Paris Olympics (2024) - Discussion Thread

Unofrtunately I think Germany is too strong for India. I saw the Ger vs Arg quarterfinal and they were very impressive. Not to mention they are historically a clutch team who always get to the finals.

India defeated Germany in bronze medal clash in Tokyo Olympics

Will be fun if Bharat ended up with just bronzes and silvers and Pakistan which is sustaining on international donations walk away with the Javelin gold and leave us 10s of places behind in the table. :yk

India has already missed 3 bronze medals by narrowest of margins this time. I am prepared to be trolled :p
We will have record number of top 4 positions this time, thats a given already :p
3 bronze, 3 4th positions, and 2 SFs results awaited in Badminton and Hockey!
Wrestling, weightlifting and Javelin are still pending.

another bronze medal match in shooting is awaited.. very likely will end up 4th there too :p

Hockey Silver/Gold and Neeraj Chopra gold can still revive this campaign

5 4th positions so far and almost all losing bronze by a whisker!!
Yeah mind says we've made progress and growth is not always linear but it's tough not to get disheartened. Antim Pangal, Neeraj Chopra and Hockey are the only realistic hopes left from a double digit medal aspiration. It's pretty clear we won't hit the last Olympics mark.

In tokyo, the only 4th position was women's hockey and they were not a medal contender anyways.
Anyone who close to medal got the medal, almost 100% hit rate in medal events. That's rare.

We have competed for more medals this time than Tokyo already. So its an improvement even if medal tally appears slimmer!

We lost 3 medals today with semi final losses.

Anyway, unless we win a silver or bronze, we are going to trail in medal standings.

Waiting eagerly for wrestling, javelin and hockey now. Weight lifting, a slender chance for silver

Ya but medal count/ standings matter in the end. With remaining events, if we fail to clinch any silver/ gold then the medal standing would be outside of 50. 😒

and shooting is such a close sport , you cant always guarantee medals from it. Thank heavens for Manu's great performance

Javelin qualification is tomorrow. We will get an idea what is the current form of Neeraj and Arshad by this time tomorrow

Spain beat Morocco to reach men's football final

Spain will meet France in the final of the men's Olympic football competition after a 2-1 comeback victory over Morocco.

The 2020 silver medallists fell behind in the first half of the semi-final after tournament top scorer Soufiane Rahimi converted a penalty for his sixth goal at the Games.

Barcelona's Fermin Lopez equalised midway through the second half in Marseille after pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area.

Substitute Juanlu Sanchez then drilled home a winner five minutes from time to clinch his side's place in Friday's final in Paris, where they will meet Thierry Henry's France side (20:00 BST).

The hosts overcame Egypt 3-1 after extra time in the other last-four tie.

Morocco will face Egypt in the bronze medal match in Nantes on Thursday.

Hodgkinson wins 800m gold to end wait for global title

Great Britain's Keely Hodgkinson dominated the Olympic 800m final to win gold in Paris and end her wait for a global title.

The 22-year-old had finished second at successive World Championships after claiming a stunning silver on her Olympic debut in Tokyo as a teenager in 2021.

But Hodgkinson put that series of near-misses on the sport's biggest stages behind her as she took charge of the final and would not relent as Kenyan rival Mary Moraa threatened to pass on the outside.

Crossing the line in one minute 56.72 seconds, Hodgkinson could not hide her emotion as the magnitude of her achievement struck - having matched Kelly Holmes' 800m gold in Athens 20 years ago.

Ethiopia's Tsige Duguma (1:57.15) won silver behind Hodgkinson, who instinctively punched the air in delight and donned a crown as she celebrated with the crowd, while world champion Moraa (1:57.42) was third at the Stade de France.

Hodgkinson, already a four-time European champion in as many years as a professional, posed for photos and signed autographs as she savoured the golden moment she has long dreamed of.

"I think [stepping on the podium] is when it will sink in and you will see some real emotion from me," Hodgkinson said.

"I have worked really hard for the last year and I think you can see how much it meant to me when I crossed the line. I can't believe I have finally done it!"

