Apart from PV Sindhu, India have not had the best of starts to a blockbuster Sunday (July 25). After Manu Bhaker and Yashaswini Desai's exit in shooting, Sania Mirza-Ankita Raina fell flat despite dominating proceedings at the start in their face-off versus Nadiia Kichenok and Liudmyla to bow out of the women's doubles event.

All eyes are on India's rowing men's team before Mary Kom and India's men's hockey team take centre stage.

Tunisian swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui took a shock gold medal in the men's 400m freestyle on Sunday.

The 18-year-old won from the outside lane after qualifying slowest, but finished with stunning pace to beat Australia's Jack McLoughlin with a time of three minutes 43.36 seconds.

"I just can't believe it. It's a dream and it became true. It was great, it was my best race ever," said Hafnaoui.

It was Tunisia's fifth ever gold - and third in swimming.

US swimmer Kieran Smith took bronze at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

Hafnaoui, son of former Tunisian national basketball player Mohamed Hafnaoui, competed in the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, finishing eighth in the 400m and seventh in the 800m.

In 2019, he told Tunisian outlet La Presse he was aiming to win his first gold medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Hafnaoui will have a second shot at gold as he competes in the 800m freestyle, with heats starting on Tuesday.

Ohashi said she has been enjoying the Olympic experience, especially "spending time in the Olympic village with all the athletes and volunteers"

Hosts Japan also celebrated a surprise gold in the women's 400m individual medley, as Yui Ohashi pipped two Americans to the top step of the podium.

"It doesn't feel real. It is like a dream for me," said the 25-year-old.

"I couldn't go to the Rio Olympics, so for the past five years this became a big dream for me. This accomplishment is amazing."

I wonder when Pakistan will win a shock medal. Hopefully it’s during our lifetime

Judoka Chelsie Giles claimed Great Britain's first medal of the Tokyo Olympics with bronze in the women's -52kg event.

The 24-year-old from Coventry beat Switzerland's Fabienne Kocher.

34' - GOAL!!! Dilpreet Singh scores the sole field goal for India

Singapore was eliminated from the equestrian dressage qualifiers on Sunday after a judge found Caroline Chew's horse Tribiani was bleeding from the mouth while competing, spelling an abrupt end to the country's first foray into the sport at the Olympics. "It was a bit of a freak accident...He was feeling really good actually, presenting really well and then just caught his lip in the corner, I think. I didn't feel it happen, but obviously the judge saw it," Chew told reporters.

Olympic football: France win after Gignac hat-trick and Brazil held at Tokyo 2020

Andre-Pierre Gignac scored a second-half hat-trick as France came from behind three times to beat South Africa 4-3 and keep their Olympic hopes alive.

Having lost their Group A opener, France looked to be heading out until former Marseille striker Gignac completed his treble from the penalty spot to level for a third time on 85 minutes, before Teji Savanier grabbed an injury-time winner.

Gignac, who currently plays for Tigres in Mexico, is now top scorer in Tokyo with four goals from two matches.

South Africa, whose hopes of qualifying have now been ended, led three times through second-half goals from Kobamelo Kodisang, Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena.

Group leaders Mexico face second-placed hosts Japan later on Sunday, with the top two progressing into the knockout rounds.

Brazil held & Argentina have fresh hope
Defending champions Brazil were held to a goalless draw by Ivory Coast in Group D, after Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz was sent off for a trip on former Leeds winger Max Gradel on just 13 minutes.

Luiz was initially booked but the yellow card was upgraded to red by VAR, after he was deemed as denying a goal-scoring opportunity.

Ivory Coast, who won their Olympic opener against Saudi Arabia, also had a player dismissed late on as Eboue Kouassi saw red for a second yellow card.

Brazil, captained by former Barcelona defender Dani Alves, still top the group after thrashing Germany in their opening match.

Elsewhere, Facundo Medina gave Argentina their first win of the Olympics with a 1-0 win over Egypt, while Burnley striker Chris Wood was on target in New Zealand's 3-2 loss to Honduras.

Today a Pakistani weight lifter Talha Talib is competing in 67kg category.

