Paris Olympics (2024) - Discussion Thread

Will start the finals as medal contenders, in no specific order and anything can happen during the day/ event!
I would say Neeraj as favorite to win Gold again. He looks better than ever before and the way he did that 89 meter qualification. I believe he has been crossing 90 meter in training comfortably and he will show that to the world as well when the time comes.

Before today, Japan Yui Susaki held an 82-0 international record!

Today, Vinesh Phogat became the first wrestler to take down the World no. 1 and Tokyo Olympic gold medallist in an international meet

Congratulations to vinesh phogat and this is the same Vinesh Phogat that the government did not support , who was harassed by Brijbhushan, abused by a section of people and media has done it for India.

So far he never threw above 90 officially.

Nadeem, peters and Jakub have all done that atleast once in their careers.

Neeraj didnt even look like he put in full effort on that throw and almost reached 90. I think he could have easily crossed the mark

Nadeem's throw looked very effortless too

Ned vs Spain

Hockey Semi final 1 about to commence soon, Dutch start as favorites but Spain took current champions belgium down in quarters. Exciting match on cards....

Vinesh will compete against Guzman Lopez of Cuba who is the pan american champion in her semi final.

This is his time. He was quite young in 2020 Tokyo Olympics. He has been training well and I believe he will cross that. He should given that this is his peak.

Adam Peaty claims athletes at Paris Olympics found worms in their food

Adam Peaty has claimed athletes at Paris 2024 have found worms in their food as he criticised inadequate catering at the Olympic village.

The six-time Olympic medallist complained about both the quantity and quality of food on offer as he said it would impact the performances of athletes.

Adam Peaty looks on during the men’s 4x100m medley relay final.

“The catering isn’t good enough for the level the athletes are expected to perform,” Peaty told the i. “We need to give the best we possibly can. [In] Tokyo the food was incredible. Rio was incredible. But this time around? There wasn’t enough protein options, long queues, waiting 30 minutes for food because there’s no queuing system.”

“I like my fish and people are finding worms in the fish. It’s just not good enough. The standard, we’re looking at the best of the best in the world, and we’re not feeding them the best.”

A Paris 2024 spokesperson told the i: “We are listening to the athletes and take their feedback very seriously. Since the opening of the village, our partner Sodexo Live! has been working proactively to adapt supplies to the growing use of the Olympic Village restaurants, as well as to the actual consumption by athletes observed over the first few days.

“As a result, the quantities of certain products has been significantly increased and additional staff have been deployed to ensure the service runs smoothly.”

Worst organized Olympics since Athens 2004.
French have been exposed at global stage in an outstanding fashion!
Train sabotage attacks, meh opening ceremony, religious controversies, Dirty river, list of complaints from athletes getting longer and longer, low quality Swimming pool, idiotic management of football matches and Argentina issue.

What else is remaining?

No 1 ranked Dutch thrash Spain 4-0 to storm into hockey men's finals.

No 2 ranked Germany will play their semi final in the next 3 hours.

She's got this!
Just saw a Tweet about her by Olivia Lichti - a Canadian wrestler

Shoutout to freaking Vinesh, man. Lately she’s:
- lead a movement condemning a leader of the Indian wrestling federation with multiple sexual assault allegations
- dropped from 53 to 50kg - a brutal cut
- recovered from a torn ACL
- beat THE Yui Susaki

If they had medals for mental strength in the Olympics, she'd go home with a Phelps sized haul.

Reading terrible things about accommodation for Athletes in Paris.

It seems athletes are given card board boxes for beds, Air Condition is not provided and there are worms in the food of athletes.

Environmental friendly Olympics is getting blasted in social media.

That's fine. They are not here for 5 star accommodations. Card board beds have started from tokyo, it's a sustainable idea and cuts costs massively. All future events should follow it. Else the games are white elephants for hosts

It seems those beds are extremely uncomfortable which is not letting athletes get proper rest to perform at optimum level.

I am not following Olympics, but this is what is coming on social media and news outlets.

Nadeem's coach speaking to ary news has claimed Arshad can throw a 95m throw and claim gold in the finals.

They sound very confident. Maybe they are training well and he can win gold after a long time for pak.

The beds are cardboard but are very sturdy, the mattresses might not be that great but its comfortable accommodation at that scale.

They should have included air conditioning though. It can get very warm in summer and walls keep in the heat. So even 25 degrees can feel like 30+ indoors

If tonight umpires remains unbiased, then India will beat Germany. In this Olympics umpires are biased toward European athletes

Iran on the verge of winning the 97 kg semi final.

Phogat is next on Mat B

India leading 1-0 against Germany.

at least 2 golds and one silver in Hockey, Javelin, and Wrestling would mean a improvement over Tokyo

Vinesh will face usa wrestler in the finals, can't assume gold yet.

