The Indian team have done a sterling job so far. One medal so far and with a bit of luck they should at least double that tally by the end of the Olympics.

I think 3 medals is a good prediction from here.

1 already in the bag, Lovlina guaranteed the second, and either Sindhu or the hockey team to potentially fetch a 3rd.

That's really really bad.
India should at least win 20 medals with size the country is.

We are the worst country when you count medals per capita.

However, considering we find it hard to rub 2 medals together, 3 in this Olympics is a good haul (if it happens).

(An exception was 2012 where we won 4).

India should invest heavily in swimming. There is a lot of medals to be won.

I think it has to do with culture. India does not have a sport culture.

I think when the overall standard of living in India get's to a level where people does not have to fear how to get food on the table people will then take sport seriously. Now it's just about education, jobs and career.

PV Sindhu To Take On He Bing Jiao In Bronze Medal Match

Badminton bronze medal match, PV Sindhu vs He Bing Jiao Live Updates: PV Sindhu is in with a chance to become the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals

PV Sindhu will be looking to put the heartbreaking semi-final loss to Tai Tzu Ying behind her as she gears up to take on China's He Bing Jiao in the women's singles bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics on Sunday. Sindhu was up against the world number one Tai Tzu of Chinese Taipei in the semi-final match which she lost 18-21, 12-21 on Saturday. The ace Indian shuttler is in with a chance to become the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic medals. The only Indian to win two individual medals at the Olympics is wrestler Sushil Kumar. He won the bronze medal in 2008 Games in Beijing and went one step better in London Games to win the silver medal, becoming country's only individual two-time Olympic medallist.

PV Sindhu has lost nine out of her 15 matches against China's He Bing Jiao and the Indian shuttler will be looking to better that record with a win today.

Alexander Zverev followed up his upset of Novak Djokovic by becoming the first German man to win a singles gold medal in Olympic tennis with victory over Karen Khachanov.
Having ensured his countrywoman Steffi Graf remains the only tennis player to win the Golden Slam of all four major titles and Olympic gold in one year, having done so in 1988, Zverev has now joined her as a singles champion.

Zverev has been one of the pack of players trying - and so far failing - to break the dominance of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer at the grand slams, but here he has been a cut above and he eased to a 6-3 6-1 victory over Khachanov, representing the Russian Olympic Committee.

PV Sindhu very close to getting her bronze now. just 5 points away

So wonderful to see how delighted Sindhu's coach was post her final winner.

What a performance. Totally bossed every game she played except the one where she ran into a legend in red hot form :( .

Anyway so happy. Another medal from an Indian girl

Will be great if our hockey team wins a medal too.

Despite keeping ball 56% time in their possession, Britain is trailing 0-2!

TBH, Pakistan is the even worse ATM. 5th most populated country and hasn't won a single medal since 1992.

I believe Bangladesh is the worst overall. It is the most populous country in the world never to have won an Olympic medal.

Oh no zharnell Hughes from great Britain has been disqualified. He was very good in the semi final

Jacobs from Italy has done it.He is Olympic champion. It's his personal best.9.80.

Hardik scores 3rd goal. At least, one Hardik is any good.

Through to the semifinals. Massive achievement by the boys. Well done, what a day

Team India qualified into semi-final after 49 long years in Hockey at the Olympics.

Indian men hockey team have made their way to the SEMI-FINAL for the first time in 49 years after defeating GBR by 3-1 in the quarter-final match!

It's all over for Great Britain's men. They are beaten by India and exit the Olympics at the quarter-final stage.

India go through to the semi-finals where they will face Belgium.

Men's high jump

Gianmarco Tamberi suffered a leg injury just before the Rio 2016 Olympics which ruled him out of the Games.

He kept the cast, writing 'Road to Tokyo 2020' (and then 2021 when the Olympics were postponed) on it, and he had it with him as he won Olympic gold today.

Venezuela's Yulimar Rojas has been speaking after her record-breaking gold meda.

“I am lost for words, I can’t describe this feeling and this moment. Gold medal winner, with an Olympic record, and a world record...wow. It is a fantastic night," she said.

“I was looking for it, I knew we had that distance in my legs to get it today. I was failing a bit in the technical aspect, but the last jump was one to give everything, and it was like that.

"I focused on giving my best, enjoying, and it came out. It makes me happy. I have to enjoy it now, and live the experience.”

An incredible Olympic high jump final ended with both Qatar's Mutaz Barshim and Italy's Gianmarco Tamberi taking gold medals.

After an exhausting two-hour competition, the pair couldn't be split having recorded best clearances of 2.37 metres.

