Paris Olympics (2024) - Discussion Thread

In Final, but a good game here. 17 points behind at one stage.

Congrats to all Pakistanis, what a brutal performance that was from Arshad Nadeem.

A Silver is still a good effort for Neeraj Chuwa well done guys

Many Commonwealth games Records barely make it to Olympic qualifying level bhai.
Arshad and Neeraj are world class in Javelin thats a rare occurrence.

The Hussain bloke rubbed somebody the wrong way I think and missed out on national selection which was odd when there’s barely any competition in Pakistan so thought somebody would know more about him from Pakistan, he had a decent medal tally wherever he competed and chances of qualifying are naturally better with that form, Commonwealth is still a notable competition and good showcase of the talent

Yeah is that why they allowed the insects to host it, not every question is answered by quick google searches unless you’re a sufferer of autism.

Neeraj should only compete in the Commonwealth henceforth.

I guess I respect and appreciate Arshad Nadeem more than someone.
Yapping about commonwealth games (which are almost getting cancelled with no host) , when the man actually already had a silver at a freaking World Championship. :facepalm

No wonder South Asia is at crap bottom in Olympics!! 4 years of Hibernation cycle at full display!
I know you will go back to your 4 year nap in a few weeks! :hamster:

McLaughlin-Levrone wins hurdles gold in world record

American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone smashed her own world record as she stormed to a sensational Olympic 400m hurdles gold in Paris.

The anticipated title showdown with Dutch star Femke Bol never seriously materialised as McLaughlin-Levrone left her rivals far behind to defend the title in 50.37 seconds.

Bol, the second-fastest woman of all-time in the event, faded to finish third in 52.15, behind US silver medallist Anna Cockrell, who ran a personal best 51.87.

McLaughlin-Levrone improved her world record to 50.65 in June, but she saved her best for the sport's biggest stage to claim her sixth global title.

Together, McLaughlin-Levrone and Bol have run 17 of the 20 fastest times in history.

Heartiest Congratulations to all the Pakistani awaam on the historic and stunning Olympic World Record victory of the ‘ideal Pakistani’ & soon to be role model of a nation, the one and only, the generational talent , The Arshad Nadeem.

Nobody deserved it more than this gentle giant of a man.

When I first saw him at the Tokyo Olympics, my immediate thought was that how in the hell did Neeraj Chopra outperform this absolute giant of a specimen. He had OR/WR/GOAT written all over him and it proved yesterday that it was just a matter of a time. He put the pieces together , made incremental changes and reached his true potential.

He’s young still and sky is the limit for him hence I expect more world championships and another Olympic gold next time.

Until then, I wish the Pakistani awaam make the most of this, bring a sports revolution, a national revolution, it’s the moment to inspire the youth and bring them in the right track of continuous development.

Pakistan has huge potential in a lot of sports and that potential must now be allowed to reach its potential just like Arshad Nadeem’s.

The friendship that Arshad bhai formed with Neeraj Chopra will be remembered for ages. For all the bad blood between the two nations, let us never forget the culture and language that we share. We have one mother and we will always be blood brothers. I raise a toast to Arshad Nadeem’s triumph in hope it will bring massive positive changes in our relationships moving forward and in hope that it inspires Pakistan as a nation to chase excellence in every field.

With love,
Your Bhaijaan

US superstars reach Olympic final after 'special' fightback

A star-studded United States side showed their quality when it mattered as they fought back from a 13-point deficit in the final quarter to beat Serbia in a thrilling Olympic men's basketball semi-final.

The vast array of NBA superstars, led by LeBron James and Steph Curry, trailed 76-63 after three quarters.

But they turned up the heat and turned around the deficit to win 95-91 at a noisy Bercy Arena.

"To come back the way we did... I've seen a lot of team USA basketball and that was a special," said Curry, who finished with game-high 36 points.

The comeback maintained the Americans' bid for a fifth successive gold in an Olympic event which they have dominated since it was introduced in 1936.

On Saturday, they will play hosts France in the gold-medal match.