Even Neeraj has only thrown 89.xx
There are folks who threw 88.xx and 87.xx

Hockey is still going on in q1

Qualifying distances dont matter much, they dont give it their all as long as they can reach automatic qualifying. Neeraj and Phogat can win golds. Hockey will be harder because its Netherlands.

Not saying it will happen 100% - nothing is guaranteed obviously, but there is a good chance of 2 golds

Vinesh Phogat scripts history; becomes first Indian woman wrestler to enter Olympics final

Vinesh Phogat scripted history on Tuesday as she became the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final after beating Yusneylis Guzman Lopez of Cuba 5-0 in the women's freestyle 50kg semi-final.

A victory in the semifinals today has secured Phogat a silver medal, but the prominent Indian wrestler will be aiming for gold in the finals.
Earlier in the day, Phogat defeated Ukraine's Oksana Livach in the last-eight stage after causing the biggest wrestling upset in this games when she shocked four-time world champion and reigning gold-medallist Yui Susaki of Japan on points to enter the quarter-finals.

Trailing 0-2 after conceding penalty points for passivity, the Indian wrestler came back brilliantly in the last five seconds to take down the top seed by clinching three points to win 3-2.

Vinesh had failed to win a medal in her two previous Olympic appearances.

PC awarded to Germany... India has been very poor in the 4th quarter

Germany through to the finals of hockey semis.

India will play spain for bronze.

Ned vs germany for gold

If the government tries to glorify her after the shameful way they've treated her and the other wrestlers, I'll puke. Honestly, I'll just puke and it'll be someone else's job to clean up.

1. The government treated her for wanting things done outside the law.

2. Government gave her all the support needed for her olympic games.

Two different things.

Phogat and Neeraj will win gold for India, they won't choke like the hockey wallahs.

Usa and China neck to neck in gold medal count. China still has boxing and tt golds to come. Usa has athletics.

Will be a close finish.

Of course they will pretend it never happened and try to milk it as much as possible

Without Rohidas it was always going to be a challenge but India kept pace for three quarters. In the 4th quarter they ran out of steam

France defeats Canada to set up Olympic basketball semi-final rematch with Germany

France lined up a rematch with Germany in the men's Olympic basketball semi-finals after an 82-73 win on Tuesday over previously unbeaten Canada.

Guerschon Yabusele and Isaia Cordinier picked up the slack for a subdued Victor Wembanyama, helping establish an early advantage that France never relinquished.

Yabusele led the way for the hosts with 22 points and Cordinier added 20. Evan Fournier scored 15 and Mathias Lessort notched 13 as Wembanyama was limited to seven, while still hauling down 12 rebounds.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a game-high 27 points for Canada, with RJ Barrett contributing 16.

France advance to face Germany for the second time in under a week on Thursday, having lost 85-71 to the World Cup champions in Lille last Friday.

Ireland's Kellie Harrington made history by winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals with victory against China's Wenlu Yang in the women's 60kg final at Roland Garros.

After the bout, Harrington said that would be the end of her boxing career and the start of her "life chapter" with her partner, Mandy.

And for the 34-year-old, it was the perfect way to go out.

Sable will be in top 8 but no chance of medal, Ethiopians (3) and Kenyans (2) coordinate among themselves to block out others. Fighting against 5 top class competitors who are a team is insanely hard in distance running.

Zheng, 11, becomes China's youngest Olympian

An 11-year-old who was born on the penultimate day of the London 2012 Olympics has become China's youngest Olympian.

Zheng Haohao was among the competitors in the women's skateboarding park in Paris, which also featured Team GB teenager Sky Brown.

Zheng scored a best of 63.19 to finish 18th in the preliminary round - missing out on a final that was won by Australia's Arisa Trew, 14.

Having only taken up skateboarding at the age of seven, she leaves France as one of the youngest Olympians of all time.

And she has further reason to celebrate this week - she turns 12 on Sunday.

The kids are all right

Olympic skateboarding has featured a largely youthful field at both of its Games so far.

All three medallists in Paris were teenagers, with Brown, 16, and Japan's Kokona Hiraki, 15, repeating their podium finishes from the last Games.

Brazil's Dora Varella was the veteran of the event at 23, but skateboarding is not exclusively for the young, with 51-year-old Andy Macdonald set to compete for Team GB in the men's event.

Macdonald has won eight gold medals at the X Games - all before Zheng was born.

But Macdonald has nothing on the oldest athlete at the Paris Games, with Juan Antonio Jimenez of Spain competing in the equestrian at the age of 65.

Zheng, meanwhile, will go down in the history books alongside the likes of Dimitrios Loundras, who took team bronze in gymnastics in 1896 at the age of 10 and remains the youngest confirmed Olympic athlete.

His record may have been surpassed by a boy, thought to be seven or eight, who coxed a Dutch boat in Paris in 1900, but his identity remains unknown.

Marjorie Gesting of the United States is the youngest female gold medallist in the history of the summer Games, winning 3m springboard diving gold at the age of 13 in 1936.