In the first round (Snatch), he was on second position.

Looks like Talib is in Bronze medal position as things stand.

The Colombian and Chinese lifters have gone ahead of Talib, so at the moment it looks like he could at best get a bronze medal.

The fact that a Pakistani athlete could get a historic medal at the Olympics after a long time and yet there are so few posts tells why our countries are so far behind in the Olympics despite having huge populations.

I dont think hel win a medal but a top 5 finish is a very high possibility...This shows the talent there is in our country that an individual who got in on invitation and did not qualify came close to a medal. Give these guys some time and training and theyl be world beaters in no time....Talha trains at his home and he just did the second best snatch in olympics..says a lot

They usually go into oblivion bc of lack of support. I wont be surprised if he doesn't make to next Olympics.

Is there a chance this Talha guy can win bronze???

Asian giants of hockey struggling these days.

True...but ive been following this guy since the last 5 years and he is a real talent. Had the best junior record but coudnt participate in the world championships due to funding issue...There are a few youngeters in Pakistan who can easily win medals in paris 24 if they are looked at..but again as you said there will probably be no support unfortunately.

It's all bc of putting all eggs in one basket. KPL, LPL, NPL etc. In result, all other sports get neglected.

Looks like 5th place for Talib.

A decent effort from him.

top 5 finish, hope he gets the media hype.

That was marvelous by him needs to be given credit

Missed the snatch olympic record by 1kg and the world record by 5kg...amazing performance given everything

Sorry but no prizes for the 5th finish. No need to hype him up, provide him with funds but no point in making him a superstar. No one would remember even next week that he ended at 5th.

Talha Talib was second in Snatch.

didn't lift much in Clean & Jerk.

Got 5th Position.

Oh God, It was a great chance of getting at least bronze.

? Why not?

Olympics is not about winning medals only. Its about getting to participate at the world stage and show your skills.

Your view points shows the mentality that exists in pakistan, of we didnt win any medal bash them.

Olympic participation is itself a big achievement, whether its through qualification or wild card entry.

Its a great honor to even see these 10 atheletes play and a very huge honour that one of ours came at top 5 amongest all the competitors in 67kg weight lifting.

Needs to be hyped and honored in pakistan. But problem is we have a mentality that oh, if no medal than no honor.

Sporting countries like Canada know how to honor and treat their athletes, Pakistani awaam is naive in this regard.

And that is exactly the reason why our superstars are not achieving anything. The guy came close to a medal competing with the best in the world with no professional training, no coach to accompany him and literally no investment done on him. Yet we should not hype him up because he did not win a medal? This nation especially this forum would be going crazy if Babar Azam scores a hundred against Westindies in a day or two in a bilateral but yeah lets not celebrate a guy who almost won us an olympic medal after 29 years! Amazing

Pakistan is not a sporting nation, thus the people here dont understand how to appreciate sporting acheivements or olympic recognition.

Yesterday, some idiot journalist was bashing a female badminton player after she lost her match.

She came out and replied that it was the only time you even tweeted about me and that too was negatvie.

Ok what Canada do with athletes which finish at no 5? Olympics is all about medals, otherwise richer countries would not be "buying" athletes from poorer countries.

The guy is only 21 years old. Should be invested in.

I don't know what is the peak age in weight lifting. Will he be able to compete in the next Olympics but one thing is sure, he has the potential to get some medals for Pakistan, if not in Olympics at least in Asian games or Commonwealth games.

That journalist is an idiot and notorious for his stupid takes. Women in Pakistan already suffer enough so for them to make to Olympics is itself an achievement and If I am not wrong, in previous Olympics, Pakistan used to get swimmers and other athletes from UK, US etc basically the people with Pakistani ancestry.

He has already won a medal at CWG or Asian games. Pakistan usually snatch away a few medals at CWG and Asian Games so that's not a problem.

no its about winning medals. Its about world recognition for your athletes who don't get recognition.

If it was about winniing medals only, than only 10 competitiors are enough for a single event. Rest wouldn't be considered.

