perera is being talked about. :)))

Debut back in 2009 so it surprise many not only you lol!

Herath is another surprise for many his debut was back in 1999!
 
He can lighten up some T20 leagues so what's the need for him to waste his life in Test cricket and then play those T20 leagues with a broken body.

I lost a bet once trying to remember Vaas's or Murali's full name. Couldn't do it, just couldn't do it.

Yea sometime we do feel like this for some players. I always felt Tharanga played very less for lanka but than i went to his profile and noticed he played 180 ODIs for lanka :D
 
a mediocre player, not sad or anything...was never built for test cricket....test cricket welcomes your decision with open arms.
 
He's playing hard to get, 5 years from now ya'll will bare witness the 2nd coming of the Perera one. And Test Cricket will never, nevaar... ever, evaaar; be the same again.

He is not doing a favor by waiting for the spot not sure where such attitudes get players to.

Never good when a young player retires. He might not have been performing at a high standard but the depth of an already weak Lankan Cricket structure will suffer even further.