Zheng may not have surpassed her, but a gold in Los Angeles in four years' time would be an excellent 16th birthday present.

Vinesh failed to make the 50kg cut. What a colossal disappointment!

It was hard obviously. She'd gone from 54 to 50 for these Olympics but if she made it so far, couldn't she and her support team manage it on the day?

Dumb and unprofessional by Phogat, these important things like Wt should've been taken care of well in advance.

Absolutely. To meet the qualification yesterday and fail it today is sheer unprofessionalism. Heads must roll.

Sad for Vinesh and her team. Its not easy to move weight segments in wrestling.

Usa will get gold and semi finalists a bronze now. No medal for Vinesh.

Whose head?

She was 50kg yesterday morning.

She fought 3 bouts and her weight increased by 2kgs by night? What is this sorcery?

And finally today morning she is overweight by 100gms?

Most likely her's but whoever's helping her manage this as well - probably her coach. They must've squeezed every drop of water out of her yesterday for the weighing in for the prelims.

Didn't plan well enough today.

Yesterday night only she knew she was 2kg overweight

As I keep saying you need influence in Ioc to manage these minor things. If it was uk or usa or Chinese athlete it would have been managed or given more time.

This is a disaster. Don't they weigh before every match. If they weighed here before yesterday, then at least a silver should be given

Media started articles from yesterday that gold chahiye. Ab banao movie.

You should never count the chickens before they hatch.

She beat the best wrestler and now has to come away empty handed
It's brutal. Massive disappointment

Too harsh. I take it back. Said in the heat of the moment.

My guess is they left it a bit too late yesterday after the bouts and celebrations yesterday to start shedding water weight for the morning weigh-in. Still unprofessional but who can point fingers given the incredible circumstances yesterday.

Vinesh - you're still a heroine!

This is brutal.
But a bigger lesson is learnt by Bharatiyas today.

You learn some to inf about sports every day, more in defeats than in wins.

Indian Wrestler Vinesh Phogat Out Of Paris Olympics Over Weight, Billion Hearts Break

India's ace grappler Vinesh Phogat stood on the cusp of ultimate glory in the Paris Olympic Games 2024 but has now be disqualified from the competition entirely. Vinesh, who was competing in the 50kg freestyle wrestling category, is out of the competition, having been weighed over the limit for her event. Vinesh usually competes in the 53kg category but brought her weight down to 50kg for the Paris Olympics. On Day 2 of her weigh-in, however, Vinesh was found weighing over the desired limit, though by a small margin of about 100 grams.

Vinesh reportedly tried to do all she could to come under the desired weight, be it skipping meals, or running. She didn't sleep the entire night, hoping to fall under the weight category. The Indian officials also asked the Olympic committee for more time but the efforts went in vain.

Earlier, Vinesh had scripted history by becoming the first Indian woman to reach the final of a wrestling event in Olympic Games. But, fate had something else in store for her. The Indian coach revealed that Vinesh was found overweight by just 100gm on Wednesday morning. Though the margin was small, the rules do not allow for an exception to be made.

"She was found overweight by 100gm this morning. The rules do not allow this and she has been disqualified," said an Indian coach.

As a result of Vinesh's disqualification, she will not win any medal in the Paris Games. Though Vinesh was assured of a silver, her disqualification means that she would need to return home empty-handed.

Vinesh's first bout in the Paris Games was arguably the toughest one. She was pitted against Japanese wrestler Yui Susaki who had never lost a bout in her international career and also a four-time world Olympic champion. But then, Vinesh happened.

It was Vinesh's struggles off the field that helped her draw power and use a perfect game plan, stunned the reigning Olympic champion in one of the biggest upsets the Games have ever seen.

Vinesh next defeated Oksana Livach of Ukraine to secure a berth in the semi-finals of the women's 50kg freestyle event. Tears of joy came down rolling her cheeks but the job wasn't done yet.

Listen to the latest songs, only on JioSaavn.com

In the semifinals, Vinesh outmuscled Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman Lopez to confirm a medal and become the first Indian woman wrestler to reach the final at the Olympics.

But, on Tuesday morning, the dreams of Vinesh and those of 1.4 billion Indians, shattered.

Yesterday it was looking like two golds and one silver, then 2 golds and at least a bronze . Now Neeraj is the only hope. This Olympics has been a disappointment, Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong

Naam kya Barbad kiya. Its her support team's fault. Dropped the ball on such a massive stage.

She wasnt caught doping. This is a mistake

Why blame support staff?

The only other thing they could have done was to call in sick and settle for silver.

She was competing one category down. They had to be focussed on keeping her weight down even through the day. This was a risk.

Weight doesnt go massively up or down on its own especially for athletes with controlled and monitored diets. It might be a water retention issue, what ever it is they had to take the same precautions through the day yesterday too, or not have her so close to 50kg in the first place

UWW has 53kg catagory for WCs and 50 for Olympics.
