Indian Olympic body refutes reports of ban on Antim Panghal, mulls punishment

The Indian Olympic Association has refuted claims that they're planning to ban Antim Panghal for the fiasco at the Paris Olympics as her sister was detained for entering the Olympics village. The IOA, however, is planning to punish the Indian wrestler for the issue. There were reports on Thursday, August 8, suggesting that Antim would be given a 3-year ban over what happened in Paris.

However, IOA quickly refuted these claims and asked the media to check with the leadership before posting such reports.

"IOA refutes reports that a ban has been imposed on wrestler Antim. It requests media persons to please check with the IOA leadership before posting such reports," read the statement.

What happened with Antim on August 7

Antim faced a significant setback after her sister, Nisha Panghal, was caught using her accreditation to enter the Paris Olympic Village, leading to the revocation of Antim's credentials by authorities. Nisha was briefly detained by Paris police for the violation, but was released with a warning following the intervention of the IOA. As a result of the incident, the IOA has instructed Antim, along with her coach, brother, and sister, to leave Paris.

August 7 was particularly challenging for Antim, as her Olympic debut at the Paris 2024 Games ended in disappointment with a first-round defeat in the women’s 53kg wrestling event at the Champ-de-Mars Arena.

Antim had gone to visit her personal coach and sparring partner, leaving her sister Nisha to retrieve her belongings from the Olympic Village using her accreditation, which led to the unfortunate mishap.

What Antim said about the episode

Antim would explain her side of the story and claomed that she wasn't taken to the police station and her sister was let go after verification. The wrestler also said that news of a scuffle between her coach and a taxi driver was blown out of proportion.

"When I lost the bout yesterday, my health deteriorated and I had fallen sick. My sister who was staying in Paris insisted me to stay with her and I had taken permission from the Indian authorities as well. I was granted permission as well. I arrived at the hotel and I needed my stuff badly, the things that were in the Olympic village. Because of my bad health, I had slept. My sister took my accreditation card and went to the Olympic village. She went there and told her sister’s health is not well and she needs her stuff so can I take her belongings from inside. They saw the accreditation card and took it away from her. They took her to police station for verification."

Well done boys! One more bronze from Hockey. I was really beginning to despair.

To be fair, I think a bronze was about our level and we did it. Which is more than can be said about the other sports we came fourth in.

Sreejesh and Harmanpreet are the heroes. The end was crazy! The Spanish gave up their goalkeeper and PCs galore.

Nervous last few minutes but India hold to win the second hockey bronze in a row.

Olympics: India win Bronze, back-to-back hockey medals for 1st time since 1972

India gave PR Sreejesh the perfect farewell as they defeated Spain 2-1 to claim the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics 2024. This was the first time India won back-to-back medals for the first time since 1972. Harmanpreet Singh scored a brace after India were behind in the contest to claim the win as they got their record-extending 13th hockey medal at the Olympics.

The first 5 minutes was a cagey affair for both sides as India made their first circle penetration, but to no avail. Sukhjeet got the first real chance of the match as Hardik made a fine run close to D before passing to his teammate. Sukhjeet's shot was well-wide.

The Indian attack started to pick up as the circle penetrations went up to 5 as half of the quarter was played. Jose Maria Basterra would make a sensational run into the Indian D in the 10th minute forcing Sreejesh into action to avert the danger.

There were a few mistakes from both sides in possession as the quarter ended with no penalty corner for both sides.

A good move from the Spanish attackers saw them get a penalty stroke and Marc Miralles make no mistake to take the lead in the 18th minute. Spain were certainly on the front foot as they started to use the wings effectively and got the first PC of the game. It was stopped by Amit Rohidas and Spain got another PC. It was deflected past the post by the Indian rusher.

India had a great chance in the box as Lalit's shot was saved by the Spanish goalkeeper Calzado. The Indian mistakes would almost cost them again as Spain almost doubled the lead as ball into the D almost found the back of the net.

They would continue to trouble the Indian defence as Borja Lacalle had hit the post. The resulting PC from the commotion led to an Indian counter-attack and they got their first PC of the game in the 29th minute. But the effort from Amit Rohidas was saved as India looked to start getting some momentum back.