Serbia, led by Nikola Jokic, the NBA's reigning most valuable player (MVP), must settle for a crack at bronze when they face Germany earlier on the same day.

The Gen Z Dream Team prove their worth

Pretty much every US Olympic squad since the 1992 Games has been compared to the 'Dream Team' led by Michael Jordan and none have ever come close.

This Gen Z ensemble cast, featuring four NBA regular season MVP winners - James, Curry, Kevin Durant and Joel Embiid - 11 NBA All-Stars and seven NBA champions, is not far behind.

Coach Steve Kerr - himself one of the greatest bosses in NBA history - wondered how he would knit together five players from a 12-man squad where each could be a future Hall of Famer.

Against Serbia it took a while for the individuals to get going as a team with only Curry, finding space to land his trademark three-pointers, keeping them within touching distance.

Jokic looked on course to upstage his American opponents, playing a key role as Serbia, who led by as many as 17 points, stifled them in a dominant first half.

But, as the US powered back into the game, Serbia faltered.

Three-pointers from Durant and Embiid started to turn the tide in the last quarter before James bustled through to put them level at 84-84.

Curry landed another from behind the arc as the Americans led with two minutes and 24 seconds left - the first time they had been ahead since 45 seconds after the game started.

With an A-List crowd including Simone Biles, Snoop Dogg and Travis Scott cheering them on, they closed out a memorable victory and danced in celebration on the court.

Serbia were unhappy with some of the refereeing decisions in the clutch moments, making their feelings known by lambasting the officials as they walked off the floor.

France willing to 'spill blood' to win gold

Earlier, France were helped by a frenzied home crowd as they edged past Germany 73-69.

With jubilant fans celebrating inside the arena, and many more watching television screens outside Parisian bars, France moved into the gold-medal match for the second successive Games.

In Tokyo, Les Bleus had to settle for silver as they were unable to end the American stranglehold.

France face a tough task to stop them again, although they also have an NBA superstar themselves in 20-year-old Victor Wembanyama.

The spindly 7ft 4in centre, known as Wemby or the ‘Alien’ for his height and wingspan, lived up to the hype that preceded his first season at the San Antonio Spurs by winning rookie of the year.

His fine year has continued by being at the forefront of his nation’s Olympic run and he says the team will put their bodies on the line in order to beat the Americans.

"In our national anthem, we talk about blood, too. We're willing to spill blood on the court," said Wembanyama.

"So it's no big deal. If it allows us to win gold, I'm all for it."

Olympic closing ceremony revised ‘umpteen’ times after opening event furore

The executive director of the closing ceremony at the Olympic Games has admitted that he had to revise the script “for the umpteenth time” after a backlash against the opening event on the Seine.

Thierry Reboul reiterated his insistence that there had been no attempt to parody the Last Supper in the first spectacle but that it had referenced a 17th-century Dutch painting of the Greek Olympian gods.

He conceded, however, that the angry response to the ceremony, including death threats targeted at Reboul, the executive director of both ceremonies, and the artistic director Thomas Jolly, had made him more careful about potential misinterpretations of Sunday’s ceremony at the Stade de France.

Asked about death threats, Reboul said he tried not to talk about it, saying: “You have to live with it and file a complaint, show that you won’t let yourself be pushed around or intimidated”.

“But they forced us to have to reread the entire show for the umpteenth time to be sure that there is no possible misinterpretation, that we are not made to say what we do not want to say”, he said.

The Paris 2024 organising committee initially apologised to Catholics and other Christian groups over a scene in the opening event that depicted drag queens, a transgender model and a semi-naked singer sitting in a fruit bowl.

French bishops had regretted the “excesses and provocation” of the tableau, which they said amounted to “a mockery of Christianity” while Donald Trump described it as a “disgrace”.

It was only later that Jolly clarified the inspiration. “I think it was pretty clear. There’s Dionysus who arrives at the table … why is he there? Because he’s the god of feasting, of wine, and the father of Sequana, the goddess of the River Seine”, he said.

