Bermuda's Flora Duffy claimed a historic first gold medal for her nation after taking control of the race - which started in wet and wild conditions - with a dominant run.

The 33-year-old, who rejected the chance to represent Britain as a teenager, finished one minute and 15 seconds ahead of Taylor-Brown.

"It is an incredible, special moment. I crossed the line today but I did it for everyone in Bermuda," said Duffy.

Zaferes, 32, won bronze as she finished more than a minute ahead of the rest of the field.

The day began with Saurabh Chaudhary and Manu Bhaker looking to earn India a medal in the mixed-team event. The pair topped the Stage 1 Qualification but only finished 7th in the Stage 2, to bow out of the competition without a medal.

In Men's Hockey, India put in a solid performance to beat Spain 3-0 in the Pool A game. In the match before, Indians were humiliated by Australia 7-1. The result takes India to 2nd spot in their group, behind Australia. In Men's Doubles badminton, India's campaign came to an end even before the pair came out to play their final group game.

Achanta Sharath Kamal took on reigning champion Ma Long in the Men's Singles Table Tennis but lost 4-1 before India's mixed-team in 10m Air Rifle event failed to qualify for the final. Boxer Lovlina Borgohain brought smiles back on fans' faces with a 3-2 win over Germany's Nadine Apetz in the welterweight category to reach quarter-finals.
 
Because of the wind issue, India's sailing event featuring Varun and Ganapathy has been delayed.

United States gymnast Simone Biles has pulled out of the women's team final at Tokyo 2020.

Biles, 24, left the arena after scoring 13.766 on the vault in the first rotation - her lowest score on that apparatus in her Olympics career.

All three Russians who vaulted scored higher, as did her USA team-mates.

Biles is the most successful US gymnast of all time and winner of four gold medals and a bronze at Rio 2016.

There were no obvious signs of injury following Biles' vault, in which she failed to stick her landing, but she returned from the treatment room appearing to flex her ankle, reports BBC Sport's John Watson in Tokyo.

She has reached all five individual finals and is next due compete on Thursday, when she will attempt to become the first woman to retain the Olympic all-around title since 1968.

Four-time Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles said "I have to focus on my mental health" after pulling out of the women's gymnastics team final.

The American left the arena after the vault, but later returned to support her team-mates as they claimed silver behind the Russian Olympic Committee.

Biles, 24, scored 13.766 - her lowest Olympic vault score - before withdrawing from the event.

"After the performance I did, I just didn't want to go on," she said.

"I have to focus on my mental health. I just think mental health is more prevalent in sports right now.

"We have to protect our minds and our bodies and not just go out and do what the world wants us to do.

"I don't trust myself as much anymore. Maybe it's getting older. There were a couple of days when everybody tweets you and you feel the weight of the world.

"We're not just athletes. We're people at the end of the day and sometimes you just have to step back.

"I didn't want to go out and do something stupid and get hurt. ​I feel like a lot of athletes speaking up has really helped.

"It's so big, it's the Olympic Games. At the end of the day we don't want to be carried out of there on a stretcher."

Look at China and compare it to India. We have won just 1 medal and they have already won 21 medals. We keep comparing ourselves to Pakistan. Our real competitor is China because of same size population but people don't want to talk about them because we are nowhere near them. :inti

Tokyo Olympics: Ariarne Titmus claims second gold in women's 200m freestyle

Australia's Ariarne Titmus won her latest battle with American Katie Ledecky as she set a Games record in the women's 200m freestyle in Tokyo.

Titmus, who beat Ledecky in the 400m freestyle final on Monday, touched home in one minute 53.50 seconds.

Defending champion Ledecky finished fifth but claimed her sixth Olympic gold medal an hour later.

She cruised to a dominant victory in the 1500m freestyle, her favoured event.

Ledecky led from the start, finishing in 15:37.34 before congratulating her team-mate Erica Sullivan, who took silver.

Titmus beats Ledecky in women's 400m freestyle
The 200m is Ledecky's weakest format but she arrived at the Games seeking to defend the four titles she captured in Rio in 2016.

It is the first time she finished outside the top-two positions in her Olympic career.

She and Titmus could meet again in the 800m freestyle, with heats taking place on Thursday.

Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong won silver, with Canadian Penny Oleksiak taking bronze.

Great Britain's men secured another gold in the Olympic pool with a dominant victory in the 4x200m freestyle relay in Tokyo.

The quartet of 200m champion Tom Dean, silver medallist Duncan Scott, James Guy and Matthew Richards came within 0.03secs of the world record in a stunning performance.
 
Great Britain women's hockey team continued the defence of their Olympic title with a convincing 4-1 victory against India in pool A.

Hannah Martin opened the scoring in the first minute and doubled her tally with a backhand shot in the second quarter.