In Canada, there is a thing called Olympic Spirit that goes around. Every Canadian Athletes is supported and rooted for no matter what the sport is.

Coming 5th is a big achievement

Proud of the lad! Very fine margins and he performed incredibly on such a huge stage, well done. Hopefully he is actually given the resources and backing he needs to continue getting better!

Honestly I feel bad for the athletes here..I follow sports a lot and believe me when i say we have so much talent here that if we put only 10% of the resources that other countries put on their athletes we can easily win numerous medals and world championships regularly. I can name 10 athletes right now who would be sure shot medal hopefuls at Paris 24 if they were given the time that they need. As for the badminton player that is Mahoor shehzad and she lost to the world number 5 Japanese player. Our people and media dont know **** about sports and so make these stupid comments and articles on sports athletes that leads to no interest.

I read an article about Gulfam Joseph who finished 9th yesterday in Shooting that stated that our journey in the olympics was off to a pathetic start..You have a guy who finished above some of the best in the world on his second international event and you call it pathetic? Says a lot

Unreal how the Chinese guy had a relatively underwhelming snatch round but left everyone in his dust in the clean and jerk round. 187kg. The Chinese become a different breed when it comes to the Olympics.

Every Olympic athlete is an inspiration. When we had a Pakistani athele make his debut in the Vancover winter olympics, that inspired more atheletes from pakistan to take part in winter olympic events.

If Talha Talib is give the right media hype, it could inspire many, and what he has done was marvelous today.

Wait..He didn't qualify but came in on an invitation? Is this possible in the olympics?

I thought you had to qualify for every event.

Yup didnt qualify due to not participating in enough events due to funding issue...Every event in the olympics has 1-2 places for tripartite which is an invitation for countries that have otherwise very few competitors...The swimmers and athletics folks we send every time are on this quota including this time.

nope. there are some wild card and invitation enteries. THese enteries are given to those atheletes who have demonstrated some improvement in their performance but still not able to qualify due to funds etc.

I guess Sindhu, Mary Kom and Manika Batra are our best hopes for a medal. Again, mostly women athletes along with Mirabai.

Crazy how Indian women athletes punch way above their weight in the commonwealth games and olympics for us.

So he missed the Olympic medal by 2 KGs! Hope he wins it in next Olympics.

This was 6 days ago.

“Although I lifted 167kg in clean and jerk in Asian Championship, in practice now I lift 175kg and InshaAllah I will try to lift a couple of kilograms more in the Olympics. I will also try to pull off the best snatch performance which will help reach a good total in the end,” Talha said.

https://www.thenews.com.pk/print/866476-talha-eyeing-a-spot-in-top-three-at-tokyo-olympics

He lifted 170kg in clean and jerk on his last attempt today. But did pulled of his best in snatch.

come on do a dope test of the top two, we might still have a chance to get a medal..

Great Britain's Alex Yee won silver in a punishing men's triathlon at the Tokyo Olympics as Kristian Blummenfelt of Norway claimed gold.

Yee, making his Games debut, led for much of the 10km run before Blummenfelt produced a stunning breakaway in 27C heat and high humidity.

New Zealand's Hayden Wilde took bronze, with Briton Jonny Brownlee fifth.

Nagal with a lot of unforced errors is now trailing 1-4 in the second set after losing the first 2-6. Looks like he won't be able to get past the Russian.

The 26-year-old was greeted with chants of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' and felicitated by officials of the Sports Authority of India among others.

The diminutive Manipuri lifted a total of 202kg (87kg 115kg) in the 49kg category to better Karnam Malleswari's bronze in the 2000 Sydney Olympics on Saturday.

With that performance, she exorcised the ghosts of the 2016 Games where she had failed to log a single legitimate lift, leaving her shattered.

Chanu has also been a former world champion and a Commonwealth Games gold-medallist.

She was training in the USA before the Games and lived upto the medal expectations from her with a confident performance.

Tokyo Olympics: Naomi Osaka & Garbine Muguruza reach third round

Japan's Naomi Osaka cruised into the third round of the Tokyo Olympics women's singles with a 65-minute victory over Viktorija Golubic.