Rumours have swirled about who will perform at the closing ceremony following stunning performances by Celin e Dion and Lady Gaga two weeks ago. A stunt segment by Tom Cruise is expected while appearances by Taylor Swift, who has been on tour in Europe, or Beyoncé have been mooted.

Reboul admitted that the section in the closing ceremony given over to introducing the next Games in Los Angeles in 2028 had been extended beyond the normal time frame.

He said: “It’s usually a 12-minute sequence to launch future Games, this one will be a little longer. Los Angeles prepared it entirely, over there. But we’re co-producing it with them.”

Reboul, who has been overseeing rehearsals at the Stade de France between 1am and 5am, to avoid clashing with the athletic events at the national stadium, said he had been delighted by the “pride, love, passion” expressed from many quarters about the opening ceremony.

He said: “We can dare to say that we’re proud to be French. Many people admit that they had a very defeatist approach to these Games, lots of people thought that the whole world was going to make fun of us on the evening of the ceremony. And it’s an overflowing love.”

Speaking to Le Parisien, Reboul did not offer any clues as to the script of the closing show except to say that it would offer a “moment of tolerance, sharing and communion, without a bad pun”.

“But, here, we are in a stadium”, he said. “It is very much Thomas’s universe, which is a bit like a theatre … it will be magnificent. But what we did on the Seine, we can only do it once.

“If all goes well, we will have a blast. But I do not know of any edition of the Olympic Games where the closing ceremony changed the perception of the opening ceremony. It is this one that triggers the entire perception of the Games.”

Storms raged inside me during viral image - Dikec

Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec may have gone viral for his calm and casual demeanour at the Paris Olympics but what he was feeling inside was quite the opposite.

Dikec's nonchalant pose, with his non-shooting hand casually tucked into his pocket, sparked a flurry of memes on social media as he won silver alongside Sevval Ilayda Tarhan in the mixed team 10-metre air pistol event.

But the 51-year-old said: "At that moment, everyone says I seemed very calm, but actually, storms were raging inside me," said Dikec.

"I think my shooting pose represented the Olympic spirit very well: the fair play, simplicity, clarity and naturalness. That's why it got so much attention."

Dikec opted not to wear the high-tech gear of his shooting competitors, donning a simple yellow ear plug and regular glasses instead.

His pose has been emulated by fellow athletes, with Sweden's pole vault champion Armand Duplantis paying tribute after breaking his own world record at the Games.

Turkey midfielder Irfan Can Kahveci also appeared to copy the celebration during Fenerbahce's 2-1 Champions League qualifying defeat by Lille on Tuesday.

After securing his first Olympic medal, Dikec is aiming to go one better at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles and dethrone Serbian champions Zorana Arunovic and Damir Mikec.

"My partner and I will get the gold at the Los Angeles 2028 Games," said Dikec.

"I've only lent the gold medal until 2028."

Rhythmic Gymnastics-Russia's presence still felt despite exclusion

Before striding on to the Olympic rhythmic gymnastics platform to perform her hoop routine, Germany's Margarita Kolosov took a breath, squared her shoulders and flung a small towel to the floor.

Tossing a towel on the floor prior to a routine as if throwing down the gauntlet is a ritual made fashionable by Russian gymnasts and several other athletes performed it on Thursday at the individual all-around qualifiers.

It is just a small example of Russia's cultural influence on the sport and its gymnasts, some of whom, including Kolosov, speak Russian or have roots in that country. Coaches from Russia dotted the Porte de La Chapelle arena on Thursday during qualifiers.

Russia are not in Paris this year, however, because of sanctions put in place after the invasion of Ukraine.

Still, there is no doubt that Russia's imprint remains.

Russia and other former Soviet states have won 34 of the 48 medals up for grabs since the 1984 Los Angeles Games, which the Soviet Union boycotted.

Many of the most decorated rhythmic gymnasts are Russian, from two-time Olympic gold medallists Evgeniya Kanaeva to Alina Kabaeva, who has two Olympic medals, 14 World Championship medals and 21 European Championship medals.