Sharmila Devi pulled a goal back for India but Lily Owsley netted from close range to restore Britain's cushion.

In the closing stages Grace Balsdon stepped up to convert a penalty stroke into the top left corner.
 
Japan's tennis hopes with Kei Nishikori

After Naomi Osaka's exit, host Japan's eyes will be on Kei Nishikori. He is playing Ilya Ivashka of Belarus currently in the third round and struggled before winning the first set 7-6. But the Japanese has found his form in the second, leading 3-0.

American gymnast and four-time Olympic gold medallist Simone Biles has withdrawn from Thursday's individual all-around final in Tokyo.

Biles, the most successful US gymnast of all time, said she had to focus on her mental health after pulling out of the women's team final on Tuesday.

The head of the US Olympic team and fellow athletes praised Biles' decision to prioritise her mental wellbeing.

The 24-year-old has reached all five individual finals in Tokyo.

She was due to defend her all-around title on Thursday, before competing in the finals of the vault and uneven bars on Sunday, 1 August, floor on Monday, 2 August and beam on Tuesday, 3 August.

USA gymnastics said: "Simone will continue to be evaluated daily to determine whether or not to participate in next week's individual event finals.

"We wholeheartedly support Simone's decision and applaud her bravery in prioritising her wellbeing. Her courage shows, yet again, why she is a role model for so many."
 
Tokyo Olympics: USA easily beat Iran to bounce back from opening-game defeat

The USA's men's basketball team bounced back from their shock opening-game defeat with a comfortable 120-66 victory over Iran.

The Americans saw their 25-game Olympic winning streak ended by France on Sunday, but never looked in danger of suffering another loss here.

Damian Lillard top-scored with 21 points, while Devin Booker added 16 points and five rebounds.

In total the team sunk 19 three-pointers, with six players ending the match in double figures.

The Americans, who have won gold at the past three Games, can secure their place in the knockout stages with a win against the Czech Republic in their final Group A game on Saturday.

In Group B, Germany also recovered from an opening-game defeat, beating Nigeria 99-92.

Johannes Voigtmann top-scored with 19 points for Germany, who were beaten by Italy in their opener on Sunday.

Japan staged a thrilling final-inning comeback to beat the Dominican Republic 4-3 in their Olympic baseball opener at the Fukushima Azuma Stadium.

The hosts are ranked world number one in baseball and have high hopes of a gold medal on the sport's return to the Games for the first time since 2008.

However, they were 2-1 down against the team ranked six places lower than them after the seventh inning, with Gustavo Nunez extending the Dominican Republic's lead at the top of the ninth.

Boxer Pooja Rani got the better of Ichrak Chaib of Algeria to storm into the quarterfinals of the women's middleweight category. Pooja is now a win away from securing a medal.

Archer Deepika Kumari started her individual event in style, registering two quick wins to progress into the 1/8 Eliminations round.

The sixth day of the Tokyo Olympics began on a bad note for India as the women's hockey team suffered its third straight defeat, losing to defending champions Great Britain 1-4.

However, PV Sindhu continued her winning run to enter the Round of 16.

Archer Pravin Jadhav bowed out of the individual event after losing to World No. 1 Brady Allison in 1/16 Eliminations round.

Debutant boxer Pooja Rani enters quarterfinals
Indian boxer Pooja Rani (75kg) out-punched Algeria's Ichrak Chaib in her opening bout to enter the quarterfinals of her maiden Olympic Games on Wednesday. The 30-year-old Indian clinched it 5-0, thoroughly dominating a rival 10 years her junior. The two-time Asian champion was in command with her right straights and also benefitted immensely from Chaib's lack of balance in the ring.

Badminton Update | Men's Singles Group D - B Sai Praneeth loses 14-21, 14-21 to Mark Caljouw of Netherlands. With the second consecutive defeat in the group stage, Praneeth's campaign is over.
 
Andy Murray's hopes of a fourth Olympic medal are over after he and partner Joe Salisbury lost 6-4 6-7 (2/7) 10-7 to Marin Cilic and Ivan Dodig in the men's doubles quarter-finals in Tokyo.
 
Daniil Medvedev struggled to breathe in the Tokyo heat on Wednesday, asking the umpire who would be responsible if he died during his Olympic tennis match.

While he was able to finish his match, that was not the case for Spain's Paula Badosa, who left hers in a wheelchair.

Heat and humidity have been a big talking point among tennis players at the Games, with Medvedev among those to question the scheduling last week.

"I can finish the match but I can die," Russian Medvedev told the umpire.

The 25-year-old world number two took a medical timeout on court and also had the trainer on during a 6-2 3-6 6-2 win over Italy's Fabio Fognini that put him into the quarter-finals.

