Paris Olympics (2024) - Discussion Thread

This is so unfortunate for Phogat. SHe was on a roll to win big but it was a huge under TBH. In no time, the weight thing goes out of india's hands and so is the medal.

Phogat should have been sent in her natural weight category.

Antim was completely thrashed by her opponent. Not even a contest

Hockey and Neeraj are the only realistic hopes now. I dont think we can compete in Steeple chase. Yesterday saw the 3000m womens SC and the African athletes were way ahead of the white runners, like in a category of their own

Maybe.
But our guy Avinash Sable took on the kenyan runners in CWC 2022 and got a silver thus breaking the Kenyan stronghold on all the 3 medals for a long time and several games.
who knows, maybe he'll send the thunder flash up them african and euro again! but what a guy, humble, dignified and u'd have to be super hard hearted not to be his fan.
Jyothi yarraji in the hurdles - another must watch - not that she is a medal hope at olympic levels - but she's good at asian and CWC levels.
overall, we have had several near misses- several disappointments - hope we learn from this and come back - better - improved - when the next games roll around.

This olympics, it feels like 2018 asiad, we went down before the superb upswing in 2022.

Lots of 4th place finishes and quarter final losses.

Why people in India blaming BJP for her disqualification? Why her disqualification is getting political?

Why people in India blaming BJP for her disqualification? Why her disqualification is getting political?

Wrestling federation chief was a scumbag and sexually harassing women athletes and a lot of wrestlers protested against it. Since the former chief is a BJP member, the action and enquiry against him was slow walked which angered the wrestlers further. They did a dharna and police treated the athletes with force which became a very big political issue.

Even in the run up to this Olympics, Phogat was not happy with the scheduling of the trials. She tried for both 50 and 53 but lost in 53 kg trials. She qualified in 50 kg which is not her natural weight.

So the entire wrestling saga in the Olympics was very political and people are pissed and blaming politics for her weight disqualification. I don think there was any sabotage but you never know with inflated egos of the higher ups in the body

Vinesh Phogat was provided with every facility, including personal staff: Sports Minister

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that the Indian Olympic Association lodged a strong protest with the United World Wrestling over Vinesh Phogat's disqualification from the Olympics.

In a statement, Mandaviya said the government had provided all possible assistance to Phogat according to her requirement, which included personal staff.

"Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has been disqualified from the Paris Olympics due to being overweight by 100 gm. Vinesh was playing in the 50 kg category and her weight had to be 50 kg for the competition. According to the rules and regulations of UWW (United World Wrestling), for all competitions, weigh-ins are organised every morning for the respective category," Mandaviya said.

Australian Olympic hockey player arrested for allegedly buying cocaine in Paris

Australian Olympic hockey player Tom Craig is in custody in Paris after allegedly trying to buy cocaine on the streets of the French capital on Tuesday night.

The identity of the player was not confirmed by the Australian Olympic Committee but it issued a statement on Wednesday morning regarding the arrest.

“The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has confirmed an Australian hockey team member is in custody after being arrested in Paris on August 6th,” a spokesperson said.

“No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member.”

The Paris public prosecutors office confirmed to Guardian Australia that police officers had witnessed a cocaine transaction in the ninth arrondissement of the city on Tuesday night, and arrested two men.

“Police officers … arrested the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia and said to be a member of the Australian field hockey team,” a spokesperson said.

“In view of the quantities of narcotics seized from the seller, the investigations were entrusted to the narcotics brigade. Both people are in police custody.”

Craig, an experienced member of the team, was playing at his second Olympic Games after winning a silver medal at the Tokyo Games three years ago.

The episode comes at the end of a disappointing Olympic campaign for both Australia’s hockey teams.

The Kookaburras lost 2-0 to Netherlands in their quarter-final on Sunday, after the men’s team came into the tournament with medal aspirations, while the Hockeyroos, the women’s team, went down to China 3-2 on Monday.