Russia's success owes much to Irina Viner, 76, the team's head coach since 2001 and president of Russia's rhythmic gymnastics federation.

"There is no particular secret to the question why Russia has been so dominant," Rio gold medallist Margarita Mamun has previously said. "Irina Viner plays a big part in it. The bar is set so high now, and that is only growing every year."

Team GB's Katarina Johnson-Thompson will race for Olympic heptathlon gold in the 800m on Friday night after finishing the morning session in second place, 121 points behind Nafissatou Thiam

Belgium's Thiam tops the standings with 5,924 points, followed by Johnson-Thompson with 5,803 and Switzerland's Anna Kaelin on 5,694.

It means Johnson-Thompson, who has never won an Olympic medal, will have to run roughly eight seconds quicker than the defending champion to win.

The world champion began the day with a 48-point lead but knew it would be tough with Thiam's best event - the javelin - yet to come in Paris.

She registered 6.40m in the long jump, enough to keep her ahead of Thiam, who could only cut her lead by three points.

Johnson-Thompson then threw a season's best 45.49m in the javelin - comparatively one of her weaker events - but it was not enough to stop Thiam replacing her at the top of the standings.

Thiam's huge throw of 54.04m helped her take the lead from Johnson-Thompson and set up a thrilling finale.

The 800m takes place at 19:25 BST, with live coverage across BBC platforms.

Heptathlon standings with one event remaining

How close to gold is Johnson-Thompson?
It will be a tough, tough ask for Johnson-Thompson under the lights - she will, ultimately, need the race of her life to claim gold.

There are just 103 points between Johnson-Thompson and Thiam's personal bests in the 800m.

Johnson-Thompson's best time is two minutes 05.63 seconds, while Thiam's is 2:11.79.

That would earn Johnson-Thompson 1,064 points, and Thiam 961.

However, the Briton has given herself a chance, having produced some of her best performances over the past two days.

On Thursday, she registered a season's best performance in the 100m hurdles, logged her best mark for five years in the high jump and finished with a career-best throw in the shot put to top the standings.

But Thiam was always going to respond on Friday in the events she has historically been stronger in.

The Belgian is the two-time defending Olympic champion and has won multiple world and European golds.

Burgin through to 800m final but Pattison out

GB's Burgin reaches men's 800m final

Britain's Max Burgin qualified for Saturday's men's 800m final, but world bronze medallist Ben Pattison missed out.

Burgin was the third-fastest qualifier, running a personal best one minute 43.50 seconds, but compatriots Pattison and Elliot Giles both exited.

Cindy Sember failed to qualify for the women's 100m hurdles final after stumbling in her semi-finals.

Great Britain's quartet of Yemi Mary John, Hannah Kelly, Jodie Williams and Lina Nielsen qualified for the women's 4x400m final with a season's best three minutes 24.72 seconds.

They were second fastest in their heat, behind only the United States, with Ireland also advancing to Saturday's final.

The men's team also progressed, with Sam Reardon, Matthew Hudson-Smith, Toby Harries and Charles Dobson clocking two minutes 58.88 seconds.

Quincy Wilson made history for the US by helping the men's team qualify for the final, with the 16-year-old becoming the youngest American male to compete in an Olympic track and field event.

On Friday evening, GB's women and men will go for gold in the 4x100m relay finals at 18:30 and 18:47 respectively.

Ireland's Rhasidat Adeleke bids for a first Olympic medal in the women's 400m final, alongside Britain's Amber Anning.

Eilish McColgan and Megan Keith then line up for GB in the women's 10,000m final.

Olympian who went viral hospitalised after collapsing at press conference
South Korean Olympic pistol shooter Kim Ye-ji caused panic after collapsing at a news conference on Friday.

Kim, who became an overnight social media sensation for her cool manner whilst competing at the games, was speaking at an event in Imsil, South Korea when she collapsed.

Stress and exhaustion are believed to be the reason behind the star’s worrying turn.

A county official said Kim regained consciousness and was taken to hospital but did not require CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation).

The 31-year-old is expected to remain in hospital for observation until doctors are satisfied that she has fully recovered.