This was Great Britain's first Olympic track title since Mo Farah won the 5,000m and 10,000m double at Rio 2016.

Hodgkinson, meanwhile, becomes only the 10th British woman to win athletics gold at a Games.

Duplantis breaks pole vault world record on way to gold

Sweden's Armand Duplantis set a new world record of 6.25m after winning gold in the men's pole vault.

The 24-year-old, who had secured successive Olympic titles by clearing six metres, set an Olympic record of 6.10m with his next attempt.

And he improved his world best of 6.24m, that he set in April, by one centimetre at his third and final attempt, to the delight of the crowd in the Stade de France.

The two-time world champion has now broken the record on nine occasions.

Duplantis, the first athlete to retain the pole vault title since American Bob Richards in 1952 and 1956, raced to his friends and family after breaking the world record.

He then embarked on a lap of the track draped in the Swedish flag, as Abba's 'Dancing Queen' blasted out of the stadium sound system.

“I haven’t processed how fantastic that moment was," said Duplantis. "It’s one of those things that you don’t really feel is real it's such an out of body experience.

"The biggest dream since a kid was to break the world record at the Olympics, and I’ve been able to do that in front of the most ridiculous crowd I’ve ever competed in front of.”

American Sam Kendricks cleared 5.95m to take silver, while Greece's Emmanouil Karalis secured bronze on countback with a best of 5.90m.

Sad end to our streak of Badminton Olympic medals!

This whole Olympics has been a case of so near yet so far. Only a couple of hopes left now.

What I observed from Lakshya’s matches against Axelson and bronz medal match that if his opponent wins 7-8 points in a row, Lakshya comes under pressure and upsets his rhythm. If he cover this, then he will become badminton champion

Anybody would be pressured in such a situation but Lakshya's just 22. Hopefully a long and very successful career ahead of him as you say

Neeraj Chopra and Arshad Nadeem will come face to face today in the Javelin throw event. The only event, me being a Pakistani, I am interested in.

Hoping for this.

It will be a huge moment.

If they win gold, I think they would deserve a huge parade and I would personally make sure to attend it.
They would deserve a much bigger parade than the cricket team got when they won the T20 wc. It's a much bigger achievement!

Fully agreed.

Winning the Hockey Olympcis gold will be a massive thing.

Unlikely but if at all it happens, it will a epic achievement

Group A throws are done as the top 4 athletes have qualified from there. (87.76m was the highest from that group)

Now it is time for Group B throw. Arshad and Neeraj Chopra will be the most anticipated guys from this group.

No. There is a young German, Max Dehning who threw 90m this season, he is the hot favorite this time around.

Vinish Phogat creates one of the biggest upsets in wrestling taking down unbeaten Japanese Sasuki Yui, in the first round itself

India will play with only 15 men today in hockey semis against Germany who have all 16 players available for substitutions.

Back against the wall situation for the Indians, let's see what can they bring on to the table today!

Great result . Yui Susiuki has been really dominant. Could we get a medal in wrestling

Phogat was incredible apparently 2-0 down on points with 5 seconds to go and executes a takedown beating the invincible Susuki. She'd asked for a review and my heart was in my mouth as I waited for ESPN to refresh on the results of the review.

'Our gold medals are squeaky clean' - China slams doping doubts

"Any doubt is just a joke. Stress only makes us stronger," Qin Haiyang - a part of China's history-making men’s 4x100m medley quartet posted after their unprecedented victory over the US on Monday.

Qin's seeming defiance came at the tail end of what has been a challenging time for China in the pool.

Some of the country's top swimmers - including Qin and his relay teammate Sun Jiajun- have been in the spotlight after a slew of doping allegations, followed by contentious US claims that the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) was covering it up.

They were among 23 Chinese swimmers who reportedly returned positive doping tests prior to the Tokyo Olympics.

And although Chinese swimmers have been drug-tested twice as much as some other nations this year before heading to Paris, their performances have been met with scepticism.

Right after the medley event on Monday, Team GB's Adam Peaty opened his fire on the Chinese team, saying "there's no point winning if you're not winning fair".