Under the rules in place for the Olympic Village in Tokyo, players were required to vacate their rooms within 48 hours of the completion of their competition.

Both teams attended a post-tournament function on Tuesday.

Naam kya Barbad kiya. Its her support team's fault. Dropped the ball on such a massive stage.

She wasnt caught doping. This is a mistake

If she used 6 months on weight management instead of falling to plot of India alliance to stage agitation

Why people in India blaming BJP for her disqualification? Why her disqualification is getting political?

Exactly…. Athletes fist job is to do hard practice 4 years to achieve medal. Even if they wanted to show angst on Brijbhushan, 1-2 days protest/ agitation was enough. Because Indian judiciary relies on the evidence before giving judgement. However India alliance leaders in order to trouble BJP government, used these athletes as pawn for their political gains.

India media is full of sore losers. Rules are not introduced overnight to disqualify her, so accept the results and move on. Yes the rule is bad, considering the margin of just 100 grams.

Athletes should at least be given a few grams of leniency or have a break day in between the finals and qualification rounds so that there is ample time to get back to required weight. South Asian genes are also not good at losing weight so quickly when you are already lean.

WFI to investigate Vinesh Phogat's support staff post-Olympics disqualification

The Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Sanjay Singh said an investigation would be initiated into wrestler Vinesh Phogat's support staff after her disqualification from the Paris Olympics, hours ahead of her gold medal bout. Vinesh, who weighed almost 100 grams over the allowed limit, saw her semi-final opponent, Cuba's Yusneylys Guzman, advance to the final in her place.

Sanjay Singh, who also spoke to India Today on Wednesday afternoon, stressed that the failed weigh-in was not Vinesh Phogat’s fault and that her support staff, including coach Woller Akos and physio Ashwini Jiwan Patil, need to take responsibility for the missed medal. As the nation was hoping to see the first female Olympic champion, the news of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification due to the failed weigh-in in Paris on Wednesday morning sent shockwaves.

Vinesh's usual weight is around 57 kg, but she competes in the 50 kg category, requiring significant effort to stay within the limit. Before her semi-final match, Vinesh's weight was precariously close to the threshold at 49.9 kg. Post-match, she weighed 52.7 kg and had to work continuously to reduce it without breaks for food or drink. Despite efforts, she managed to get down to 50.1 kg by the next morning but ran out of time to shed the remaining weight.

It was Vinesh Phogat's third Olympic appearance, but her first in the women's 50kg category. Previously, the Haryana wrestler competed in the 53kg category. However, she had to vacate that weight class after young Antim Panghal secured a quota for India in that category, prompting Vinesh to drop down to 50kg, where she won India's selection trials.

This situation raises questions about the role and responsibility of her support staff, including her renowned Hungarian coach Woller Akos and physio Ashwini Jiwan Patil. Reports suggest that Vinesh gained a couple of kilos by Tuesday night. In a desperate attempt to bring her weight down, her team resorted to extreme measures. Vinesh endured a sleepless night, consuming minimal water, and spent hours exercising at the Olympic Games village gym.

Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, the Chief Medical Officer of the Indian contingent, confirmed that drastic measures were taken to reduce Vinesh's weight. Pardiwala confirmed that even cut Vinesh’s hair on Wednesday morning, but were not able to shed the final 100 grams.

“Weight cuts cause weakness and energy depletion. This is counterproductive to participation. So most wrestlers will thereafter go in for some amount of energy restoration with limited water and high-energy foods. These are usually given after the weigh-in. The calculation from the nutritionist that is done is athlete-specific. Vinesh's nutritionist felt that the usual amount that she takes -- which is about 1.5kg of nutrition over the day which gives enough to give her energy for the bouts," Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala said on Wednesday.

So even Antim had to starve 2 days to meet the weight cricteria and she was just too weak to compete.

Wah re Wah.

US wrestling great demands silver medal for Vinesh Phogat, Sakshee Malikkh agrees

US wrestling legend Jordan Burroughs has publicly demanded a silver medal for Vinesh Phogat, the Indian wrestler disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 on Wednesday. Vinesh was found to be 100 grams overweight during the weigh-in on the second day of the competition, leading to her disqualification from the Olympic wrestling final bout.