The official added that Kim was likely suffering tiredness after her exploits at the Paris Olympics.

Kim landed the silver medal in the 10-metre air pistol event and in doing so, became a favourite due to her attire and persona.

She was lauded for her style which saw her don a pair of futuristic glasses to improve her precision coupled with her cool, laid-back style which earned her the nickname ‘smiling assassin.’

Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and owner of social media platform X, also took a liking to Kim claiming she 'should be cast in an action movie. No acting required!'

The shooter thanked Musk for making her famous and replied: "I received a lot of unexpected attention and I believe it's thanks to Elon Musk rather than myself. So, thank you."

Kim went viral alongside Turkish shooter Yusuf Dikec, who also dream attention for his style in Paris, winning silver in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol.

The 51-year-old's hand-in-pocket, casual approach to the sport has seen him inspire celebrations of many famous athletes, including Swedish pole vault star Armand Duplantis.

Kim broke the world record in the 25m pistol women’s event in May and carried her form into her first Olympic games, putting on a fine showing to claim her first medal.

Egypt wrestler arrested in Paris for sexual assault

Egyptian Olympic wrestler Mohamed 'Kesho' Ibrahim has been arrested in Paris for an alleged sexual assault.

The Paris prosecutor's office released a statement saying: "On August 9 around 5am, a man born in March 1998 in Egypt who was a wrestler in the Olympic delegation was arrested in front of the Oz cafe."

It is understood he was arrested for allegedly touching the buttocks of another customer at the cafe.

The Egyptian Olympic Committee (EOC) named Kesho, who won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games, as the team member who had been arrested.

The EOC added he will be investigated by its ethics committee and could face a life ban from competition.

"If the allegations are substantiated, the wrestler will face permanent suspension and will be barred from participating in both domestic and international competitions," it said.

Kesho was beaten by Azerbaijan's Hasrat Jafarov in the first round of the men's 67kg Greco-Roman wrestling on Wednesday.

The EOC said he had been given permission to leave the Egyptian camp to watch the final of his weight category but failed to return and turned off his phone.

Spain continued their recent dominance of international football by edging past France but this time in under 23- who fought back from 3-1 down to force extra time - to win Olympic men's gold at Paris 2024

A pulsating match saw the hosts take an early lead, quickly fall 3-1 behind before half-time and then mount a stunning second-half comeback.

However, Thierry Henry's side could not see the job through as Spain substitute Sergio Camello kept calm in the most tense of situations to score twice in the extra period.

Both goals sparked jubilant celebrations among the Spanish, who mobbed Rayo Vallecano forward Camello as they won Olympic gold for the first time since 1992.

The thrilling triumph continued Spain's success, little over a month after they won the men's European Championship, beating England in the final.

They also won the men's under-19 European title last month, while the women's team lifted the World Cup last year.

In contrast, the mood of the hosts was one of deflation as Henry consoled his players.

Netherlands secure historic Olympic hockey double

The Netherlands overcame an almighty scare to retain their Olympic title in the women's hockey by beating China on penalties in the final.

The Dutch were the overwhelming favourites having thrashed China 3-0 in the group stages, but were nine minutes away from missing out on gold before Yibbi Jansen equalised with a drag flick.

The match finished 1-1, and the current world and European champions dominated the shootout with Dutch keeper Anne Veenendaal making three saves in a 3-1 win.

It means the Netherlands have now won four of the past five Olympic titles - the one exception being a silver medal in 2016 - and the Dutch became the first nation to win two hockey golds at the same Games after the men's team won their final on penalties on Thursday.

I don’t really watch women’s boxing much or had seen Imane in a full bout previously until the Gold Medal match just now, but I’m mighty impressed. For a female fighter she has a surprisingly very high ring IQ and isn’t a sore to watch, she’s very sound technically as well. Beautiful footwork there and use of lateral movement with that lead hand doing all the good work for her, Yang had no answer, was forced to over-reach and was countered repeatedly with clean right hands and when she was expecting that shot on the ropes, Imane got her not with the 1-2, but the 2-1; feint with the right and shoot a stiff jab with the left. Yang was tough but Imane won every round and deserves to be Olympic Champion.