Chair umpire Carlos Ramos asked Medvedev if he was all right, with the second seed replying: "I'm fine. If I die, will the ITF [governing body the International Tennis Federation] take responsibility?"
 
Defending champions Brazil eased through to the quarter-finals of the men's Olympic football, but 2016 silver medallists Germany are eliminated.

Everton striker Richarlison scored two late goals as Brazil beat Saudi Arabia 3-1 to finish top of Group D, with Ivory Coast second after holding Germany to a 1-1 draw.

In Group B, South Korea beat Honduras 6-0 to qualify as group winners.

New Zealand drew 0-0 with Romania to finish second on goal difference.

Brazil looked set to be held to a frustrating draw when a header from Saudi Arabia defender Abdulelah Al-Amri cancelled out Matheus Cunha's early opener at the Saitama Stadium.

However Richarlison, who hit a hat-trick in Brazil's opening group game against Germany, edged them ahead again with 14 minutes remaining before sealing the win in stoppage-time.

Germany needed to beat Ivory Coast to make it through, but fell behind midway through the second half when Benjamin Henrichs put the ball into his own net while attempting a tackle in the six-yard box.
 
A representative of the International Olympic Committee said Tuesday that it is “monitoring” reports that two judokas forfeited their matches rather than face an Israeli opponent, and vowed to “take all necessary measures” against the athletes.

Sudan’s Mohamed Abdalrasool failed to appear at his slated competition against Israeli judoka Tohar Butbul in the men’s 73-kg division on Monday, without providing a reason. On Saturday, Algerian judoka Fethi Nourine pulled out of the contest to avoid facing Butbul, citing his support for the Palestinian cause.

“Obviously the IOC is always concerned in these cases and is monitoring it very closely,” International Olympic Committee director of solidarity James Macleod told a media briefing in Tokyo on Tuesday. “Clearly if there are flagrant abuses of the Olympic charter, the IOC will take all necessary measures in that respect.”

Macleod noted that Nourine and his coach, Amar Benikhlef, had their Olympic accreditation withdrawn on Saturday and were sent home.

“In the case of the Algerian athlete and coach, the national Olympic committee took immediate action, very prompt action, to remove the athlete and the coach from the team and send them home,” he said.

Nourine told an Algerian TV station last week that his political support for the Palestinian cause made it impossible for him to compete against an Israeli.

“We worked a lot to reach the Olympics… but the Palestinian cause is bigger than all of this,” he said, adding that his decision was final.

The International Judo Federation’s (IJF) executive committee temporarily suspended Nourine and Benikhlef. In response, the Algerian Olympic Committee withdrew their accreditation, and further sanctions are expected.

AThe IJF said Nourine’s stance was “in total opposition to the philosophy of the International Judo Federation,” adding that the IJF “has a strict non-discrimination policy, promoting solidarity as a key principle, reinforced by the values of judo.”

Asked by reporters about the behavior of the Algerian and Sudanese athletes — as well as a similar pattern in the past from Iranian and Egyptian competitors — Macleod said the IOC takes every incident seriously.

“The IOC is looking at every case that’s brought to us,” he said on Tuesday. “We will investigate anything that is raised to us, even from third parties. We will work with the national Olympic committees concerned, the international federations, etc., to respond to those on a case-by-case basis.”

The IOC official added that the Olympic organization “has been very clear that non-discrimination, autonomy — all of these principles that are in the Olympic charter — are things we will not flinch from and we will adopt a strict position on all of those.”

At the 2016 Games, Egyptian judoka Islam El Shahaby quit the sport, just hours after refusing to shake the hand of his victorious Israeli rival Or Sasson in the first round of the men’s over-100kg competition at the Rio Olympics.

Iranian judokas have also come under fire for refusing to compete against their Israeli counterparts.

In April, the International Judo Federation issued a four-year ban against the Iranian Judo Federation over Tehran’s demands that its athletes refuse to face Israeli opponents.

The ban was backdated to begin in September 2019, when judoka Saeid Mollaei left the Iranian team during the World Championship in Tokyo, revealing he was ordered to lose matches and withdraw from competitions to avoid facing Israelis.

Tokyo Olympics 2020, Day 6 Live Updates: India’s Satish Kumar has made a sparkling debut at Olympics after beating Ricardo Brown in men’s +91 kg category. He has qualified for the quarterfinals.

PV Sindhu booked her spot in the badminton women’s singles quarterfinals with a win over Denmark’s Mia Blichfeldt. The Rio Olympics silver medallist won the contest 21-15, 21-13 in just 40 minutes. After goalless first two quarters, India broke the deadlock against defending champions Argentina in the 43rd minute through Varun Kumar before Vivek Sagar Prasad (58th) and Harmanpreet Singh (59th) struck in the closing minutes of the match to seal the contest. With this win, they have confirmed their quarterfinals spot as well.