Second seed Osaka, the favourite for the gold medal following Ashleigh Barty's first-round exit, beat the Swiss 6-3 6-2.

She will face Marketa Vondrousova, who beat Mihaela Buzarnescu 6-1 6-2, for a quarter-final spot.

World number one Novak Djokovic beat Bolivia's Hugo Dellien 6-2 6-2.

Serb Djokovic needed only 61 minutes to set up a second-round meeting with Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff.

Great Britain's Jamie Murray and Neal Skupski were knocked out of the men's doubles in the second round, losing 6-3 6-4 to Japan's Kei Nishikori and Ben McLachlan.

Osaka took an eight-week break before the Games in order to protect her mental health.

She described making her comeback in the Olympics as being an "interesting" experience.

"The flag is next to my name no matter what tournament I play, but I feel like the scale of this is much bigger," she told American TV.

"It's something I've been waiting for for eight years."

There were also speedy victories for Garbine Muguruza and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Spain's two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza saw off China's Wang Qiang 6-3 6-0 in 61 minutes.

French Open runner-up Pavlyuchenkova, representing the Russian Olympic Committee, took only 54 minutes to beat Germany's Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-1 6-1.

Germany's Alexander Zverev advanced in the men's singles, beating Colombia's Daniel Elahi Galan 6-2 6-2.

3rd Quarter: Germany 2-0 India
Second goal! Anna Schroder now drives an unstoppable shot past Savita into the Indian goal. What fine margins! India were set to equalize after getting the Penalty stroke. Gurjit missed, and a few seconds later, Germany make their chance count and now they are 2-0 up.

The number of Covid-19 cases linked to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games has risen to 153, up 16 from the previous day, according to Games organizers.

One of the new cases reported was a resident of the Olympic Village, bringing the total number of infections from the village to 16.

Three of the new cases were identified as athletes but were not residents of the village. The remaining cases are identified as contractors, media, or Games-concerned personnel.

Tokyo 2020 is not revealing the names or nationalities of the Covid-19 cases.

How embarrassing!

Dutch cyclist Annemiek van Vleuten threw her arms up in the air, her face a picture of ecstasy and joy.

That's what you do when you think you've won Olympic gold — except she hadn't.

That honor went to Austria's Anna Kiesenhofer, who capitalized on her rival's confusion in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic women's road race on Sunday to secure a shock win.

The 31-year-old is a mother of three, a Syrian civil war refugee, and now she's officially an Olympian too.

Aldass made her debut in the spiritual home of judo , the Nippon Budokan, at Tokyo 2020 on Monday (26 July) to complete an epic journey since fleeing Syria for the Netherlands six years ago.

Her maiden Olympic bout came against Serbian judoka Marica Perisic who's 10 years her junior and already an accomplished fighter.

A European junior champion and two-time senior Grand Slam bronze-medallist, the 21-year-old has a big future and showed why against the IOC Refugee Olympic Team athlete.

Despite a valiant effort from Aldass, Peresic put her on the deck with 1:31 on the clock with a seoi-nage throw which she converted into a yoko-shiho-gatame hold for 10 seconds and victory by ippon.

Aldass' Olympic debut had come to an end, but merely stepping onto the mat to represent millions of refugees around the world was a triumph in itself.

Japanese superstar Naomi Osaka suffered a surprise exit in her home Olympics as Czech Marketa Vondrousova earned a straight-set win in Tokyo.

Osaka, 23, has been one of the faces of the Games in the Japanese capital and had the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron in last week's opening ceremony.

But the four-time Grand Slam champion could not back that up by winning a medal, losing 6-1 6-4 to the world number 42 in the third round.

It was Osaka's first tournament after withdrawing from the French Open in June, when she revealed she had "suffered long bouts of depression" since winning her first Grand Slam title in 2018.

Following impressive wins in the first two rounds, Osaka looked to be shaping up nicely for a gold-medal bid but produced 32 unforced errors in a rusty performance against former French Open finalist Vondrousova.

The 22-year-old Czech hit 18 winners against 10 unforced errors as she converted five of her 11 break points in the match.