Boxer’s are a special breed, only she could have the mental capabilities to withstand all she did, to keep her composure and deliver for her country.

Huge for Algeria!

And I think promoters will be lining up for Imane, not just because of the publicity but the style I reckon will translate well to the pro’s if she chooses to compete there.

Beach tennis is on now between Brazil and Canada, I wasn’t planning on watching this most fascinating sport, but here I am…..

Khelif wins gold amid gender eligibility row

Imane Khelif won Olympic women's boxing gold a year after being disqualified from the World Championships for reportedly failing a gender eligibility test.

The Algerian, amid a controversy that has overshadowed the boxing events in Paris, beat Chinese world champion Yang Liu by unanimous decision to win the welterweight division.

The 25-year-old was roared to the ring by swathes of Algerian support - who waved their green, white and red flags - and dominated the fight.

She was showboating at the bell, dancing while already knowing the victory was hers, before the pair shared a warm embrace.

"It is my dream. I am very happy," Khelif told the BBC. "It is fantastic. Amazing.

"Eight years of work, no sleep. I want to thank all of the people in Algeria.

"I am very happy for my performance. I am a strong woman."

When the result was confirmed, Yang raised her opponent's arm into the air - a sharp contrast to the scenes after Khelif's opening fight against Italy's Angela Carini - and Khelif was then carried around a jubilant arena on the shoulders of her coach.

Lin Yu-ting, the second boxer banned last year under the same ruling, will fight in her final on Saturday but Khelif's Games - one of the most extraordinary and controversial in recent memory - ended with her standing on top of the podium.

She was applauded by all three of her fellow medallists and there were tears in her eyes as the Algerian anthem was played.

Aman Sehrawat won the bronze in the men’s freestyle 57kg event at the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling tournament on Friday to become India’s youngest medal winner at the Summer Games.

At the age of 21 years and 24 days, Aman Sehrawat bettered PV Sindhu’s record of 21 years, one month and 14 days when she bagged the silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

On his Olympic debut, Aman Sehrawat, an Asian champion, got the better of Puerto Rico’s Darian Cruz, a Pan American Games bronze medallist, with a convincing 13-5 scoreline.

This was India’s first medal in wrestling at Paris 2024, sixth overall and the second successive one in the event at the Olympics. Ravi Kumar Dahiya had won silver in the event at Tokyo 2020.

India's Reetika Hooda loses quarterfinal in 76kg wrestling at Paris Olympics

Shedding 4.6 kg in 10 hours, Aman Sehrawat clears weigh-in, wins Olympic bronze

Ahead of his bronze medal play-off on Friday, Aman Sehrawat faced a daunting challenge after his semifinal defeat on Thursday, August 8. Weighing in at 61.5kg, 4.5 over the permissible limit for the men’s 57kg category, the Indian wrestler had just 10 hours to shed the excess weight. Alongside him were Indian coaches Jagmander Singh and Virender Dahiya, who took on the critical task of helping him lose the extra weight in time for the next weigh-in.

Being within the permissible limit in wrestling has now taken centre stage since the Vinesh Phogat fiasco. The Indian wrester was disqualified from the women’s 50kg final for being just 100g over the limit during the second-day weigh-in. The wrestler is now left at the mercy of the Court of Arbitration of Sport to decide on her plea and possibly award her a joint-silver medal. Jadmander and Dahiya, however, were clear with their mission when it came to Aman as they wanted to avoid another Vinesh situation.

The clock was ticking after Aman, only 21 years old, lost his semifinal bout to Japan’s Rei Higuchi around 6:30 pm. With no time to spare, Aman and his coaches embarked on an intense effort to meet the weight requirement, determined to prevent another heartbreaking disqualification.

Nigeria's first ever Olympic cyclist forced to BORROW a bike from the German team to compete in Paris after being unable to source one of her own'

Nigeria's first ever Olympic cyclist was forced to borrow a bike from the German team to compete in Paris after being unable to source one of her own.