The disqualification of Phogat, who failed to make weight for her gold-medal match, has caused an uproar not only in India but across the global wrestling community. Jordan Burroughs, a six-time World Championship gold medalist and a gold medalist at the London 2012 Olympics, voiced his support for Phogat on social media platform X. Burroughs criticized the current regulations of United World Wrestling (UWW) and called for changes that could prevent such situations in the future.

"Maybe stories like this will wake up the IOC. Wrestling needs MORE than six weight classes! After three tough matches against world-class opponents, no athlete should have to spend the night preparing for a gold medal in this manner. Absolute desperation from the Indian team trying to get the last bit of weight off of Vinesh to qualify for today's final," Burroughs wrote.

Looks like wrestlers are moving down weight categories to get it easy. Its very tough to eat and train properly if that's not your usual weight segment.

Anyway, it's a closed discussion now

India in despair as Olympic wrestler disqualified from final despite cutting hair off

The prime minister of India, Narendra Modi, took to social media to express his “despair” over the highly unusual situation involving the athlete nicknamed the Lioness of India.

Phogat had been due to face Sarah Hildebrandt of the United States in Thursday evening’s final. The Indian had been within the designated weight before three fights on Wednesday but had to be tested again on Thursday morning in accordance with competition rules. Phogat had been running and skipping overnight in an attempt to lower her weight, but failed by only 100 grams.

Modi called Phogat a “champion among champions” and “India’s pride” in a social media message to the wrestler. He added: “Today’s setback hurts. I wish words could express the sense of despair that I am experiencing. At the same time, I know that you epitomise resilience. It has always been your nature to take challenges head on. Come back stronger! We are all rooting for you.”

Shooter Abhinav Bindra, who won India’s first individual Olympic gold in 2008, said he was “completely gutted”. “Sometimes you don’t need a gold medal to be a true champion to people,” he added.

India’s chief medical officer, Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, explained: “Wrestlers usually participate in a weight category less than their natural weight. It gives them an advantage since they are fighting with[opponents who aren’t as strong]. The process of weight cut involves a calculated restriction of food and water along with sweating from exercises and sauna till the morning weigh-in.

“Vinesh’s nutritionist had calculated this to be 1.5 kg. There sometimes is also a rebound weight gain following competition.

“Vinesh had three bouts, and hence, small amounts of water had to be given to prevent dehydration. Her post-participation weight was found to be increased. The coach initiated the normal process of weight cut that he has always employed with Vinesh and felt confident that it would be achieved.

“However, Vinesh was found to be 100 grams over her 50kg weight category, and hence, she was disqualified. All possible drastic measures, including cutting off her hair, were used. However, she was not below her allowed weight of 50kg.

“As a precautionary measure, Vinesh was administered IV fluids following disqualification to prevent dehydration. We are also getting blood tests performed at the local hospital to ensure that all is well. All of Vinesh’s parameters were normal throughout this process, and she feels perfectly well.”

Phogat had reduced Japanese journalists to tears by defeating the top seed Yui Susaki in the opening round of the competition on Wednesday. She already had a huge reputation in her own country; Phogat slept on the streets of New Delhi in protest at sexual allegations within her sport.

PT Usha, the president of the Indian Olympic Association, said: “I am shocked and disappointed at the disqualification of Vinesh.

“I met Vinesh at the Olympic Village and assured her of complete support of the Indian Olympic Association, government of India and the whole country. We are providing Vinesh all medical and emotional support. The Wrestling Federation of India has filed an appeal to reconsider the decision to disqualify Vinesh and IOA is following that up in the strongest possible manner. We are sure all Indians will stand with Vinesh and the entire Indian contingent.”

Highly unprofessional from the Indian Wrestelr. She is a professional, she should know better.

