There is one thing that Pakistan cricket fans need to understand, and the earlier they do, the better: PSL is NOT the beacon of your hopes. PSL is tournament consisting of private clubs owned by private individuals. They do what they want. It is their choice who they want to appoint captain or include in the team. They could appoint Zulfiqar Babar or Saeed Ajmal as captain and nobody would still be at any right to criticize them simply because unlike PCB, they run their franchise with their OWN wealth not taxpayer money.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, PSL does not owe you anything. The PSL, or any PSL teams are not responsible to give you any talent. If you get some good cricketers out of PSL, then that's your luck, be happy. Take what you get but if they choose to play retired players, tried and tested failures or even players from Uganda, nobody is at right to comment - which is why I think we should stop pinning all our hopes onto PSL because PSL is not responsible for them. Our domestic competitions like the Quad-E-Azam trophy or the Pakistan cup are responsible for those. While the PSL is still under PCB as it organizes everything, the teams are not.
Take IPL for example. IPL has produced gems for cricketing nations around the world. Morris struggled to find a spot in the South Africa A team but a good IPL has turned him into a regular for the national team. Does this mean that South African fans start pinning their hopes onto the IPL and criticize private franchise owners for not doing something that would be better for the cause of South African cricket? No. They take what they get. What if BPL selects Sadaf Hussain next year and he has a great tournament, will we start expecting them to produce players for us every year? Just because PSL has 'Pakistan' in its name doesn't mean it owes us anything.
Frankly, team owners will get players who sell, instead of players who have ability but aren't famous. Wake up, we're in 2017. Cricket is more than just a sport. It's a business. Teams will still try to rope in Shahid Afridi even when he's 44 for how big a name he is, not just in Pakistan but around the world. That's the reality. If PSL wants to groom captains, do it in the domestic competitions. If the PCB wants to develop players, make better training facilities. Stop pinning your hopes on PSL.