Ese Ukpeseraye was initially only registered for the women's road race but competed in the keirin and the sprint - which require a different type of bike - at short notice.

The 25-year-old athlete revealed on social media that, in a touching gesture, the German cycling squad came to her rescue to ensure she could participate.

'Due to the short notice of me competing at the keirin & Sprint, #TeamNigeria, I had no bicycle to race with on the tracks,' Ukpeseraye wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

'In the spirit of sportsmanship the German team @bunddeutscherradfahr came to my rescue by offering me a bicycle. Thank you.'

Her post led to widespread condemnation of Team Nigeria's organisational failings but the country's sports minister has insisted the situation was unavoidable.

John Owan Enoh said the Union Cycliste Internationale had offered Nigeria slots in two women's track events at the last minute due to a disqualification.

The offer came after the Olympic team had already arrived in Paris, Enoh added.

'For this track race reallocated to Team Nigeria, a very special equipment (approved specifically for the Olympic track game) is used,' he said on X.

'It'll take months to have it delivered after ordering and making payment.'

Ukpeseraye's first event came in the women's road race but she, along with a number of other competitors, did not complete the 154km (96 mile) route.

'It was an honour to represent Nigeria at this level. Although I couldn't finish the race, being here is a victory in itself,' she said, via Nigerian media.

She also missed out on the finals of the two track events she was drafted in for, finishing sixth in her keirin heat and 28th in the sprint qualifiers.

Ukpeseraye is proud of her achievements, however, especially after completing an 11-second lap on her borrowed bike before bowing out.

'I was very happy because in the flying lap, I've never done an 11 [second lap] before. I always do 12, sometimes 13,' Ukpeseraye told Cycling News.

'I was even surprised that without preparing for it, I did 11. There are some people who have been preparing for this for the past three years, and they did 11 like me as well. So I was very, very happy, as if I'm the one that won.'

Trolling of viral Olympics breaker 'disappointing'

Australian Olympic great Anna Meares says the social media mocking of a breaker for her routine and choice of clothing is "really disappointing".

Rachael Gunn, 36, failed to win over the judges as she lost her three round-robin contests in the competitive form of breakdancing by an aggregate score of 54-0 on Friday.

The university lecturer - who competes under the name Raygun - wore a green and yellow Australian Olympic tracksuit, while her rivals were kitted out in streetwear as breaking made its debut as a Games event.

As well as criticising her attire, social media users mocked the Australian's routine as she bounced around on stage like a kangaroo and stood on her head at times.

Explaining her performance, Gunn said: "I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get in a lifetime to do that on an international stage?

"I was always the underdog and wanted to make my mark in a different way."

Meares, a two-time Olympic cycling gold medallist who is the Australia team's chef de mission in Paris, said of the criticism: "I think that what has occurred on social media with trolls and keyboard warriors, and taking those comments and giving them air time, has been really disappointing."

Speaking at a news conference on Saturday, Meares said: "I absolutely love her courage. I love her character, and I feel very disappointed for her that she has come under the attack that she has."

Responding to the backlash on social media, Gunn said: "Don't be afraid to be different, go out there and represent yourself, you never where that's gonna take you."

Meares says the criticism of Gunn was evidence of misogyny.

"In 2008, she was locked in a room crying being involved in a male-dominated sport as the only woman, and it took great courage for her to continue on and fight for her opportunity to participate in a sport that she loved," Meares said.

Gunn appeared to agree with Meares' sentiment, as she questioned whether male counterparts would be met with the same level of outrage for their clothing choices.

"Looking forward to the same level of scrutiny on what the b-boys wear tomorrow," Gunn said on Friday.

In breaking, female participants are known as 'b-girls', while males are referred to as 'b-boys'.

Breaking - a style of street dance that originated in 1970s New York - was announced in 2020 as part of the Olympic programme for Paris.

The event, which has been introduced to attract a younger audience to the Games, is not yet part of the programme for Los Angeles in 2028.