Australia hockey player Tom Craig has apologised after being released from custody in Paris following his arrest for allegedly buying cocaine

The Paris prosecutor's office said an individual was arrested on Tuesday night for buying cocaine in the ninth arrondissement.

Craig was released with a warning and did not receive a fine.

"I'd firstly like to apologise for what has occurred in the last 24 hours. I made a terrible mistake. I take full responsibility for my actions," Craig said as he left police offices.

"My actions are my own and in no way, reflect the values of my family, my team-mates, my friends, my sport, and the Australian Olympic team. I've embarrassed you all. I'm truly sorry."

Craig, 28, won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Games and has made over 100 appearances for Australia.

Before his release, the prosecutor's office said: "Police officers who witnessed a cocaine transaction at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement (of Paris), on the night of August 6th to 7th, apprehended the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia and who is said to be a member of the Australian field hockey team.

"Given the quantities of drugs seized from the seller, the investigation has been entrusted to the anti-narcotics police."

Australia's men's and women's hockey teams were both knocked out at the quarter-final stage at Paris 2024.

Mirabai Chanu finishes 4th, misses Paris Olympics 49kg Weightlifting medal

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s 49kg category at the Paris Olympics. Chanu, who had high hopes of clinching her second consecutive Olympic medal, finished in fourth place despite a commendable effort.

In the snatch round, Mirabai Chanu achieved a best lift of 88kg, positioning her in the bronze medal spot going into the clean and jerk rounds. She was closely trailing Romania’s Valentina Cambei, who led with a 93kg lift, and China’s Hou Zhihui, who lifted 89kg. Thailand’s Surodchana Khambao also lifted 88kg but was ranked higher due to her higher initial lift compared to Chanu’s.

During the clean and jerk, Chanu managed a best lift of 111kg. Despite her strong performance, it was not enough to secure a podium finish, and she ended up in fourth place overall.

Boxer Lin reaches final amid eligibility row

Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting secured a place in Saturday's Olympic women's featherweight final amid the ongoing controversy over her eligibility.

Lin and Imane Khelif are competing in Paris despite being disqualified from last year's World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) after reportedly failing gender eligibility tests.

After Khelif secured her place in the welterweight final on Tuesday, 28-year-old Lin reached her own gold-medal match with another comprehensive, unanimous decision victory as she overcame Esra Yildiz Kahraman.

As she left the ring, the 27-year-old from Turkey made the same 'X' sign with two fingers as Lin's previous opponent, Svetlana Staneva.

Kahraman first held the ropes open for Lin, then returned to the centre of the ring and made the symbol with two of her fingers, turning around to present it to all areas of the crowd.

Staneva's 'X' was reportedly said to have symbolised female XX chromosomes.

Kahraman did not speak to BBC Sport after the fight. One of her team said "no comment" when asked by the media about the meaning of the gesture.

Lin will meet 20-year-old Pole Julia Atena Szeremeta, who beat Tokyo silver medallist Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines, in the biggest bout of her career on Saturday.

"I feel very excited and one step closer to my final goal," Lin told BBC Sport.

Couple of wrestlers, hockey and javelin are left for India to look.

We are ending up with less than Tokyo medal count.

Sen, 50m and 25m skeet and pistol team events, weight lifting, boxing, archery are the events where we missed out with 4th place finishes or 1 win away from medals. That's 7 medals!!

I did not count vinesh' case , she deserved a shared silver but alas!

Upsets/ missed out medals include

three position shooting; chirag-satwik; archery men's individual; Nikhat Zareen and Antim Panghal that's 5 medals. 4th place finishes and upsets include 12 medals which we were deserving in terms of skill/ ranking but lost out due to nerves/ big stage fear.

According to Sports authority of India, 8 sports have been identified as priority and will receive high funding for all upcoming world championships -

Archery
Athletics
Hockey
Badminton
Boxing
Shooting
Weight lifting
Wrestling

This is a good list, hope they can include judo, table tennis, rowing and fencing; where there is talent available and needs better coaching and world tours.