Earlier, Indian rowers, Arvind Singh and Arun Lal Jat finished 5th in their Men’s Double Sculls Final B which means they finish overall in the 11th place.

Indian golfer Anirban Lahiri’s Tokyo Olympics journey also started today, the Indian is moved up to T8. -2 after Hole 7.

Indian shooters Manu Bhaker and Rahi Sarnobat is also in action in the Women’s 25m pistol event. Rahi finished 7th in her relay in the precision round, the rapid round is yet to begin.

Tokyo: Pakistan’s judoka Shah Hussain Shah was knocked out of 2020 Tokyo Olympics on Thursday by Egyptian Ramadan Darwish in the -100kg event.

Shah Hussain, son of legendary boxer Hussain Shah, could only survive three minutes and nine seconds before Darwish performed an ippon on Hussain to win round-of-32 match.

What is an ippon?

A full throw in which a contestant throws his opponent to the mat with “considerable force and speed” so the opponent lands “largely on his back.” An ippon is enough to win a match in one move.

Earlier, badminton player Mahoor Shahzad, swimmer Haseeb Tariq didn’t showcase satisfactory performance while weightlifter Talha Talib bagged fifth position in 67 kg competition.
 
American Caeleb Dressel set an Olympic record on his way to winning the men's 100m freestyle gold medal as he seeks to become one of the most successful swimmers at an individual Games.

Dressel won in a time of 47.02 seconds to claim his second gold in Tokyo.

China took gold in a thrilling women's 4x200m freestyle in a world-record time of seven minutes 40.33 seconds.
 
The sports director of the German Cycling Union has been sent home from the Tokyo Olympics after making racist comments during Wednesday's men's road time trial.

Patrick Moster was caught making the remarks on German TV.

Moster reacted as Germany's Nikias Arndt chased Algeria's Azzedine Lagab and Eritrea's Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier.

In a statement, the German Olympic team said Moster "will no longer carry out his duties" in Tokyo.

Moster had apologised after the race on Wednesday and the German team said it was "convinced" his apology was "sincere".

However, it ruled he had "violated the Olympic values", adding: "Fair play, respect and tolerance are non-negotiable."
 
India scored twice in the last two minutes to beat Rio Olympics gold medallist Argentina 3-1 in a Group A preliminary league match at the Tokyo Olympics on Thursday. This win has assured India a place in the quarterfinals with the final Group match against Japan to go.

Boxer Mary Kom Eliminated, Loses By Split Decision In Round Of 16
Indian boxer Mary Kom was eliminated after losing to Ingrit Valencia via split decision in women's Fly (48-51kg) Round of 16.

India's badminton star PV Sindhu defeated Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark 2-0 in the Round of 16 and booked a place in the quarterfinals of women's singles event.

while in boxing, India's Satish Kumar won his bout against Ricardo Brown of Jamaica 4:1 in the Round of 16 of men's Super Heavy (+91kg) category to seal a quarterfinal berth.

In shooting, India's Manu Bhaker was in 5th place while Rahi Sarnobat came 25th after women's 25m Pistol (Precision) qualification round. The women's 25m Pistol (Rapid) qualification round will take place tomorrow with top 8 shooters qualifying in Precision and Rapid final combined.

In rowing, India's pair of Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh finished 5th in the Lightweight Double sculls Final B and 11th overall with a time of 6:29.66.

In sailing, India's Vishnu Saravanan finished 23rd in Race 8 of men's One Person Dinghy Laser Radial while Nethra Kumanan finished 20th in Race 8 in women's One Person Dinghy Laser Radial. Sailors Varun Thakkar and KC Ganapathy finished 7th in Race 6 in Men's 49er.

India's golfers Anirban Lahiri and Udayan Mane began their campaign at Tokyo 2020 Men's Individual Stroke Play.

In tennis, world number one Novak Djokovic won in straight sets 6-2 6-0 against Japan's Kei Nishikori in the men's singles quarterfinals.

The age restrictions apply to all countries, this isn't even Japan's A team either. This result blows out all the racial/ethnic superiority talk, the only difference is skill - a second/third tier Japanese team can annihilte a 3rd or 4th tier France team purely because they were more skilled and maybe better managed.

I don't believe in the ethnic/racial superiority theories in football. People who believe in that as a reason as to why asian teams are not as good as the European ones don't really understand football as a game.

US gymnast Simone Biles says she is still struggling with the 'twisties', raising doubts over her participation in her remaining Olympic finals.

The 24-year-old withdrew from the team and all-around finals in Tokyo, saying she was prioritising her mental health.

"I seriously cannot comprehend how to twist," she said during a social media Q&A session on Friday.

She is due to compete in all four individual apparatus finals, starting on Sunday.