They would get another PC as Manpreet put in a dangerous ball into the D in the final few seconds and Harmanpreet would level things up.

Spain started the third quarter with some pressure but India were able to get through it. India got a PC in the 33rd minute after a smart referral as Harmanpreet scored his second one to put India into the lead. Spain immediately got a PC back but the Indian defence was up to the mark.

India would get the second PC of the third quarter and it brought out a save from Calzado. A green card was given to Abhishek as he was a little too enthusiastic at the restart.

India would break the Spanish press in the 37th minute and got their third PC of the quarter. It was stopped by the Spanish rusher as India got another PC. Or so they thought as a referral would overturn it.

Spain would start to work hard once again and got a PC in the 40th minute and it was saved by Sreejesh. Spain thought they had a goal but the a good referee referral would preserve the lead for India.

Spain were looking to find the equaliser before the third quarter ended. India were able to get a ball to the right-hand side and a shot from Gurjant was saved.

But India got a PC from it and Harmanpreet was once again denied by Calzado. That was the last bit of action in Q3 as we headed into the final 15 minutes of the game.

Spain put on the pressure early in the final quarter and they got a PC just right after the restart. The effort from Recasens was well-wide of the target.

Sukhjeet had a great chance to make it 3-1 but his shot was well wide in the 46th minute. Spain continued to push India back and almost had a shot creep into the goal. Thankfully Sreejesh took no chances and took it away.

Sukhjeet got a green card with less than 8 minutes remaining as Spain looked to make the most of the man advantage. The Indian defence looked to remain solid as the pressure was certainly coming in from Spain.

The Spanish pressure would yield a penalty corner with less that 90 seconds left. They would get one more again and it was Sreejesh who made the save.

The drama would spill into the final minute as Spain would get a PC in the final minute. Sreejesh was able to clear the danger but Spain got another one. It wouldn't make a difference as India won the match to give Sreejesh an emotional farewell.

Please support hockey: Skipper Harmanpreet's plea after bronze win in Paris

India captain Harmanpreet asked for support for the Indian hockey team after clinching Bronze in the Paris Olympics. India beat Spain 2-1 in an absolute thriller on Thursday, 8 August. Harmanpreet, speaking to the broadcaster after the medal win said that the hockey team was trying to reinstate the sport to its former glory.

India had fallen to a heartbreaking 3-2 loss against Germany in the semi-final of the event, but on the day hit back with brilliant performances from the captain himself and PR Sreejesh. Harmanpreet lauded Sreejesh for his incredible service to the sport and said that India wanted to dedicate the Paris Olympics to him.

"Medal is medal. Both medals are big, I think in terms of Indian hockey, we are going up again, showing that we can beat any team in the world," India captain Harmanpreet Singh said.

"India's history in hockey is huge. We are trying to get us back to the top again. It is my humble plea that please support us and we will definitely do better next time," he further added.

Harmanpreet converted two Penalty Corners on the day and led the charge for the Indian. He apologised to the fans and the country for missing out on the Gold medal.

"This is a big achievement for us. One has to wait for Olympics for four years. Our mentality is that we want to win always. We wanted to win gold and people believed in us that we can win gold, and for that, I apologise. We could have done it, but we just fell short. But we have won back to back medals and that is a big achievement for India," the captain said.

"Our mentality was to keep the defence strong. We have one of the best Penalty Corner defence in the world and obviously we are very very happy to win our last match at Paris Olympics," he further added.

Harmanpreet had special praise saved for PR Sreejesh and signed off by saying that Sreejesh's retirement was an emotional moment for the team.

"There are kids in our team, who are younger than PR Sreejesh's career. He has been with us for such a long time and he has made India proud. It was an emotional moment for the team and we wanted to dedicate this tournament to PR Sreejesh," concluded Harmanpreet Singh.

Indian wrestler Antim Panghal’s sister held by police after using accreditation

More drama has emerged from the Indian wrestling community in Paris after the sister of one of their competitors was detained by police for attempting to enter the athletes’ village with her sibling’s accreditation. The same wrestler had to deny speculation her coaches got into a serious dispute with a Parisian taxi driver.