The athletes were offered an opportunity to take part in a jump-off.

But in a moment of radiant sportsmanship, they agreed to share the title, sparking huge celebrations.

It is the first joint Olympic podium in athletics since 1912.

Maksim Nedasekau of Belarus took bronze, having also jumped at 2.37m, but having more failed attempts across the competition.

The pair embraced before running to celebrate with their coaches and team-mates, hoisting their nation's flags above their heads.

Barshim can add the gold medal to his back to back World titles, and is the winner of Qatar's second ever Olympic gold medal, after weightlifter Fares Elbakh won the first on Saturday in the men's 96kg event.

We will win at least 2 medals in wrestling, hoping for 3. This sport hasn't let us down since 2008, we have a few gold medal favorites as well. If we can win in field hockey or athletics (discus, javelin), it will be special.

Shooting has let us down massively. This was our strongest and largest ever contingent and they drew blank when it mattered. Chokers. How can you finish first in qualification, create an Olympic Record and then do so badly in the final? I never expected anything from our archers because they are paper number ones, lack clutch genes. But shooting, seriously? Destroyed any hope of double digit medal tally. Men's boxing was another choke job. Why are Indian sportspersons so mentally weak? Even our cricketers do well in bilaterals, group games and then get embarrassed in semis and finals.

I think when the overall standard of living in India get's to a level where people does not have to fear how to get food on the table people will then take sport seriously. Now it's just about education, jobs and career.

Main problem for us is that we are decent in a wide variety of sports but not dominant in anything.

We do better than Commonwealth countries in sports like badminton, TT, shooting, archery, weightlifting, wrestling etc. But Asians are even better than us in these sports: China, Japan, South Korea, Iran, Central Asian states. So we don't enjoy much success in Olympics.

We win medals in athletics, tennis, rowing in Asian Games but obviously stand no chance against Western teams in Olympics.

That is the main problem for us. Gone are the days when we struggled to send athletes for Olympics. Now 100+ athletes earn their qualification fair and square. But we don't know how to go to the next step. No big improvement since London. I think we will stagnate at around 12-15 medals by 2028. Tough to match even Japan and South Korea. China's competition is USA.

A Belarusian Olympic athlete has been taken to the airport in Tokyo to fly home after publicly complaining about the national team.

Krystsina Tsimanouskaya was due to compete in the women's 200m event on Monday.

But after posting a video complaining about being entered into another race at short notice, she says she was told to pack and taken to the airport.

She has now called on the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to intervene.

"They are trying to get me out of the country without my permission," she said in a video posted on the Telegram channel of the Belarusian Sport Solidarity Foundation (BSSF), a group that supports athletes jailed or sidelined for their political views.

"I am asking the IOC to get involved."

In a short statement the IOC said it had seen media reports about the sprinter and had asked Belarus's National Olympic Committee for clarification.

According to Belarus journalist Tadeusz Giczan, the flight has taken off without the sprinter on board. She is now with police at Tokyo's Haneda airport.

Earlier Ms Tsimanouskaya told radio station European Radio for Belarus (ERB) she was afraid to return to her country.

She had previously alleged in a video posted online that she was entered into this Thursday's 400m relay event at short notice by Belarusian officials, after some team mates were found to be ineligible to compete.

State media criticised her after she posted the video, with ONT television channel saying that she lacked "team spirit".

On Sunday she says that her coaches came to her room and told her to pack and to fly home. She was reportedly booked onto Turkish Airlines flight 199 from Tokyo's Haneda airport to Istanbul.

The sprinter told Reuters she was removed from her team because she "spoke on my Instagram about the negligence of our coaches".

The Belarus Olympic Team however said later that she was taken off the team because of her "emotional and psychological condition", and would not compete in either the 200m race or the 400m relay event.

The BSSF was set up in August 2020 to support athletes during protests against President Alexander Lukashenko, re-elected last year in a disputed presidential vote.

Government forces brutally cracked down after hundreds of thousands protested about the election. Some of those who took part were also national-level athletes, who were stripped of funding, cut from national teams and detained for demonstrating.

For the first time in 109 years, an Olympic gold medal was shared in athletics after high jumpers Mutaz Essa Barshim of Qatar and Gianmarco Tamberi of Italy chose to both become champions.

The pair were both flawless through the final on Sunday night, passing every level from 2.19 metres all the way up to 2.37 metres without a single fault.

That made them equal-first on countback, with the only other man who cleared 2.37m - Belarus’ Maksim Nedaeskau - having faulted at 2.19m and 2.35m before passing.