Wrestler Antim Panghal And Her Entourage To Be Deported From Paris, Accreditation Cancelled

Wrestler Antim Panghal and her entourage will be deported from Paris after her sister Nisha used the Indian wrestler's accreditation to enter the Olympic Games Village during the Paris Olympics 2024 but was detained by the police. The police questioned Nisha but she was released after some time. The authorities have decided to deport Antim's entire entourage and her accreditation was also canceled following the incident. Antim had earlier slumped to a humiliating 0-10 defeat to Turkey's Yetgil Zeynep in the women's 53 kg category.

"The Indian Olympic Association has decided to fly wrestler Antim and her support staff back after a disciplinary breach was brought to IOA's notice by the French authorities," the IOA said in a statement.

After losing her bout, she went to the hotel, where her designated coach Bhagat Singh and actual coach Vikas, who is also her coach, were put up, PTI reported.

Antim asked her sister to go to the Games Village and collect her belongings. While her sister managed to enter the Village, she was caught by the security officer while leaving.

She was taken to a local police station to record her statement and the 19-year-old junior world champion Antim was also called by the police to record her statement.

If that was not enough, Antim's personal support staff -- Vikas and Bhagat -- have allegedly travelled in an inebriated state in a cab and refused to pay the fare after which the driver called the cops.

"We are fighting fire as of now," said an IOA source.

"We have a bad situation at hand, our security officer is dealing with the situation. They might be deported, let's see," the official source added.

The 19-year-old debutant's hope of remaining in contention for a bronze medal via repechage were also dashed after Zeynep lost to Annika Wendle of Germany in the quarterfinals. Earlier, World Championships bronze medallist Antim, who was one of the first to gain an Olympic quota in the category earlier owned by Vinesh Phogat, was outclassed in 101 seconds in the first round.

Greek pole vaulter Polak suspended for doping

Greek pole vaulter Eleni-Klaoudia Polak has been provisionally suspended from the Paris Olympics after failing a doping test, the International Olympic Committee has said.

Polak, 27, competed in the qualification round on Monday, clearing 4.20m, but failed to get over 4.40m and subsequently did not reach Wednesday's final.

Greece's anti-doping agency informed the Greek Olympic Committee (HOC) of the violation on Monday.

The HOC said on Tuesday that a member of its team had been expelled from the athletes' village but did not confirm an identity.

Polak, who also featured at Tokyo 2020, denies any wrongdoing.

"A few days ago something was found in my sample," Polak said on Monday.

"I have never taken supplements or protein. It was below the level of what is banned so that is why I competed. I have an issue with iron and have to eat red meat daily and that must have been in the meat. I only know that the meat contained that substance."

Iraqi judoka Sajjad Sehen, Afghan judoka Mohammad Samim Faizad and African Games boxing champion Cynthia Ogunsemilore of Nigeria have also tested positive for banned substances in Paris.

Marathon swimming goes ahead after Seine concerns

The women's marathon swimming event at Paris 2024 has gone ahead as planned despite ongoing concerns over water quality in the River Seine.

Familiarisation sessions had been cancelled five times because of pollution in the river, but Wednesday's test went ahead before the 10km race on Thursday.

"After the daily situation meeting this morning, it has been decided that the women's 10km marathon swimming race will take place today," a statement from organisers said.

It provides respite for Paris 2024 organisers after issues with events taking place in the Seine have dogged these Olympics.

The men's triathlon had to be postponed by a day because of low water quality.

And the marathon swimming familiarisation had previously been cancelled after tests showed levels of bacteria in the water had dropped below the required standard.

Heavy rainfall has increased the levels of bacteria in the Seine, although hot weather helps to reduce the count.

Following the women's 10km marathon swimming race, the men's event is set to take place on Friday.

If the Seine is deemed unsuitable on the day of marathon swimming, organisers said the 10km races can be moved to Vaires-sur-Marne, east of Paris, where the rowing and canoeing competitions take place.