Swim legend Michael Phelps who has been vocal about doping issues also doubled down. "If you test positive, you should never be allowed to come back and compete again, cut and dry," he told news agency Associated Press. "I believe one and done."

To the Chinese swimming team and their millions of fans back home, however, the victory brought joy and vindication.

The hashtag "China winning gold medal at 4x100m medley relay" was viewed 760 million times on Weibo.

"China's gold medal are squeaky clean, we won it with our competence!" A comment racked up more than 8,000 likes on Weibo reads.

"It's been so hard for the Chinese swimming team," read another top comment.

The pressure has indeed been immense.

And this has been reflected in comments by China's new breakout star Pan Zhanle, who swam the crucial anchor leg of the relay and also won the men's 100m freestyle final with a new world record.

After his 100m win last week, Pan - who had not been among the revealed names of positive test results - told Chinese media that he felt that the team was "looked down on" by some foreign swimmers, adding that Australia's Kyle Chalmers had snubbed him when he tried to say hello.

And although Pan was not among those who tested positive, his record-breaking performance was questioned by former Australian Olympic swimmer Brett Hawke who posted on Instagram that it's not "humanly possible to beat that field".

German athlete Angelina Köhler also questioned the bronze-winning performance of China's Zhang Yufei - who was also among the 23 who had previously tested positive . Köhler who did not make the podium, reportedly told reporters after the swim that "stories like that always have a bad flavour".

Zhang, who won a silver and five bronzes in Paris, was also defiant.

"Why should Chinese swimmers be questioned when they swim fast? Why did no one dare to question USA's Michael Phelps when he got eight gold medals?" she asked in a press conference.

The tension has spilled beyond the pool too. China's anti-doping agency (Chinada) released a statement on Tuesday, accusing its US counterpart Usada of displaying double standards.

The press release highlighted the case of US sprinter Erriyon Knighton. Knighton, a world silver medallist who is competing in the men's 200m sprint this week, was not suspended after testing positive for the banned substance trenbolone earlier this year. Like in the case of the Chinese swimmers, the arbitrator had found the result was likely caused by contaminated meat.

Meanwhile Chinese fans are also taking matters to their own hands.

Adam Peaty's Instagram account was flooded with angry comments in the past day. Even his girlfriend's account was not spared. "Curious why you're only attacking China but none of the other countries that won ahead of you as well... pretty weird," a top comment under Peaty's most recent post reads.

Brett Hawke, who is now a swimming coach, has also been hit with angry comments on his Instagram account. He has now deleted the video he first posted about Pan and limited comments on his posts.

Instead, on a recent post about the men's medley results, his caption simply said: "Chinese men are victorious!"

Another serious contender. 88.63m throw from Anderson Peters, just behind Neeraj and second best of the overall qualification round.

There is no Johannes Vetter in this Olympics. Absolute legend before his shoulder injury. Otherwise a pre shoulder issue Vetter was a beast. Personal best of 96-97 meters.

This time around. I would put Neeraj Chopra, Julius Weber, Arshad Nadeem and Anderson Peters favorites to win a medal. Jakub Vadlejch can also surprise.

Weber, Jakub, Peters, Nadeem, Neeraj

Will start the finals as medal contenders, in no specific order and anything can happen during the day/ event!

All the best to above 5 athletes in finals on 7th of August!

Phogat got so much criticism online after being a prominent part of protests against Brij Bhushan Singh, what a come back She's our Simone Biles

Gotta say Neeraj reminds me of Mike Tyson with that speed and explosive energy for his size. While it's true that Arshad is physically a more imposing specimen, no amount of training will make him sprint and explode like Neeraj.

Neeraj has that Akhtar/Brett Lee level explosiveness, while Arshad is more of an Ambrose/Holding in his style.

There are 2 more matches. Hang on!!

Yui Susaki won gold in last olympics without conceding even a single point. She is the current world champion.
Semi-finals man. Who would've thought it? She was completely counted out especially given her semi-retirement after the protest. She came 9th and 10th in the last couple of Olympics.

Enough material for a sequel. Hopefully she caps it with a medal.