With the Olympic record of 2.39m the next level, Barshim and Tamberi instead spoke with officials about whether they even needed to enter a jump-off to decide gold.

“Do we have to go?” the Qatari jumper was heard asking.

The pair then shook hands and celebrated as joint gold medallists.

In a sense half a gold was fitting for Tamberi, who became famous in high jumping for shaving half of his face and donning a ‘half-beard’ at major events.

It was the first time since Stockholm 1912 that a gold medal was shared in athletics - it happened in both the pentathlon and decathlon that Games.

Social media erupted with positivity about the decision from the pair, though others asked if it was really sportsmanship or just smart, since neither lost anything.

Australia’s Brandon Starc finished a brilliant fifth, clearing 2.35 metres, which would’ve won him gold at every Games since 2000.

Sindhu must definitely be India's best ever individual female athlete? Always raises her game for the big events - the antithesis of our cricket team.

Think she might even be close to being India's best ever individual athlete outright but I guess Abhinav Bindra shades it with his Olympic gold and multiple gold medals in the commonwealth games.

After that for sure she's up there with PT Usha, Maleshwari, Tabbu etc

Pakistan can win a shooting medal tomorrow.

Who can?
One of our shooter finished 6th today! Did he even qualify for the finals?
even if he did he is way off even bronze.
I don't think so, I will ever see Pakistan win an Olympic medal in my life time.
I know people love olympic and everything but I do believe that Olympic have a clear biasness toward western sports. Why has Squash never been in olympics? its just beyond me? If it were there we would have easily won at least 4-5 Gold back then. Cricket too should be in olympcs (in t20 format), Cricket has more than enough competitive teams now.
We can easily have 4 pools of 4 teams each.

Group 1:
Pakistan
New Zealand
Netherlands
Nepal

Group 2:
Australia
Sri Lanka
Barbados
Republic of Ireland

Group 3:
India
Great Britain
Bangladesh
Jamaica

Group 4:
Afghanistan
South Africa
Trindad
Zimbabwe

Also Games like Kabaadi have a place in olympics too.
Why our nothing games like Softball, Netballm Rock climbing there?

Incredible.

That is a bizarre rule. Why would they given an option to share a olympics gold medal. Naturally both took that option instead of competing

Pakistani shooter Ghulam Bashir lost a place to qualify for finals after stage 2. He was in 6th position after stage 1 and looked good for qualification. Last 2 rounds were very bad which made him loose a top 6 spot.

Unbelievable scenes here. Indian women pull off the greatest upset ever in women's hockey history at the Olympics as they knockout heavy favourites Australia in the quarterfinal to advance to their first ever semifinal at the Olympics. Absolutely nail biting moments in the last two quarters as the Indian goalkeeper had the best game of the team. Indian women now enter Hockey semis. This is unbelievable

What a pleasant surprise. One of the great upsets in this Olympic. Never expected them to reach Semis after their dismal perfomance in group stage. Congratulations Team IND.

Its like the Men's results have pushed them on. Both teams have made us proud

The hockeyroos must feel gutted. Imagine winning all five group games while conceding just one goal and getting knocked out of the tournament by heavy underdogs the Indian women who had lost their first three group games. They probably took the Indian team lightly given their own blistering form and the patchy form of the Indian team in the tournament.

What a game it was. Unbelievable really. Reminds me a bit of Gabba 2021. This is just phenomenal stuffs.

Indian Hockey, both teams together, is at its best since 1960s. For the first time ever, both teams are in semis. Some consolation after multiple heartbreaks in shooting and archery. Hopefully India will get more than 4 medals in total this time.

Mega Update:

Women's 200 meters, Pakistan's Najma Parveen ranked 7th (last position) in her heat. :jk

India's Dutee Chand was also 7th (last) in her heat.

Tokyo Olympics 2021 Day 10 Live Updates: India beat Australia 1-0, reach historic hockey women’s semifinals

The Indian women hockey team made history on Monday, the 10th day of Tokyo Olympics as they beat Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinals. With that, India sealed their spot in the semifinals for the first time in their Olympic history. Meanwhile, starting the day for India, Dutee Chand clocked her season best timing of 23.85 seconds in the women’s 200 m race but finished last in the heat, failing to qualify for semifinal.

After a carnage-filled Day 9 that saw PV Sindhu added to India’s medal tally with a bronze, India will now pin hopes on Kamalpreet Kaur as she will be throwing the 1kg disc in hope of a medal. Indian shooters have had a disappointing campaign in the Games so far. Sanjeev Rajput and Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar will be looking to change that in 50m Rifle 3 positions qualifiers which will be followed by finals if the duo qualify.