Only the interventions of India’s chef de mission enabled Nisha Panghal to be released from a police station in Saint-Denis at 11.30pm on Wednesday night. Reports in India say the wrestler Antim Panghal has had her accreditation cancelled by a furious Indian Olympic Association and is staying in a Paris hotel before her flight home.

Indian wrestling was already reeling from the shock disqualification of Vinesh Phogat before her gold medal bout. Phogat was 100 grams overweight and eliminated from the competition, triggering a note of sympathy from the prime minister of India. Phogat has since announced her retirement from wrestling. “Wrestling won and I lost,” wrote Phogat in an emotional social media post on Thursday morning. “My dreams are shattered. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all. I am sorry.”

Antim Panghal suffered a heavy loss to Turkey’s Yetgil Zeynep on Wednesday. World is One News first reported a message sent by security at the athletes’ village to Indian team management shortly after 8pm. It read: “There is someone with the accreditation of your athlete trying to enter the Olympic village via workforce entrance. According to our security colleagues at the workforce entrance, the person who is trying to enter with this accreditation does not seem to be the owner of the accreditation.”

A follow-up message says: “She is being escorted to the police station for the formal procedures of filing the police report. The address of the police station is 37 Rue de Landy, Saint-Denis.”

On Thursday, Antim Panghal posted a video claiming she had gone to her sister’s hotel after feeling unwell. “It wasn’t my day yesterday, as I lost my bout,” the wrestler said. “But, since I’ve lost, talks are going on that my sister has been arrested by the police, or I’ve been arrested by the police, nothing of that sort has happened.

“When I lost my bout yesterday, I got a fever. My sister, who has been living in a hotel, wanted to take me there. I had taken permission from my coaches to go with her, as I wasn’t feeling well.

“They gave me permission and I came to the hotel. When I came here, I needed some of my stuff, which was still in the Olympic Village. As I was unwell, I slept. My sister took my accreditation card and went to the village. She asked the authorities there if she was allowed to get my stuff from the village. The authorities took away the accreditation card from her and took her to the police station for verification. This was the only reason she was taken to the police station.”

Medal per capita is dumb indicator, By that metric even USA ranks 42 and China ends up being listed as 67th!!
Its for armchair socialogists!
Medal v/s GDP and Medal v/s GDP per capita have a decent correlation!

Some people always hype things. Some stay sane. Neeraj will be a double olympic medalist. Gold and silver/ bronze. That's good enough for an individual athlete. He's done his job for athletics in india.

India came with a target of 10 medals this time but we will get only 6 medals, which is 1 medal less than Tokyo. We missed at least 7 medals with 4th place finishes. Those are bigger things to improve not 1 medal/ athlete. Its OK if a Pak athlete wins, in sports the best man/ woman should always win.

Hockey medal presentation is in progress.

The Netherlands beat Germany 3-1 in a shootout after a 1-1 draw to win the gold medal in men's hockey at the Paris Olympics on Thursday with Duco Telgenkamp firing home the final penalty shot past goalkeeper Jean-Paul Danneberg.

India may get one more bronze if Sehrawat wins in wrestling.
But that's it. No Gold for India this time.

Good that South Asia got at least one gold overall.

Chalo a Solid base of 5 medals atleast, and literally this is worst sequence of lucks we have ever had.
Can't have such combined bad luck almost everywhere. Even a couple of bronze were potentially gold/silver.
We need some more Bhakti guys !! :p
I will still classify this Paris performance better than Tokyo. Tokyo was absolute luck in our favor, this is us with hardest of luck! I will take these 5 or hopefully 6-7 medals !

Gold for Akhand Bharat !

Deserving winner and a freak human. Perfect performance at perfect stage ! So happy for Arshad!

Such a humble man rising from a very humble upbringing and equally happy for Neeraj, also from very bumble background, to win a gold and silver in two consecutive Olympic athletics such an outstanding achievement, only a few freak humans have done that in history! Happy for the duo 🎉

I loved two events today first was magomed ramazanov beating USA's Aaron brooks in semi final in wrestling and just like neeraj they were overhyping that brooks guy so much just because he beat David Taylor.

Arrogant people should always be fell flat on their faces.

Shukar Allah for humbling these losers
